Chapter 956: BIG NEWS
-
Damn! Just finished reading. That was a chapter! So many questions and I can't wait until next week!
My two predictions: Definitely that Sabo is the dad and also that he was framed for killing Vivi.

ONE PIECE CHAPTER 956 REVIEW: https://dawnofonepiece.com/chapter-956-review/
-
I find it amusing that Wapol is actively snitching on the reverie.
And i still can't stop guessing at the nature of Vegapunks warlord replacement. I really can't fit Vegapunks personality and a WMD style weapon so i'm still more inclined to think it is something that is closer to the frontlines, but either way i hope we get to see it next chapter
-
Vegapunk has made RGM-79 GM units:
-
Wow…. just wow... A lot of things have went down in this chapter. I didn't expect Drake still being a member of the Marines. I'm interesting to see where the Vivi and Sabo situation is going. I really like the final moments of the chapter showing Buggy, Hancock, Mihawk, and Weevil getting ready to fight the Marines at all their current locations. I did got a laugh about Wapol giving out all the information about what happend at the Reverie to Morgans, since I figure that would be something that Wapol would do.
-
Much more enjoyable translation, good job. Especially the exchange between Garp and Neptune.
Also bullpucky. I will start to use that word in my circle!
-
I happy that One Piece can still surprise me, after all this time :D. What a twist, or twists rather. Things just got very very interesting. Mihawk unleashed. Boa no longer obligated to stay in Amazon Lily. Shanks was at the reverie too if you remember. Meanwhile, the news of Big Mom and Kaido's alliance hasn't even spread yet. All this going on, meanwhile Luffy and co. soon to attack onigashima. EPIC!
-
Was hoping viz translation would make things clearer.. doesn't look like the case.
-
So timeline-wise, I'm assuming the Morgans scene was the day Reverie ended, people reacting to the news the morning after, and everything else is current time, i.e a week after.
That means that Blackbeard and the Revos could make their moves at any moment, anywhere now that the Marines have their hands full.
-

Might be an Oppenheimer

"DJ of the printed page". I like that this is the official trans. Location's too hot is better than the J Box's "place is too dangerous".
The Royals that haven't interacted with the SH crew may get addressed in the future. Especially with how Garp was explaining their conflicts

Cant make things clearer if its intended to be unclear
-
Bet the one thing the Gvnt wanted to be censured was the incident of Alabasta, is the shadiest one so far and the only one unmentioned by the public in general.
Teach totally going for the Mera Mera. After losing it twice already, by not taking it from Ace's corpse and then from Doula Mongo's colisseum.
It will end up in Burguess hands, so that Jinbro can finally finish off his 5 days fight against the powers of the Mera Mera. The WG/Marines already know about the Kaido/Linlin alliance, and seems SWORD had a plan that cannot be put in play for how busy the Marines are atm, I really hope they send at least Ryokugyu to not to look super useless again.
-
Someone in the other thread pointed out that Akainu has a sword tattoo, possibly suggesting that Sword exists as a way for Akainu to recruit marines loyal to him and spy on the World Government.
Today I wondered if the reveal of Sword combined with Akainu's extremely overkill plan to beat down and capture every warlord at the same time is a hint of what's to come: a coup followed by the immediate establishment and rapid expansion of a massive fascist empire ruled by a man who wants nothing less than total global obedience to his own brand of moral orthodoxy.
Also Akainu really would look better on that throne.

If Akainu is in the same group as Drake, then why hasn't Drake given Akainu any info regarding Wano's forces?

I'm even more lost regarding what Blackbeard said.
-

.
He already did. Kizaru asked Akainu to let him go right afterwards.
Koby is the one quite off about Akainu being behind SWORD, I mean, if not for Shanks, Koby would've been turned into another donut ace.
-
Is official release permanently Friday now instead of Sunday?
-
How do we know that he hasn't?
By process of elimination I'm assuming he means Pluton.
I mean, I know there's plenty of stuff we don't know about Teach, but that would be along with assuming that; Teach knows about Pluton and Teach has no problem going all the way back to Alabasta.
-

Maybe he doesn't know.
Drake is the captain of Sword so the others probably report to him.

