Chapter 988: Sorry for the Wait
-
-
Sanji was great this chapter but Franky was the highlight… Lol so cool
-
Oh man the Sanji snark is even better in the official translation.
And consider yourself sliced is just a peak Brook line.
Wonder what queen will do now that he has nothing to guard? I'm hoping he runs into Kidd and Killer personally. He needs to be on the receiving end of some payback
-
Chapter 987 drops
OP Community: Debates the merits of the lead supporting characters wielding the Haki used by their dead idol to achieve their arc-long plan of wounding their mortal enemy Kaido
Oda: Hey so next chapter let's have Franky pop a sick wheelie on Big Mom's face lmao
-
Did…did Nami just call Franky "Big bro?"
-
Aniki!
Yeah, great chapter. Can't wait to see Sanji's fight with King continue.
-
Hmm weird that Franky didnt mention the flowers in this translation, considering its a call back to Punk Hazard…
-
Great chapter. The ending with Franky and Brook saving Nami from Big Mom was an amazing moment. I like that Nami called Franky, Big Bro which she normally wouldn't do.
-
I live for that final page
Nami calling Franky aniki:wub:
Oh, and Sanji was cool as fuck -
:wassat: There's definitely some good action going on, but it falls surprisingly flat on me. Maybe because we're hitting again that point as in WCI where everything is just 2-3 panels of ppl doing flashy stuff instead of properly lad choregraphy ? I'm going to blame all the breaks. If there was more panel time, we might be allowed to actually see stuff instead of jumping around all the time.
-
Is it that far up to the roof/top of the skull? In one panel you do see Jack and the gang enter from the roof top door.
I sure hope Jimbei gets to fight Jack. I just want them to have some Fishman Island & Karate Dojo history. Them two beating the heck out of each other and remembering old times would be great for both characters I’d think.
Sounds impossible considering Jinbe is 18 years his senior. (Jack is 28)
-

Maybe he knew Arlong.
Or maybe Arlong is also way old.
-
Not sure I like the official translation of the final line. I don't think I really get what its referencing? Is it Nami crying? I think the flower line is much better.
-
The chapter and thread title makes it sound like the OP is apologizing about a delay in getting the thread posted.
-
It's disappointing to not see Dog's and Cat's Sulong forms with the way the last chapter ended. We can barely even see how the other minks look. And of course we cut away from the scene just when it's about to really start.
-
Yeah sadly stephen either didnt catch the callback from the flower line Franky used back then, or he just decided against hit, i dont know… Overall the translation felt weird a lot of times. But that doesnt mean that there werent lines that were significantly better in the official. The one-liner of Sanji towards momo was epic in the official
-
New review!
Best chapter of Onigashima yet! Loved the Marineford parallel of saving Ace.
Luffy: Shinobu
Ace: Momo
Mr. 3: SANji -

Wait, Franky's line was a callback to something he said in an earlier arc? Can somebody fill me in, I didn't get the reference either.
-
What was his flower line in PH?
-

