I think we might ALL be in for surprises as to how Haki actually works with a Gomu ningen. To think….how many have felt a rubberman was "so weak" compared to so many others while not really thinking about Luffy's ingenious tactics using his own power + haki.....Goda......unreal.......just unreal. Its wise of Doffy to try figuring out how Luffy is kicking his ass but he'd better do something quick or its all over lol....
Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
-
-
Stupid question time: does Luffy have a title for the other gears? In this chapter, he said " Gear 4, Bound Man". Does that mean there might be variations in Gear 4?
Exactly… and they showed a special karaté/kung-fu position... when he called that name
So I guess Gear 4th has like 3 or 4 more options just like chopper with his transformations.--- Update From New Post Merge ---
@mario:
luffy is now franky i love it
ahaha, thought the same
-
Sigh…also glad Law's arm is fixed too, by the Dwarves just as many of us thought but still...what a relief to see that beautiful panel. I also love how Luffy, unlike others in OP, doesn't really explain his techniques lol. He doesn't need nor want to. Just a subtle yet awesome fact.
-
Good chapter. Lol at the cover page. The only requirement for Sanji in a woman is if she is good looking. Gear 4 looks ridiculously funny. For the posters who are not a fan of how Luffy looks(and I can see what you mean) maybe Luffy now knows "Life return" and he can change his body form while still being in Gear Fourth.
Question: Does the Birdcage's strings need to be supported by the clouds? I can't recall if Law said if all of Flamingo's large scale string attacks needs to be anchored to the clouds. If the answer is yes Law should mentioned this to Zoro ASAP.
-
Contrary to what I've heard a lot of people saying today, I don't think Gear 4th itself has anything to do with haki. I mean, Luffy could use Gears 2nd and 3rd before he learned haki, and now that he does know haki, he combined his gears with it to make them even stronger. But if he choses to, he can still use his gears without haki. I know it wouldn't make sense for him not to use haki, since it makes his attacks and his deffense better, I'm just saying he doesn't depend on haki to use his gears, since they are based on his Gomu Gomu powers, not haki. Gear 2nd is sped up blood flow. Gear 3rd is Bone Baloon. Gear 4th is Muscle Baloon. Combining gears with haki makes them stronger, but it's not mandatory. Gear is one thing, haki is another.
-
not liked the G4 much..perhaps it will grow on me later..
-
First we had chapter 387, where gear second was revealed, then 783, where gear fourth was revealed. And now we have this:
478 Nightmare Luffy
784 Gear 4 Luffy aka Nightmare Luffy 2.0
Colorspread full of zombies > Thriller Bark > Nightmare Luffy > Gear 4Now there definitely is no coincidence, right? xD
-
Drawback
-
I'd say its mandatory for the new world lol. All joking aside, I believe he most likely developed G4 with Haki in mind simply because of the sheer strength of the creatures on Rusukaina. I imagine he could use G4 without Haki but then the very obvious benefits would be lost or nonexistent. I must agree though on the point of "I'm just saying he doesn't depend on haki to use his gears". I mean I'm sure he can pump his body and increase muscles without Haki but even then, given how much we don't know about Haki…....or even the extent (and complexity or exhaustive knowledge?) of Luffy's powers....who knows. I've an open mind.
-
The special thing Sanji had after the time skip among the monster trio was that…he can fly and use geppou, now luffy can do it too.
Sanji needs to live up to the trio and show something big with the Big mom pirates.
I expect him to combine CoA with fire...and maybe he turns into some kind of explosive man? Or just full body red hawk?
I don't like how Gear 4 looks, but I like what it does.( looks like super saiyan 4 a bit)

Yeah, I totally agree that Gear 4th without haki would be pointless in the New World. But, well, you understood what I meant.

I would love that, but I fear that would make Chopper irrelevant. Luffy just used geppou too. He's making everyone on the irrelevant lol

Well, he needed it. Some people not long ago started question if zoro is stronger then luffy lol. Guess not, zoro fans.