So my guess is the WG is framing Sabo for the Alabasta incident (Cobra's assassination?) while at the same time announcing his execution / Kumafication? That would explain the slightly different reaction of [Dadan/Makino/Koala] and [Dragon/Ivankov].
-
So my guess is the WG is framing Sabo for the Alabasta incident (Cobra's assassination?) while at the same time announcing his execution / Kumafication? That would explain the slightly different reaction of [Dadan/Makino/Koala] and [Dragon/Ivankov].
But why would they announce his Kumafication? As his 'punishment,' or to prove a point? It's possible.
It's not like he's a lynch pin in Vegapunk's new tech though. And I guess the PX's could be commonly know now, or known enough, since they were televised at the Paramount War and it's been over two years since then. Still, though, I doubt random citizens of random Islands in the Blue Seas are intimately familiar with what the PX's are, so I don't see why Sabo's Kumafication would mean anything to them, unless it was their reaction to a Revolutionary commander getting their 'just desserts.'
It could line up for Dadan/Makino reactions, but I don't see it for Koala, or in regards to why the World Government would do it in the first place. To let the Revolutionaries know that one of their commanders got fuked up? Could be. But if he got Kumafied, the Revolutionaries would have specifically commented on it, since that's why Sabo and co. were at the Reverie in the first place.
-

Makes no sense to me, at least Dragon and Koala know Sabo very well to assume news like that would be bullshit, and none would react like that.
Besides, this guy(uh) his step-brother says Sabo was at Mariejoa while according to Garp the Alabasta incident, happened right there in Alabasta. -
I mean, I know there's plenty of stuff we don't know about Teach, but that would be along with assuming that; Teach knows about Pluton and Teach has no problem going all the way back to Alabasta.
In the volume 82 and 88 SBSes Oda stated that Teach has an interest in history and archaeology, so it's possible that he knows about Pluton. It has to make an appearance in the series fairly soon anyway, and given the fact that Blackbeard is likely to be the final enemy Luffy faces, combined with the fact that he uses the Yami Yami no Mi, I fully expect the ancient weapon named after a god of death to fall into his hands somehow.
-
Are people joking or what? Pluton does not exist in Alabasta. There is a poneglyph which talks about it in Alabasta. The location was never specified.

Wot, Pluton is not the god of death tho.
Still, Teach and his crew are much more known for being DF hunters rather than Ancient Weapon seekers. And Mariejoa is way closer than Alabasta.
Getting the Mera Mera is just go and grab. Pluton I imagine would require to first locate it in the vast country of Alabasta, that really is a much complicated task. Besides if Teach knew about it, it would make no sense for him for not going to take it earlier in time.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Kai:
Are people joking or what? Pluton does not exist in Alabasta. There is a poneglyph which talks about it in Alabasta. The location was never specified.
We don't know really, all we know is Robin lied to Croco about it. That it.
-
What does "If the Navy is only going to take it" mean… What is "only taking" something?
-
Someone in the other thread pointed out that Akainu has a sword tattoo, possibly suggesting that Sword exists as a way for Akainu to recruit marines loyal to him and spy on the World Government.
I'm more partial to the idea that Sword arefor those with a personal stake in the pirate world. And Akinu was part of it because his family was pirates or something close to that and that's why he has such hate for them.
-
How do we know that he hasn't?
By process of elimination I'm assuming he means Pluton.
In 907, he tells Kizaru to hold off on going to Wano due to having no idea how strong the Wano forces are. Drake has been a part of Kaido's crew for quite some time, even achieving a high ranking position within the crew. If him and Akainu were alligned, why would Akainu have no knowledge of something as simple as that? Even Robin with her limited time in Wano was able to obtain info on their forces, so it's not like it's a time issue either. I don't believe it's something worth lying about to a fellow admiral either.
He already did. Kizaru asked Akainu to let him go right afterwards.
I'm talking about Akainu, not Kizaru. He told Kizaru to hold off on going to Wano due to a lack of info, among other reasons.
-

uhmm, come to think if Kizaru is the one behind SWORD then. he seems anxious to invade a nation non aligned with the WG and knows he needs Akainu's permission to do so.
he even pretended to kick Drake in the face:ninja:

