Are we sure it's an actual fight?
I joked on Twitter that they're playing Catan but they seriously could just be playing cards or arm-wrestling.
Island is shaking, Big Mom has bruises and the minions said also said the island won’t last for long
-
I was really hoping for a Rox back story
-
After the arc ends, we will discover that Big Mom is pregnant.

Pretty sure these two could be doing this even playing crosswords

They're emperors. They could be playing Twister and have the same results.
Again, like with Cake Theory, reject all assumptions based on what you see.
Same thing with Ryuma v. Zoro (which I also called the Hell out of) assume that Oda is always trying to fool you.
-
Can't say the off paneling really bothers me. We'll see them in due time. Lot more bothered by other off panelings in this arc. Not just fights.
-
I think Big Mom misses:
-Skypea's race
-Kaido's race
-King's race -
They havnt seen each other for a few years, maybe theyre… you know.. doing something nsfw :ninja:

If Kaido shrugged off G4 like it was your little brother slapboxing you, but Big Mom's basic punches bruised him, poor Luffy is still so screwed on the prospect of beating him.
-
I believe that BigMom vs Kaido being off-panelled means its not that big of a deal.
Don't get me wrong whenever it's over big statements will be made, wether it's a new alliance or the renovation of revenge vows.
Two emperors meeting will send ripples across all the New World but it's not like one of them will kill/defeat the other. When Ace and Blackbeard fought Oda off-panelled the final clash but he showcased their powers and abilities he wanted to hype both characters for the far future.
Here he doesn't really get anything from it, if he started showing too much of the fight they wouldn't be as surprising when Luffy faces them in the "near" future. He hasn't even shown Kaido going dragon form or BigMom pulling homies left and right. It feels much more like a Sanji vs Zoro quarrel, which most likely fits given the shared Rox crew backstory.

I still wonder who will kill Kaido, I mean Black Beard would be the obvious choice to build him up as the new strongest creature in the world and get his third devil fruit
But that would mean BB would end up killing three Emporor's (White beard, Kaido and eventually Shanks)
But I could tots see the Rox captain killing Kaido after he refuses to become his subordinate again, to build him up as a crediable threat
Then again Akainu might unleash whatever force Vegapunk created to replace the seven warlords to build them up as a credible threat
Or knowing Oda there may be some unknown baddy we have no idea about

Luffy punches him in the liver, and decades of alcohol abuse comes back to haunt Kaido as he dies instantly.

Raftel being romanized as Laugh Tale is pretty huge.
So Elbaf could be romanized as "Air Buff"? Who knows.
Now, If Laugh Tale is the home to laughing people, you all know it could be the D.s' origin isle.
Maybe this whole D-thing is nothing else but the shape of a grinning mouth, like in ":-D". -
Doesn't Raftel already count as confirmed to be D.s origin/Capital of ancient kingdom with all the Road Poneglyphs and the talk of God's Natural Enemy? Laugh Tale would of course fit very well into the D.s scheme. Never thought of the smiley before though. It's perfect.

Indeed, of Course. But Raftel backwards would be letfar (and by adding Oda's Humor it could be "Let's Fart").
However, with Raftel being Laugh Tale and Dr. Hiluluk being Dr. Chirurg (german word for surgeon), there is a lot of Interpretation space for any Name like "Elbaf".–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Let's put this "D = Smiling mouth" one step further: Doffy (being a former CD) didn't like the D. And what was his Jolly Roger? A crossed out Smiley face! Although he produced SMILES.

Laugh Tale is inspired by Shark Tale

Regarding the offpanelling of Big Mom vs Kaidou, I think its fair to be dissapointed, though not due to the lact of kewl strength feats. But because seeing their encounter would be an opportunity to showcase their characters, contrast their goals and beliefs, have their personalities bounce off each other and so on. This doesn't have to be achieved through fighting of course, and may still happen to some degree, but seeing any sort of interaction between them would be great… because frankly, Kaidou really REALLY needs it. In terms of OP villains he's extremely unengaging, and despite us being 45 chapters in he has barely felt like a presence in his own arc. Rather than seeing it as a wish for fighting for its own sake, I think its completely fair to expect some more time spent showcasing the main villain, rather than supporting character #44.
-
Honestly i'd be amused if there was nothing more to Kaido than his wish for his life to be less dull. I mean i'm sure that they'll do that mandatory deep dive into why he drinks and tries to kill himself all the time, but the shit i was bored excuse is quite literally unique in this realm of pity the monster backstories. Even the fact that he doesn't even bother to care for his kingdom on even a superficial level is just all kinds of amusing. He reminds me of that guy from house on the haunted hill who just shouts welp were dead and heads for the bar while the others search for a way out. Like totally disconnected from the everyday goals and reasonings of normal people
-
I'd be more pleased to see a Rocks flashback than an actual fight between Mom and Kaidou. Flashbacks always better than fights.
The ultimate thing would be a fight within a flashback (Akainu vs Aokiji)!BTW I feel you, Daz.
We learnt more About Orochi's personality than About Kaidou's. -
Well it better lead into something soon otherwise the encounter would be pointless.

