The comment seems to be spoken by related to the claim "They're pretty undermanned for a place that's supposed to be the entryway to an entire country," i.e., they are careless in not guarding their border at all. The questions are: (1) Is "what a carefree lot/such a careless bunch spoken by the same person who mentions the entryway, or is it a response to that person? (2) Who made the entryway claim?

I think the answer to (2) is Franky. He is taking in the situation. He also makes the comment about gunpowder; this is him making assessments.
Now, if (1) is said by the same person, it's Franky. But, the separation between bubbles makes it seem like it might not be the same person (or, maybe, one is speech and the other a thought, thus the emote in the bubble?). If it isn't Franky, then I would guess Usopp, since everyone else is preoccupied. But, then again, Usopp still seems to be engaged with Law and Zoro regarding the dragon business, as demonstrated by the little angry thought/speech bubble/poof near him.

So I'm guessing it's Franky.

He must have been talking about the vocalized sound that Raizo makes because he was comparing it to the vocalized sound that both the monkey and Luffy were making. Kanjuro was nodding in agreement to the loud, vocal sound he was hearing.

I don't think that's the sound of his footsteps, unless Raizo wears this:

Oda-sensei definitely wanted to create a connection between the monkey and Raizo. The connection between the monkey and Raizo may not be a transformation, but there is a connection nevertheless.

I think he did that because he wanted to make Kinemon think that it may be Raizo that's about to greet them because of the 'tetetete' sound. That blindfold game was related to Kanjuro's speech about Raizo because it was done in the context of that discussion. He even used 'ninja techniques' in his game: 'blindfold no jutsu'. It was like he was trying to sway Kinemon into thinking that it could be Raizo, and Kinemon responded with interjections of contemplation(umm! err!) & moments of silence, indicating deep thought on the identity of the one blindfolding him. It was very strange.

Aohige's summary on first page says the monkey is crying "Etetetetetet," while Kanjuro is saying Raizou is either a Tetetete or running ninja or he makes that sound while running (like on sound made from running on the ground), I'm nervous to go with this version given the other mistakes Mangastream made until it's cleared up.

I thought that the 'E' that precedes 'tetetete' was haphazardly the first audible sound that they began hearing at the moment the monkey entered their auditory range. If it were the repetitiveness of the word 'ete' I think it should be like this: 'ete-ete-ete-ete-ete-ete'. You know, there should be a hyphen that creates a 'glottal stop', so as to make the vowel 'e' of 'ete' glottalized. Uh-oh is pronounced differently than uhoh.

On the other panel, you see him clearly saying 'teteeeee'.

That's a strong suggestion that the 'e' that we heard before was just the first sound they heard. If it had been 'ete', he would have said 'eteeeee'.

I'm with the everyone else who says that the mink was just borrowing/given the clothes (or stole them from the ship when no one was watching, but I think that's unlikely);

The ship had no sign of plunder, so it is very unlikely that she stole them from the ship.

Oda is misleading his main audience (who are younger and not as clued into to his tricks) to think that something really bad happened to Nami and the rest like they were killed/captured and robbed. Being transformed into a mink and having their memory erased would be almost as traumatic as well (makes the place scarier if you really think about it), so why not just end the cliffhanger on that fact, by say having the log pose appear on the mink's arm (because that's nowhere to be seen on her and that's the one accessory that won't change as part of Nami's outfit).

If she were transformed in a manner that both requires some sort of clothes removal and causes some sort of temporary memory erasure or memory obfuscation or/ and a major change in personality, it would be reasonable for the log not to be on her hand. It is not part of her like the tattoo which is on her left shoulder.
Oda-sensei can always pull something like this off

I agree with you regarding the existence of humans and fishmen. However, the mink tribe's age of existence matches the age of Zou's existence: 1,000 years. Pretty strange, wouldn't you say? Humans were in existence thousands of years ago. According to genetic and fossil evidence in the real world, Homo sapiens sapiens(modern humans) emerged in Africa between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago. Either the minks settled on the elephant's back 1,000 years ago or something happened that created them there 1,000 years ago.
Remember from Ohara, the Tree of Omniscience existed 5,000 years ago. That's proof that humans in the One Piece world were in existence(at the very very very least) that long ago.

The two most plausible interpretations I see here are:
(1) This is the sound it makes when he runs, and thus "tetetete" is onomatopoeia.
(2) He verbally utters "tetetete" when he runs.

If it is not one of these two, then I don't know what else that line could mean (maybe a personal failing).

If this were any other manga, I would say that (1) is the most plausible interpretation, but this is one piece; it's entirely possible that this line is meant to be ambiguous, with (1) being plausible or even obvious, but when we meet Raizou we will find out that he actually utters "tetetete" when he runs.

Thank you for the objective analysis, dear Ned. I have provided an argument for why I believe it is the latter of the two plausible interpretations.