The Government now has the tools to turn people into Terminators, and these Terminators can even keep their fruit powers. Now considering how they recently highlighted Kuma's fate as a deterrence for the rulers of the world? It would be super plausible to follow up on that front.
Kumafication as the new special punishment for top ranking revolutionaries, since banishing them to Impel Down serves no purpose when you really want to send a message to the enemies of the Government - not just criminals.Who knows, maybe that's even the replacement for the Shichibukai. First you fire the Warlords, then you capture the Warlords, and finally you turn them into obedient killing machines. The new secret weapon replacing the Warlords are… Warlords! Well, Mecha-Warlords. But it's still fresh.
Makes no sense to me, at least Dragon and Koala know Sabo very well to assume news like that would be bullshit, and none would react like that.
Besides, this guy(uh) his step-brother says Sabo was at Mariejoa while according to Garp the Alabasta incident, happened right there in Alabasta.Okay, as far as I see it the following conditions have to be met:
1. The news contain information about Sabo's well-being, nothing else would concern Dadan, Makino and Koala to this level.
2. Sabo did something outrageous, but no matter how bad of an act it was, it's not totally unbelievable.
3. The news was regarding the Kingdom of Alabasta, doesn't mean the incident had to happen there.
Now, a possible story:
-
The Revolutionaries clashed with the Admirals Green Bull and Purple Tiger - and lost. Sabo is captured, soon to be executed / Kumafied.
-
The attack on Marie Gois happened right after Neptune and Shirahoshi left. As noted, the Marines took care of the incident, but King Cobra died in the crossfire (this is being blamed on Sabo, despite it being an assassination by the Government). Ivankov and Dragon can't believe that Sabo would be careless enough to endanger civilians, but on the other hand who knows how it played out? Clashing with two Admirals means clashing with two Admirals.
Whatever the case, this story would be terrible news for the Revolutionaries regardless of what really happened, as they rely on turning Kingdoms to their side.
-
-
Blackbeard is reacting to the news like everyone else, so unless Morgans printed the freaking location of an ancient weapon on the front page of his newspaper, he can't possibly be talking about Pluton.
-
Okay, as far as I see it the following conditions have to be met:
1. The news contain information about Sabo's well-being, nothing else would concern Dadan, Makino and Koala to this level.
I quite don't get this part as what may refer to Sabo's well-being.
however Dadan, Makino and Koala are not concerned, but crying out loud more especifically.2. Sabo did something outrageous, but no matter how bad of an act it was, it's not totally unbelievable.
yeah, dying.
3. The news was regarding the Kingdom of Alabasta, doesn't mean the incident had to happen there.
The way Garp words it, 'The Alabasta incident', already points out more clearly to the nation of Alabasta, with zero indication that it could have happened in Mariejois, otherwise, it could´ve been worded as the 'Nefertari Family' incident or similar. as far as we know, whatever happened in Alabasta could have been something purposely done while the crown family wasn´t home, after all that was said just one week after the Levely and Alabasta is quite far away.

I don't know, too much diving into possibilities, I suppose we'll get clarification by Morley and Bonney who were present there.
or even greater confirmation by Burguess showing up with the Mera Mera powers:ninja:also, according to Morgans, we have a death and an assassination attempt(attempt implies failure). but still two different incidents apparently.

The thing I find the most confusing in the chapter really is: if the Marines were short on people to do everything they had to do in that moment, how the hell they actually felt like letting Garp, of all people, just leisurely stay at Mary Geoise to act as a fancy escort to the Ryugu Family, of all people² (their island is literally just below Mary Geoise. It's not like they even needed to cross seas, they just needed to dive on a straight line down)?
You would think when the Marines have to deal with 4 Shichibukai at once plus whatever else is going on, Garp would definitely be a precious force much better fit to deal with any of those than, well… Koby! I mean, if it turns they didn't sent at least one admiral to deal with Weevil, I don't know what they were thinking.

Maybe they're doing something more important in Alabasta or something

Maybe they're doing something more important in Alabasta or something
That's where the timestamp confuses me. Whatever happened in/regarding Alabasta seem to have taken place days after the Shichibukai incident since the report just came after Garp left to FI (and it doesn't take long to get there), so none of the Admirals should be busy with that at least - although they apparently had other things to worry judging by what Koby said and assuming he wasn't meaning just dealing with all the Shichibukai at the same time.
The 1 week gap between the end of the Reverie and Garp arriving at FI also doesn't help because it seems like Garp spent one week idle up there when supposedly the Marines were demanding every force they had to deal with their current affairs.
Of course, we also have the RA commanders to take into consideration, and the whole going back and forward in time confuses me again. When exactly does most events in this chapter take place compared to the day Teach mentioned the RA fighting the Admirals?

That was on the fourth day of Reverie so it should be completely unrelated to the stuff in this chapter.
Also Stelly only realized now that Sabo was in Marie Jois so it was probably not in front of everyone.

Possible, but as was noted in the spoiler thread, one would think that the Revos have vivre cards stored for each member, thus they would know that Sabo is dead or alive, no need to confirm anything.
The way Garp words it, 'The Alabasta incident', already points out more clearly to the nation of Alabasta, with zero indication that it could have happened in Mariejois, otherwise, it could´ve been worded as the 'Nefertari Family' incident or similar.
Garps exact words are "The incident is regarding the Kingdom of Alabasta".
If something would happen to Angela Merkel then that's an incident that would regard the Federal Republic of Germany, no matter where it happened.
Maybe it's as you say and something did happen in Alabasta, but it's not clear as far as I can tell.@.access:

Well, Garp is technically not an active Marine anymore? Like he was okay with a somewhat representative position, but that's it? More babysitting royals, less beating up Yonkou.
But yeah, it's certainly weird. I feel especially bad for Mihawk's squad, because he's going to kill them all. Same with Weevil, I guess.

