Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
"Episode of East Blue" anime special, plus manga cover stories, coming August 26

Looks like a cool anniversary special! In hindsight, does kind of get weird with Episode of Nami treading at least some of the same waters. But regardless, I'm excited for this. Thanks YonkouProd!
-
I hope they include Logue Town too.
-
I'm expecting this to be mostly cliff-notes like super-abridged version of over 100 chapters of material plus the Buggy cover story.
Either way, I'm looking forward to it. Curious to see if they'll re-use animation from the previous specials.
-
I wonder if this will show the manga version of the beginning. That would be kinda neat.
Getting the cover stories is cool. From the East Blue, I think we never got Django's and Hatchan's, right? Would be nice if they did more specials with the rest, since it doesn't seem like most of these will be in the main anime. Though, getting Wapol's recently id give me some hope.
-
Hmm, I wonder why they are taking their time in developing a marineford special. We know it will happen, its just a matter of when.
Also I feel like East Blue has had enough special episodes, its time for other arcs to get the treatment. Wouldn't mind seeing a movie version of Skypeia or Thriller bark but especially marineford.
-
Noooooo, not another one
-
I wonder if ishizuka katsumi might work on any scene in this special , because i really miss her working on one piece and I hope to see her again
-
Director: Otsuka (ED of #616, #753, etc.)
Character Design: Sato (CD and CAD of SW, Z and Gold) -
Toei tend to base specials on events coinciding with the shows latest arc. Predicted they would have a special focusing on Sanji with Zou and everything but I guess this is the best way to do it without boring viewers to death. We already have featured flashbacks of these characters, some maybe 5 or more times, also maybe 5 or more official versions of We Are by now lol. It's still cool to see newly animated scenes nevertheless.
-
Interested in the cover stories they'll animate. Pretty good timing on this special considering what'll be happening in the main series soon-ish.
-
This could actually end up being pretty decent. If anything it will be cool to see some of the early stuff reanimated, especially the Mihawk scene, Captain Kuro, etc. I guess they might pull animation from Episode of Nami.
My only real hope is we see the real truth behind Zeff's leg in this special.
EDIT: Also, animated cover arcs? I hope we see Eneru's and Crocodile's.
-
meh, this will basically be a clipshow with new animation
They should have made a 3 cour remake of East Blue, that would've been something.
-
Now the question on my mind is if we will get a more canon version of Sanji's flashback.
Namely, will Zeff eat his leg this time?
Some parts of Syrup Island I'm also interested in. There was a bit of censorship in that arc. Longshot, but we might get a more faithful depiction in some parts.
Only downer is that we already had Episode of Luffy and Episode of Nami. Those parts will almost certainly be retreads.
-
I hope they include Logue Town too.
I'm not sure whether they will show Loguetown or not, but there is literally no better ending for Episode of East Blue than capping it off with that scene where the Straw Hats declare their dreams around the barrel before getting into Reverse Mountain.
-
They really don't want to pay me for my "Episode of Law" Dressrosa recap part 2 idea do they?
Anyway, while I'm not exactly hyped for another retelling, it's good to see that Otsuka is still involved with the franchise. I suppose this is going to be Sato's breath of fresh air before he gets stuffed back into the movie closet.

Just help me understand the logic behind creating another special when the anime desperately needs skilled animators and directors
-
Annual One Piece specials are practically mandatory at this point, and they always come around August. This was expected.
-
I'm still waiting on episode of Skypiea.
While I understand that it's for the 20th anniversary, I think an original east blue story would have been better than another recap of the canon east blue arcs. It has been reanimated numerous times at this point and episode of Nami already covered the ground that this special will cover so this doesn't make much sense. @Jakisuaki:

No it doesn't. It's doing fine as is. It's the most consistent it has been for a while in those departments. Yes it could be better obviously, but it's not in "desperate" need.
These specials have been done every single year and the same will be done in the years to come so this isn't surprising. -
Director: Otsuka (ED of #616, #753, etc.)
Character Design: Sato (CD and CAD of SW, Z and Gold)Most of this was already covered by episode of nami and episode of luffy, should of done skypiea or a complete cover page stories for 2 hours.
Not really interested in otsuka and sato would of loved a more interesting combo like komaki & Katsumi ishizuka.
Oh well episode of sabo turned out much better then expected maybe there some new content in there.
-
I can see why this special might not appeal to most of us, but it does have relevance. It's extremely relevant to what we'll be seeing from Sanji later, plus it's a good recap of the early days especially for more casual viewers; Episodes of Luffy and Nami will have been out for 5 years by the time this airs.

The anime is fine and plus Masayuki Sato only does animation on the show once in a great while
-
Slowly waiting for a Episode of Ace special for three reasons:
1. Ace's cover story animated
2. Ace vs Jinbei animated
3. To complete the ASL trilogy
But I digress. This special seems like it'll be a good watch to see the conflict with Kuro and Don Krieg reanimated. Maybe they'll include the Loguetown Arc too.
-
It'd be a bit funny if they wasted screen time by adapting Gaimon's story.

I'm just worried since the anime has been known to drop in quality before when specials/movies were being made. I don't want that to happen in Whole-Cake Island. That worry only got made worse during last weeks episode with the (in my opinion) extremely sub-par Sanji vs Judge fight, and the preview for next week:

I feel the same way

Very pretty images

IMO too pretty, also zoro looks like the hunch of notre dame there vs mihawk lol
-
It looks like this special will be using post-progressing filters (term from Sun_Chopper) similar to what DBSuper is using at the moment. Really makes each shot stand out. I wonder if the show will do the same in the future.
-
pics looks really good
now i'm really excited for zoro vs mihawk fight
also i hope they make zeff and sanji flashback like manga -
Do we know Kōnosuke Uda's exact role for the special?

Can anyone tell if that's reused animation from Episode of Nami based on that still image?

They haven't. Comparing with Episode of Nami the character models/clothing are much more detailed.

For god sake can Toei stop with this specials already and instead put more effort into the anime?

For god sake can Toei stop with this specials already and instead put more effort into the anime?
because it use to have a relatively high rating so FujiTV will strongly push for it and it help to attract more new fans who don't able to watch one piece from the beginning
-
One Piece isn't the type of long running series like Detective Conan, where anyone can pick it up anytime, skip episodes, etc. They just need to have these "recap" specials on Fuji's primetime once in a while. Even when they're not remakes, these tv movies help to keep the series popular, especially now that the movies aren't annual anymore.
And as sandman and others explained here dozens of times, it's not up to Toei - they make specials because all the franchise's owners and sponsors want it.
-
toei is a part of the ownership tho. but yeah, it can be the other owners (FujiTV and Shuisha) who push for it.
Specials used to have really high rating, and if somebody watch the live streaming of special, he/she will be annoyed by the amount of commercial breaks and the most company is profited from this is FujiTV+ the Ad agency. and specials are not that big projects like movies (no huge variety of special merch, no special events, etc), so the revenue outside the rating are probably low, so it's likely that fujiTV is the one who request specials to be done.
-
Is it me or am I seeing some Katsumi ishizuka in the preview footage.
-
I really wish you were right.
May I ask, which part of the preview lets you come to your conclusion. It seems that I can't figure it out.
-
The close up of zoro stabbed by mihawk and maybe the part with bellamarie hugging nami & her sister.
It looks a little like some of the work he did in episode of nami.
