70 episodes?! Christ, they're bound to run out of original ideas aren't they
Hence all of season 4.

The opposite. The guarantee means they can ensure they keep the writing staff, and pace themselves and actually make plans. Imagine how much better Legend of Khorra would have been if the showrunners had actually known they were getting 52 episodes, instead of making it up 13 episodes at a time.
I think the fact that they've pretty much put their foot down on "we're not going to repeat anything… I mean it would be fun to go back to gear world but we're not doing that" is an interesting promise and challenge to themselves, and I'm curious to see where it takes them. Especially since after their midseason of "continuity doesn't matter, stop expecting things" they immediately... start throwing out tons of continuity and character progression.
That means there's probably going to end up being a lot of misses, but at least we're not getting an episode dedicated to Sideshow Bob once a season like clockwork and they're going to try new things... even if a lot of the actual formula parts grow stale.
All that said in their favor, this season was kind of weak overall and did feel repetitive despite the "variety" so hopefully they figure out some way to mix it up some more. Actual growth and change from Rick would be a good start... as opposed to having the seventh time where he goes "I'm a super genius but I'm actually a sad and lonely terrible person." while sad music plays. It overall KIND OF feels like they said basically everything they had to say in season 1 and they've been repeating since then, so...

God, that was an absolute disaster on Nick's part in every possible way the could sabotage the show they did, but sure as heck I still ain't liking S2 besides Wan and Varrick (and by extension Zhu Li).
S2 is the worst. Just do the thing, and seasons 3 and 4 get through.
The song was the best thing about the finale.
Well the DVDs are coming out near the end of September. I've been really patient, not watching even YouTube reaction videos. I'm just going to wait, and watch each episode for the first time with my friend rather than doing my normal thing and bingeing the whole season myself first.
For those of you who can still stomach this show, new season begins June 20th.
So, are we in for another season of "the subtext is that Rick is actually miserable and all his ego just makes him lonely" while the text is "RICK IS SUPER AWESOME AND CAN DO NO WRONG!!!" so loudly that the subtext just gets crushed completely and any actual attempt at poignancy or character growth is pointless?
Season 4 was by far the worst. I'll vouch for seasons 1 and 2 with love and still had fun with 3. I actually think the show is typically better when they just kind of play it for fun and let the concept work. Rick is awesome and awful and miserable and it works for me and lots of other people. I think there's a disjointedness with their initial attempts (in season 2 and 3) of developing the character, the nature of the show, and their inability to get it out in a decent time frame. They aren't The Venture Bros and the show hasn't ended with a hook that makes us anxious for what comes next all that well.
edit: Thinking about it, season 4 wasn't super bad. I guess it's pretty close to season 3 in quality. I think it just suffered from being cut in half and the hype machine dying off.
I always love the trailers. Music choice is always dope too.
This looks VERY season 2, which is good!
I see lots of fun, and that episode with everyone being Voltron types looks like a visual hoot.
I have a feeling this will be a good one.

Why bother trying anything different for a fanbase that cause Szechuan Sauce riots?

Second half was a lot better especially Vat of Acid.
I did like some of season 4, but I didn't smile at all at this trailer.
I don't know if I like Rick and Morty any more. :/
On the plus side Solar Opposites season 2 was fun.
I'll give it a try, but they kinda lost me after last seasons "Lets troll the fans who want plot and character development" Meta-train episode.
S1 is great and fun. Rick is a genius asshole that drags his grandson into fun situations for his reserarch or fun that ends up going horribly wrong.
S2 is great . Rick is an asshole that loves his grandson but drags him into fun situations for his reserarch or fun cause if he stops for to long he has to deal with how miserable he is but it always goes wrong. I didnt really care for trying to start a path of redemption for Rick because the show is at his most fun for me when unapologetic.
S3 alternated good episodes with boring ones. I think this is the episode where they started to really love the long fight with crazy scifi bit. But they were still jokes and funny character interraction around them. Its also the one where the situation has to already be at 100 instead of building to it.
And they kept alternating between the arc of Rick and the familiy that they wanted and Rick being an unapologetic asshole that the audience want. And I think thats the season where the show decided to be meaner because shocking is funny.
S4 had 2 great episodes(train and vat of Acid) and a lot of lazy ones where they replaced funny jokes with over the top scifi and violence and also meta references I guess.
The show is mostly a parody of itself at this point. Its pretty much look at all the crazy shit we can do in 20 minutes instead of Lets pick a specific simple concept and watch it slowly and logically grow absurb in a funny way. I hope they will be one great episode the next season. Out of 10 episodes there has to be be one where they dont feel like doing explosions and just do a vat of Acid.
I must be the only one who was put off by Season 2. That season made it evident to me that this show was just going to be about grimdark edgy humor and there would be no substantial plot line progression or character growth that the first season was hinting at.