Thank you, so that also rules out the Marines having to deal with the RA commanders as well at the same time as with the Shichibukai (the RA matter was settled a few days before the Shichibukai fights while the Alabasta "thing" only happened a few days after).
-
Yup. It's going just like I thought. For context, read a couple of threads I've done in the past. Also, here are some posts from way back:
Oda just revealed Fifth Gear.
I don't know why we didn't see it coming before. Fifth Gear is going to be Luffy willingly utilizing fire (a la Ace/Sanji/Doflamingo/Katakuri).- Second Gear - Fourth Gear gave Luffy a smoke shroud.
- After the timeskip, Luffy can produce fire via Red Hawk.
- Fourth Gear - Snakeman gives Luffy a smoke AND fire shroud (as evidenced by the cover of Vol 89).
It's likely unlocked through passion or the power of your heart (as Oda mentioned in an SBS when a reader asked why Sanji could light himself ablaze). This means that Sanji was the first Straw Hat to unlock it (when he had to protect the people he cared about most–Nami and Robin) and Luffy unlocked it after he failed to protect Ace. Other characters have also used this in the series. Doflamingo uses Overheat and Katakuri uses Burning Mochi.
Well done, Oda.
EDIT: The Fire Festival is the perfect place for this to be unveiled. Combined with Ace’s history on Wano (how does he tie to the card theme—was he affiliated with Kaido at one point?) I’m sure we’re in for an amazing arc.
TRIPLE THREATS
“Blackbeard” Marshall D. Teach:
Paramecia - Quake Quake Fruit
Logia - Dark Dark Fruit
Zoan - Dog Dog Fruit: Ancient Model; Cerberus“Red Haired / 赤神” (née “Straw Hat”) Monkey D. Luffy:
Paramecia - Gum Gum Fruit
Logia - Flame Flame Fruit
Zoan - Cat Cat Fruit: Model LionObvious implications above indicate where I think the story will go.
I think fans are right on the money when they say that Luffy and Shanks will reunite over a Davy Back Fight.
This will likely happen after Wano. But what will happen when Luffy gives the hat back to Shanks? He can no longer lead the “Straw Hat Pirates.”
Let’s talk chapter 929. Luffy is drawn with red hair. This is foreshadowing for Gear 5: Fire Luffy. But maybe it goes even deeper than that. Perhaps Luffy will rebrand as the Red Haired Pirates following his role model’s death.
Combined with his ability to wield fire, the fact that Gear 4 resembles a Japanese deity, and “Red Haired” is a homophone with “Red God” (赤髪 vs 赤神), perhaps Luffy’s new epithet would be “Red God.” “Entei” works, too.
Let's go back to Law's flashback in the Dressrosa arc. Minion, the Isle of Fate.Law is someone who clearly wants to make major change in the world, having personally been subjected to tragedy at the hands of the law. Corazon saved his life, a Marine working undercover as a pirate.
X Drake has followed the same path as his father, Diez Barrels. A former Marine turned pirate. Young Dre was frequently abused by his father and escaped the first chance he got (since he was spared from the confines of Doflamingo's Birdcage on Minion).
This flashback ends with Law walking away, sobbing, as Tsuru attacks the island while Doflamingo rushes to evade the Marines.
So think about it. How did the two independently escape from "Minion, the Isle of Fate" (ch. 765)?
They didn't. They've been friends since childhood. They're a part of the same crew. The Drake Pirates and the Heart Pirates are fronts for one big organization. Their plan was to conquer the Grand Line through orchestrating a bunch of independent agents.Law was the frontal assault. He would ally with an unwitting pawn who owed him a favor (Luffy) and the two would take down Kaido together. Law had no obligation to help Luffy and it definitely was not done because he's a good samaritan.
X Drake was the rear guard. He infiltrated Kaido's crew by joining without putting up much of a fight. Kaido's reputation of acquiring strong pawns proceeds him and Drake knew he could easily join.
Sabo is dead. Ace is dead. Doc Q has Moria's fruit. Luffy will take their zombies down. Fight fire with fire.
Kid will settle his score with Apoo this arc, a continuation from Sabaody. It's been a long time coming. He will assist in taking down Kaido but not be victorious.
Law and Drake have always been allies. They were both from the North Blue and escaped together following Corazon's death. It makes sense; Corazon, a Marine, is Law's Shanks. Why would he then choose be a pirate instead of a double agent like his mentor? They've been marines this whole time.