Gear 4 is pretty unique. A combination of everyone's predictions and then some. I would've liked it if Gear 4 was more conservative in its appearance though. The weird flame patterns on his body and the eye shadow looks a bit much to be honest. I mean, why did he have to hakify just his eyelids? I dunno, maybe Oda had super saiyan 4 in mind when he designed gear 4 (they both have to do with 4s and all).
Though I can see how Luffy became more powerful, I still don't know how he became faster. I mean he can spring jump his way to his enemies for a surprise attack, but I can't see how he can manuever very easily in that bouncy form, especially in the air like he did in this chapter. Maybe he had Gear 2 activated as well, as we can see some form of steam coming out of his body, but its not very clear to me.
Also, I can sort of predict how this battle will end. Doflamingo will be defeated in a Bellamy inspired fashion :).
-
People forget that Oda gave Luffy rubber powers specifically because he wanted his hero to have a somewhat goofy power
-
How does his hand just bounce off the air like that after Doffy?
My guess is: Luffy used DD hit on his side to produce bounces, then channeled those bounces on his arm and drove the punch back to DD.

Eye have shadows because his skin is stretched too much and with great pressure, even if he's rubber, so you can see the dark-red skin surrounding eyes.
Like the early Gear 3rd this form is still new so that's why it looks so goofy right now and not badass-op like actual Gear 3rd.
End Games Luffy's Gear 4th will look much more awesome than this early form, that's awesome already. -

Or maybe he can bounce his fist off the air. Like geppou, but with his hands.
-
I'm laughing at everyone who keeps saying "G4 is so silly" as if it isn't Monkey D. Luffy we're talking about lol! On another note…...so Mansherry seems to have fixed Laws arm....perhaps we've yet to see the end of Law's fighting in this arc? Personally I would NOT mind him somehow giving a finishing blow to Doffy (perhaps.....Luffy will wear him out big time, and go to the assumed(?) limit of G4, where Law will enter the scene? This is one of many possible scenarios and who knows what Goda will think of but I'm not confident he's out for the count now lol.
-
And it's clear for me. DD's glasses will go in grave with him. Vergo did get defeated and could be dead, but glasses are on.

I hope Luffy takes Chopper and trains him for a few lol

Spring propulsion allows him to shoot off at high speeds, if he can push his limbs into his body and propel himself off the ground then he can reach high speeds.

People were not too thrilled when gear 3 came around so hold your horses people. At first I thought it was bad but now I love it. Mind you he is doing wayyyy more damage than gear 3 did to Lucci.
-
Here's hoping Doflamingo has something left to make this more of an equal fight. Even with this new technique, Luffy shouldn't be able to wipe the floor with someone who was previously unmatched.
Also, I wonder what the drawback to 4th is? 3rd shrinks him, so maybe 4th is something even more dire? It would have to be, otherwise it makes gears 2nd and 3rd obsolete.
-
Sp Law is healed. What do you think that boring little princess will do with her power, which Kyros have spoken about to wait for the right moment
And why there was a problem with Kyros healing not not with Law
-

Exactly if Luffy's power up looked like super saiyan or Gon from HxH people would complain. You can't win but I'm glad Oda kept it goofy and fun.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, going to call it now but I think gear 5th is going to be introduced VERY soon, 3rd was shortly introduced after 2nd so just a hunch lol.
-

Gear 3rd was goofy too when it came out… Shrinked Luffy, balloon punch etc. Now it's just hammering.
-

Why would it make them obsolete? Especially when neither of the previous gears have their original side effects any more.
Gear 3 is still the best AOE move available to Luffy and Gear 2 will remain the fastest thing for him too.Maybe he will have some after effect, but I consider that unlikely. Gear 4 is different from the other gears in the sense that he already trained for months in that gear.
-

Law was dying and Kyros wasn't?

Looks like a kabuki dancer's pose. Fits in with the kabuki-esque visual concept of the gear.

Yeah, I mentioned that, but I can't see how he can control that kind of speed apart from moving straight towards your target. As we can see, he can clearly move very fast even in mid air. He managed to superjump halfway across the island, and still be able to teleport right beside Doflamingo before he even noticed he was there.
-

I don't remember seeing Law healed. His arm was attached back, but that's pretty much it.
-
Law was dying and Kyros wasn't?
Yeah but I doubt that this was the moment Kyros have spoken about… So there is no point why Kyros haven't be healed but Law