Yeah this was the perfect moment for them to go sulong, can't understand why Oda skipped it
Also he spent his double pages wrong. Minks were more deserving of a double spread while transforming.
-
Can Zeus just die/disappear already?
-
Maybe he knew Arlong.
Or maybe Arlong is also way old.
Jack is actually younger than Hody Jones.
-
Man, it really feels like something is missing when a chapter has only 15 pages… but it was pretty good.
I just wonder where this strife against Big Mom is going. I hope she retaliates.
-
So the next chapter will simultaneously be out on September 6 and the 30th of August.
-
Can Luffy do something instead of just commenting ?
987 - "We're here to not just kick Kaido but Big Mom and Orochi too. And all you motherfuckers supporting them!
988 - oh my God, Shinobu! Oh my God, Sanji! Oh my God, Big Mom! Oh my God end of the chapter! -
Can Zeus just die/disappear already?
I just hope his breakup with Nami is for real and Brook just doesn't give him to her again.
-
Ah, see, the official translation really pissed me off this time around, so much so I feel obligated to vent about it a bit.
I am all for a smoother, less literal translation, but multiple times this chapter I could see that the official outright changed the meaning of the original rather than translating it.
First off, can someone confirm the "Moon-Lion" element of Kaido's speech? It doesn't match anything else I've seen. If it's in the Japanese, cool, doesn't make much sense since Carrot wasn't very Lion like in Sulong, but sure, that's on Oda. But again, doesn't match anything else so I'm suspicious.
Secondly, Sulong's "Life Span" is short? See this is just confusing, it was clearer in the unofficial where they called it a time limit. That's what it is, it's a time limit, nothing to do with "Life Span".
King and Queen's banter, I could tell it got warped and changed into Queen being "considerate enough to leave" rather than simply being incompetent, because all the other scans had it as incompetence…
Lastly, and this is really where I lost it, there was no reference to a runny nose in the japanese, it was a jab at Big Mum not being "a flower". And the line the official translation uses just loses so much of the impact of that scene. It's not even addressed at Big Mom, just seems to be a comment on Nami crying? Why? The flower line was such an awesome line as well...
All that, and the one time a change was required, on the name of the number, it was just translated to romaji "Nanbi" instead of making it a pun on 7, thus completely losing the connotation that he's the seventh number.
I know we're really not meant to complain, it's free, it's online, it's good. But really, the current state of translations of One Piece is awful. Scanlations have been clamped down on so much that the quality is unreasonable... yet the official just straight up changes the japanese to the point that things are unrecognisable! What, should I wait for the anime to get a proper translation that actually confers the same meaning? This kinda heavy handed editing in the translation style makes me miss JaiminisBox & Mangastream. I will stand guilty as charged for that opinion.

!
Franky's line was my favorite bit about the chapter, so I hope we get an update on the translation of that last bit. I think Stephen mistook 花 (flower) for 鼻 (nose) - both read as hana in japanese - and the entire thing ended up making no sense.First off, can someone confirm the "Moon-Lion" element of Kaido's speech? Sulong is written with the kanji for "Moon Lion" and the reading is "Sulong". You can't really convey that in English unless you state both separately in the line.
As for "life span", I don't see the problem. You can use that expression to mean how long something lasts.

It's the literal translation of 月の獅子, the alternative term of スーロン (Sūron).
Oda frequently gives alternative readings for moves, forms and other concepts (for example, Crocodile's "Sables" can be read both as "砂嵐" (sandstorm) or "サーブルス" (transliteration of the Spanish word "sables")). I believe it's due to many Japanese children not being used to more than one language yet.
-
Yea the Franky line being changed completely bummed me out a little bit ngl

Ah, that's good to know. First I've seen that be used in any translation until now, so I'm surprised to only learn about it now.
-
I think the "runny nose" line was directed towards Big Mom, because they "ran over her nose"… but, yes, the "flower" translation was better.
-
This kinda heavy handed editing in the translation style makes me miss JaiminisBox & Mangastream. I will stand guilty as charged for that opinion.
All i remember from mangastream was the shocking amount of profanity that was being added to add "flavour" to the text. Compared to that few other translators can manage to stand out as taking more liberties with the source material
-
King and Queen's banter, I could tell it got warped and changed into Queen being "considerate enough to leave" rather than simply being incompetent, because all the other scans had it as incompetence…
The scans had King actually praise Jack for thinking ahead, which seemed completely out of character.
In the official version the focus is on Queen leaving because King doesn't want him to stick around (no matter the situation), and less about being competent in general.

988 - oh my God, Shinobu! Oh my God, Sanji! Oh my God, Big Mom! Oh my God end of the chapter!Usually Oda traps Luffy in something when he doesnt want to use him, like when he was inside the snake in Skypea or when he was stuck between the two palaces in Water 7,or when he was running towards Moria in Thriller Bark. This time Oda didnt really knew what to invent for him. But thats good,i like him being there even if he just comments. Better than some filler stuff.

Well the trap this time is Big Mom. He wants to fight Kaido first, but he can't risk bringing another Yonko up there.

