Indecision 2016 - In Soviet Russia, we elect american president!
-
-
I don't think their sanity could survive it.
Nobody's insanity could survive it.
Harakiri over Trump as president even for a minute -
Honestly I just bring myself to hate on Trump or jump on the criticism train like most people, everything about him and everything around him seems like a joke to me.
He's just a hilarious bag of hot air that has no chance of being elected in my opinion, regardless of whether he runs against Bernie or Hilary and he seems like an easy target for people to talk about to get moral high ground on, low hanging fruit.
Now looking at stuff with young Trump I can get angry because it really drives home how much of a privileged snot with an inflated sense of self worth he is to me. -
He's just a hilarious bag of hot air that has no chance of being elected in my opinion,
Yeah. That's what everyone said about him being the republican nominee.
-
Yeah. That's what everyone said about him being the republican nominee.
I always thought he would be the Republican nominee, Just felt it, but he doesn't have the demographic support to become the actual president, he's even turning away a lot of republicans who are willing to either sit out or vote for Hillary/Bernie.
Now if he continues to clean up his message and act slightly less buffoonish I could see him pulling in some of the minority vote, but as a collective I think even he's too far for the majority of the American people in how open his bigotry is, regardless of policy positions.
(I still think he should be combated as a serious candidate though). -
Now if he continues to clean up his message and act slightly less buffoonish
That shtick is what got him this far in the first place though and altering it would alienate those groups that are his base; he's well aware of that as well judging by his refusal to condemn the Klan the other day.
-
Yeah. That's what everyone said about him being the republican nominee.
Including you too Robby?
I heard an interesting theory today: Drumpf actually doesn't want the Presidency. He just wants all the hype to add more to his image and his bank. Why? Because the dumbass wouldn't want to work 24/7 like a President is supposed to do. Look at any President, ANY President, and you see them age significantly during their years in office. Just from all the work and stress they go through. A dilettante like Drumpf would not want to be put to the grindstone like that. So either the dumbass doesn't realize how much work the President actually does, or he isn't planning on becoming the President in the end.
W. didn't seem to age all that much in 8 years I guess all the stupid and eccentrism staved that off.
-
Including you too Robby?
Yes, several months ago when it was still assume the republican party had slightly enough cohesion to stop him by dwindling down their candidates to someone else, anyone else. That they'd find some old party statesman like McCain they could potentially throw under the bus if need be to put their full support behind immediately…. or to be able to, as a group, look at the elephant in the room and go "gee, this asshole is gaining momentum and none of us want him on the ticket, maybe we shouldn't have 17 other people fighting while he does so." But its after SUper Tuesday and they've still got six guys and Bush is still getting votes and he dropped out two weeks ago!
The logical, sensible conclusion of "this guy can't possibly win" and "well yeah, but he's only polling 30% of likely to vote republicans so that's really only like 8% of the population and everyone else hates him" was based on there being SOMETHING to the party he was in. But the party failed to do that and America is just a little bit dumber and more racist than we'd like to admit, and so thus all logic failed and now he's gonna be the guy.
Now that its come this far I no longer put faith in the traditional logic that "this asshole doesn't have a chance." Theoretically, statistically, logically, he shouldn't. The fact that his own party doesn't want him should have kept him out. they should have been able to pick someone else come the big convention by having him up against just one alternate so they could debate the vote counts. But he also should have been done by November or December, or at least had the viable alternative picked out that could be regularly drawing in 30 or 40% to be competitive, and now he's the nominee barring something major happening because they couldn't stop infighting and there's really nothing anyone can do.
Traditional logic and sense is out the window on this one.
He should be destroyed by whichever Dem he goes against. But... lack of facts and being an asshole flip flopping racist idiot and liar aren't hurting him at all!
Dems should wipe the floor in the elections this go round. All the data says so, all the polling says so. WIth a Supreme COurt spot apparently and all the social issues at risk and everything else, it should be a landslide for dems. ANd yet...all the logic and polling hasn't mattered so far.
-
The Party Decides theory of political science died an ignoble death this election cycle.
-
Well I couldn't imagine Trump as the winner mostly because everything he says or does would either destroy or severly hurt the candidate. I can see the republicans beilieving that someone who declare at his inauguration Mexicans bring bunch of rapists would simply self-destruct. But somehow it seems to be impossible.
