Jinbe, and Oda through Jinbe's words, admitted that he and Luffy were at the very least roughly equals BEFORE the TS. Unless Jinbe's improved at the same rate as Luffy (extremely unlikely), he's fallen behind.
Chapter 628: "Cleansing" Discussion

-
The more the episodes come out,the more that i get covinced that Jinbei will join the crew.He even did the the weird face expression, living aside a little bit his serious profile, which is a big sign that he could join. Also as already told i think that Luffy is clearly superior over Jinbei in land.
However no matter how many the signs are i cannot believe that Jinbei will join for one reason:He represents a very wise and grown up individual, which is well known and respected in the world of One Piece and has already reached his peak(mainly speaking about strenght). All the other SHs weren't well known,or just had bad reputation(Robin,Franky,Zoro) and were all young(not counting Brook which i think also died young).
Jinbei seems as a very realized person which already has been through many things(i mean adventures). On the other hand almost every person that joined the SHs wanted to live and start new adventures, and generally see and explore the vast sea!But Jinbei has already done these things so…I don't know..He just seems very old to me to join. -
I just hope Oda doesn't pussify Jinbe, even on land. Losing is OK, but not before exchanging blows first.
-
Ace kicked Luffy's butt, Ace and Jimbei fought to a draw, and here Jimbei and Luffy are now.
….... why is the most important part, "Luffy was trained for year and a half under tutelage of Silvers Reyleigh, RIGHT HAND OF PIRATE KING" omitted in that line of thought?
-
I don't know how I forgot to stress that part in my book.
-
Characters don't just progressively get stronger indefinitely. The Strawhats got strong so fast because they were teenagers becoming adults, so throughout the story it makes sense for them to get really strong, really fast. At some point you hone your skills to a certain point and it's usually downhill from there.. WB, Garp.. probably Shiki too. If you're 50 and you train for a year it's not going to be any gains near a 18 year old would have.
I called this fight for months, but I didn't expect it to happen like this.. so many ways it can go.. but I think they'll fight to a stalemate and go team up against the NFP. Jinbei should be the strongest Fishman, it would kill the tension with Hodi if Luffy goes over too easily. -
i think luffy is more powerfull than jinbe.. but what bothers me is that in the entire flashback the marines did nothing but charachterising jinbe as fearsome andtroublesome.. and after the flashback we get to this situation.. is he realy this powerfull? if the fight goes on i believe at least that luffy would break a sweat till he beats him. beacause they dont have so much time in theyr hands and i believe that this is a big troublesome situation for the strawhats.. the fight propably wont happen… good chatpter though i didnt like the turn of events
-
If Luffy beats Jinbei, it will have more impact on fishmen than if he beats Ho(r)dy ! So Jinbei should not fight him, unless he is absolutely confident that he can stop him.
-
Why does it always come down to a discussion.."who is stronger\ who will win the fight?"sigh
In this case iam pretty sure that we wont even get a fight to the end, it will be just a few hits and not a 3-day long fight like with Ace.(they don
t even have he time for that right now)
Also Jinbe defeating Luffy now would just make the whole 2 year training…nothing worth at all. -
I hope Joy Boy's apology isn't about something he did personally, and that it isn't directed to a specific someone or at least not someone he knew.
I would think that this is how the other type of poneglyphs work. Rather than just putting events/information in a specific order, it would be mentioned in these letters and you would have to make sense of them. This could be our first real information of the AC/VC, and Joy Boy would be one of the main dudes at the time.
Also Joy Boy reminded me of The Boss.
-
Also Joy Boy reminded me of The Boss.
Well she was known as The Joy while she was in the Cobra Unit, so yeah.
-
Five bucks says the fight won't last more than 3 pages.
-
I think "Joy Boy" is a fishman who lived before the void century.
He could have been a guy who brought peace and freedom to the fishman race, which lived at that time under the sun with the ancient kingdom as their friends.
After the ancient kingdom lost their power to the WG those fishman were forced to hide under the sea, and that`s why the ancient kingdom people wrote an apology to "Joy Boy", who they may have promised that his race could live forever in peace under the sun. -
I'm surprised you guys actually expect them to fight. I immediately thought that Jinbe saw Luffy won't back down (he knows Luffy by now) and thought: "If you don't intend on stopping, then there's no other choice … BUT TO FIGHT TOGETHER LIKE MEN!"
-

More like this:
"If you don't intend on stopping, then there's no other choice …
... I will protect you even if it costs my life"

Made me chuckle.
sooo… really nobody else found the drawings a bit off this chapter?:(

i find this arc soooooooooooooo much boring, now even more with the crybaby ability …..one like Hacchan easily defeated a sea king...whats the matter...