Hm yup. I think the theories you've posed are too far fetched. I just completely disagree. You don't need to take it as an insult to be out of place. I just feel you're choosing the less rational choice for one slight mystery. But who knows. I could be wrong. But then if the transformation theory is an any way true then I'll be questioning Oda's decision making lol. I find the idea to be poor writing given we've had transformations through 2 arcs back to back. But again that portion is solely my opinion. I stand by it as you yours.

Are you referring to the argument about Kanjuro responding to Luffy and the Monkey's vocalization? The tricky bit is that, if it is onomatopoeia, then their vocalizations would sound the way he runs. So, in both cases - (1) and (2) - it would make sense to respond to the sound the monkey and Luffy are making with "Raizou makes that sound when he runs."

Replacing "tetetete" with some other onomatopoeia might demonstrate what I mean. Let's say the monkey (and thus Luffy) said "THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP!" If Kanjuro then said "Raizou makes that sound when he runs!" it wouldn't be clear if he was referring to the sound his feet make when running or to a vocal utterance.

In any case, I do agree with you nevertheless. Someone did provide evidence that "tetetete" is a sound associated with ninjas running elsewhere, but I think that alone makes it more likely for Oda to use the trope to mislead us; it's very "One Piece" (whatever that means) for a character to have a characteristic verbal utterance, and - I think - for a sound normally associated with a ninja's feet while running to end up being verbally uttered by a ninja while he runs. One reason for this is counter-productivity of this utterance: Ninjas are supposed to be quiet, and I could very easily see a One Piece ninja ruining that by verbally uttering silly sounds.

After reading the Power Manga version, it became more obvious that those invaders that caused the destruction, were just slightly ahead of Luffy's group.
So I'm guessing that the guy that broke the gate, threw Bariete(the gate guard) off the island. That why we saw the mink falling.
The gas and gunpowder smell, was probably the hidden Minks firing at the creature or group.
They probably failed to stop them and reported it to the girl that dresses like Nami.
Just my take on the scene.

It's just a guess based on Law's statement and what Usoop saw.

Law stated that the gate was wrenched open by someone, and Usopp noticed a giant footprint at the destruction site.
It's definitely not from those skinny legged creatures used as transportation, by the Minks.

We're just going agree to disagree. I personally think it's too much of stretch that the two minks are Raizou and Nami for a huge number of reasons (to state just one, as others have said, Oda would basically being re-using what he did with Sugar on the last island, and while he does repeat plot elements and the like, he usually puts a lot more time in between) and that if it was intended that as such, it would have presented it differently.

I agree, which is why I don't that's what happened. I think the Swirly Hats have already become friends with the Minks, given they have Chopper (who is not a true human like them and could probably pass as one of them), Brook (never underestimate the power of music), and Nami (the most level headed Strawhat).

Actually, while we know that Mink tribe lived on Zou for a little less than 1,000, we don't know how long the Mink have been existed nor the elephant's exact age (just that it's over 1,000). Plus, it would probably take a very long time for the elephant to grow large enough for both others to live on it and a forest to develop on it (I suspect the Whale Tree played a role in that and the environment's maintenance, which is why that one mink ordered Carrot to ignore the Strawhats and focus on the invaders there; even if that's not true, it's clearly important to the Minks).

As a guess, the Mink's antagonistic and isolationist (probably the most extreme in this regard of all the cultures we met with maybe the exception of Wano) nature towards humans makes me think they were targets of people such as slavers, big game hunters, and/or fur trappers (whatever). Then they saw Zou passing by, and they then fled to it for their own safety because the constant movement and lack of magnetic field means it's very tough to locate (because living on a giant elephant is a really stupid idea otherwise).

American sound effects are very, very different to Japanese ones though. It's definitely a running sound: http://thejadednetwork.com/sfx/browse/tetete/. Etetete on the other hand comes from itai (ouch/pain whatever), the monkey saying ouch, ouch, ouch falling down. Also don't forget the monkey is probably Bariete (-ete). It's a typical Oda three way pun.

The thing is that Kanjuro had his eyes closed and looked surprised at the monkey falling down. The reason they didn't notice the monkey was exactly because the context was still Raizou and the ninja blindfold game to Kanjuro. He didn't notice that the conversation of the others shifted from Raizou to the falling monkey and thought it was still about Raizou because of the "tetete".

Like Ned said, it could be that Oda turns a coincidence into a real connection, but as it is presented now, it's just the sounds that are connected and used as a pun

The huge an majority of food, be it meat, vegetables or fruit has been modified over the last couple decades/centuries already.

This is in no way true. "Genetically modified" refers to human intentions during the course of creating it, not the outcome - it has no physical significance regarding the result (you could make genetically identical plants where one was GMO and the other non-GMO, if you cared enough and had the time and resources). And heirloom organics have no health benefits.

