that was my first thought. Nice skill, suppose the drawback is not being able to stretch for minutes. Love how the eye holes grow bigger than the eyes. Kinniku fusen making swollen the tissues while using CoA to endure this state is my explanation.

i think that luffy absorbed the attack(athlete Kick) from doffy and that was the reason why he didn't need to pull his fists back again … if so, it's a pretty good Defensive move
He still isn't, he has most definitely made a big leap towards it though.
Even though I am no fan of the new form there is no doubting its effectiveness as shown by Doffy's reaction.
He is smacking Doffy around but the fight isn't over yet and Luffy has not used an attack strong enough to put Doffy down which is what's needed to end the fight.
I would love for Luffy to be able to keep the strength and speed but be able to return to normal size but that may not be possible if he wants to keep his armoured elasticity.

They have time to get stronger during the journey. Everyone became a lot stronger from their introductions to Sabaody, and no reason why it can't happen again. As it stands now, I would be very disappointed if Luffy could take on a yonkou..

Luffy is ready for the New World that much is clear, Doffy does not seem to have an answer for Luffy's new durability and flexibility, still that does not mean that he could bring down an Admiral like Akainu or Aokiji. I would say Luffy is now more or less at the same level as Sabo which I am happy with, this means he can maybe hold an Admiral for a while like Sabo could but as for actually putting an Admiral down that I am not so sure of.
Luffy's new form is just soaking up Doffy's attacks like they are nothing, not so sure that would be the case against an Admirals attacks especially someone like Akainu's who really does not pull his punches at all.
One of the great things about Luffy is that despite being a small, unintimidating guy, he's still incredibly strong, clashing with guys many times his size.
I guess muscles still count even in one piece.
Guess Sanji will be the only super strong slim guy at the end.

For some reason, this page (mostly the top panel and the bottom panel) has been stuck in my mind more than Gear 4 this chapter, and I loved it to death.
One thing that sticks out is the fact that you have both a marine and a pirate helping out the citizens, both young and old. It makes me think that it alludes to the gear 4, where it's a mix of ideas, old and new. Also, it made me think of the fact that Luffy has been able to make allies of many people, and association doesn't matter.
The last panel I just like the idea of people who were enemies not too long ago are now united in a cause. Simple page, but it stood out for me.

The most interesting thing is that he's using Fuusen in such a unique way since he always used it to deflect attacks before, now he's able to defend against almost anything, even Doflamingo's cutting kick. Oda sure loves to making Kabuki type characters and references.

Enjoyed the chapter , Gear 4 is a little different something unique. Not going to say much since my thoughts have already been posted by others. Only a question comes to mind, why didn't Luffy think of this before ?? Wouldn't it make sense to increase muscle size.. Logically then increase bone density which would be more make more sense, if we're talking power and strength I would go for muscle then bone.
I'm pretty happy with Gear 4 - it's goofy (the bouncing helps take away some seriousness, which I like), it's different, it's distinct from Gears 2 and 3. I could probably do without the eyeliner, I guess, but I actually think the kabuki gorilla look is hilarious and wonderful. I can understand the dislike that it's too bulky and dials back some of the appeal we get from seeing normal-sized Luffy take on massive foes. But I don't think this is gonna be the instantaneous solution to all of Luffy's future fights, but it'll definitely be of use against massive opponents like Big Mom and Kaidou.
I also like it because it shows the kind of Devil Fruit innovations that have made people like Doflamingo and Crocodile so powerful - this is Luffy thinking harder about how he can use his powers in new and effective ways. I like that a lot.
So Luffy's like one of those really hard pink rubber balls you find in the toy aisle? cute. worried about the negative effects it'll have on his body, though.

the thing is, there's no strong reason for 'luffy is not ready to fight an admiral or yonkou'. it only based on how the reader felt.
the 'luffy's not ready' will be true if:
1. gear 4 is his last card after 2 yrs training, and somehow in the middle of their journey, luffy learn a new move (e.g gear 5)
2. after 2 years training, luffy still haven't got a clue how to handle akainu / how to revenge ace's death.
3. the 1st yonkou's or admiral's fight with luffy will come after 5 - 7 arcs/years.

Very very satisfying to see Doflamingo get tossed around like garbage. Any moment where the big boss can barely fathom how they are getting beat always makes me smile!
I figure because the cage is moving slowly it doesn't just pass through all the buildings like a hot knife through butter. I saw people questioning the meteor regarding that and naturally the speed of the meteor is what caused it to be sliced up so easily, regardless of being made of metal and rock. Now I have no idea what Zoro and the other 2 Samurai are going to come up with but I hope it doesn't totally belittle Fujitora's attempt.
And man I wish Hack would get a line now and then!

So while luffy might be able to just inflate his muscles regularly, without haki to harden his skin he might just become even more enormous. The haki is what keeps his form under so much pressure which enables him to use all these techniques and still be so bouncy.
Very impressed with Doffy in this chapter. Had fears he would get the Blueno treatment. But after see how well he took gear 4th's attacks I can put them fears to bed. Next chapter I can see Doffy turn this fight back round in his favour.

If the mangastream translation can be trusted then even Doffy comments (thought) about Luffy's might in the new form, Luffy must be hitting really hard for Doffy to have a thought like that.
Perhaps in time Luffy will be able to compress his body down even further using haki making his attack even stronger.

I have not gone through the thread yet but I think no one should jump to conclusion regarding the mechanics of gear 4 seeing that in the very chapter Doffy himself is trying to figure it out, not even Luffy explains how it works as yet. One thing I gather is that Doffy is surprise and confuse at the same time as he can't understand how Haki can be applied to a rubber body that is how I interpret that scene at least.
My take on it is that Luff applies haki to his harm as he stretche so and my reason for that is because while we have seen Luffy applying haki to his harm he only apply it on the part that is going to make impact with an enemy or thing, I could be wrong as I have not gone through the past chapters. I feel that Luffy cotes his harm as it stretch and that is one of the reasons he his able to make it change direction, therefore once he apply haki that part then becomes hard and the other part that that haki is not applied stretches. I hope what I am saying is understandable.

Why does appearance matter? The abilities he has are great and well thought out. Most people like One Piece because it doesn't try to make everything extremely generic like being attractive and edgy. Oda himself said that he only gave Luffy the rubber powers because of the silliness.
