One Piece Volume 98 coming in Feb 4th 2021 !
Volume 98 Predictions/Discussion
-
-
Remember the process video of the last volume cover? Oda drew a version with the Scabbards in the foreground and Luffy, Law & Kid in boxes in the background.
My bet is that we will get this cover this time, with the exception of Law & Kid being replaced by Momonosuke & Yamato. This is the volume where we really have the Scabbards facing off with Kaido, Momonsuke's declaration and, well, most of Yamato as of yet.
As title, I'd wager either "Remnants" or "The Dream of Wano".
-
Wow, exactly five months from Vol. 97. Here's hoping we actually get those Jinbe SBS details this time.
-
Is this the longest lapse between two volumes?
-
Funny how that 2 weeks break delayed the volume by 5 weeks.

Pretty much agree with the cover but concerning the title i would bet on "The Brocade of Loyal Retainers".

Five months between volumes, but somehow it feels so much longer. I still think it's only going to be 10 chapters and the big delay is just because of the two weeks off. Those kinds of delays tend to cascade. You finish the book two weeks later, but you can't print it two weeks later because your printer is scheduled to be making something else then, so you have to wait another week until they have an opening. Carry that on to distribution and a release date that doesn't clash with other things you want to release (mostly I think at this point would be nothing but Kimetsu wanting to go up against a new One Piece release) and you can easily see your two weeks off magnified exponentially.
I scribbled up my prediction for the cover a little bit after chapter 994 came out. Again, I'm not the best artist, but I think the design concept stands.
!
Unless Oda decides to do the villains cover for this one, but I'd hate to see the Scabbards robbed of having their biggest moment represented.
-
i'll humbly present "New Onigashima Project" and "I don't feel like losing" for cool volume names, but i do agree that probably "the brocade of royal retainers" will take it home.
earthy or red tones. scabbards on the cover, periodth.

Pretty neat, it only lacks Momo.

It's hard to say how many chapters; 997 feels like the best end point, but Oda would never put 13 chapters in a volume. The most, I believe is 12 chapters in volumes 63 and 69.
'The Dream of Wano' seems like a fitting title. The whole raid is being framed as the hope / wish of the people of Wano celebrating the Fire Festival in the capitol. "Can you imagine the Kozuki Clan are fighting Orochi and Kaido as we speak?" The scabbards are fighting Kaido as they imagine, but likely will be ultimately defeated.
I think the cover will feature the nine scabbards. Not sure who else.
-
I think we can live without Momo on volume 98. In my mind the priorities would be the Scabbards, Kaido and Yamato in that order, and after throwing in the obligatory Luffy that's a lot of characters even for a One Piece cover. Momo's basically a macguffin being footballed around for most of the book. There'll be plenty of space for him later when he gets his big moment of standing up to Kaido or declaring himself Shogun or whatever else. He's not unimportant, but I think the characters who are actually being active participants in the story will be put first.

Kaido doesn't need to be on this cover. he will have the Villains cover next.
this should be primarily the Scabbards, yamato & luffy.

He doesn't need to be, sure, but I loved the imagery of his coiled-up dragon form overseeing the battle, rising in front of the moon, throughout the volume. I'm definitely going to remember it as one of Wano's most iconic looks, so I'd love to see it represented on the cover.
-
I also think it's gonna be the scabbards, Yamamo and Momo. Maybe even with Oden in the background to signify they're all in his shadow so to speak.
We already got dragon Kaido overseeing a volume in 92 so I don't really see it again.
-
I'm in for a frontal of Kin, Den, Ashura e Inu performing the Oden pose, with Luffy, Yamato and Momo on their back and the other scabbards on the low part.
-
These looked like leaked drafts, I get overly excited every time I come to this thread

100% this. This has to be the volumes the scabbards all appear on, otherwise they won't get one together. My idea for this was exactly the same as what you drew except maybe with human Kaidou instead of Dragon Kaidou so it mimics that scene right before they all push Kaido off the balcony.
-
Volume 98 will contain 200 pages which mean 10 chapters, from 985 (New Onigashima Project) to 994 (My Other Name is Yamato).
Might we get a chance to see the cover soon.
-
I need the cover now
-
Ten chapters is exactly as expected. I hope we do get an early cover. It'd be a nice way to make up for how late the book ended up being.
-
The digital version of Volume 98 is scheduled for March 4, 2021 in Japan.
-
Not mad at it. I think i've seen fanart with those colors for Yamato
-
Here is the rough cover!
https://images2.imgbox.com/17/36/KsGUzXKg_o.jpg
And here the process video for Eiichiro Oda
Luffy, Yamato, all the Scabbards and dragon form Kaido. I'm gonna call that a win, predictions-wise. You can even see Oda considering the bit with Luffy and Yamato running side by side through the castle for their poses in the early stage of it.