Possibly sword is a special marine unit under one of the admirals, Sengoku was 14 years ago an admiral while Rosinante was spying on Doffy while they also used codnames same as Koby and Drake.
-
Aegis/Shield a corrupt unit for the Celestial Dragons.
Sword, secret Marine unit consisting of possibly all the good Marines, like Koby, Drake, Aokiji, Garp, Sengoku etc. who by the end will be the ones running the new Marines after Ims defeat.

And why is or possible was Akainu a part of the SWORD ?
A pcture of a coverpage where Kizaru and Akainu were both in a Wano-Kuni stylish environment and on Akainu's right arm there is a little SWORD tattoo.
Could be a coincidence, but who knows that tattoo seems out of the place, unless it has exactly something to do with "SWORD".
Depends if this tatto means more either than Akainu is/[was] a part of the SWORD or that he is leading it, which makes sense as Fleet Admiral.

Only you think Sabo is dead, lol.
I'm like 99% sure. If he's not dead yet, he'll die soon. Luffy never surpassed his brothers as a child and he's always wanted to. Remember when Ace and Sabo declared their dreams after the brothers shared sake cups? Luffy's dream is offpaneled but can be inferred: he wants to do both Ace and Sabo's dreams.
Moreover, Blackbeard has always wanted Ace to join his crew and now has in his possession the only DF that will allow him to do so…Moria's. He's spent all of part 2 hunting down the Whitebeard Pirates and he's got to take down Marco last. You know he'll revive Ace as a zombie to join his crew. Blackbeard is also aware that Sabo has the Flame Flame Fruit (taken from Burgess) and will be coming for it. He'll need extra firepower.
Luffy is currently in the middle of mastering his Haki and that, by extension, will result in him being able to shoot flames like Ace did (Red Hawk was the first time we saw this). Other characters already know this technique (Sanji, Kin'emon Doflamingo, Katakuri) and the Fire Festival is the perfect place for him to do it. Luffy always said he wanted his punches to be as strong as pistols. He has the power of armament, now he's learning how to wield the firepower. He's going to be the living embodiment of a pistol.
The series has been building towards a confrontation between Blackbeard and Luffy, but first Luffy will have to surpass his brothers to take down his ultimate enemies.
And let me ask you… if you don't think that Sabo is dead, then what is the story building to? What's the narrative purpose of all of these events? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
-
Was expecting Im to target Shirahoshi, but I guess that the implication that something major happened in Alabasta means that he's targeting Vivi instead. I doubt she's dead much like I doubt that Sabo's dead, but I'm gonna be mad if she got arrested.

The incident regarding Alabasta that was mentioned at the beggining of the chapter. Like what most people who read it are linking the points.
-
That doesn't really require Sabo to die.
Oda could allow Luffy to save his brother this time, but Oda wants Luffy to stand as a man. He’s maturing but he still is little brother to Sabo. You’re ignoring the other moves that Oda has been setting up on the chess board; there’s more angles to Luffy’s growth than Haki. Dealing with grief is one of them. He has to be strong.
”Three things cannot be stopped: inherited will, the dreams of men, and the flow of time.” - Gol D. Roger
Ace was right when he said he’d never die. Luffy will literally and figuratively carry the torch from his brothers, Shanks, and Roger to realize his destiny.
The incident regarding Alabasta that was mentioned at the beggining of the chapter. Like what most people who read it are linking the points.
The story is moving in multiple ways. There are multiple lines of plot moving and they haven’t converged yet. The Alabasta stuff has more to do with the history of their world at large. Sabo exists as a character to develop Luffy, similar to how Ace did.
While that’s important, you’re only focusing on a single aspect of the story (likely the one that intrigues you the most personally). What do you think Blackbeard meant in this chapter?“Pack yer bags!! Onto the ship!! If the Navy’s only going to take it, I might as well claim the prize!!!”
Where is he heading and what is he doing? What was he doing last time we saw him? Oda’s given us enough hints.

How do we know that he hasn't?
He already did. Kizaru asked Akainu to let him go right afterwards.
Koby is the one quite off about Akainu being behind SWORD, I mean, if not for Shanks, Koby would've been turned into another donut ace.
Chapter 907. Akainu has little to no intel about the Samurai despite having a guy spying for the Marines there.
A guy that's confirmed to have fought at least 5 Samurai mind you. And has been living there for at least a year.
It's likely SWORD is an anti-Akainu faction, or at least something to keep him in check. Drake and Koby are not people that would be loyal to Akainu, especially with their experience with corrupt, authoritarian Marines.
