I just read the translated chapter. Very interesting. What could be on Hancock's back? I think it's a symbol she doesn't want anyone to know about. Like, maybe the Gorgon story is fake and there's something else allowing the sisters or, maybe just Hancock, to turn people to stone. Like it could actually just be that Hancock can turn people to stone because of her devil fruit. She may not want people to know she has a devil fruit or she doesn't want people to know she's lying about the monster. If she was found to be liar, she may not be forgiven by the other warriors. Let's hope Oda reveals it next week. Think it could be a symbol that we've seen? Could be WBs symbol, Shanks symbol, Baroque Works symbol, or maybe a paw to represent Kuma. She could've been in Kuma's crew formerly.
Chapter 517 "Bathing" Discussion

Setup chapter for something godly…
And we have corrupt leader... Again...

Can anyone confirm if what Hancock said on the last page was accurate??? In onemanga I mean.
-
I bet Hancock is Luffy's sister or half sister!
No I have no reason…

Actually posting that translation would help. But Aohige_AP explained the last page's translation several times in the spoiler thread already so just search for his last few posts there.

Ok then thnx, I try to avoid the spoiler thread as much as I can so I wouldn't know.

What exactly would you like confirmed?
Aohige_AP said this in the spoiler thread:
[hide]@Aohige_AP:
When she accused Luffy of seeing what's on her back, she said it in present tense, NOT indicating that Luffy saw it in the past. She's upset that he saw it, PERIOD.
To elaborate on the matter:
[If a] villain/antagonist/monster/ghost/whatever's secret [is] being observed,
andhe/she turning around with [an] evil/angry face and saying "mitana…" is a very standard over-used cliche in Japanese literature; from novels to manga. The fate of the observer is usually not very pretty. It's a standard scene where some dire secret of the said antagonist is seen, and that observer must be eliminated. It was originally used a lot in folklore monster/ghost stories in Japan, and later adopted to modern literature.

Edit: I see Elric beat me to it. Took me a while to make this post…

when did people start saying she was with WB's crew.luffy said he never saw that before. Luffy saw Ace's tat when they were in alabasta. I dought WB changed his jolly roger after all that time

And you didn't even post his actual translation. Dude, you're getting old :p
Aohige: You saw, didn't you…!
CarlosNet: !!! // You SAW...
Momodaisuki: You lookedINP Mangaz (the scanlation uploaded on OneManga) used Momodaisuki's translation. For once CarlosNet wasn't the fastest :)

I don't like the Hancock has Whitbeard's symbol theory, I really don't think it is possible, and even if it was I would not like such a twist in the story. The truth is that we don't know everything Luffy does, probably don't even know close to the amount of things he's seen. So making wild guesses won't do much, even if it fun to do.
I have a bad feeling, a real bad feeling, Oda will screw us over next chapter, I know it. May it be him showing where the other strawhats landed, or showing something else, I have a feeling this cliffhanger will last longer than expected. D:
-
MY THEORY IS: that Boa Hancock and her sisters have a Whitebeard tatoo on their backs just like Ace does. Maybe on one of their voyages away from the island they ran into the whitebeard pirates and lost to them, ended up joining their crew, etc etc.
Etc etc? Like a davy back fight? Considering the caring attitude the Whitebread shows towards his nakama (lol) it would seem odd to me if he forced people to join.
-
Whitebeard crew doesn't seem like it's short to many members…
-
what we can be sure of is that the gorgon story is fake, and she is hiding something in her back (a tattoo who knows) or about her back and she turns anyone who see it into stone with her devil fruit pretending its the curse of the eyes.
what came in my mind and its just because how luffy said it "hmm? hey, your back. i've seen that before" is that hancock is a mermaid and when she get into water her legs transform, i may be wrong but its just a possibility -
ok how is that ; boa will bring luffy back to shaboni islands, under the condition that he won't reveal her secret
( that there is no curse opon her, and she just got a freakin' DF or her
snake/sister whatever )sorry if this idea has been posted before, i did not wanna read all the pages b4
-
i saw WB's tatoo theory in a thread about Hancock's back but it's locked atm so I'll discuss it here:
do we know that every one of the WB pirates has a tatoo on the back?… imo Ace had one because he wanted to - he was proud of it because it showed his determination to stay by WB's side and make him Pirate King and such loyal stuff...I tend to beleive the gorgon's story is true so regarding Luffy's reaction - I bet he recognised the eyes on Hancock's back; it might sound like a dumb prediction but imo he recognised Kureha's eyes there
-
And you didn't even post his actual translation.
I wasn't intending to though. He asked to have the translation confirmed, not to have a translation. And since he didn't specify what he wanted confirmed exactly, I suggested he look at what Aohige_AP had to say about the last page. I took the extra time making the quotes linked to the spoiler thread (since you can't quote closed topics) in case he wanted to read more about it. (Like the actual translation for instance).

