Chapter 1060: Luffy's Dream
-
-
So is this set-up for a 3-way rivalry between Ancient Weapons? If Im has Uranus, Luffy has Poseidon, and Caribou's contact has Pluton, then I could see it being framed that way so that there's a good chance of one defeating the other.

- Luffy being seperated from the crew yet again. Can we for once just have the full team just land on an island and make port as they used to in the good old days. I guess these days I have to be thankful that we saw this happen a whole whopping two times in Punk Hazard and Dressrosa. Also I fail to see the blown away thing to be that much of a hassle for Luffy who can Gear 4th walk on air or for Sanji who could Air Walk after them.
The way I see it, if Luffy managed to save himself, Chopper and Bonney without a hassle then it would mean we'd get an info dump from Bonney about the Revire or why she's here, which I'd rather hold off on especially if it relates to Sabo, Cobra, or Vivi. Let that stuff sink in for a bit and while we have to deal with whatever mess Luffy lands them in. Adventure first.
I don't disagree with anything else you said (though for me, the Sabo fakeout takes away from the full impact of Uranus). In fact, it's nice to see someone else not happy with Robin's rather callous choice not to tell Luffy what happened with Teach and Koby, even if yes, plotwise, I understand why.

@Razh The fact that the line ends with a '?!!' when the rest of the wording is so mild makes me think the intended tone got lost in translation somewhere.
"This can't be the same Sabo we met in Dressrosa!!!" or a similar wording would feel more in line with the number of exclamation points and Frank's expression, while indicating a bit more of a logical familiarity.
But that's all speculative, I've got no ability to confirm it against the original Japanese...
The thought crossed my mind, but I can't see how experienced translators on both sides would make such a bad call over a relatively simple statement.
But then again Franky was actually in the room and he, Zoro and Robin were the only ones awake while Sabo recounted his childhood with Luffy and what came afterwards until the moment he reappeared. Such a needless exposition line, to jog reader's memory in case they're a goldfish, would better suit a newer addition to the crew like Jinbe. So maybe it was awkwardly translated after all?

"Luffy, remember what you said about Ace, you know the guy that ended up dead beacuse everybody who could help him waited till the last possible minute to try and save him. It's the same thing here, the only difference being that Ace was an experienced pirate who could destroy a fleet with a single fart, while Vivi is a disney princess who rides a duck into battle and is currently traumatized for witnessing her father's murder. She'll be probably fine on her own"
The crew wasn't happy, but Zoro's flawless argumentation was indisputable, so they moved on.if vivi ends up being the princess/damsel in distress b/c of a convuluted excuse by oda...
-
It will be genuinely funny if we drop anchor at Raftel and Caribou is still on the boat.
-
Even funnier his barrel, falls overboard and makes to land before anyone else.

Fair enough point about accepting things. As a matter of fact that's exactly what I did with the entire Nika fruit fiasco. But now this happens so shortly after it and I don't know, the frequency is a little bit too high for me. Of course it will sink in. But right now that one really bothers me. I do hope though that the moon/space reasoning I mention is true. Because that would at least be a good reason to pull something like this off. Not an ideal solution but a valid reason in my book.
Hey sometimes you find that one change thats a sticking point for you. For example I always like the flashbacks as a look of the tragedies that formed the strawhats and the things they can never get back but drives them forward. So I will forever hate Luffy having a flashback where he gained something from it by having a replacement brother. Especially when the first chapter already for his personal tragedy with costing Shanks his arm. Its a weird place to plant a flag but it is where I plant it and I probably will always be irked by Sabo because of it.
Nah, that's not a weird place to plant a flag. As a matter of fact, that was pretty much the straw that broke the camels back for me back. I remember Brennen and myself being the only ones who had a problem with it back then, while everybody else defended it. And even if it would be just you, there's nothing wrong with personally being irked by something. If we accept that fictional stories speak to us on personal levels then we also have to allow the idea that not each of those situations represents a positive feeling.

Seeing as how many people truly enjoyed the chapter you guys might want to skip this post because it's going to get ugly. That being said, I'll examine the good and the bad first.
The Good:
- Caribou in the barrel. I like that we went straight to the chains without even showing the crew noticing him and pinning him down. It just gives off a great "business as usual" feel. Nice invironmental storytelling there.
Yeah, I imagine the Poseidon and Pluton plot lines will really forward into motion as soon as Caribou gets to an island he can use Den Den Mushi on. After that, more will break loose.
I surely hope so. I'm dying to see what this is all about and the sooner we stop using cryptic terms like "that person" in an inner monologue the better.