The point of this gear is that he is using his elasticity to it's full. That means he is compressing his arms/legs that is already infused with CoA, which seems to be increasing the tensile strength of his rubber body.
But since he can nearly freely control his stretching, and haki infused rubber is still rubber, it provides a much stronger elastic force, which means stronger hits when releasing the elastic potential force when he compresses. -
well… there goes the "luffy isn't ready to fight the admiral/yonkou"
2 years training, i bet the 4th gear's isn't his last card -
I hope THEY fixed your arm has been said
Yeah, Leo and Mansherry did some emergency treatment of the arm. But Law is still lying on the floor. Waiting to recover. He wasn't fully healed. Just his arm attached back to his body.
-
…The weird flame patterns on his body and the eye shadow looks a bit much to be honest. I mean, why did he have to hakify just his eyelids?...
Whaaaaa? I think that design is amazing! It reminds me of Aka-dog's (Akainu) tattoo lol. Its so sick….Goda is a genius. Sometimes you have to try not making too much sense out of design ethics lol. Sometimes, its just about looking cool and awesome (first and foremost to the creator/author). I think he nailed it. Luffy's G4 looks amazing. Many of us loved Nightmare Luffy and I'm not sure how much of his design was taken into consideration (seems obvious that at the very least, some of it was by Goda) but its so nice to see that kind of look as more of a mainstay. Hell maybe Luffy thought back to that time and the powerup he received, etc, during his stay on Rusukaina.
-

Again so there should be no problem stop bleeding of Kyros as well–- At least that- But well Kyros is a bad-ass
-
Gear 2 we have things like Hawk Rifle, Red Hawk and Eagle Bazooka now.
Gear 3 we have Elephant Gun and Grizzly Magnum, all heavy caliber weapons.Thats only because everything is imbued with Haki. He still has is Giganto and Jet moves as well when he's not using CoA
-

That and he has inferiority issues which don't let him take help which can be used on others.

I just think that the appearance is too overwhelming for one of Luffy's standard forms, as in, forms we will see more often later on in the series. The increased muscle mass + haki would've been good enough as far as the basic appearance goes (without visual patterns). The fact is, we are going to be seeing that kabuki monkey form more often as Luffy faces tougher opponents, so hopefully it will be a form we wouldn't mind seeing.
-
@Gia:
Thats only because everything is imbued with Haki. He still has is Giganto and Jet moves as well when he's not using CoA
Still, it has exclusive moves to each gear.
-
I loved it, embodiment of one piece.
-
well… there goes the "luffy isn't ready to fight the admiral/yonkou"
2 years training, i bet the 4th gear's isn't his last cardHe still isn't, he has most definitely made a big leap towards it though.
Even though I am no fan of the new form there is no doubting its effectiveness as shown by Doffy's reaction.
He is smacking Doffy around but the fight isn't over yet and Luffy has not used an attack strong enough to put Doffy down which is what's needed to end the fight.
I would love for Luffy to be able to keep the strength and speed but be able to return to normal size but that may not be possible if he wants to keep his armoured elasticity.
He may indeed have something even better up his sleeve, we will have to wait two weeks to find out.
-
A question I have about Gear 4 is how is he keeping his rubber's elasticity while in contact with Doffy's CoA kick?
Isn't CoA supposed to bypass DF properties?
Is it because Luffy's CoA is surpassing Doffy's? or is it because he actually have air inside him which allowed him just bounced it off with his insane muscles after a small compression?
Mix of both? -
i love it. luffy looks like a big gorilla. i wonder if his voice will change in the anime.
i love that his body is finally rubber against physical attacks now. the panel of him bouncing through town is great. the haki coloring make him look more like a gorilla, from his eyes to the exposed chest. can't believe how strong luffy is, he's just throwing joker around like a ragdoll.
dofla is starting to panic. guess those glasses really are coming off at the end.

Mix of both?Don't know yet, perhaps Luffy has found a way to mix the best aspects of CoA and his rubber fruit.
Luffy was durable pre timeskip against attacks from opponents without haki due to him being rubber, it seems he has now taken the next logical step as all of his future opponents will have haki so he needed to be able to use haki in defense, he has taken it one step further by using the haki without the hardening thus keeping himself elastic just as Doffy said.
I think what Luffy has done is potentially an advanced form of haki control but it could also be that Luffy is finally being serious and his haki is a match for Doffy's.
-
Luffys gear 4 is awesome and he can fly now thats a win Doffy whos already been injured some before the main fight is gonna have hell to pay and since he used this technique all the time on the island for 2 years I dont see him having many drawbacks can't wait for the next chapter the 2 week wait again is killer though

I don't know why people complained about Gear 4th's design.
I mean, come on, that's soo.. Luffy.I read somewhere… (Jump interview?) Oda himself stated that no matter how tense a situation, Luffy's fighting style will always be silly.
From Mizu Luffy (vs Crocodile), Gear Third (vs Lucci), Nightmare Luffy (vs Moria), Gigant Fusen (against Sengoku Buddha) and now this.
