Congratulations to redon and Pirateking.es people, too.
Apoo is fresh. Would be cool to have an actual character with similar design in the manga.

Kid looks like a completely different person… And Apoo doesn´t even have the same head shape anymore.
What's sad is that some of these are still better than his average female designs, because he was forced to retain certain elements of them (piano teeth, huge scars, etcetera).

Yeah, pretty much this.
But at least we will get our canon femCroc sooner or later.
Yeah, if anything, this is a testament that Oda CAN diversify his cute/attractive female characters without making them into sheer bland clones (even though they all have generally the same eyes). If anything, he should just draw a bunch of wacky male characters, FEMINIZE them and then boom, interesting 'different' looking female characters for his next chapter arc. Maybe that could be a way of getting over his mental block when it comes to female characters (though who knows how long this actually took). It's the little details that make all the difference when it comes to these designs and not just sticking a random piercing on Bonny's face.
(PS: I wonder if masculinizing his female characters will result in some really boring/plain designs like hobo Zoro/Sanij = Bonny)
Yeah, femme Apoo is one of his most distinct looking but appealing faces. Apoo was already pretty damn distinct, but if a female character showed up like that you'd immediately know she was important, because Oda put some real effort into the design.
Bonney on the other hand, lost the lipstick, and the Robin eyes that she had. (thats a pretty rare trait from Oda in general,m though Sanji gets it ocassionally in close ups… and ALL the Supernovas had it when they first appeared... but it was most pronounced on Bonney due to her eyes being larger.)
OUR LETTER IS ON SBS!!!! YESS!!!!
Holy fuck congratulations!! I'm really happy for you (guys)!
Here's his answer:
@Oda:
Yes. I've shortened it down/abbreviated it a bit, but this was a letter from Spain. The Japanese is strange in a few places, so I think they must have used translation software.* Anyway, thanks for writing. Yes, you're right about Dressrosa. It's modeled on Spain as well as the colosseum of Ancient Greece. I came up with Spain after staring at Doflamingo and thinking to myself "What country would fit this guy?" I've received a lot of SBS questions about what country was used as a model, but this one was interesting because it was pointed out by people from that actual country. I don't know if I did it all justice in my drawings, so if I've used your culture or buildings in a strange way, please forgive me.
*lol. sorry ’bout that. thank god it was still good enough!
Anyway, rack up another getting-Oda's-attention victory for AP (there's: this; RPG Time; Alina's and a few other peoples' art; Greg's everything). 1 more on our punchcard and I think we get a free large soda with our next order.
this is what oda should do from now on when making female characters. just genderbend a guy and theres more detail. also rebeccas boobs are like BOOM on that cover :/
He made way more diversity with females in Amazon Lily. However, if you find them pretty/attractive/hot/exotic or whatever, that´s up to each person. Everyone has differen´t opinions of what they find pretty.
And the only girls I see keeping characteristics of their male counterpart are Bege, Urouge and Apoo. To me, Hawkins, Kid and Law looks like Nami crossplaying them.
Congrats redon, you deserve it. :-D
Haha, I knew that opening would hit him as strange but whatever, it certainly got his attention!
So about Oda being able to draw anything and everything.
There are actually specific angles he won't draw the main cast from because he simply doesn't draw them well as such.
Food for thought.
Wuzzis?
Redon has a link to the site with the info in the 300 Million thread.
Now I'm hoping that Oda decides to use London as a setting… :ninja:
But yes, congratulations everyone involved in getting that letter published and answered! Good job :)

Totally agreed. FemApoo is the most obvious example of this.
Female Apoo kind of reminds me of Velma from Scooby Doo.
@Medical:
Female Apoo kind of reminds me of Velma from Scooby Doo.
i got that same vibe. i think it's the dorkiness.
I can only hope Apoo will cross Iva-san path at some point and never revert back.
Probably better than any female design in the whole OP.
! "Some obvious stuff like Abdullah and Jeet are based on the real life wrestlers and Ideo is based on Ideon. Law's nicknames for each Straw Hat and which Japanese prefecture they best represent. Bartolomeo is 24.
An interesting gag. Oda was originially gonna have a nipple joke where Leo says he's at "B-chiku" when he's under Robin's shirt (chiku-B is Point B but chikubi means nipple). Oda was forced to change it to "B-chiten" (just means Point B)."
Thanks CCC
Don't really have concrete evidence, but i think that dude got his info from earlier in this thread.
Don't really have concrete evidence, but i think that dude got his info from earlier in this thread.
I couldn't find the bichiku pun in the thread, the Abdullah & Jeet stuff was common knowledge but I didn't know Oda confirmed it in the SBS.. anyhow my bad for double posting if it is indeed info from earlier in the thread
EDIT: Thanks bro, I found CCC awesome translation!
I come here to check out the SBS spoilers and find another discussion about Oda and his stereotypes. It may be true, but at least take it somewhere else.
Thanks for the translation, triple C.
this…...........