Hahaha! Please, tell me I wasn't the only one who thought of The Emperor's New Groove when Hancock threw her grandma out the window!
-
i never would have thought of that….lol
luffy got to see "Back" lucky little bastard
i hate how the manga always end in cliffhangers oh well
I want to know what happened to the rest of the strawhats -
@RPG:

Well TECHNICALLY….

To all the people saying the Eyes are fake and that she wants to cover up for some devil fruit power or such she has:
- It's not really likely, if you examine the chapter closely. Do not forget they said the THREE sisters had the power. If only Hancock used it against every crew they fought, dont you think they would find it strange? She doesnt even seems to matter about these things anyway, while on her ship. You can notice by how reluctant she was to go out of her room to meet the Vice-Admiral.
Therefore, there must be some truth on the eyes OR the ability to turn in stone other people, otherwise it'd be simply weird to have "Three Sisters" possessing the same powers. No devil fruit can do such.
Now, it may be some sort of symbol, sure - however, my point is that the THREE sisters have the power to turn people to stone, not only her. So let's try to think up ideas that work with this point.

Truthfully we don't know that yet. Hancock yes, but we don't know about the other two yet.

Well all three sisters having the ability is not proven. Yeah they said it, but it could still be a lie. Handcock could be responsible for doing all the "Stoning" and act like it's all three of them. The question there would be why say it's all three of them, having them fear you is enough, why you sister too? Also I wonder if anyone noticed that the Kuja imagined the three sisters bathing together, putting their back to one direction. But only Handcock was bathing, and the other two stood by the door, as if they were guarding it….maybe it's nothing.

DELTA ATTACK!
I'm sorry, that really was an uncalled for FFIV reference…
Anyway,
What is Kikyo going to do now? Yeah, they've tracked down Luffy, but he's in the bath with Hancock. They can't rush in, since I'm sure Sandersonia and Marigold will forbid that to keep their little secret. But, if Luffy makes a ruckus (which he's sure to do one way or another) it lets the cat out of the bag just as effectively.

I agree but ppl are just gonna say that the sisters having the same turn a person in to stone power is a lie, just like the story. I'm hoping next chap one of them shows that they can do the power next chap to shut those ppl up and then we can move on to better theories than everything is a lie and Hancock is hiding something on her back.
I mean seriously what could it be that would put her in jeopardy? Hopefully Luffy finds out the hard way if he starts to turn to stone or if there is some other explanation.
Oh and if she is hiding something she could just turn him in to stone but then I guess some other exception will arise for Luffy.