I'm at the same time fascinated by how far he could go(+ what he turned elections into), and starting to question America sanity if Trump is considered as having a shot at the White house.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Didn't he do so in the same day?
-
Didn't he do so in the same day?
Not nearly quickly enough. He also lied about not knowing who David Duke was (there's an old interview that proves it) and basically bullshitted his way out of instantly and firmly disavowing the endorsement. This is a guy who shoots from the hip at minorities, women, colleagues, losers, and haters, but he supposedly needs more time to think about whether or not to condemn a white supremacy group? Very telling. As John Oliver pointed out, either he's a racist, or he's pretending to be one. It makes little practical difference in the end.
-
@CCC:

Is Duke such a personality that you would not be able to forget him? Genuine question, I'm not american so I can't really say and I doubt Trump's ability to remember everyone he spoke against. As for being racist, he did not say that white supremacist group were an ok thing but that he needed to know what was that about on the first. It was more about playing ignorant than racism and he came forward with a straight answer hours later. His remarks on Mexicans or his ban on muslims seems much more like racism, at least in my opinion. This was more of a "careful move" that backfired.
-
My point is that he needs zero time to spew inflammatory, blatantly racist remarks, but he needs several hours to carefully consider whether or not disavowing America's most infamous hate group is the prudent thing to do.
Maybe you're not getting the nuance here because you're not American…? but I feel like it's really clear. It was posturing that further endeared him to the hardcore racists that make up his base, tempered by some bare minimum ass-covering later on. Very strategic.
As for not remembering David Duke:
[http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/mar/02/donald-trump/trumps-absurd-claim-he-knows-nothing-about-former-/@Trump:
"Well, you've got David Duke just joined — a big racist, a problem. I mean, this is not exactly the people you want in your party,"](http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/mar/02/donald-trump/trumps-absurd-claim-he-knows-nothing-about-former-/)
-
Didn't he do so in the same day?
He said the next day that he didn't really understand the question because of a bad earpiece. He disavowed them today but only well after Super Tuesday on a much smaller network and on Morning Joe, which has basically been boosting for him for months, no less.
-
There was nothing illogical about him being the Republican nominee. The base not immediately dismissing Trump as a joke was a bad sign. Everyone knew that the party and the money was backing Jeb but he was doing terrible. They should have backed Christie but by the time they realized Jeb wasn't going anywhere no matter how much money they put into him Christie was practically out of the race and they went and backed Rubio instead which was stupid. There's Kaisch who was never going to amount to anything. Fiorina who, no matter how much she embodied what they probably needed, was a woman and therefore ineligible. Everyone else is just a different shade of Trump and all of them faded into the background when put next to the real thing.
Really once you realized how much money the party was putting into Jeb and how it was getting them nowhere you knew the inmates were running the asylum. It will be interesting to see what they do about this when it comes time to back him, but also irrelevant to the outcome of the general.
I'll also agree that I don't see Trump beating Hilary or Bernie. I don't even think it will be close. I don't think that will stop everyone from acting like this is a do or die moment for the country and every vote WILL matter etc though. The real presidential race will be decided with the democratic primary.
-
He said the next day that he didn't really understand the question because of a bad earpiece. He disavowed them today but only well after Super Tuesday on a much smaller network and on Morning Joe, which has basically been boosting for him for months, no less.
Worth pointing out that Super Tuesday was primarily in the South, which Trump won most of.
-
Is Duke such a personality that you would not be able to forget him? Genuine question, I'm not american so I can't really say and I doubt Trump's ability to remember everyone he spoke against.
Duke is probably the most famous name in modern American white supremacy, and basically has been since the 90's.
Trump damn well knew about him, multiple examples of that are available. As for being racist, he did not say that white supremacist group were an ok thing but that he needed to know what was that about on the first.
Why would you need to know more about a white supremacist…
-
Did or did not Ben Carson not pull out of the race? I read somewhere he "saw no path forward" and he even won't be attending the next debate so that'll split his 3 minutes of speaking time up between Donald, Rubio, and Cruz. All I want to know who he is endorsing and how many of his supporters will actually go to Donald who he seems to be the most buddy-buddy with.
-
Not officially. He's supposed to make a definite announcement tomorrow.