How many faces can you draw for a cartoon? .. and lots of people look alike in the real world…The females look the same because he is trying to make most of them look hot
hahahaha.. i used to feel weird why some western always making a joke about chinese/japanese/asian look the same to them, and then, K-Pop happened..
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Monkey:
That's nonsense though.
I think what it is, and I think Oda even mentioned it before, is a psychological thing.
That said, I really think he should have gotten over it by now. It would be a better One Piece if so.
rather than sexist, i wonder why can't we just say that it was his(Oda) fetish to draw women like that?
rather than sexist, i wonder why can't we just say that it was his(Oda) fetish to draw women like that?
So you're telling a huge epic multi-faceted story, and for 90% of the female characters you decide to draw them almost identical because of a sexual fetish.
Nothing problematic there!
Congrats to the AP community for getting a question on SBS!! Now if we can actually get the name in the volume somewhere… seeing "From APForums" would give me a heart attack.

just kidding of course..

It's not AP that did that.

Ah I see, congrats to the spanish one piece communiy then!
The 2nd part of my post still stands tho…
Has there been a group effort by apforum to send sbs questions btw?
Congrats to the AP community for getting a question on SBS!! Now if we can actually get the name in the volume somewhere… seeing "From APForums" would give me a heart attack.
We almost did. In the intro to RPG Time, Oda wrote that I had sent in the idea(s) as a representative of an international OP fan community with members from countries all over the world. I didn't explicitly write "Arlong Park Forums" because that would seem like a shameless plug that might lower our chances.
Oh hey it's that the-creator-is-obligated-to-represent-a-certain-ethnic-demographic-in-his-work-in-a-way-i-see-fit-even-if-it-sacrifices-the-aesthetic-he's-aiming-for argument.
Well this was a fun thread but I'm off to mail Oda telling him that unless he creates a short half turkish half german character with bigass eyebrows it will be impossible for me to connect to and enjoy his manga.
Also I'll inform my artist friends that can't draw the male form for shit/have a cookie-cutter male design that they hate half the population.
But before I go, Apoo once again proves to be best Supernova. I want piano braces.

Damn man, good point, nothing would ruin One Piece's global world travel aesthetic than a variety of ethnic groups showing up.

Alinajames is Russian.

Wow! First Zachri, and now a dude with multiple veteran super-professional artist friends.
(Your hypothetical artist friends if they're actually professional are probably pissed off at their issue fyi, because it fucking sucks to have that issue)
Awesome new infos! Great pictures and good work Redon and co.!
I think that he already represents characters who would be "people of color" in our world, it's just that he doesn't draw much attention to it, he replaces them with different species when he wants to address racial issues (think most sci-fi series), and he doesn't use grey tone or whatever for the reasons that Robby pointed out.
Of course most of his characters look white anyway, but what can you do. It's popular fiction.
I think that he already represents characters who would be "people of color" in our world, it's just that he doesn't draw much attention to it
Right. Like Alabasta was just full of caucasians (or Japanese, if we are to believe the theory that pretty much any given readership will automatically view the default cartoon everyman as someone of their own race assuming skin color is close enough, which seems reasonable from a psychological standpoint, especially when so many other manga- ones with real-world settings- make "westerners" as distinctly blonde with giant noses) but the Alabastan clothing, architecture, surroundings, etc. were clearly supposed to be Middle-Eastern. It seemed really goofy when I first saw that, but…
I'd accept the "shading people is hard/takes a lot of time from a drawing perspective" excuse, there.

Cobra and Chaka definitely looked mid-eastern. Especially Cobra.
Mid-eastern people aren't necessarily dark skinned either. Like parts are yeah, but there's plenty of mostly Levantine people who you wouldn't think would need skin tones in the manga. Like think Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Palestine.
There are very distinct facial features though, and probably 75% black hair if not more.
Then again Alabasta looks like Egypt and Egyptians are pretty dark so :I
Ideo for Ideon ..
like this
!

Oh, yeah, I know that there are plenty of mid-eastern peoples who wouldn't need toning. But like you said, Alabasta is more Egypt than Jordan in pretty much every respect, superficial though those respects may be.
Ideo for Ideon ..
like this
Oda: "That's right. He's from a really old robot anime called Ideon. I'm having fun playing around with all these characters, so forgive me. He's like this ->
He's a robot with shoulders that stick out. When I was a kid, the first plastic model I ever got was of him."
The dude who wrote in with that "question" is 38 years old, haha (makes sense).