That's essentially what I got out of it too, but I don't mind grimdark edgy humor (as long as it's funny) and the show was still very entertaining.
Season 4 had the heist episode, which was great, followed by the dragon sex episode, which was… unpleasant and disturbing.
Then the second half had the train episode which went so far overboard with the meta humor that I had to go online and ask people what the episode was even about. The Vat of Acid episode was the only one I liked in the second half, and by that point it was clear that they needed a writing break to refresh their brains or something because the show was no longer consistently funny.

I agree, but a lot of the time the dark stuff feels really pandering. Like Harmon knows his target audience is angsty teens and he's just trying to appeal to them on the simplest level. Or I dunno. My feelings are kinda sporadic when it comes to dark stuff.
In any case, I still like Rick and Morty enough to keep watching it, but I just feel like the show could have been more than what it is.
And thank you to whoever changed the thread title.
Wa-wa-wa why isn't the show about family anymore ?
The first episode uncensored is out on YouTube (dunno if it’s available outside the US).
Like always, it was fun. this episode was a lot of fun. For comparison, it’s been a bit but I think season 3 was my low point, with season 4 being entertaining but forgettable. This episode was pretty creative.
That second episode was actually draining to watch
The Electoral College joke was easily the best part.
! Bonus point for the Star Fox reference.
The last episode included stuff about family. It should, I said should, make this forum enjoy it a bit
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Anyway, I feel like having missed an episode though
Episode 3 was good, but it certainly missed a little bit of heart.
Anyway, I feel like having missed an episode though
Yeah, missed the previous episode… it was pretty creative I've gotta say. And immoral lol
I also enjoyed the casual shitting on Marvel studios.
Welp the circle is complete.
I feel like the promos for Rick and Morty are better than the show itself nowadays.
Hope they don't get confused that this is not Back to the Future.
Well the last three episodes sure were good stuff.
Yeah, this was an interesting season. The beginning (episodes 1 and 2) was great; then the middle (eps 3-7) ranged from "decent" to "meh", with one that was definitely not it (episode 4); and then the end (eps 8-10) was excellent and definitely nailed the landing for the season. I had a suspicion that those last three episodes would have something major/spoilery going on because all of the footage from the various trailers came from the first seven, and there was some really neat stuff in there, wrapping up several already-established plotlines while creating new ones to eventually revisit.
Only the second finale (after S2's) to end on a major cliffhanger, too. Now time for the long wait until Season 6, haha. I'm pretty sure that the writing for that, at least, has been finished for a long time (in fact, I saw somewhere recently that they've finished writing S7 now too).
Well, unexpectedly. As someone who disliked the power of family stuff this show had in season 3. I think the last two episodes weren't that bad, they were watchable even though the creators of the show seem to want to please all their fans. Those fans who are very different in their approach with the show.
A month and a half til it comes out on DVD…those crappy YouTube cuts are almost unwatchable.
I just updated myself to season 4 and 5.
The acid tank chapter was my favorite of the marathon.
I have no idea why I still am keeping up with the show. I don’t hate it but as of late the last few seasons have been me watching the episodes like on autopilot and essentially pushing the content in the back of my mind until the next episode.
Season 6 premiered yesterday. Harmon is letting “younger” writers take over. Might have been done to appease those wanting the continuity for the show Harmon and Roiland didn’t seem to really be interested in writing.
Overall a solid episode, but still feels like I’m watching on autopilot. It does address the season 5 finale and sets up a new status quo a la season 3. The episode is definitely lore focused, and has a lot for longtime fans of the show, which I heard is true for the season in general, going back to the new writers thing.
Damn that was really solid...maybe getting Roiland and Harmon out of the main script functions did something good.
If I had a nickel for every incest episode of Rick and Morty, I would have two nickles. Which isn't weird (Harmon), but it's weird that they happened in the same season.
Add one extra nickle for an episode from previous season.
So another incest joke. Damn.
Dan, is there something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?
@Johnny-B-Decent don't think he and his wife played an incest couple in Harmonquest methinks.
Apparently Justin Roiland stopped showing up to the writers room during R&M season 3
"Roiland’s colleagues would only find out he was in the office when they heard his dogs or his remote-control toy car zooming around the office."
So yeah, he's been doing the voices but he hasn't been doing the writing or the improv in some time. As long as they get a decent sound alike we'll probably barely notice.
It's weird to me. I only think seasons 1-2 are great. The rest are somewhere between meh-good. Roiland truly seems to have fucked up, though. I only sort of watch it now, but without his voices and the improv, it's just kind of dead to me. Sometimes things should die, I suppose.
Remember very little about season 6 and feel about the same for season 7. Did notice they seem to be doing more callbacks in season 7 based on the trailer so between that and the recast I’m wondering how it’ll do.
So... this season has actually been pretty good?
That pasta episode was super fucked up. And maybe one of their best episdoes?
And the episode that just aired. Hoo boy. They sure dealt with a lot of ongoing plot. I don't even want to talk about it under spoiler tags, that one needs to be seen clean as possible.
Can barely even tell the voices changed, RIck is spot on. Morty is still a little off but you can barely tell. its one of the more seamless VA replacements in an animation that I've heard.