I'm having no problem with an info dump. But if Luffy got blown seperated from the Strawhats again only to meet them at the next island rather than actually making port there regularly with the full crew then it just annoys me a tad.
One of the many reasons why I really like One Piece is because it speaks to the traveller in me, when the Strawhats arrive at a new location and plan their first steps to explore. That's one of the many reasons why I didn't like Fishman Island and why the beginning of Wano rubbed me the wrong way. It might not mean much to others but I just find something deeply satisfying about the Strawhats making port as a full team and decide which groups they will form to take care of which tasks. So I wouldn't like it if Luffy actually ends up crash landing into the next location.

Unless of course Oda is waiting for Caribou to also find out about Uranus, assuming Imâs Death Ball wasnât Uranus in the first place. In addition to Bonney being a possible lead to Vivi, I imagine we may see her, Shirahoshi, and Yamato again soon enough to follow-up on all this.

Oh, I agree with this.
Luffy's flashback seemed so... unnecessary. Ace was already dead, the impact of knowing more about him after his death did not enhance the tragedy. And Sabo always rubbed me the wrong way. I feel the story could be better without him.
Even latest developments, which initially made Sabo seem less like "replacement Ace", led to Sabo just being "dead" for the 3rd time.
I feel Dragon doing the things Sabo did could have been better for the story. Maybe another future development changes my mind, but so far, I'm less than impressed.
-
I've always been more interested in the story of Luffy's birth, etc., then his brotherhood with Ace and Sabo, but I stilled liked that flashback.
If you really wanted tragedy though, yeah. Sabo should have died too, but I guess Oda thought that would be too much.
-
Oda could just kill Sabo off and retcon another sibling into the story. Just make it a sister this time. That way we could pull another "who said the Espada go from 1 to 10?" situation. I already can see Oda apologists going "well technically a he only said to have two brothers but not that he has 0 sisters". Coincidentally enough Uta was introduced this year who is super popular in Japan. Just make her a canon character and tweak her history with Luffy a bit and we have our fourth sibling!
-
@Ivotas I can totally see Uta becoming Luffy's older sister figure in canon, and i honestly have no problem with it!
I don't watch the anime but i did see the episode Luffy meets Uta, and it was great!
The only thing that has bugged me about Sabo is that he has sort of taken the spotlight away from Dragon. I've been waiting for Dragon to do something since chapter 100! Now that Sabo has gotten wrecked, i hope Dragon finally does something.

I actually thought those episodes showed exactly the creative bankrupcy of Toei. They spend so much time on stretching conversations out and then when we get to the part where Uta and Luffy are actually challenging each other in different fields it, we get a five second blurb listing where Uta beat him? Why not actually showing exactly that? That could have been fun.
I remember Toei of old butchering the canonical sequence of the Davey Back Fight to include three more events just for to stretch things out. I might not have liked that it messed up the flow of lose Chopper, get Chopper back, get Foxy's flag, but I truly enjoyed the boatload of fun those three new events gave us. But nope, current Toei is not capable of writing anything entertaining by themselves. A huge missed opportunity I think.

I wholeheartadly agree. I feel like this entire Flame Emperor thing took a lot of the focus that most likely would have been used for Dragon to actually do something. But nope, Sabo I guess.

What if Uranus was just recently activated? What if itâs connected to Nikaâs awakening?
It was in the possession of Imu but couldnât be used until Joyboyâs return⌠there is a huge Strawhat in Mary Geoise after all⌠-
@Zhenja God Valley happened, thought. So, it was used at least once 40 years ago.
I guess that Uranus can't be used at will. Either it has a very specific trigger condition, limited ammo that can't be replenished (so it can only be used X more times), a really long cooldown (once every few years), or some other condition that forces Imu to use it only in very specific situations.
-

I don't think that they send a Buster Call because if Ohara is anything to go by, that one was the WG stating an example. They sent a message out what happens when you research the true history by creating a fake story around supposed "Demon's of Ohara".
God Valley just disappeared and even high ranking military officers have never heard of it until Sengoku blurted it out for no reason at all. This serms more in line with the "the island never existed" narrative we're just witnessing with Lulusia.
-
Which by the way its very weird how Sengoku can just talk about those supposedely super secret thing openly with little reason.
-
He does warn everyone to not go looking for further information.
-
Because a senile dude who has no business to be at the meeting in the first place and just blurted things out is the one to talk about keeping that piece of information a secret.
-
If it's got a cooldown of a few years then quite frankly it just makes the target of Lulusia that much more bizarre, while also taking away the threat of the damn thing that Oda should be hyping up. At least with the Death Star, the excuse was it only became fully operational after the start of the film and its use made sense (terror for Alderan and eliminating the rebels for Yavin).