Now, Oda needs to do the Blackbeard Pirates gender-bent next. lololol
I sent the letter in the name of our spanish website Pirateking.es. We worked in the project a few weeks (our translator H-Samba did the job with Greg, CCC and Aohige help) and we sent the letter in June ^^
Congrats, guys!
After RPG Time, this is the second time letters from the AP community appeared in an SBS.

^Congrants Redon.
And Hawkings is smiling.
Apoo defenitly looks the best.
Now that I look at it again, Kid looks freakin' hot.
drake, kid and apoo look great. tho it is still jarring to see kid so adorable. i really like capone, and urouge is frightening (compared to her male counterpart)
@RobbyBevard:
Its a slippery slope. Hell, Oda decided between shanks and Nami that red hair shouldn't be toned… because thats a bitch to keep up with.
Aside from that, its black and white and Oda uses heavy blacks and crosshatch shading. Right now he drops tone on characters and leaves their eyes and mouths white occasionally, and it always looks weird. There are certainly characters he draws with features more inclined towards darker skin, you can assume them to be darker skinned if you want, just without the extra screentone step.
Hell, Jinbe is blue and he doesn't get tone either.
Light blue is not a dark tone. All fishmen have coloured skin (literally) since they are part-fish and it's light on all of them.
Forget the screentones in b/w manga, Oda only once used a slightly darker skin using colours, with Miss Monday. What lame excuse will cover that? Lack of copic markers?
The "you can assume them to be darkskinned" is a) offensive as hell b) doesn't work because
@Monkey:
He used a variety of physical facial features on…the men, anyway.
I think Oda clearly intends some characters to be something or other but just avoids the screen tone.
Like Aokiji, Mr.1, the Shandians, etc.
Aokiji was clearly not ment to be black since he's modeled after Japanese actor :getlost: Huge lips are not exclusive to Africans.
Shandians, on the other hand, are clearly based on Amerindians. Did they bother making their skin different? At least in the anime? Nooooooooooooope. Why? Cause the Japanese folks in charge of the show are tottaly ok with race erasure and don't give a damn about that.
I respect your point of view but this argument is going nowhere because it's clear that Oda doesn't do that just because he doesn't care, just like he does with female characters.
is it just me or does bonney look like kid rock ugghhhhhh
@Monkey:
Miss Valentine
Miss Doublefinger
Kalifa
Shalulia
Jewelry Bonney
Monet
Baby 5
Oh what a nice list you have there. But let's see.
Miss Doublefinger, Miss Valentine and Kalifa? All ended up on the good side with their side-stories, just like Robin, Perhona and many others previously.
Monet and Baby 5 will probably face the same fate. I really hope they won't.
Still, all of the girls mentioned just happend to work under wrong people. It's not that they are evil by themselves, they were just doing orders of higher-ups. Did we really ever see any girls acting sadistic or merciless on their own?
Shalulia is probably the only good example which is hard to take into considiration since she was hardly present in the story at all. Did she have any speaking lines? I don't remember.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
While I'm a fan of gender-benders and am still happy Oda did this, I can't help but keep on complaining…
Oda just had to remove distinct looking noses of Apoo, Kid and Drake... Cause girls can't have not-cute looking small noses, that ain't like we roll here. Almost astonishing Hawkins got to keep his. But being dark and moody person who never smiles? Nah, girls aren't like that as well, they are cheerful and nice all the time, let's wash away his personality. And time-skip Killer just can't have scars and muscles cause of course girls never have any of that, what a joke. Capone looks hardly anything like his male self at all, apart from the fat and a slightly pointed nose. Lack of eyebrows, grumpy feels? Ne-eh, not this time. None of them really look badass like their male selves do.
I find it funny that all these female designs come out AFTER I made my X Drake cosplay XD

I find it funny that all these female designs come out AFTER I made my X Drake cosplay XD
I don't think you've missed much since it's not full-body design~
FemDrake I like, because women in OP don't usually get funky hairstyles like that. Her and FemApoo are my favourites; Though in the light of FemZoros quote, I'm not sure I want to know what everyones translated lines are. (FemHawkins: I predict…a 90% chance of rainbows and unicorns!)
@Medical:
It was them as children.
Musta been a fan made genderbend then. It was in SBS style at least.
@Monkey:
Wow Zachri, I didn't know you were a professional manga artist with 70+ tankoban published, massive sales, and about sixteen years of nonstop experience in the field.
And you are?
Much skill.
Such professional.
Wow.

I'm pretty sure that's the character for love (恋) in Hawkins' quote… so yeah, prepare to be disappointed.