As epic as that would have been to end the chapter (thinking a double page of Luffy and Jinbe side-by-side cracking knuckles and tryna look hard), I half-expected the two to clash since Jinbe was eyeing Luffy up on the marine warship while they were travelling to the Marineford. Though I'm a little confused about how Jinbe could hold a vengeance toward Luffy for defeating Arlong, after the current flashback reveals that Jinbe would have been more than happy that someone stopped Arlong. But since Jinbe said back then "that's for later" when thinking about Luffy defeating Arlong, I thought - Fishman Island !! Jinbe vs Luffy !! Get your tickets !! … start with the MGM fight night style advertising promotions (sadly no weigh in - though Jinbe would come in at a couple of hundred lbs higher).
-
blegh oda has really been in a rut. this chapter is no different: a mangled, hurried, cliche'ed mess :( oh, and jinbe is about to get his brains knocked out :p
-
@$abZ
There Jinbe didn`t have any intention to fight Luffy.
He wanted to thank him for stopping Arlong and nothing else.
http://read.mangashare.com/One-Piece/chapter-549/page007.html -
I think Nami will just bump their heads and show us what all those points in Int gave her. Luffy and Hodi must fight, but if a correct explanation will be given, it will not be a fight between "a human and a fishman". Nothing racial, only personal.
And I absolutely love cover and the colorspread. Now it cuts like a knife~! -

http://read.mangashare.com/One-Piece/chapter-549/page007.htmlThank him by starting a fight !!
… Yeah I actually forgot that.
-
Jinbe rly acts out of his mind…
I mean he could also said to Luffy that he should rescue his crewmates, while he goes after Hodi.
Well, what do we expect..he`s a fish! racist joke -
sooo… really nobody else found the drawings a bit off this chapter?:(
Nope. I thought everything was fine.
-
@Don:
Jinbe rly acts out of his mind…

Well, what do we expect..he`s a fish! racist jokeI think Luffy is thinking more along the lines of "don't fuck with my crew, or I'll kick your ass" - and Jinbe knows that it'll be hard for him to stop Luffy from doing that without resorting to a fight.
-
Sure, Luffy would do everything for his crew and Hodi open declared war to his crew…he already set a fucking trap to kill three.
That Luffy has to go against him should be clear for Jinbe, but Jinbe also knows that a human who defeats Hodi wont help to get rid of the bad picture those fishman have on humans. But still first priority for Luffy should be to rescue his crewmates and after that he won
t be stopable to crush Hodi.
But while Luffy helps his crewmates Jinbe could use his power(which he now wastes on Luffy) to go against Hodi.
But i think Jinbe knows that he cant alone defeat this guy , or else he could have done so in the past year. I don
t know for what Jinbe is waiting, but now he has only 3 hours left before Hodi will kill the king, so in my opinion he should fucking go against Hodi will all his power instead of fighting Luffy ,who he should now won`t just stand there now and wait, while his crewmates are in danger.(and also other innocent people) -
Jinbei is plain stupid. Luffy will punch some sense into him like Jinbei has done at AL
-

Thats exactly what I thought I had to read it twice to see their intentions to fight
-
Awesome chapter and color spread. Oda was teasing us with SHP post time skip power. Very intriguing to see how strong Luffy after time skip. Jinbei is a good choice to know Luffy's strength and how's his position compared to One Piece World's top fighters.
My list of the strongest fighters in OP:
1st tiers: The Yonkous, Sengoku, Garp
2nd tiers: The Admirals
3rd tiers: Shichibukai (Mihawk and Dofla maybe the exception, they might be as strong as Admirals), Marco, Jozu, Vista, Ace.
4th tiers: Vice Admirals, Strawhat top three pre-timeskip, Supernovas.
So post timeskip, where's Luffy at that list? I think he'll be as strong as the Admirals and this fight vs Jinbei will show that.
He's that confident in this chapter. He must have known he's now stronger than Jinbei and Ace from two years ago. And we know Jinbei has peaked. He can't be much stronger than how he was 2 years ago.
Sorry if this topic has been discussed before. -
Moreso then Ace beating Luffy without that fire devil fruit? It was practically shoved down our throats that Ace was the stronger fighter then Luffy, and Jimbei the only warrior alive who's his equal. Now, if a real fight breaks out either side could win but Luffy shouldn't have an easy fight by any means. Shouldn't the confirmation that Luffy surpassed his brother be a little more special?
Are you serious? Jinbe the only warrior equal than Ace? Jesus fuck no.
But I don't want to lose my starting point, Jimbei vs. Luffy! I regret mentioning things like "either side could win," when I want to argue something much less. Are people suggesting this'll be a squash match in Luffy's favor? Cause I'd like to think Jimbei during the Marineford war earned more respect then that. Did he really seem that weak back then? The guy who tied with Ace, punch Moria in the face, and caught Akainu's punch in his hand? I'm just surprised people think so little of Jimbei. I'd think more people should expect a good fight from both sides. …..anyone want to bet on it?
Luffy has got to start improving, he's soon gonna have to fight Admirals, Younkou's, Blackbeard and shit. Jinbe is a high-level fighter, but he's not Top-Tier, Luffy needs to start evolving.
If we get to see Luffy VS Jinbe in its entirety, I guarantee Luffy will win, maybe not in a squash match, but it will not be too hard ala Luffy VS Lucci.
-
You know, it's funny to see that Hodi plans to execute the King at Gyoncorde Plaza, the same place where Queen Otohime was shot.
-
…I apologize for splitting this all up so much.
That did make it tough to read, but regardless…wait 'til next week? Nothing's getting resolved at this rate, and I just don't agree with the age thing.
@SGR:
Are you serious? Jinbe the only warrior equal than Ace? Jesus fuck no.
Keep in mind I'm not including people who are stronger then Ace. I mean that they are, regardless of abilities, equal. Or do you mean there's another fighter "equal" to Ace, cause that's the only thing I want to clarify.
Luffy has got to start improving, he's soon gonna have to fight Admirals, Younkou's, Blackbeard and shit. Jinbe is a high-level fighter, but he's not Top-Tier, Luffy needs to start evolving.

