I saw Zootopia on Monday. My thoughts are pretty much the same as everyone else here, but I thought I'd put in my two cents.
! It was a pretty solid movie; lots of creative choices with the setting and how the different species got around the city. The minute I found out the movie was going to center around Judy and her having to overcome discrimination for being a rabbit, I pretty much knew what direction the plot would go, and even made a mental list of the cop movie cliches. But, because Judy's so damn optimistic and energetic, it's easy to look passed them. It's kinda like how even though The Force Awakens was pretty much a rehash of A New Hope, the characters were so well-written that it hardly even mattered.
! The real heart of the movie came from the friendship that Nick and Judy formed. Again, they went through a lot of the same motions as most characters in buddy comedies; they're polar opposites and hate each other at first, and spend the majority of the first act throwing insults back and forth. But once they get to know each other they start to warm up. And then, there's the big misunderstanding in the third act that leads to them falling out. Somehow, I knew that was coming. But, since I was so invested in both characters, I didn't really mind. The fact that Judy had gone so far to overcome her mistrust of foxes, only to say the wrong thing in front of Nick during the press conference was the saddest Disney moments I've seen in a long time.
! And yeah, the climax was a little rushed. I'm not sure how to feel about the Night Howlers causing the animals to go feral or the reveal of Bellweather being the one behind them, but I wasn't really expecting it at all. She was a bit of a weak villain, since she the reveal didn't have a lot of payoff. But again, she's not really supposed to be the movie's greatest strength.
Now, following others in the thread; my ranking of the 3D Disney movies from this decade so far:
1. Zootopia
2. Wreck-It Ralph
3. Tangled
4. Frozen
Though it's at the bottom, I still like Frozen. Big Hero 6 doesn't look like something I'd really enjoy, so I'll give it a pass for now.
