The reaction faces in this chapter were great and the scream blowing up the missiles as well as destroying the mirror were great. Capone's transformation was also ccool as well as zany as hell but I dont think they'll have such an easy time leaving

Can we have a poll regarding the cannibalism talk ? Interested to see how divided the community is.
Honestly, I don't believe that Oda would do such a dark thing in this manga but I'm running out of ideas for of an alternative.
My only theory so far is that CP0 sent agents to kidnap the children because the government refused to pay Carmel.
A battle happened in which Carmel was badly injured and taken away along the other orphans. Linlin, even if she was not fully conscious because of her eating frenzy, was just too strong for them and they had to leave without her.
While departing or shortly after, Carmel passed away and her devil fruit was transfered to a fruit which was close enough of Linlin to be eaten. Now, why was the giant disgusted by what he saw ? Maybe because while the children were crying and begging for her help, Linlin was just laughing and eating right next to them.
I could somehow see how such a sight was disgusting for a proud warrior race like the giants of Elbaf.I know that my theory is really weak but that's the only way I can think of to avoid such a dark turn of her past.
-
Don't forget the vinsmok family and it's army
I think BM is out of the fight but the rest of the crew will face BM officers with the help of the vinsmok -
well since people are comparing it with real life, I think Ace and Scarlet had the darkest shit happening to them in the series, one died believing his friend from his childhood was dead and never got to know the true about him, the other died without remembering who the father of her daughter was. Take it to real life, if one relative whos very important person to me, was erased from my mind and I never get to remember this person for the rest of my life… well, that shit to me, is dark as fuck, cannibalism looks like a child's game besides it.
can someone ever picture a brother, fiancee, parent, son or daughter being purposely erased from your minds and reaching the end of your life without ever remembering the existence of that person?? seriously cannibalism is not the darkest thing in OP. -

This is basically exactly how I think it went down if it wasn't cannibalism. Though, minor difference would be that Carmel may have died on the spot. But yeah, this is if it indeed turned out she didn't eat them (which, at this point, feels a bit more likely).

-
all these desperate conspiracy theories where they dont wanna accept the simple answer. she ate the kids. y'all overthinking this
Yeah, now that I think about it you're right. Oda always goes the simpler route doesn't he?
-
Which would also mean that the events Streusen called hilarious are something completely different than what is currently hinted at?
Otherwise it is a bit hard to imagine both guys seeing the same thing without it actually happening. I can get behind the fact that the giant might have jumped to conclusions, especially considering Linlin was already famous for her hunger fits, but a completely detached by-stander imagining the same, i don´t know..
I'm devil's advocating but whatever Mom did wasn't good. The giant saw and got outta Dodge but our cook friend, who's being set up as a nasty user of children, has a morbid sense of humor so I think it's reasonable so long as we agree that whatever Mom did was horrifying.
-
[…] so I think it's reasonable so long as we agree that whatever Mom did was horrifying.
Horrifying such as eating pieces of a wooden table? :ninja: That must be horribly bad for one's teeth!

Dont expect it to happen all the time. dont be spoiled. oh wait this is apforums everything has to be something else and simple is not enough.