-
They should have backed Christie
A governor hated by his constituents, an image of being buddy-buddy with the president who is the anathema of the party and a lot of their supporter base, and with allegations of corruption and abuse of power following him. He was not a good candidate to back by any stretch of the imagination.
and they went and backed Rubio instead which was stupid.
In any other election, Rubio would have swept this nomination, and if he had half a brain, the election. He is young, has a very compelling background story and doesn't actually run away from his heritage unlike Cruz or Jindal. He has the conservative talking points and is moderate on amnesty which would have appealed to moderates and Hispanics. Heck, even international publications like the BBC had a massive hard-on for him and anointed him as the next big thing. His poor debate performances really killed him.
Fiorina who, no matter how much she embodied what they probably needed
What the actual fuck? Let's see. She was probably the biggest war hawk on-stage, offered zero economic insight apart from "I was a CEO!", a position from which she was dismissed from because she was incompetent and drove the company into a deeper hole than it originally was in (according to multiple bright people I've talked to who jumped ship from HP and managed to find gainful employment in Silicon Valley), and had a bigger hard-on for the war on drugs than Nancy Reagan.
Everyone else is just a different shade of Trump
Bro, do you even Rand Paul?
The real presidential race will be decided with the democratic primary.
Which was decided the moment Biden decided not to run.
All hail President Clinton.
-
At the point in the race when Jeb started flailing I still think it would have been a smart choice to prop up Christie. After Sandy he had a lot of bi-partisan appeal and even if his approval ratings weren't the best they had ever been coming into this I think his personality would have done better against Trump and he still would have been as establishment as they needed him to be. Scandal really just comes with NJ so while that might be a nice place to attack him I don't think it would have hurt him too much especially in the eyes of the base. Trump is full of scandal and nobody over there gives a shit.
Really they needed someone who could keep up with Trump that they knew would follow the party lines and the only people who displayed those qualities to me were Christie and Fiorina. With the right campaigning I think they could have out Trump'd Trump. You can talk about how Rubio was born for this role but like you said, he completely wilted under fire and he lacked the ability to recover. Even if he got the nomination Clinton would have destroyed in the ensuing mech battle. I don't think he'd do well against Bernie either.
No one cares about Rand Paul. He goes on stage and might as well be talking to himself. I honestly forgot about him. He's that much of a non-factor in all of this.
You're probably right about Clinton but I really don't want that to be the case so I'll hold on until all Bernie drops out or he wins.
-
Romney gave a big speech really laying in to Trump today.
"Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud," Romney said. "His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing members of the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House, and all we get is a lousy hat."
Romney said that "dishonesty is Donald Trump's hallmark," pointing to his "bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third-grade theatrics."
-
Why would Trump voters listen to Mitt Romney though.
-
They wouldn't. Probably more aimed at middle-of-the-line conservatives who are wavering between Trumpology and loyalty to the establishment masters.
-
Soooooooo, apparently the GOP National Security Leaders have released an open letter stating they refuse to support Donald Drumpf:
http://warontherocks.com/2016/03/open-letter-on-donald-trump-from-gop-national-security-leaders/From everything I can tell this is real?
-
I don't know what terrifies me more - a fascist sitting in the White House, or the military staging a coup against him.
-
Why would Trump voters listen to Mitt Romney though.
The speech is not for Donald Trump supporters. It is to the ~60% of the Republican voters not voting Trump. He's saying, "keep not voting for Donald. Unless he wins an absolute majority of delegates, we (the party bosses) will broker a compromise candidate at the RNC."
-
Damn grab the popcorn. I mean mitt had trump out campaigning for him last time during his birther investgation. Look what they've created xD
-
At the point in the race when Jeb started flailing I still think it would have been a smart choice to prop up Christie.
I really doubt anyone else thinks that would have been a good choice. Both Rubio and Kasich would have been better choices to back than Christie.
After Sandy he had a lot of bi-partisan appeal
Any positive capital Christie might have gained among Republicans was nuked the moment he praised Obama for the federal response to Sandy.
and even if his approval ratings weren't the best they had ever been coming into this I think his personality would have done better against Trump
He also didn't taken a single cue to attack Trump in multiple debates, since he was aiming to ride on the Donald's coattails and pick up his non-Evangelical supporters once he dropped out, a strategy Cruz also followed for Trump's Evangelical supporters up until the week before Iowa.