Oh yes the profanities. I think that was my main gripe with them too, although having moved from anime to manga the fact there were profanities made sense, there's a lot of "swearing" (in a very japanese not so offensive way) in the anime. The overall flow of the chapters Mangastream put out was alright. Now jaiminis on the other hand… that was a bit of a tragedy. I understand why it was done, but I do miss their translations, ngl...
--Edit--
If I can just add to the nitpicks with the translation... Big Mom's line to Luffy "You're the one who ruins the fun for others" felt far more in character than "You've destroyed everything I look forward to" - not to mention I'm fairly sure this isn't gramatically correct. You can't look forward to something that's been destroyed already, it should be "You destroyed everything I looked forward to" or "You've destroyed everything I've looked forward to".
Also, Sanji's line to Momo... very american slang. "Way to drop your name like a man" doesn't really work for non-american audiences, and is certainly a very contemporary-based expression. The scans' "You declaring your name was amazing" isn't the height of wordsmithing... in fact it's kinda bad english... but by comparison the overall meaning is a bit clearer I think...
-
This chapter is yet another that gives me vibes of Yamato not being entirely sincere about his motivations. Not long ago, he felt nervous about the offer to remove his cuffs, now he was hesitant about helping Momonosuke, then saying that line "he's my son" gave me the impression that it was a line to reassure himself, as if this Oden facade is something Yamato doesn't really believe but keep saying to get courage or something.
-
Is this another doflamingo vs sanji or will sanji get his first, proper 1vs1 battle since Absalom/jabra? Like what, 12 years ago?
-

The kanji for Sulong does in fact mean moon lion
Secondly, Sulong's "Life Span" is short? See this is just confusing, it was clearer in the unofficial where they called it a time limit. That's what it is, it's a time limit, nothing to do with "Life Span".
It's very much connected to the lives of the minks though. Sulong doesn't naturally end until the mink dies of exhaustion.
All that, and the one time a change was required, on the name of the number, it was just translated to romaji "Nanbi" instead of making it a pun on 7, thus completely losing the connotation that he's the seventh number.
Would you actually be ok with it if it was a pun on 7? To be clear, Nangi's name consists of the kanji for "seven" and "oni". I honestly don't think any name, even one like "Sevogre", would 100% get the point across. IMO, it's often better to retain the original pronunciation of a name especially when it wouldn't feel like a name if translated.

@uniaka:

Sanji will get his 1 vs 1 vs 1 of the Flying 6. Him and Page One have unfinished business…
-

You sure he is not going to end up fighting some gifter? Oh wait, zoro is doing that.
-
Sanji will get his 1 vs 1 vs 1 of the Flying 6. Him and Page One have unfinished business…
Why would Sanji fight the runt of the Flying Six whom he trounced earlier in the arc?
-
@Kaido:
Why would Sanji fight the runt of the Flying Six whom he trounced earlier in the arc?
He said he would diminish their numbers, but didn't.
Ooh… I figured it out. Sanji is going to fight a Number instead.
-
@uniaka:

Neither. Other characters are bound to get involved and the narrative will change.

Trying not to say everything I already said in the spoiler thread but oh well here I go:
-
Franky driving straight throug to Big Mom's head is going to be iconic. It's going to be talked about as one of Oda's best moments. I love it. It shows perfectly One Piece's sense of humor.
-
Kaido vs Minks continues to look cool. What a perfect visual setting etc.
-
I'm finally starting to warm up to Yamato. She's a total fucking nutcase. I loved how she just thinks Momo as her son.
All in all a good chapter.
-
-
I'll chime in with a few things my wife and I noticed when she helped me translate:
Secondly, Sulong's "Life Span" is short? See this is just confusing, it was clearer in the unofficial where they called it a time limit. That's what it is, it's a time limit, nothing to do with "Life Span".
I was curious about this as well when we were translating, but the literal word they used translated to "life span". A mink in Sulong will expend their energy and possibly die if they stay that way too long, so I can only guess that's the implication here.
King and Queen's banter, I could tell it got warped and changed into Queen being "considerate enough to leave" rather than simply being incompetent, because all the other scans had it as incompetence…
The literal translation was, "He read the air," which is kind of this Japanese way of saying he understood what was needed. We went with "He was paying attention," but it could work as "He was considerate," too.
Why? The flower line was such an awesome line as well…
In this case, yeah, we're pretty sure it was just a mistake. The kanji of "hana" used here is 100% for flower, not nose.

I agree on Yamato, hilarious this chapter
-
-
So, it seems that Yamato really thinks he is Kozuki Oden, not just his successor, or what have you, and as a coping mechanism for enduring growing up with a terrible father like Kaido.
Which means at the end of the arc, they have to find their own identity, and I estimate reclaim her true self, and will return to be thought of as a woman.
-
Yamato actually made want to see the Oden thing dropped even more, this chapter.