well since people are comparing it with real life, I think Ace and Scarlet had the darkest shit happening to them in the series
Brook saw his entire crew die slowly one by one while performing their most cherished song, died alone, spent a year searching for his body, resurrected as a skeleton, and spent 50 years by himself with the corpses of his crew, and he lost his insanity, too.
That's pretty damn dark. -
Dont expect it to happen all the time. dont be spoiled. oh wait this is apforums everything has to be something else and simple is not enough.
I'm not really expecting so much as speculating, based on past history. No reason to press so hard for one option when there's not a whole lot of solid evidence for it.
-
Horrifying such as eating pieces of a wooden table? :ninja: That must be horribly bad for one's teeth!
Heh, no doubt that's what drove the giant away. I mean, who in their right mind would eat wood after a perfectly good serving of Semla? Disgusting, isn't it. And an insult to the Sun God, no less. No wonder they wouldn't speak her name anymore.
I bet to this day mothers in Elbaf keep using that threat to make their children eat properly. "Now don't you eat the table, sweetie. That's what You-Know-Who does." -
I don't agree at all. If she hadn't eaten them, why would the giants, after hearing what had happened, been so repugned by Big Mom that they even avoided using her name? The only possible answer is that Big Mom did something terrible, something despicable at that moment. In other words, she ate them. If something else had happened, the giants would have no reason to be so repugned by Big Mom, it had to be something terrible done by Big Mom herself.
As for why, from the storytelling point of view, there were two witnesses, is was to: 1) further justify the bad blood between Big Mom and the giants (of which she isn't even aware it's her fault); 2) to explain how Big Mom managed to go on, survive and prosper (with the help of that guy).
Quite frankly…i'm really curious to know how these people think that Linlin got Carmel's DF power.
In fact,I intend to listen my "Inception" CD soundtrack while I read their theories about it. -

I don't know if this was mentioned already, but we guessed so much regarding what element (or combination of elements) would cause the plan to fail, I can't help but enjoy the fact that none of those elements ended up being the reason for the failure. It was not Luffy being Luffy, it was not the bomb, it was not someone else jumping in front of the missiles, it was not this or that, it was just the fact Big Mom and her crew were underestimated - and that's the biggest thing that is annoying me in this arc.
In the window of 5 seconds, all the plan had to take place (meaning that from chapter 864 to now, less than 5 seconds passed by): they had to shoot BM while her body was weakened, Caesar had to enter with a mirror and they had to enter it while the BM pirates were paralyzed by her scream. But everything went wrong in those 5 seconds, the missiles didn't even touch her weakened body because her scream alone destroyed them, the escape was ruined because her scream also destroyed the mirror (this we could easily guess), and the swift action is ruined because Katakuri provided some earplugs to his group almost instantly.
In the next chapter want Bege to rise to the level of badassery we saw from Luffy and Law, but I am finally a bit optimistic regarding how the BM Pirates will handle it as well.

Maybe wooden furniture in Elbaf has the same sacred status as cows in India. -
I'd go further, if she didn't eat them then I'll be so upset.
All the theories about BM taking carmel's fruit without eating her are bullshit and more complicated than accepting the true: she ate everybody.
Streusen too was afraid to be too much close to her, he was keeping her far from him (and he also was far when she killed the chefs, streusen ain't no joke)Oda just said that you eat luffy you get food poisoning but because his flesh is rubber, Carmel wasn't damn rubber and also if she was bm would eat her like the table
-
wow, well I guess now the question is; how drunk/high on drugs you gotta be that banging a cannibal is not a bad idea?
Adoption into powerful families is common in Japan, especially if there isn't someone to carry on the line. I'm guessing all of Linlin's children are adopted.
-
Vinsmokes have their suits, everyone is "free", everyone is there. Fights are going to happen.
-
Wow, lots of schoolyard tactics being thrown about for an exchange of ideas between friends who share an awesome hobby.
I can very well see how Mom might not have eaten the children.
That's not to say it's what I believe at this point but the option is still there. We're all fans :)
If Linlin hadn't eaten the children, and something else had happened - for example, CP0 kidnapping them - then surely the giant running back to Elbaf would have told a different tale, one not purely focused on Linlin becoming Giant enemy #1.

It's confirmed that they are blood-related.

@Gol:
Guys I'm reading from the japanese that the last attack name before "Big Father" is not "ein grosser vater", but is a little bit different but I don't understand the meaning.
Someone can help me?
In japanese there's written 城(ルーク) イン・フォラ・グレーセ!! which is readable as "Castle (rook) IN FORA GREESE", what do you think is the correct translation?Jaimini's box translated it as "in fora gres' and said it translates as 'outside stonewall'. Don't know what language that's suppose to be.
Regardless, "Ein grosser vater" OBVIOUSLY isn't the right romanization. It doesn't fit anything in the japanese text, I don't know how they came out with that.