Scandal really just comes with NJ so while that might be a nice place to attack him I don't think it would have hurt him too much
Given that NJ is his only government experience, it sure would, especially if he runs as the consensus establishment candidate.
Trump is full of scandal and nobody over there gives a shit.
Celeb spats do not come remotely close to Bridgegate.
Really they needed someone who could keep up with Trump that they knew would follow the party lines and the only people who displayed those qualities to me were Christie and Fiorina.
Were you even watching Fiorina? With the amount of hate she was spewing against Washington, she had burned her bridges with the Republican bosses long before Jeb started floundering. She was vying for the same bloc of anti-establishment support that Trump and Carson were tapping.
With the right campaigning I think they could have out Trump'd Trump.
And why would the Republican Party want that?
You can talk about how Rubio was born for this role but like you said, he completely wilted under fire and he lacked the ability to recover.
The argument here is that he and Kasich were the only choices for the party bosses to back after Jeb!'s candidacy tanked.
Even if he got the nomination Clinton would have destroyed in the ensuing mech battle.
If he had half a brain and was more articulate, he would have destroyed Clinton. He would have carried Florida and with the right VP pick, could have done well in other swing states too.
I don't think he'd do well against Bernie either.
Which doesn't matter as Bernie has less than a snowball's chance in hell of being on the ticket in November.
No one cares about Rand Paul.
I know. I just found it grating that you said every other candidate were "different shades of Trump" when Rand has consistently and repeatedly spoken out against him.
He's that much of a non-factor in all of this.
He was polling much higher than Christie and Fiorina at the time he dropped out.
-
Good lord.
/pol/ is going to fucking explode tonight. I for one am going to have a front row seat and watch the insanity and hilarity unfold.

Did someone say "Make America great again?"
Add nanomachines and the trinity is complete.
-
lol at friggin' Romney being treated like some kind of elder spokesman. I distinctly remember the GOP's attitude towards him in 2012 being akin to someone being forced to go through the day wearing the pair of pants the dog slobbered on because the rest of their pants were at the cleaners.
-
But he doesn't have a brain. A team of people working with him and all the money in the world didn't give him a brain or make him more articulate. You didn't mention Kaisch in your first reply but it's better to bring him into this than repeatedly vouching for a candidate potentials on the basis of qualities they do not possess.
And no one cares about Bridgegate. The only people who care are liberals who didn't like him in the first place.
The reason why Trump has been so hard for the party to deal with is because he represents all the bullshit the party has been spewing for decades. So they can't openly revolt against the things he says because they'd be shooting themselves in the foot. That's why it would be important for the establishment to find a candidate who could stand equally with all that garbage but would also be for the establishment. That's what I called the need to out Trump Trump and that should have been the parties goal if they wanted to actually win with the candidates they had to pick from.
You're saying they should have picked Rubio, and they did, and he was garbage. But he was only garbage because he was Rubio. If he hadn't been..

Forget Linda, bring in Vince. I'm pretty sure he's friends with The Donald already and would make the perfect VP/Supreme Court Justice in the America That Was Made Great Again.

I'm still trying to imagine Donald Trump as the GOP nominee.
Nope, still don't see it. Polls and pundits be damned, I still say it's not going to happen. It just makes no sense to make that man the representative of your party. It's one thing to fail at not letting him get this far, it's another to shake his hand and say 'I'm with this guy'. One is worse than the other. I'm not so sure it's too late for one of these candidates to drop out and endorse another candidate that can compete against Trump. Coalesce voters around one establishment candidate. Even if that doesn't happen still can't see Trump being the nom. Honestly, wouldn't believe it until it actually happened.
And if I'm wrong then so be it. I only told half the truth when I said Trump being nominated would make me happy to be wrong because, yes, while I would be happy I'd also be very embarrassed for our political system. An easy win for Democrats but more Donald Trump polluting our airwaves.
-
But he doesn't have a brain. A team of people working with him and all the money in the world didn't give him a brain or make him more articulate. You didn't mention Kaisch in your first reply but it's better to bring him into this than repeatedly vouching for a candidate potentials on the basis of qualities they do not possess.
I am not vouching for Rubio. He is so far off the deep-end on foreign policy that even thinking about vouching for him would give me a heart attack. What if he confuses Pakistan and India and bombs my home instead? I am merely pointing out that his profile (immigrant, middle-of-the-road conservative on domestic issues, war hawk, fairly popular in a pretty important swing state, might look charismatic given the right spin) would appeal more to the Republican bosses than the donut-gorging extra from Jersey Shore.