I'm sure we will see that exchange of goals and beliefs at one point, probably when they're tired of fighting and resort to binge-drinking and binge-eating. But the first encounter being a pure exchange of blows makes sense to me - and them throwing one-liners around while doing so would be kind of cheesy.
Kaido and BM are defined by being the most powerful entities on the planet, characters with huge egos who rule with violence & fear first and foremost. Them talking about their feelings and beliefs right off the bat wouldn't feel right. For now I consider it their way to show affection, like dogs chasing each other. Fighting is so much easier for those two than talking about the past and their feelings.
I mean I agree that we will need more of Kaido instead of sidecharacter number 44, but this wasn't the time for it.

I have never put too much thought into the transition to their reminiscing of the past, but this stop to drink and eat would be really cool, lol.

Imagine they fight for a whole week and then someone shows up saying ''Kaido-sama, the banquet for the fire festival is ready'' and Big Mom is like ''There's a banquet!? Why didn't you tell me!? What are we even doing here!?'' and Kaido just nods and says ''Yeah, let's get wasted like back in the day!'' Cue flashback.

This is exactly how I see it. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from going to those two, only once they calm down and get bored of fighting is that it will be worthy focusing on them - something we knew they wouldn't be willing to do on the first moment since Kaido had long announced he would attack Linlin on sight.
-
I still think it's too early to see all of that between Kaido and Linlin. Wano looks more like Kaido losing Wano compared to the end of Kaido. We're still learning about Wano and it's history. I doubt this is the time to flesh out Kaido and Big Mom.
-
Yea this isn't the time for it. Why would you need to focus on the villains anyway? Everyone knows you show the backstories of all your side characters first and then at the last possible moment you finally flesh out your antagonists. You need to wait 70 chapters before Kaido actually gets involved in the arc.
Jeez you fans have no patience.

I mean it's not like Oda showered us with villain backstories in the past. For the first half of the series you could summarize the goals and beliefs of the main antagonists in two sentences, if that.
And to be honest, sometimes less IS more. At least Enel and Crocodile worked better for me than Doflamingo, where Oda shoved Doffy's entire curriculum vitae down our throats.

I would say Doffly is a better or at least deeper character while Croc is a better villain.
But the thing is at this point wether they are just evil for evil sake or deeper character, Oda has usually started working on it. Enel already killed a couple of people in godly fury, Doffly already shown remorse for killing his minions, Croc already fed Mr3 to the crocodiles.

But Kaido is already way past the point of "evil for the sake of evil". The infos we have about him is at least on par with Enel or Croc back then.
Let's see:
Grand ambition: Prepare for a massive war that he will be a part of (production of biological weapons, working towards a full devil fruit army).
Treatment of his underlings: He does not consider them family, but he also doesn't rule over them like a literal god. He considers people a resource, he doesn't kill his enemies unless he has to. He breaks them instead, makes them his bitch. Like the alpha of a pack. Pretty much like Negan from The Walking Dead (I think Greg(?) even noted that Oda watched the series).
That alone is enough to work as a One Piece villlain on a basic level. Of course we are bound to get more, he will at least recieve as many flashback panels as Big Mom, but that flashback has to be on point, not now when we're still sorting out the issues of the locals.
Which seems to be the real problem here: the story of the locals (and Wano in general) is not engaging for a lot of readers. These characters don't seem to work, so people cry for Kaido & Big Mom paneltime to save the day.

