Hmm I kinda expected something more. I was much more upset at Merry's death then at Ace's barbecue
483: ''Searching for the Answer - Fire-Fist Ace Dies on the Battlefield''

Because Merry was a much more likable character .
-
Well, they went to the line of expectations set before them. Good job, Toei.
Anyone think they're gonna change the clip of Luffy smiling at Ace in the end of Opening 13? It doesn't fit anymore. Then again, the entirety of Opening 12 didn't fit.

Why would they change it? It still fits, this opening was supposed to highlight how the arc focused on Ace and Luffy. Now that he's dead we need to get rid of him smiling at seeing his brother?

Alright, don't wanna derail the thread. It was just an idea (albeit a bad one).
-
Yeah… not as emotional as Merry.
And this isn't really a complaint, but they're giving Akainu some really wonky proportions (shoulders 7x as broad as the width of his head?).
Off-topic: Sakono- is your avatar a picture of history's greatest sniper, simo hayha? I read about him a few years ago and that pic looks really familiar...
-
I know that I might be a little behind the ball here, but I think the main reason that they didn't cut half of Whitebeard's face off was because it would of taken away the viewer's attention from Ace and made his death less emotional. If it wasn't taken out, the moment would have been ruined. If I were in Toei's shoes, I would of done the exact same scene.
P.S. Great episode. Nearly cried at the end.
-
As if fisting doesn't count…
! That was only his quake power
Combined with Haki. You know, since his hands didn't melt and he actually hurt Akainu.
-
It's because it's too violent. You honestly believed they were gonna keep Whitebeard with half his head blown off in the anime?
-_-
-
Pretty good and powerful episode
-

-_-
Can't say I did honestly
Kinda like with Luffy cutting his eye in the manga
Its a bit extreme, although it would have been welcome to see in the anime, especially considering how much they've messed up during this arcAlthough you can't make excuses as to why they did not have Luffy covered in blood during the whole war up to this point, which was used to show the amount of damage he was taking
Especially considering during the Enies Lobby arc he was drenched in blood and by then it had been moved into the early morning slot it is in now -

This.
Random Japanese Kid: "One Piece is on! I hope Whitebeard and Luffy kick Akainu's ass for killing Ace!"
Random Japanese Kid: "Yeah! Awesome! Whitebeard hit Akainu with a quake punch!"
Random Japanese Kid: "Akainu's going to attack! Look out, Whitebeard!"
Whitebeard gets half his face ripped off
Random Japanese Kid: "What? That's…ehhh..Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!...M-M-...Mommmmmmmmmmmy!!!!!!"
Mother: What is it, son?''
Random Japanese Kid: "On TV..!!!Whitebeard got half his face ripped off!! I'm scared!!"
Mother:"What?! That's disgusting! You're not watching that show anymore!"End scene.
So it's either censor it or traumatize every child in Japan. -

What about the kids who are reading the manga?
Oh yeah, you're right. I guess it has something to do with it being black and white. And also Whitebeard's half-face in the manga isn't very gory maybe.

Yeah, they can't just have a guy get impaled by a fist made of magma one episode, and then have a guy get half his face burnt off in the next.
Just like how PG-13 movies can only say "fuck" a certain number of times. -
I didn't know every kid in Japan watched OP.
-
It was… a surprisingly nice episode. Especially compared to the last one.
When I saw Buggy on screen I was like: "Get the hell out!" And... he disappeared! I'm so happy. I'm a wizard!
Akainu, that bastard. He's still one of my favourites. When he walked with half of his upper-body missing, that was a good scene. It really gave the feeling that he's a terrifying monster.
Also, was I the only one who got a little teary eyed by the end? I couldn't help it.
Next episode will be awesome. I hope...
Edit:
@WarshipArc:Considering the size and width of his moustache you would think he would lose his balance.
-
No metion of Sabo anywhere.

Just like how PG-13 movies can only say "fuck" a certain number of times. It's a big thing they even showed the hand going all the way through. In Naruto they've made a point of avoiding things going all the way through. When using chidori they usually just show lightning flashes in the front instead of the blooded hand going through like in the manga. Although there are occasions where you do see things going all the way through. It's all to do with leeway.

Maybe you didn't pay attention because he did mention it. Unless you're disappointed no one in the forums is mentioning him. In that case never mind
-
Episode was brilliant up until they had Luffy crying over his dead body, instead of passing out from the shock. It was weird, like he was laughing evilly. Other than that, I bawled.
-

Really? I think I need to re-watch because I did not find his name anywhere
-
Ahh, so the controversy of the :O face returns with the arrival of the anime's adaptation, lol..:P
But yeah, this episode was loads better than the previous episode, that's for sure.
However, I believe it still could've been done a lot better, and certain pieces of music could've been replaced by different tracks that I think would've fitted way more smoothly as well.
All in all, a decent episode. Animation was pretty awesome, too. Hisada never disappoints. ;)
I still think episode 480 was the best episode in this arc by far, though.
-
@joekido:

It was there. I heard Ace mention it too.
-
Talking about Sabo I'm surprised he wasn't in this episode. Knowing Toei I expected at least a silhouette.
-
The episode delivered, but someone needs to make a gif of Luffy's crying scene.
-
good episode but nothing near the epicness of merry's funeral.
-
Really enjoyed this episode. The end shot of Luffy didn't bother me because I thought it was weird in the manga. But I thought the crying helped the seem a little bit, but now a whole lot. But I loved the added scene of WB picking up the bead of Ace's necklace
-
Luffy :Akainu Cauterized Ace Hole While erupting inside him , nanda~ He is a nice Guy After All !!! (Join my Pirate Crew)
No really Toei, How come Having his Organs Burned and no Blood on his Torse…oh Wait Did Luffy wipe it with his hand ?
-
Looks like we're not getting Halfbeard (he actually, gasp, dodges the blow instead).
Fuck them if that's true .
-
Time slot and stuff makes them cut out one of the manliest things in manga, well it is their fail, let's leave it. But they decided to go OOC in that, writing the sinful word "evasion" in vocabulary of a man-who-never-dodged. They could have made Akainu magma punch left side of face, leaving big charred burn instead of what we want. That would've been an "okay" substitution. Everybody can get burn, it's not something extreme. They approve homosexual overtones of Naruto, why not?
At least make his moustache charred! -
Like father like son thank you Ace see ya buddy!
Episode wasnt Gol.D but it was good teared up in the second half.
Now then.
….Who the fuck is Sabo?
ps: the preview.loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool toei.that's all
-
Don't worry guys!!!
We'll eventually see HalfBeard!!!
In One Piece Kai of course!! -
The only part of the episode that disappointed me was Luffy crying. I liked that in the manga more.
-
About the preview…
I don't understand Toei.
They show kids a war, where people die, blood everywhere, there's a big hole in someone's back (with blood), marines cut pirates, pirates cut marines, everybody's shooting at each other... pretty violent. But Whitebeard (who got a hole in his chest+blood) only loses half of his stache. That sucks. And I fail to see the logic in that. I mean, blood everywhere and death but oh no, don't show kids anything like that...
Also, Akainu, he was quite morbid, wasn't he.Please, Toei, don't do this. I already hate you for Doberman's eye, and other things, so please... only thing that saves you is the lack of Buggy in this episode (though I fear this wasn't the end of Buggy-fillers).
-
Come on, anime onlys. Don't hold back. Show us all your anger, all your fury, all your rage. Let it all out.
FEED US WITH YOUR HATRED!I have only watched the anime version of this scene and I didn't shed a tear. It's gotta be because of all those damn spoilers everywhere and anywhere. -_-
But to tell the truth, I only started watching One Piece just to see Ace die. Ha.Ha.Ha.
I did shed a tear whenever I see and sing along with the opening and knowing Ace is going to die and Luffy would be very very sad.
The scene that moved me the most was the part where Garp got all in rage and Sengoku went to stop him. Didn't see that coming and I can feel the emotions between them.
And yay! Sabo got mentioned! Woo hoo! Now I'm going to see his animated face sooner or later.

@Nolus
Well, someone getting stabbed, slashed or peww booomed is ordinary thing for this story. They are still in one piece(ha-ha) and the wound is not specified, it is like -95 hp.Who cares, he is out of battle. But losing half an arm, or an eye or half of brain is gruesome and more defined, little kiddies may play violent games or even(oh my…) read classic manga, but from neutral view of censors, they are still minors and parents may try and act "concerned" for once.
Long story short - you do not know who will watch anime aimed for 3rd graders sunday morning(that is already an adaptation of manga for a little older audience, but if they will not adapt it for sunday morning, they may lose a lot of views, rates and get less profit). Why take the risk? Of course that raises a lot of other "what the fuck"s but that is a different story. -
I'm not a fan of the show at all but I thought the episode was relatively well done. The ending had a good emotional impact and I enjoyed that filler bit in which Kizaru shot Whitebeard.
-
well that was depressing
im going to go hang some puppies to cheer myself up
but seriously props to toei i didn't think it would be as emotional for me the secnod time around
-
I didn't know every kid in Japan watched OP.
AFAIR OP is only outreached by Sazae-san and Maruko-chan in Oricon ratings and permanently the 3rd most watched anime TV series at least after Gegege no Kitaro's end. So yes, they have to make OP more "compatible for families".
And they are already using view shots from a different angle most of the time, so it would be sure that watchers would actually see the wound - and people ("superrealuber fans with THE! sense of TASTE!") would whine about a red flesh wound without seeing any bones or brains or whatever.
-
Man… if anything, I wasn't as sad because of Ace's death. What really got me was Mayumi's absolutely solid performance in this episode.
You didn't disappoint, Toei.
-
:cwy: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace….you were so young...why did yer have to die?
I was so bloody depressed whenn i first read this in the manga......now it brings up those bad memories all over again. :cwy:
So bloody sad at the end.....Whitebeard cryin those manly tears - just like i did towards the end. R.I.P Portgas D AcePreview looks great. WB is really gonna totally pwn Magma brat just as he shoulda done before,. I'm totally gonna gif that.
Halfbeard was obviously never gonna happen...that was way too extreme to be shown on the anime - far too gruesome.
-
The only part of the episode that disappointed me was Luffy crying. I liked that in the manga more.
Yeah, so did I. I honestly didn't know why some people found it awkward, really. When I first looked at that panel in the chapter, it gave me chills, to be honest; like as though something in Luffy just popped and he's lost the will to live or something.
But yeah.
-
Well with this at least the ace hate can finally subside and he can actually rest in peace.
-

Well, we still have the manga so…
But I still don't know why they made two normal eyes for Doberman.
Small complaint, I still enjoy the anime (when it doesn't mess up the whole thing) and I'm pretty sure next episode will be good as well. -

Hahahaha good one.
-
Very emotional episode. I commend Toei for handling it in a tasteful matter.
The filler stuff was tastefulMusic: Flawless Selection
Can't wait for next week and the "Silent Rage"
Also I can't wait for that Jimbei face lol Where Ivankov tells him about get Luffy
-
I appreciated Ace for being Luffy's brother only.As long as he is no uchiha :ninja: + the continuities and discontinuities in his personality are interesting.
I was expecting some sad Merry go type track as he did die happy but the music was emotional nonetheless.
@sea: The Whitebeard nurses are on the mobydick for a reason