And no one cares about Bridgegate.
If he were ever relevant in the election, what do you think his opponents would be trumpeting (heh) from the rooftops? Add the spin of being a corrupt vindictive man-child and you've got a campaign dead in the water.
The reason why Trump has been so hard for the party to deal with is because he represents all the bullshit the party has been spewing for decades.
Contrary to the perception built in this place, Republican politicians vary on their stances on immigration. W was pretty pro-immigration and even worked with Congress to try and streamline the process of granting illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. The rabid xenophobia Trump has built is not something that every Republican espouses, which is why you still don't see him topping 40% in any major national poll among Republicans. Also, no one in the mainstream Republican Party has called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States. (Cue dozens of articles about nutbags in some obscure local office calling for mass-execution of all Muslims.)
That's why it would be important for the establishment to find a candidate who could stand equally with all that garbage but would also be for the establishment. That's what I called the need to out Trump Trump and that should have been the parties goal if they wanted to actually win with the candidates they had to pick from.
What sort of asinine logic is this? Someone who can out-Trump Trump would never be for the establishment because they would lose the number one reason Trump is doing so well. He is a fucking outsider and he does not listen to the establishment. Seriously, talk to a Trump supporter, or if that is too unpalatable, see some of the interviews with them on TV. This is the same reason Carson and Fiorina also got their moments in the spotlight, however brief they might have been.
-
I'm still trying to imagine Donald Trump as the GOP nominee.

Did they give you the blue pill Spec?
-
Contrary to the perception built in this place, Republican politicians vary on their stances on immigration.
Huh? Lol, what are you talking about, dude? No, not the thing about the Republican politicians varying on stances. That's obvious. They're not a Borg-like hive mind. I'm talking about the "perception" here that all Republicans are exactly aligned on immigration. Where did you even get that from? How could anyone even arrive at that conclusion when all you have to do is look at the GOP debate stage and you'll have Republican candidates on live television outlining their different immigration policies. Pffft.
The rabid xenophobia Trump has built is not something that every Republican espouses…
Again, I'm going to have to agree with you here because this is obvious. Like, if people here actually believed all Republicans were dipshits they'd have to be thinking we're living a really screwed up country where around half the populace are crazy racists.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Did they give it to me? That would imply someone else was involved in my "delusions" and there is only one pill to swallow.
I'm downing these suckers one after the other on my own accord.

I'm still trying to imagine Donald Trump as the GOP nominee..
At this point, without taking drastic measures, he is it. And there's nothing they can do to stop him.
But, they are finally, finally starting to do what they need to do. The actual drastic measures. Pledging to not support him, promising a brokered convention where they'll pick someone else if the votes aren't there overwhelmingly, trying to convince the low scorers like Carson to drop out… that declaration (if it's real) is a step they should have taken in December.
Stuff that should have been done before he got a crazy insurmountable lead, but I guess the flaw there is they were counting on Jeb Bush maybe. Who, unfortunately for them, is soft toast, and also has the weight of his brother's run on him.
Really the only thing to hope for is that he comes up a couple points short of the minimum requirement and then he can be silenced.
Or possibly shot. But he apparently wears a bulletproof vest to all his rallies, so...
-
At this point, without taking drastic measures, he is it. And there's nothing they can do to stop him.
I just literally won't believe it until(if) it happens. My whole gut feeling is going off of the hope that the GOP will not totally screw itself over by actually going ahead and nominating this guy. I would rather they willingly piss off a big portion of their voter base, sacrifice the presidency, and get a brokered convention than dive head over heels into the abyss that is Donald's Trump leadership.
How do you even wake up from that nightmare? That this is the man that represents your party? I'd be clawing my skin off I were the GOP right now.
Or possibly shot. But he apparently wears a bulletproof vest to all his rallies, so…
I wouldn't be surprised.
-
Really the only thing to hope for is that he comes up a couple points short of the minimum requirement and then he can be silenced.
At his current pace, he's projected to just barely make it over the required number of delegates and there's very little margin of error.
If they really wanted to, Democrats could really troll the GOP in open primary states by voting against Trump, making him come up just short of the necessary number, and forcing them into a brokered convention.
-