Hmm…I'm inclined to think that Oda was just joking when he gave this answer.
In fact,a friend of mine once said the same thing to me when I asked him about not being afraid to swin in a sea full of sharks and I'm quite sure that he isn't made of rubber or any other toxic material. -

The plan failed because ultimately Big Mom is just tougher than the plan. She both destroyed the weapons and escape plan. Big Mom toughness was underestimated not the crew. That development is surprising but let's exaggerate things to make the BM crew seems better than they are either. Had they been competent the Vinsmokes would be currently dead. Dogtooth has always been the effective one of the crew and it pretty normal to see him get in shape once Mom has destroyed the plan and gave him a window to act. Smoothie doing something would have been surprising.

I think it's italian.

I think Streussen saw Caramel faking her desth and the other children by dressing some selmas as themselves which got eaten by Linlin while the giant, on the other hand, barely see what exactly happened from his distance. The giant saw only the eating part
-
@Count:
Perhaps. But I don't really see how it would functionally add anything new than just making her angry. Which she already is. If she instead feels guilty about it, then that can work. I guess. I would still think that is too much unnecessary tippy-toeing around the truth when it's already so supposedly obvious.
To be fair, I love dark introducing something like child cannibalism is lol. I'm only suspicious of how the story is framing this.
I think even kids reading this would assume that Linlin ate them. Oda couldn't have framed it more obviously.
Either way, she's going to probably be mad at Streussen. All we know for sure is that at least Carmel has to be dead, and Linlin can still feel responsible for that. I don't really think it's just the kids being alive that matters, but if Linlin possibly learns about Carmel being tied to CP0, which makes her disillusioned about her entire dream due to that being inspired by Carmel (Oda even drew Carmel smiling with a troll face this chapter. I really feel like Oda wouldn't let her get away with still being thought of as a saint). Something like that would cause just as much of a guilt trip. Although I have no suggestions to offer about how Linlin could piece together those pieces from Streusen's currently unknown impending testimony.
The Giants could already not speak Big Mom's name after she literally killed one of their greatest heroes. Having them do so because she ate some orphans afterwards feels redundant. There's even a page already remarking how the news of killing Yoruru spread throughout the entire world. And we still need to learn about how exactly Linlin was able to get a political marriage with Elbaf despite being so supposedly hated, which makes all of this even more weird. I don't deny that the kids just running away is weak, but I would still expect it from Oda if he's trying to make Big Mom as sympathetic as possible.
And that is certainly true. But we find the truth out immediately in the same flashback chapter, whether than letting that suspense happen for what will presumably be weeks.
If Big Mom's really just a cannibal, and this is maybe because I'm just a sadist, but if I read a panel where Streussen yells that young Big Mom ate orphans in front of the entire wedding while everybody else has absolutely no clue behind the context, I would laugh my ass off reading that. It would be so random, while people at least know about Carmel from the picture lol.
maybe oda will have big mom eat multiple people at the wedding, have streusen rum to the bathroom and be eaten in one bite, jurassic park styke

