Hope the trip down the mountain didn't wear you out too much.

I balance out the ulcers this thread gives me by watching some MSNBC contributors say goofy shit like "oh yeah impeachment soon for sure."
Gotta remember that self-care. -

CNN's Jeffrey Toobin: 'I regret my role' in Hillary Clinton false equivalence

This is a lot of bad news, yet I question the wisdom of doing all of this before the State of the Union. Then again, there's no shortage of bad news to talk about, but at least no one on the news would bring up "constitutional crisis" before today. I'm trying to look on the bright side, but I can see these moves backfiring. For one, I would think that Trump would eventually be forced to enforce a veto-proof bill eventually. Eventually.
House GOP Appropriations chairman calls it quits
I do have some good news, though it's on a smaller scale. One more GOP is giving up before the mid-termsâNew Jersey Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen. One of the guys who voted yes on the tax bill. Sure, he's probably got a cushy retirement coming up...but at least he's gone. That's something.
I assume someone tricked him into saying his name backwards, so he was forced back to his home dimension. Or forwards, both are impossible. :ninja:
-
I don't have high hopes for the State of the Union, to be honest. I meanâŚ.do we really want to be inspired by Trump's grandstanding for an hour with awkward applauses every 2-3 minutes?

Reminder about very important TV watching for tomorrow:
-Joe Kennedy III rebuttal
-Kimmel has special guest Stormy Daniels -
Also don't watch the State of the Union. Trump loves ratings and there's no reason to give him better ones. You'll hear everything you need to from later news coverage.

It's gonna be fun to see the news stations fact-check each and every last one of Trump's boasts and anecdotes in order to tell the audience what he got right and what he didn't.
-
Wikileaks has been working with Sean Hannity. Who has of course been working with Trump.
Confirmed when a someone pretending to be Hannity contacted Julian Assange and got responses.
Whelp, Hannity is gonna be interviewed by Mueller now.

I think you have that backwards. I understood it as Assange contacting them by mistake. Also I'm not seeing this yet on what I consider more reliable outlets (Reuters or WaPo) and that story cites Daily Beast as its source. I've never seen the beast widely regarded as a reliable source so between those two things I'm not sure how strong this story actually is.

Just more organized conjecture as usual. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.

Daily Beast isn't rock-solid, but it's not crazy-left, either.

Nevertheless, it still provides a sensationalist style of reporting that leaves the reader with a sense of discontent and possible ableist views. I make it a personal policy to stick with neutral reporting no matter how tempted I am to favour one side over the other. It's just the responsible thing to do.
-
All in all regardless of how true the article is or isn't doesn't change the commonly held and sane view that Assange is an asshole who is in tight with the Russians. And has been hiding at the Ecudorian embassy for the last few years in part because of a rape accusation.

Da speech, with fact checking footnotes by NPR.
https://www.npr.org/2018/01/30/580378279/trumps-state-of-the-union-address-annotated
When you read the words that someone else wrote without hearing Trump say them, and ignore the last year of horrors, it sounds like a decent speech at least.
Kennedy is making a speech now. Much better.
â- Update From New Post Merge ---
I think Joe Kennedy just unofficially announced his bid to run for Pres in 2020.
-
He'll probably want to run for Senator first.

Obama was only a senator for like two years. Trump never was obviously. And he's a Kennedy.
He could probably skip that step if he built any support up.

Also, surprisingly the DOJ is going to leave a Democrat alone. I'm surprised, because I walk past several people who are convinced this guy is guilty of something. If Sessions doesn't want to pursue him, I assume he's either innocent, or they have other interests to focus on.

A loooooot of stories hitting today that seem like they could have been from FBI leaks. The McCabe force-out might create some additional interesting ripples over the next few days.
-
Again, probably the most impressive feat of idiocy by this administration is how they've managed to piss off an intelligence industry that ought to love them.
-
Trump's SotU had 8 million less viewers than Obama's.
You know that's gotta eat at him.
Also apparently roughly 1/3 of those that watched it, watched it on Fox News.

Again, probably the most impressive feat of idiocy by this administration is how they've managed to piss off an intelligence industry that ought to love them.
Especially with the FBI, which appears to have been on average pro-Trump before the election.
Seeming increasingly likely that the weird Comey behavior around the Clinton investigation was driven by the leaks and threat of further leaks from the anti-Hillary faction within the Bureau.
-

I was going to make a joke last night about how he was going to brush this off and go down the "alternative facts" road and say it had the best viewing numbers ever. In the end, I didn't even have to.

The army is reportedly turning a blind eye to gross human right abuses by some afghan units.
Including the practice of " enslavement and rape of young boys" by commanders.
Although aid funds should be cut off to any foreign military unit implicated in gross human rights violations, the ânotwithstanding clause,â says that Afghan military aid should be available ânotwithstanding any other provision of lawâŚ
Wish I could express surprise...

Not going to link it, because it is obvious to everyone, but Trump is claiming his SOTU has the "highest ratings in history" which is easily able to be checked and proven false.

Lawyers for Rick Gates withdraw from Russia case
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/01/lawyers-for-rick-gates-withdraw-from-russia-case-383422
Three attorneys representing Rick Gates told a federal court Thursday they are immediately withdrawing as counsel for the former Donald Trump campaign aide, who is fighting special counsel Robert Muellerâs indictment of him on money laundering and other charges.
Lawyers Shanlon Wu, Walter Mack and Annemarie McAvoy said in atwo-page motionthat they would explain the reasons for their abrupt move in documents filed under seal with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
âThe document speaks for itself,â McAvoy told POLITICO, declining further comment.
Gates and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort both pleaded not guilty to Muellerâs charges filed in October, the first to be publicly announced in relation to the investigation into whether the Republican presidential campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.
-
Gates hired another lawyer last week that reportedly specializes in plea deals. That lawyer is still on the job.
-
As the GOP attempts a full authoritarian takeover, the Democratic lead in the polls has dissipated from 10+ points to less than 6 (which isn't enough to take back the House).
-
We're nine months out from the election and a lot of that drop occurred after the shutdown which also coincided with an uptick in Trump's approval rating.
Seems likely to me that some people on the left are probably less enthusiastic about answering polls right now because they're pissed at the Democratic Party.

Bill was only in office for a few weeks then, so it was treated only as a regular speech given to Congress. Same for Bush 2's 2001 speech, Obama's 2009 speech, and Trump's 2017 verbal excrement.

It exists to give the stupid conspiracy theory ridden idiots of the Trump base a thing to jump up and down hooting and hollering over. Their official "proof" for supporting yes, going after the investigation.
You know I wonder about this approach.
What started bringing down McCarthy was when he targeted the military. I wonder if pushing this too hard is really going to blow up in the GOP's face.
Either way good job alienating the FBI, who was in your corner all and all, for at least a generation you dipshit elephants.