I would say we have more information than interraction. We see Crocodile engage the country and interact with the locals or Baroque Works and working towards his goals. We see Hody pick people up and throw them at the palace.
With Kaido he always seems in a hurry to exit the frame and refuse to engage with the setting creating a big disconection between him and Wano. It would be pretty seasy to forget he lives there. It really feels like Wano could be something hapenning in the Scotch island rather than something that is hapenning in his domain. His crew feel present but Kaido himself doesn't.
Not that it's all bad. At this point I hated Big Mom's crew stupidity whereas I think the beast pirates are meh. They aren't impressive but they also aren't awful. Ands the plot doesn't bore me yet(although I have no engagement on the local population).
-
I don't know if it was intended or not, but Croc has way more to his story left to be told. Enel as well. Doffy's backstory has been fleshed out and his purpose (knowing that secret) outside of Dressrosa will come back into the story. We have Doffy and Bentham in ID. How that comes back into the fold will be cool
-

Speak for yourself. Who's backstory have we gotten in detail aside from Kawamastu/Onimaru's relationship (which generally has positive reception)? I haven't seen anybody speaking negatively of the Wano natives. Wanting see see Kaido's backstory doesn't suddenly mean you're uninterested in everything else. The Wano takeover story that Oda has been building up to is something people are generally interested in, I'd say. Ryuma's story (which covers Wano's distant past) is something people are excited for as well.
-

I'd be honestly shocked, if it didn't went down exactly that way.
Either 2 Options are possible:
1. BM and Kaidou really join Forces at the Festival.
2. BM "weakens" Kaidou that much that the SHs and allies have a not-so-hard time against the beast pirates.Whlie Option 2 does not Sound so good from a reader's Point of view, the aftermath of Wano would praise Luffy again in the newspapers. Just like it did after WCI.
-
Given recent developments is it safe to say Zoro will play a crucial role in the fight vs Kaido? I imagine Luffy gets the majority of the spotlight but there's been too many teases and parallels with Ryuuma etc for Zoro not to have any involvement vs Kaido ('the Dragon')
-
Well, Zoro has to inherit the sword god's title somehow.
As much as Orochi deserves a good beating, everyone on Wano seem to be afraid of Kaido's power. Seems appropriate to have Zoro tango with Kaido.
-
Zoro and kaidou don't even know eachother. Luffy, kozuki clan, moria, kidd have reasons to take on kaidou, zoro not.
-
Reason 1: Kaido is hard to cut. Zoro wants to be best cutter.
Reason 2: Look at reason 1.
-
@K.:
Reason 1: Kaido is hard to cut. Zoro wants to be best cutter.
Reason 2: Look at reason 1.
Zoro can even become WSS without cutting dragon since there is no mention of mihawk ever doing it. And there are many dragon model fruits in his crew like queen, king, page1, drake, so zoro can just cut one of those since they count as dragons.
-

Zoro wants to be the greatest sword master ever not just WSS.
-
Kaido needs his "Dark Luffy" part yet.
Most One Piece villains worth their ink had the paralel, most recently Big Mom being more hedonist than Luffy and having a goal that under different means would be noble.
While Kaido's method of recruiting seem luffy-ish, it's not enough yet for it to be a full paralel. His relationship with Orochi/Doffy/Caesar tho, a good reflection for Luffy is how he arrives at an island and changes it by befriending a local, most other would be conquerors have done it by themselves, not by proxy like Kaido.
I dunno. That's the missing piece.
-
@uniaka:
Zoro can even become WSS without cutting dragon
He could, but it would look good on his C.V.
since there is no mention of mihawk ever doing it.
There is also no mention of the contrary. Not that Zoro needs to achieve everything Mihawk has done. But if you want to keep the Mihawk comparisons. Mihawk used to duel with an emperor. wink…Duval's wink
And there are many dragon model fruits in his crew like queen, king, page1, drake, so zoro can just cut one of those since they count as dragons.
Even though they technically count as dragons, they probably do not count for the citizens of Wano, which are the ones that have to recognize Zoro as the new Sword God. Can you imagine Zoro cutting Queen and the citizens starting calling him the Sword God. In terms of narrative and parallels, Zoro should attempt to cut the best dragon to test his limits. The best dragon is Kaido, in a land where samurai have a long history (Ryuma) with dragons, if Zoro is going to show why he deserves to have Wano's national treasure, it has to be by cutting the real oppressing force putting the country down. Not the guy even his own subordinates laugh at.
Although, this does not mean that Zoro cannot tango with Orochi neither. Orochi was given several heads for a reason. He can afford to get one or two cut by Zoro to show his respect for Yasui. Then Zoro can move onto better and bigger things.
-
Sarcasm was hilarious, but it's not impatience that I see really. It's more of a lack of understanding of how things flow. Thinking that because Kaido and Linlin finally met, we're getting a flashback or exchange of ideals, doesn't go with the flow. It's usually something basic like what they're doing now after knowing that they disagree, are rivals and just stubborn in general. Look at what it took for them to get on the den den mushi call. Also, what it took for them to be in each other's presence. Now, we're gonna get their backstory and ideals? Nah, it doesn't add up.