I'm not saying she didn't eat the kids and Mother, I am however saying it's odd that we are introduced to her with her eating something living then to later find out it was PROBABLY homies and now this cannibalism being stroooongly suggested again. I'm sorry but I am kind of leaning towards Pudding manipulated memories on that day we first catch a glimpse of her. Although it's very likely that Big Mom just ate them and I think the only reason I don't like that explanation to be honest is because I don't think I like the whole "eat a devilfruit user and you get the powers" idea. Don't you think that Giant would have done something about such a tragedy considering he was goin to that island out of concern for orphin's and Mother's well being? I feel like he would have 1. went an killed BigMom on the spot (at least tried) or 2. PUKED and then be dubbed Puke Beard. The giants kind of look like pansies when you consider they let Big Mom live after that. They even knew her location…
I just hope this is cleared up soon and we don't have to wait 2-3 years to find out we were bring trolled about it. Or if it's never addressed directly again that's fine to and we can just agree she ate them if it's not addressed again but I think we will get some light shed on it over the next few chapters especially if the good guys and bad guys are all gonna be cooped up in Bege there will be lots of questions / panic / and hopefully lot's of light shed on the situation.
And for the member that claimed Bege wouldn't have a kitchen in the castle I say I absolutely disagree, he has a dining room and couches and stuff why wouldn't he have a kitchen? C'mon Sanji time to bake her her favorite treat croquembouche with a tamatebako bomb stuffed inside. Also what if Bege forces all the Big Mom children out of himself and makes them deal with Big Mom while everyone else watches and they are all about to get killed and Luffy can't stand watching it go down like that and him and Sanji go out and tag team Big Mom to a defeat.
Side note : would love to see an eating contest between Luffy and Big Mom and for laugh's throw Bonnie and Blackbeard in the contest as well.
Sider note : I'm glad the Cavendish cover story is done, we get it he is attractive. -