I'm really unclear on how this is on-topic, though.

I understand the feeling of doubt you're going through about what I said. Well, that's all I had to say. If I had had more information on this issue, I would have used them to either further support what I said or to support the other possibility(the Mink Nami merely resembles Nami), depending on what kind of information was given to us by the author.

The 'tetetete' that Bariete was shouting was said with a tone of voice that contains great vibrations of the vocal cords. The 'tetetete' as an onomatopoeia, in my opinion, should be said with a hushed tone of voice that contains no vibration of the vocal cords(like a whisper). That way, it would be said like how the ninja is doing it: stealthily. It's like the onomatopoeia of wind: 'whooosh'. It doesn't make any vibration of the vocal cords when it is vocalized. Since it was said with high vibrations of the vocal cords, it doesn't really describe his ninja-esque movements.

If 'tetetete' was a ninja-esque onomatopoeia for running, shouldn't it have been used in Naruto, the most famous ninja manga that has been ever made?

Furthermore, do you remember Captain Kuro? He was famous for his 'silent step'.

That's all right, my friend. Now that I am finished saying what I had to say on that possibility of Nami being transformed into a mink(which is what I personally lean to), let me share what I think of the other possibility.

Chopper and the rest saved the minks from some life-threatening danger that requires medical help, and they have gained their respect in the process.

After Sanji defeated Sheepshead, the mink girl that Sheepshead was looking for displayed interest in them.

She could have become friends with them both because she discovered that they want to do her no harm and because they saved her from Kaido's goons. The minks could have taken a liking to them because they have been helping some of their own both from danger that requires medical attention and from Kaido's goons. It is also possible that they've been fighting alongside them.

The clothing that the mink Nami was wearing was given to her by Nami for some reason.

On the cover of the chapter in which the Swirly Hats arrived at Zou, Nami was shown making a female gorilla look pretty.

Perhaps that was a foreshadowing on what's going on in this week's chapter: she was trying to make mink Nami look good by giving her those clothes.

The hair colour, slenderness, tallness, chest size, etc are all coincidental similarities. The cape that she was wearing to hide her shoulder was done like that to mislead us.

I agree with you about the rest. And the guess that you made is possible in my opinion.

I don't know what to say. I have never seen it used in a manga before. And when it is pronounced, it doesn't sound like a ninja-esque movement. Perhaps it may be used for loud running, but I don't think it could be used for stealthy movements.

Question that's almost certainly come up: What if a mink are a Zoan fruit of the same species as themselves? Would it be an enlightenment thing as was said with a human eating the Human-Human Fruit?

Since minks aren't actually the animal in question but a separate half-humanoid race, I would imagine they would gain the pure 4-legged animal form and in addition use whatever natural animal trait they may have "lost" as minkmen (hooves, claws, etc). If they were just the animal, then nothing would happen (aside from becoming a hammer) like a human eating the human fruit.

About itai; like sugoi is often used as sugee, itai can be used as itee (adjective in English?). Since this is actual speech instead of sfx I can find a lot of sound examples of just Luffy even if you want. In case of the monkey, since he's falling down he's likely mid sentence ever since starting his descent hence the etetete: "Iteeetete…, approaches the group: "...etetete".

Also don't forget the monkey is likely to be Bari-ETE. Oda loves to use his puns like this.

If someone with more knowledge on the Japanese language could weigh in on this, it would be appreciated :happy:

I got the same reaction when reading especially since Kanjuro continued after Luffy said that, I didn't take it to serious though since what I read was from Manga Panda. I'll re-read it later though.

Yeah, Luffy uses it a lot actually, especially in the anime. Garp using haki fist of love, Blackbeard draining Luffy's devil fruit power are examples where Luffy screamed out in pain to show his powers being nullified. He also uses it in a lot of gags as well.

Well, it looks like I was wrong from the last chapter discussion. As I thought the one falling would be Kaido, but it turned out to be something completely different. But that's okay. I'm actually glad I was wrong, as I preferred how it was handled in the chapter. I liked how it was executed with the falling monkey, and it felt way better in my opinion. Hopefully, we shall get more info about him. Also, I think he might be the gatekeeper that was missing.

As for the whole Mink woman wearing Nami's clothes, I think its just a character that happens to be wearing her clothes. I think Nami may have made some type of peace treaty with them, by giving them some of the clothes she had in the past as a peace offering. I also think that she might be the leader of the tribe. Anyways, can't wait to see what happens next chapter! Hopefully, we shall hear about the Swirlyhats soon enough. I'm curious what they have been up to since they have been there about a week.

In chapter 795 they reappeared. Nami was wearing something else.

Sanji and Caesar argued about staying on Big Mom ship. Which means they could had spend some time on Big Mom's ship. Or maybe not.