Wait, wait, that's not as important as you think. Ever watch DBZ? See the fight between Goku and Ginyu? There was a subtext that if Goku didn't beat Ginyu easy, then he'd be no match for Frieza. It's a shonen plot device, I wishI had a name for it, but yeah it happens all the time–a fighter struggles against a weaker enemy to create suspense. Though I don't think Jimbei is that much weaker, but I hope you get what I mean. A struggle for Luffy now doesn't doom him in the New World.
But yeah, I mostly agree with what you're saying about Luffy vs. Jimbe, though I doubt it'll get to the point were either fighter is really injured before an interruption.
-
Nice chapter.
I'm really appreciating Hodi now. He's become a very nasty and interesting villian.
The apology on the poneglyph is probably meant for the people of Fishman island when their ansectors tried to make it to the surface, Neptune mentioned it before.
!

Hacchan didn't defeat a Sea King, at least not the type that Shirahoshi summoned, it wasn't even half the size of Moomoo.

Link doesn't work for me.
-
Works fine for me :( .
-
Are people really surprised that Monkey D. "never listen to anything anybody says, ever" Luffy is disobeying Jinbei's request? Ever since Sabaody & Marineford Luffy has been itching for a chance to prove to himself that he is strong enough to protect his crew and his loved ones. Now that Hodi has 3 of them locked up and is planning on drowning them, I'm not even a little bit surprised that Luffy is still going to go there. It'll probably Jinbei or Fukaboshi who ends up taking Hodi down in the long run but I can definitely see a brief exchange between Hodi and Luffy.

Really nice of you still remembering that, I've read back, what, at least 3 times, but in such a situation I still don't have all of those pieces of information present at once - I'm nearly dead-certain that it is exactly about this, and will be explained together or at least establish a proper connection once it's explained…
What I actually liked MOST about this chapter was not the pretty much back-to-normal, steady pacing, or the proper announcement of shit going down now by Hodi, or the teaser of seeing Luffy's post timeskip powers in a proper fight - it's actually how nicely Oda gave each of the crew a decent bit of panel-time, back to the jokes and crew interactions - and ALL of them. Loved it
-
Joy Boy…surely a name with which you want to go down in history.
The fight stupid vs. stupid looks like fun, i expect nami slaps soon.
Overall after alot of chapters that i found strangely boring this one had moments of good old straw hat vibes (robin & glyphs, the three stooges in the cage). Liked it.

Wow, that's really neat that you remembered, especially with so much going on in this Arc. I wouldn't be surprised if Joy Boy (such a weird name still) was one of those ancestors that ended up failing and apologizing with his final words going onto the Poneglyph. Kind of reminds me a bit of the present-past scenario from Skypiea a little - something's repeating itself again and here comes the Straw Hats to interfere so things don't go down exactly like they did in ages past.

wow thats insightful…if only u didn't say exactly whats already been said in the manga without making any other connections...

Are you serious…. If Luffy can't beat Jinbe what's the fuckin point.... What's the fuckin point??? You say he's not doomed and I say he's up shit's creek without a paddle. It would defeat the whole purpose of the timeskip. It might not be easy so to speak but it should be clear that Luffy's stronger. I don;t think he's just gonna one punch Jinbe lol.
AND BESIDES THEY ARE NOT GONING TO FIGHT THAT SERIOUSLY IF THEY EVEN DO FIGHT!!!
So many people think this is going to be an epic showdown between Jinbe and Luffy. They don't have the fuckin time to fight. How are they supposed to accomplish their goals (which they only have 3 hours to do) when they are beating up on each other. You really think Nami is going to let these two battle it out and watch while she knows zoro and the lads are about to drown... I think not. Here's how the fight is gonna go down.
Jinbe uses water gun... it's not very effective...
Luffy uses jet pistol... It's super effective!
A wild Nami appears!!!
Nami uses double slap.
Jinbe feints...
Luffy feints... -
When Nami uses double slap and it`s effective on Jinbe, that would totally prove that he will be the next nakama. ;)
-
Do people think there will actually be a fight?

But, seeing that Nami and the others are there, as well as Hacchi and the princess - I can't think they'd let those two go serious at all. It MIGHT happened, but it's kind of unlikely.
Also, Decken might be coming in on some corals any second…