That doesn't give the posts that are saying "Why are y'all not accepting this" any more credit. I'm fine with people arguing for Big Mom having eaten everyone, but those don't come off as arguments so much as jibes.
-
She ate them all for the very important reason that the sequence was off-screened.
btw, young-Streusen really looks mischievous. I could definitely see myself reading a manga revolving around this character.
-
If Linlin hadn't eaten the children, and something else had happened - for example, CP0 kidnapping them - then surely the giant running back to Elbaf would have told a different tale, one not purely focused on Linlin becoming Giant enemy #1.
Not if she did absolutely nothing to stop it because of focusing only on eating and Linlin still at least killed Carmel.
Cool.
Sweet.
He did help her build a country so I don't think finding children would be anymore of a sidetrack. And up to this point pirates has tended to be more knowledgeable and better at infiltration than the government.
Building a country allows Linlin to stay at a home base and only focus on expanding territory. Kids being kidnapped by the World Government spawns the intent to reboot Enies Lobby and potentially war with the World Government. Streussen doesn't need that big of a hassle.
I'm not saying she won't be upset but that it would not change much to her character or even the current situation. Which I doubt this trauma would be use for. We already had the stalling Big with emotional trauma I doubt we are going to waste the trauma to redo such a minor point.
Either possibility can make her depressed and guilty, and I doubt that it would be as simple as redoing the portrait destruction phase. It would cause her to want to change. Aiming that change for the better instead of worse is what that the rest of the characters around Linlin have to do. I expect everybody to learn the truth rather than only Linlin and probably Pudding. Or else nobody is going to know how to react to a suddenly sad Big Mom and would be completely weirded out if she suddenly decided to be a better person without knowing why. Allt his family tension and focus demands a therapeutic/bonding resolution.
Your paragraph sounds as someone analyzing the flaw of kid and telling her parents what she need. To play out such a thing Big Mom would need someone to force her to do so. Which won't happen consider both her age and power. Plus such long term thing wouldn't really pay out in the manga and even less in the arc. We need a Big Mom taking a massive slap to the face and one readers can buy into. The kids are that door to the reader while Carmel is the door to Big Mom. We need need for the reader to actually care about the victims when Big Mom have to face the reality a reaction Carmel by herself cannot provide by herself. Plus Big Mom hurting innocents she did not want to hurt and value greatly is the door to her deciding to make some changes rather than others trying to change her.
Big Mom's age is irrelevant due to her having the mind of a child. She can still grow after learning truths she was not privy too rather than already hitting a ceiling of maturity she can't overturn. The reader will still care about abducted kids while Linlin was off only eating. She's still indirectly hurting innocent people by not helping them out of ignorance. And Big Mom can still slap in the face (the discipline she never got as a child from probably Luffy), but not a full defeat.
I didn't say she won't feel hurt but that Carmel being evil only plays into her narrative to continue to act the way she does. It is an argument for her to become more tyrannic not less. Exept of course if Big Mom doesn't learn the truth of Carmel but in this case there is some disconnect with the reader.
She could end up worse, but that's why we have her kids, the Straw Hats (especially Sanji, the guy who's getting praised for his kindness over and over again. He can teach Linlin a thing or two after calming her down), Pudding, as well as Lola's relatives (Chiffon and Pound, and maybe Lola makes a surprise entrance herself eventually) in order to curb Big Mom's stress. That's why they're there. I'm expecting some of sappy family support in order to ease all of the conflicts within her family. She not only realizes Carmel's flaws, but her own flaws. The latter will make her guilty.
I think you mentioned you were not sure how Bi Mom could learn the truth from the chef. In Jaimi's translation it is mentioned the chef has been on the island for some time so he could easily be a Carmel contact or have seen her discuss with some shady individuals(and do research later).
I doubt he's a contact since the narration says he was from a broken up pirate crew, while Carmel associates with CP0 and the World Government. And the latter is adding entirely new events outside of the time frame of Linlin's birthday feast that would feel too convenient.
One is a waste of Big Mom's backstory while the other have plenty interesting things to bring in a more satisfactory way. Hell even if nothing is done with both the cannibalism create a vivid image compare to how tame kid Big Mom getting tricked is.
I never said it wouldn't be a waste or that it wouldn't look tame. I actually feel apprehensive about Oda backtracking from something as engagingly dark as child cannibalism. I only want to acknowledge that the way Oda is framing the story can lead to a revelation like this if he choose, which may unfortunately seem like a copout tonally.
Yes but in this case the story present both the disgust and the name thing as big steps that came from the horror of the actions. They seem at the very least as significant as the death of one of their hero. Would Carmel's death or Big Mom's passiveness have such grave consequences? I doubt it. I could maybe picture Elbaf caring for Carmel but such great reaction from all giants because of the death of Carmel's seems highly unlikely. In those little but meaningful things I think it is the logic needed for the survival of others to work is bending the story in ridiculous ways to fit the plot.