if they made up the story about the gorgon wouldn't they have to include all three sisters? this whole story sounds fishy. i think those 3 sisters said they were going out to fight the gorgon but instead went out to sea and learned pirating that way. they probably returned home and then made their own pirate crew with the women on the island. that's why i think the prediction of her having some pirate tattoo on her back is plausible. maybe all 3 sisters have that tattoo so that's why they made up that story? hancock probably got her devil fruit that time they went out to sea for the first time.
-
Wow this chapter really shows how Boa is a brat and uses her "cute" and "adorable" looks to get over on BOTH male and females. Even Nyon for a temporary moment was caught in her trap but quickly realized it was farce and deceptive.
I love how the crystal ball said "Get Goin'" LMAO!
Now many people believe it's eyes, others believe its a symbol and etc…
When the story of the Gorgon sisters was being explained to the little girl, it contained many "scenes" of the story in the background. One scene showed the back of the 3 sisters, and for some reason I don't believe the scene is of a REAL IMAGE of their backs, just something that's being imagined by the information explained.
I could be wrong though.
I am hoping that it is NOT eyes and they do NOT turn you into stone. Otherwise it would seem that Luffy is unaffected because he is "Rubber" (That's the only reason I can see being thrown out there as to why he does not turn into stone while looking at the "eyes"), and if that is the case then I will be dissapointed... we already had the Luffy immune to "x" (Enel's Power) because he is Rubber...that would be reaaalllyyy cheap.
-
@Pirate_King_Sage:
I am hoping that it is NOT eyes and they do NOT turn you into stone.
Would also be somewhat surprising if Luffy had seen Gorgon eyes before. Not to mention his reaction upon encountering them on someone's back surely wouldn't be "hey, I've seen that before".
-
I have a couple theories about Hancock's back.
1. Colors trap courtesy of Miss Goldenweek. Don't know what would mean though.
2. a charm that gives Hancock her "charm" powers. But if it is seen, they won't work. So Luffy won't fall for her puppy dog act.
And I'm only guessing one because Luffy recognized the thing on her back.
-
I think maybe there are eyes on her back but they're just tatoos and the real power comes from the DF. Luffy will find this out and Hancock will have to give Luffy a ship as long as he doesn't say anything about her secret. Or Oda could leave us hanging and switch to another SH. That would suck. Still, Oda sure knows how to leave us wanting more.
-
Good chapter, I like Boa throwing Nyon out the window(Emperor's New Groove) and Boa Fanservice at the end of the chapter, I don't think that Boa is Luffy's Mother
-
Hancock definitely doesn't strike me as one to let him go in exchange for silence. She's going to be sporting a massive butthurt insert double entendre here after Luffy comes crashing through her roof and into her bath. She'll probably turn him to stone and try to outright kill him later.
I don't know how things are going to work in the long run though. I don't really see how Luffy can break her control over the island, with almost all of the Amazons completely devoted to her despite her immense ego. Nyon could be a potential ally, and probably also the Marguerite/Sweetpea/Aphelandra trio.

I don't think she'll successfully turn Luffy to stone but she could try to kill Luffy. And I REALLY wanna see Luffy beat Hancock up. First she kicks a kitten and now she throws an old lady out a window. She's gone too far. Hopefully he's strong enough to beat her.

Gosh, why is everyone saying Whitebeard's pirate tattoo on Boa's back?
I mean, seriously,if it was,why the heck did Boa won't allow any of her kinswomen to see it?(do they even know anything about the Whitebeard's pirate?)Is Whitebeard really that epic?
Why not Gol D. Roger's jolly roger?(make more sense eh?)Boa look like in her late 30's/early 40's anyway. My guess?
Her back is enscript with Poneglyphs symbols**.** Logic enough? -
I'm thinking the tattoo has something to do with Lola and her mom.
-
I guess now we will get to see what her powers are good for
with soru there's no way Luffy's gonna get hit, specially since he has beams in such high regard as weapons.

Well, it's something that Luffy remembers seeing. I don't think he's ever taken a good look at a Poneglyph and I don't know if he's ever seen the jolly roger of the Pirate King. He has seen Whitebeard's jolly roger though since he met up with Ace in Alabasta and Ace has the jolly roger on his back.