Sure, the implication is that the same thing happened at God Valley, but that's just an assumption. The disappearance could've been caused by other things, one of them being Rocks...

I thought the way Sengoku said it, it sounded more like a warning to not inquire too deep about the island or else somebody with the power to wipe islands of the map might want to silence you. I don't the necessety for him to send out a "read between the lines" warning if Rocks who is supposedly dead is the one to reliliate.
-
@Bugs Iâm just raising hypothesis.
Some kind of limitation has to exist, or Imu could just wipe out everything in his path and rule through fear. Instead, he keeps himself and the weapon a secret. There must be a reason.
-
@Deicide Would Imu be able to rule through fear? I feel like if he and whatever power he has wasn't kept secret, he would have long been dethroned.
And their is no point in being king of a destroyed world.
-
It is certainly possible that God Valley got erased like Lulusia.....or there are secrets of the Celestial Dragons there and they don't want common folk asking too many questions.
-
It's a fun chapter to read, lots of little fun segments and things to speculate about. Still barf a bit everytime i see kaguya with his dumb naruto eyes. But what can you do. The gigant death beam was a nice visual at least.

Why is everybody sold on the idea of Im being a guy? Is it something in the Japanese original that makes this clear? Would have change my take as I don't know what it is but something strikes me as this character actually being a queen rather than a king.

Same.
Mainly because Im's room looks like the literal description of Sanji's / Oda's fantasy of the women's room on the Sunny - "The secret (flower) garden" (Chapter 699).
Maybe this is just a japanese trope, but it's a description that stuck with me for being kind of random.
But on the other hand, people who simply assume that the most powerful / influential entity on the planet is male are hardly to blame for it, given Oda's track record.
-
@Jabra
Oh, I have no troubles seeing the majority thinking like this especially considering Oda's track record. But it's still an overwhelming about of people go the "he" route which made me wonder if there's actually something that really indicates this. Also, I don't know but Im being a ruler him-/herself seeing that there was pictures of Luffy, Teach, Vivi and Shirahoshi we have the girls in that group are also royalty. So I somehow saw a connection there. That's in addition what you arlready mentioned about Ims room and the flower garden.
-
Personally the thin figure, garden room (and more recently the frail hand we see striking out Lulusia on the map, assuming it is Im's) always sold me on a female ruler. I have no idea where people are getting the "he" from - other than Oda's track record with women.
Only certitude I have is that gender notwithstanding, Im is one of the crazy ones. Loves Butterflies; collects giant straw hats and god knows what else in a fridge; has a weird fetish for wanted posters; wipes out islands full of people on a whim.
Not someone you would invite home for dinner, right ?
-
Imu just strikes me as a male. I can see him being a female though. I guess we will know for sure soon enough if we are really in the final saga.
-
He hardly looks human, so gender is the least of my worries with that creature
-
So Luffyâs dream.
I wonder why nobody really asks what Luffy intends to BUY with the One Piece treasure. Presumably, he assumes that it must be wealth.
The notion of Luffy wanting to âbuy the worldâ or âbuy a countryâ makes sense to me.
-
This is from the spoiler thread, and maybe it means nothing, but I still thought this was an interesting take nonetheless:
-
@electricmastro Momo too. Once he finishes his fatherâs journal. Kinâemon likely. Luffy called them 䝲é in the final chapter of Act 3, so I anticipate that they wonât join until Wanoâs borders are opened and Pluton released.

In thinking about it again, if Blackbeard invades Wano for Pluton power and/or the Road Poneglyph, then I suppose Yamato would join as part of Luffy's crew of 10 there, like Oda mentioned in an interview, so that it's Luffy's 10 Senior Officers vs. Blackbeard's 10 Titanic Captains, because Luffy and Yamato would have a common enemy at that point.
