This has NEVER happened, never have I heard of such, nor can I find ANY evidence or discussion of such conversation ever taking place from either artists.
So. If you're certain you're not just talking bullshit, can you site a proof?
Since apparently, this "fact" is only known outside of Japan. If you cannot site a source, please kindly stay silent. Like forever.
He's probably a victim of the shit MS was spewing :D They don't even read each other's mangas as far as I know, so it's pretty improbable Mashima is stealing designs, even if it seems like he does so.
Wohooo, Sabo.

Well, I didn't realize how similar Shanks and this Gildartz look…..but if anything, it's probably just a homage. Or a coincidence.
Anyway, I'm sure that if someone wrote to Oda in a SBS and said "hey Mashima's designs look a lot like yours!", he probably would just say...."huh, really? Neat. Great* minds think alike."
....At least, I'm guessing. Point is, it's nothing major.

Probably not for another day or so.
We usually get them a day early when there's a break, so Monday night Tuesday morning (at least in my timezone)
Heh, very fun place it seems.
I wish that we got the new world bounty posters sooner than this, the merchandise art in the ones displayed is very meh.

One can only wonder what will be done near the end of One Piece or even after it ends… (for some reason i imagine Eiichiro Oda descending from the sky/moon and either giving us the final chapter/volume or great us with his blessing)

Everybody in Japan reads One Piece XP!!!
Close-minded OP fans directly attacking FT fans are ridiculous. Oda and Mashima have been ripping off of each other's character designs and verbally insulting each other in dialogue forever now, this isn't news at all. Whether they're actually good friends or like taking jabs at each other, who knows! But here's what I will say…
It's silly how Mashima is the only one ripping designs and Oda's not when presented with evidence here on AP. I'm fans of both series but if you guys wanna come out on top of FT fans, then stop using pathetic double standards, it's not helping.
Hiro Mashima sucks fucking gigantically, and anyone accusing Oda of stealing from him is absolutely fucking full of shit lol.
Seriously what the hell would Oda have to copy from that absolute hack lollll.

yeah I know is a coincidence but damn, Shanks has one arm and Gildarts has one leg and both are the cause why the main character wants to be who they are now lol I love this kinda of coincidence.
Man that video just defined what Japanese think of one piece, one piece is one with them.
If you can't look at Mishima-kun's art and tell how blatantly he ripped from Oda-san's visual style to try and get apiece of that success… then you're blind.
Rave Master was much more typical generic manga style, but it was much more visually like other contemporaries like Shaman King, and had more typical lanky 90's hero looks... and then when Fairy Tail hit he changed his design sense entirely to look more like OP, especially in the eyes. It's not coincidence that Natsu is shorter, has small eyes and an open vest/bare chest with shorts look that goes on endlessly about his nakama. Fairy Tail hit in 2006, after OP had already been a mega-hit for TEN YEARS, of course its open for being copied.
Also, One Piece is really, REALLY huge in Japan, you don't comprehend how big it is. I can't imagine any shonen author in the biz not reading it... or at the very least being aware of the characters coming and going in it from sheer osmosis.

I cracked up at Smoker. That's just fantastic.
The level of fandom really comes through - One Piece in Japan has a similar status to Doctor Who over here, it seems.
That Universal Studio thing is awesome. Also, I can only hope that the guy who does Zoro just wanders randomly through the entire park in costume asking how to get to the one piece section like 90% of the time

I'm not familiar with Doctor Who's level of popularity in the UK, but I'm really sure you're selling OP short. I think it's much much bigger than that.
I'd compare One Piece's popularity in Japan to something like Harry Potter had in the US. Except Harry Potter is also pretty popular in Japan to my knowledge, so that kind of confounds the issue
We need Aohige or CCC to tell us basically.
I feel safe in saying that it's bigger than that.
What I know of Dr Who in Britain is that it's like their version of Star Trek.
And I'm hella sure OP is much bigger than that.
@Steven:

Out of curiousity, which comparison are you referring to? Doctor Who, Harry Potter, or both?
Who is bigger here than may be apparent to those who live elsewhere…any news with Doctor Who is splashed all over our press, and everyone recognises whoever the current Doctor is, and so on. It really isn't at all limited to geeks (even if geeks are the only ones who end up writing long blog posts about it). But I think I was trying to find some kind of analogy and grabbed the first thing that came to mind. I can easily see how OP there would be bigger than DW here.
Is there an analogy in the West for its popularity, then?
@Print:

