It was basically a sixty year process that started in the '20s and ended in the '80s that happened in four major phases. Here's the short form version of it.
During the post-WWI Presidencies of Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover, the Republican Party dropped pretty much all of the progressive economic policies championed by their predecessors Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft in favor of a hands-off approach where the economy was concerned.
Next came FDR and his New Deal, which basically turned the Democratic Party into an uneasy alliance of conservative Southern Democrats and their much more liberal Northern counterparts.
In the '60s, LBJ and his Great Society started the end of that alliance; a lot of Southern Democrats were unhappy with Johnson's support of civil rights legislation and began a mass exodus to the Republican Party. Directly appealing to Southern states helped Nixon win the Presidency in '68 (as did convincing the South Vietnamese government to reject any peace treaty with the North) and GOP nominees since have put more and more emphasis on winning those states.
The process was pretty much completed in the '80s and early '90s when the political power of New Deal Democrats finally faded away in the South altogether, which also coincided with the rise of the Christian Right as a political force.
Complicating things since 2009.

Exactly, which was why Kennedy was lukewarm on the subject of civil rights. LBJ may well have been in the only person in America with not only the ability to push that legislation through Congress but the will to do it as well.

Nixon also did some good reforms in the Indian Bureau (Vine Deloria Jr. acknowledged that this was a high mark in a presidency filled with bullshit and failure.)