Of course Carmel's death would have consequences and be as major as Yoruru's death. When Yoruru died, the narrator announces how both information about Linlin's monstrousness and Carmel's heroism spread everywhere involving Giants. Linlin killing her own mother, especially one as revered as Carmel, would be seen as a huge affront to the Giants. Giants even came to help build the Sheep's Home in Totland only because Carmel was there while they still didn't want to see Linlin's face. The fact that they already don't even want to see her and then deciding to not feel comfortable enough to mention her are logical steps in progression after an incident like killing Carmel, another Elbaf hero.
The strawhats have accumulate way to many great giants story to be in real trouble there. Have some problem with Loki maybe but no way they are getting on a bad foot with the giants.
It will still cause much controversy. And conflict has to come from somewhere unless Blackbeard decides to show up. Or both.
He was a baby back then so he escape living how truly awful the action was. So to his fallen in love eyes it is simply the story of how awful a human child was and the giants are forgetting how fast humans age and mature. Plus he is marrying the daughter not the mom.
That makes sense, but it's still weird how he got to learn about Lola's existence. But Oda will probably make something up for that.
Who knows. Big Mom might have heard the pseudonym plus it help the oblivious monster narrative.
I doubt it. But the fact that it fits the narrative of Big Mom being lied to so much out of fear makes me think it's more probable that she learns the entire truth for payoff. Both from her kids and about Carmel.
And Carmel's being evil plays into Big MOm being raised without moral. We took a long time for Sabo to be relevant and Doflamingo killing xdrake's father was just random trivia that came after the arc. Putting things for the far future is a pretty Oda things to do. Even the elder giant surviving is probably for the future. I would not be surprise of a Elbaf flashback involving Carmel where the giants don't know her evilness but we do.
It wasn't random trivia that came after the arc, a knowledgable reader could already tell that was Drake's father. This isn't about Oda saving things for the future, it's about Oda ONLY saving things for the future. He mostly always finds a way to make long running plotlines both currently relevant and long-term relevant. Carmel's negotiations with CP0 is still not currently relevant in the arc. Carmel's way of teaching Linlin kind of is, but it's more just elaborated background? Her behavior already made sense before, despite being flawed. And unless CP0 is showing up in Elbaf, nobody is going to know the truth about Carmel if Streussen's confession doesn't offer enough pieces for that.
Yes but even at the end of the flashback you have Doffly killing his brother with some regrets rather than laughing like a madman and his next moment is reminding how his crew is his family once again reinforcing the bond between them. And we have Oda changing the roulette to certain death or Big Mom killing respected figures or massacring village. Oda wants you to know the villain but it doesn't mean he won't do different kind. You are suppose to realize Big Mom is oblivious to her actions but you are also suppose to realize she is a monster. She is like that kid that kills ants and destroy their home. It's nothing evil to her but to ants she is a monster.
And you also have Rosinante in that scene claiming that Doflamingo doesn't really regret anything. And that family shtick got shattered with the Baby 5 reveal and Law taunting Trebol about how he's really just a tool, and Doflamingo not saying he's wrong but only telling Trebol to keep his head in the game.
The death roulette got indirectly explained in Big Mom being so traumatized from not knowing what happened to her family that she doesn't want anybody to leave her again. Which is bad, and she should be held responsible. But that's something I can see be overcome and chalked up to convoluted morals like Law, Kid, and Whitebeard. And this late in the game where only Big Mom and Kaido are left, despite being the biggest baddies, I don't expect Oda to change his game up. I would like him to, but I can't.
And for your ants analogy, the story is being geared towards making Big Mom realize how those ants feel by having redeemable attributes about her character being shown. She's done terrible things, but mainly out of ignorance and illness. She can still change if she learns about her flaws instead of overreacting, and if people stop hiding those flaws from her in fear.
Which plays better with dead children than dead evil godmother.
The latter gains pure sympathy and gratification, while the latter also gains sympathy but also sparks plenty of readers to call her a pure a monster even though it was out of her control.
The chef called her a monster and the giant turned pale, ran off to never come back and told a tale so horrific Big Mom name's was banned. So it seems some crazy stuff must have happened there. Not just Big Mom sitting around.
Big Mom's name not being mentioned isn't that big of an extension of how infamous she already was. And Big Mom sitting around while kids get kidnapped and possibly still eating Carmel, their hero, is still almost as horrific.

Still count me in on the same camp as previous chapters. In the camp where I believe it will be revealed that Big Mom has not eaten the childreen and possibly maybe even Carmel.
1. First and main reason for this would be for me - Because this is ONE PIECE
2. Because BIG MOM is implying all this time…wondering where did mother Carmel go -- and we got 2 guys who supposingly know about it
- we have a mystery which can be left up to the imagination itself, unless it is stated by someone
So I believe it will be stated, it will be resolved and it will not be resolved by the answer that this is CANIBALISM, because once again this is ONE PIECE
3. On top of everything above we also have a girl who alters memories on this island, who hates her "mother" and had a revealed "tragic past" explaining how she became twisted and what not...
We will be put into situation or rather we are, where Straw Hats together with allies are cornered inside of the Bege's castle. And now they really have only two options
1) Defeat BIG MOM and the BM' pirates
2) Make a Run for itAnd since I think option 1 is kind of waving it's own good bye for now, option B is now a question?
I personally believe it will go one of the two ways
1) Either SH's and allies receive some additional help from outside - which I personally doubt