I have a couple theories about Hancock's back.
1. Colors trap courtesy of Miss Goldenweek. Don't know what would mean though.
Are you implying that Hancock is Goldenweek's mother?
…
Nah.
Hey... wait a sec, I had an idea...
Wings! She has the Shandian-style wings on her back.
Actually, I'm gonna go with the pattern that's on Dragon's face.
-
It could be the pirate era symbol?
-
Hmm has anyone made the theory yet that Nyon is Luffy's grandmother? Cause if not I got dibs on it.
Really for no other reason than that she left for an unknown amount of time when she was still young.Well, whatever is on her back is really embarassing her. With her personality it's go to be something she percieves as ugly. Some birth defect only she and her sisters know about, a mark of some secret shame. A defeat she kept hidden for example.
If one adds her irrational behaviour on the fighting Whitebeard issue and Luffy recognizing whatever is on her back to that I could imagine that a couple of years ago she met Ace or Whitebeard and got defeated or saved by one of them and whoever it was put some sort of marking, either some symbol related to Ace or Whitebeards tatoo, on her for some reason.
Of course that embarasses her no end and thus her pride prevents her from joining the fight against Whitebeard. The advantage of something like that is Luffy would have a rather easy time of hitching a ride to Shabaody.
EDIT:I even found something which it could be:
http://b.imagehost.org/0582/acesymbol.jpg
that thing on the cords of Ace's hat looks suspiciously like the thing Hancock's snake is wearing on its head.Coincidence? Subliminal message? I wonder if that small detail has anything to do with why Luffy notices Hancock's markings. Oda would pull something like that.
-
@Ghostville:
Coincidence? Subliminal message?
Hmm, that's gotten me thinking. Nyon actually could be Luffy's grandmother. I mean, it was stated that she left the island years ago. During that time she could've met Garp and gave birth to Dragon. Or she could be Luffy's mom's mom. I wouldn't mind it. And the hat chords looking like the hat on the snake could be coincidental. Or it may have some kind of meaning that Oda will explain to us someday.
-
I think this chapter gave us a lot…info and politics in the island, Hancock's personality, and a little fan service not bad for a chapter. I am one of the people who support the Gorgon curse is a lie theory. Luffy saw her back and he didn't turn into stone and I seriously doubt that Luffy saw someone with eyes on their backs before unless those kinds of curses are not that uncommon.
Oh and what's with the obsession about finding a family member of Luffy on Amazon Island.
-

Actually, I'm gonna go with the pattern that's on Dragon's face.
When did Luffy ever see Dragon's face?
I'd speculate more but after the whole Duval reveal I'm not even going to try.
-
the wb symbol is a good possibility, because she might be the one who replaces tatch(former 4th division captain of wb crew). I don't like this idea though.
-
I am kinda disappointed in this chapter, mainly because it feels like Oda's starting to repeat himself in some aspects, and I hate to see such a gifted writer do that. But, he is only human.
In case you're wondering what it is he's repeating…

Bad person destroys something children worked hard on (Morgan arc)

-
Luffy sees something he recognizes at the end of the chapter that leaves us guessing (Duval arc)
-
Island ruled by evil pirates who live in a tall Japanese-style building (Arlong arc)
I hope he can turn some of this around. I can't fault him too much, since no one's perfect, and he's been doing this so long, but still... It's not great...

I would so like it that the secret is that they never really killed the Gorgon, and it came back for… DESTRUCTION!!!
Chapter 521: Pirate Empress Boa Hancock and Sober Superhero Hancock vs. Giant Creature Gorgan

I like the gorgon lie idea. But I also like the hancock=luffy's mom idea. I think the eyes are probably a tattoo.

Luffy sees something he recognizes at the end of the chapter that leaves us guessing (Duval arc)

Island ruled by evil pirates who live in a tall Japanese-style building (Arlong arc)
I disagree on those :
-
Elderly former ruler smacked around by evil current ruler (Skypiea arc)
She was not the ruler when Hancock became empress , and in fact , she left her people for her own safety . -
Luffy sees something he recognizes at the end of the chapter that leaves us guessing (Duval arc)
EVERY history , that comes weekly , monthly , etc , needs to do that on the end of the chapter so the sales of the next chapter increases :D -
Island ruled by evil pirates who live in a tall Japanese-style building (Arlong arc)
They're not evil . And while Arlong came and made him the ruler of those towns , we don't see nobody living there except them.
______ By the way :
I don't think it's those tatoos that are on Dragon's face because Luffy has never seen them . I think it has something to do with the New Era , those smileys :D .
-
-
It's probably something we don't know of but Luffy certainly does.