Back in the late 80's and in the 90's something similar was true of Star Trek I believe. Add to that the new Star Trek movies being really popular, and the general sense of the original 60's one, and both Nimory and Shatner being guys you can casually throw in commercials and jokes and it really doesn't sound that different.
Like a geek thing, but a popular geek thing that lots of older people remember fondly, and lots of new people will go to see in the movies.
All of that still really doesn't seem to capture what I've seen of OP.
So did some digging, and looking from a purely sales perspective, the sales of Harry Potter books in the U.S. seem to be pretty similar to the sale of One Piece volumes in Japan once you adjust for population differences (Japan's population being roughly 1/3 the US's population)
Out of curiousity, which comparison are you referring to? Doctor Who, Harry Potter, or both?
Potter, as I was around for that and felt like I had a good enough feel for the pulse of that to not be caught up in the moment. With Doctor Who, I can't speak with full certainty. I'd give the nod to OP just because of how…everywhere it is. With Potter, I always got a strong sense of the fact that if you weren't really in the know, you really didn't know too much about it beyond its existence. The Doctor Who friends I have are absolute fanatics though, and like I said, I'm not in touch with that enough to know.
The other day my girlfriend and I were at a summer festival and it's interesting to see how what used to be Pikachu pastries are being replaced with Chopper versions.
Should we dare to say that international audiences aside that OP is akin to Star Wars in Japan?

It wouldn't be a leap to say that, at least in terms of marketing–I don't want to overstate it, but the way it's plastered over just about everything that can be sold.
What makes the comparison interesting to me is the knowledge people who aren't into One Piece have about it. There are societal memes that kinda echo the "I am your father." every once in a while.
Star Wars is pretty big here too, though. Lightsaber Pocky just came out.

I don't want to give the idea that they are as big as Vader's quote, because they definitely aren't. That was just the example that came to mind since it's something from Star Wars that gets used in situations/conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with Star Wars. Maybe the Yoda voice may be a better comparison.
Things like doctored up quotes of stuff Ace and Shanks say have been popular on sites like 2ch and hamusoku. They've kinda made the leap from that to texts that people send to each other on things like LINE (smart phone app), and get some play in real life. To be fair, I think a lot of this comes from people who tend be a little more well-read with OP, but those kinda jokes don't really get lost on a lot of young people anymore. Maybe not so much Star Wars, and whatever you think something like "You are already dead." from Fist of the North Star compares to.

OMG THIS IS AMAZING.
All I could imagine during the "Sanji's Restaurant" segment is a customer being dissatisfied with his food and thereafter walking up to Sanji to say "SANJI. WHAT THE F@$& IS THIS, MAN."
I think I'm on a plane about the same time as CCC too.
I watched the video and wow! Its pretty amazing.
This must be my priority location when I go to japan, other than a maaya sakamoto and mr.children concert venue of course lol.

Around midday on Thursday? Going from Narita? Wanna get drinks?
On-topic: Uhhh… Bobby Funk definitely has a devil fruit. Gotta be. I wonder if he'll absorb someone else this week.
Boo! Using Haneda for the first time, plus it looks like time might be different anyway. Have a safe flight and let us know if you come back to visit any area you don't absolutely loathe! Maybe a nama or two or ten then!

Damn you bastard, lol that's an awesome idea and haki cannot have that feat, I assume
maybe the hat is equipped with a df?

Mask mask fruit? If he can "wear" anything it could be interesting. Luffy will be sparkly-eyed pretty often. Kind of weird that the midget takes over control though, personnality wise. Good gag potiental for the ability as well.
@Monkey:

I think it's fair to say One Piece popularity in Japan is comparable to Star Wars in US.
Obviously OP doesn't have the history of Star Wars, as it's a franchise that kicked off in the late 90s.
It's been one hell of a wait, I hope everything rises up this chapter -
more chinjao

i think it could make sense if Fuji's ability has also something to do with an object that ate a DF. (sword) it's a possibility if the New world has Objects with DFs as a more common thing (like haki) though it is far fetched)

while OP in Japan is comparable to SW in US, OP is only getting close to the 2/3 mark while SW is finished. i can't really guess what happens after OP finishes but i might suspect it could over throne the SW popularity in the US (in Japan comparably that is)
Some random guy in another forum said that Oda is stealing some characters designing from Fairy Tail by referring to these:
Link 1
Link 2
Pure BS..
It's almost as bad as this quote I read from a Bleach fan in NF:
"I realize it's popular online to misrepresent and troll Bleach, but the manga is higher quality than OP at the very least. Better art quality, better writing, better characters, and a better setting. Luffy is a boring protagonist in a boring setting."