That shouldn't be surprising, he was already on a Jump cover not so long back, so the colours aren't a new reveal.

Didn't know that. Thanks
-
I love that cover, might be my favorite volume cover from Wano
-
Lol, just in the process alone, Oda drew Luffy and Yamato together more times than Luffy and Carrot together in the entire arc
-
Yamato looking good, Kawamatsu looking dope but different and Izo looking gangster.
Really like this one. -
Here the different versions until final one.
!
!
We can't join Volume 92 cover with Volume 98, so I think maybe Volume 98 will can join with Volume 99 cover (or even with Volume 100) in a double/triple illustration (and we will see Kaidou head in any of the future covers lol).
-
Kawamatsu does look weird there. It's because he has a regular nose and not a beak. Also not a fan of Kiku's bright yellow armour lol
The rest looks hype though, pretty much what I expected to see.

I really like the original one conceptually, with Kaido's body snaking past twice, breaking up the scene. The poses are definitely better in the final version though.
I'd love to see another connected set of covers, but the only other pair done like that were one image broken in two. I'm not convinced the Kaido body was intended to do more than just give him a presence, not without Oda at least sketching out the layout/pose it's meant to connect to at the same time as this one. (which he could have done out of shot, but still)
This is a solid cover overall. Oda's done a great job getting the composition right with so many characters overlapping in so many places, pulling such dynamic poses. It could easily have ended up more like #96, where he fit a lot in but most of them were just kinda standing there, looking like they could be individual pieces of promo art just photoshopped together instead of one big illustration. Hope we get the final colours for this one sooner rather than later.

Kawamatsu's strange nose is due his beck is cut by the hand
-
Kawamatsu looks like he got the handsome Squidward treatment.
-
Did Oda forgot Luffy's cape here? Nice cover though

Perfectly balanced :ninja:.
Great cover. I love how prominent Kin'emon is in the cover which is fitting considering he is the heart of the Akazaya Nine. I may not have been a fan of Kin'emon initially but the Wano Kuni arc has made me a big fan of his.
Also love how Yamato's colours pop in the cover. From the red horns, to the white hair changing to lime green to turquoise, to the purple incorporated into their outfit.
-
Kawamatsu's strange nose is due his beck is cut by the hand
Ah you are right. Maybe it won't look as weird in the final version.
-

Impressive of Oda to still throw in some wack coloring in there when we already now most the character's color schems.
This is more or less what I expected. Too bad Momo and Shinobu couldn't get in.
-
Seems We will get the final ver of the cover on Monday (Jan 18th), and Big Announcement !
-
Not mad at it. I think i've seen fanart with those colors for Yamato
Oda revealed Yamato's official colors on a Jump cover back in October Possibly because he realized he wouldn't be on a cover until now, possibly because he's just that important. Not unprecedented, he did a cover with Luffy, Roger and Oden earlier in the year, and I'm sure he's done others that aren't just Luffy.
-
I notice Kin'emon is emulating Oden's pose, even rolling up his sleeves.

I know Robby is gonna come up with something but I struggle to remember when we ever had a cover where Luffy was standing side by side with a character who wasn't a Strawhat or going to be one. Look at Yamato, she's on equal shoulders with Luffy, she's so prominent and Oda went through several drafts, each time making sure that Yamato and Luffy were posed together equally.
-
Actually, it is pretty rare for the Strahwats to be portrayed side by side with Luffy (although not unprecedented), since they're not really meant to be his equals, but to stand behind him. It's more likely for the likes of Law and Kidd to get that treatment.
-
The closest ally to having a picture like that is Law in 2013 issues 4-5, but Law is a bit less prevalent in that issue next to Luffy than Yamato is in the above one. Otherwise, no non-strawhat ally has been placed next to Luffy on such equal footing. Plenty of villains have, though.

Zoro has been placed equal to Luffy a couple of times, the latest being 2018 Issue 47. Looking through them all, Zoro is by far his most regular cover partner.
edit: Or Chopper, but I'm not going through to count again.

For volume covers, that's not really that rare. There was Kid and Hyogoro recently, although they're not really portrayed as the focus of either cover (like, say, Luffy/Zoro in Volume 3 and Luffy/Jinbe in Volume 66)
The WSJ cover is a bigger deal though, since it's extremely rare for a non-SH to be featured.

If it's literally side-by-side, then we have Zoro, Chopper, Robin (young), Usopp (same cover as young Robin) and Jinbe.
There's also Luffy and Sanji in the Germa-themed cover, but that doesn't really count since the focus is on the Vinsmokes.

It's relatively rare for Straw Hats in general. Jinbe still hasn't been on a single one.
