I like how Usopp's arc costume this time round is going to be somewhat Reggae-ish. Now he just needs the dreads to be complete!
Chapter 491 "Flying Fish Riders" Discussion
-
-
Thanks a bunch, Battle Franky.
The chapter was pretty much all I expected it to be like. And it was good.
Next week should be great. I might not even read the spoilers.
-
The biggest twist would be if "the man that ruined" Dupal isn't one of the strawhats. But Dupal need the strawhats either as allies to defeat him or as bait for the one that did.
Well he said that the man that ruined his life is on the ship, so doubtful.
@_Meh_:
Oh snap! Did you see the necklace that flying fishrider was wearing?! Compare it to the shadow in the Florian Triangle, it's the same thing!
Comparing what we could see of the "thing", they look exactly simliar. I wonder whether that's a coincide or Duval is tied to it somehow. The captions seemed to imply that the creature has been there for sometime (or other things like it at least.)
-
When was Kuro last seen with his crew? I recall nothing of the sort.
CodedTech: Depends on what translation you read. The one I read was that he just waited for the ship and in the next sentence that he would kill the man that ruined him.
At the Riders headquarter
Dupal: Hey, Macro gang…
Macro: Yessir, what do you need Mr Dupal?
Dupal: The mermaid you called, seems to be on a pirate ship right now...
Macro: What!? Pirates!!? Camie is on a pirate ship!?Dupal shatters the glass in his hand
Macro: Whoa!
Dupal: I've been waiting for so long…
This pirate ship is the one I've been waiting for…!!
I'm gonna kill him….! The man who ruined my life.
End(It doesn't even say that the man that ruined him is on the ship in the bikinitopia translation. It's just implied.)
-
I thought it was during the chap where Luffy gets his first bounty. He's just sitting around in some cabin and DUN DUN readjusts his glasses while counting roof panels.
-
He is a former pirate, from Shank's crew, who wanted to eat Luffy's devil fruit.
-

Anime only. The manga only has Kuro last seen being taken away by the remains of the Black Cats.
Somehow someone from Krieg's crew makes the most sense to me for this guy (the armor motif tells me that), but I could also see someone like Morgan or just someone completely new.
-
Of all the people that should want to kill one of the SHs, I'm thinking Bellamy. A dude that annoying just never stays dead.
I highly doubt it's Kuro. He was whomped, but his dream of quitting piracy is still possible
Buggy is Buggy. He wouldnt conceal his identity
It could be Morrigan. He's batshit.
Don Krieg. Yeah, could be him, very likely.I doubt it's any CP9. But god…. Isitcanbecp9coverstoryplz?
-
we can rule out bellamy and anyone from his pirate crew since they did not believe in pirates dreams.
-
Thanks for the download.
-
i actually really think its bellamy, the best psycho character to fit there.
or else, its a minor character who was hit as a side effect by one of the strawhats in one of their adventures…
-
I'm hoping that a: it's not even a major villain, just one of their lackeys or b: it's some background character (possibly mentioned in an SBS). I like the idea of Oda just giving people who pay close attention little easter eggs like that.
-
Thx BF!
Hum, why is everyone making list of villains we have already see? Me thinks that it's some man that was deafeated or humiliated or something in the past of one of the strawhats. My bet goes to Sanji, cuz we have seen a little of his past, but not enough.A new character plus new informations on any of the crew members. I wish that.
-
I've had a couple of thoughts about this chapter.
First of all, I think Hatchi is going to aid the Strawhats this arc.
Secondly, Isn't it a bit cannibalistic for an octopus man to sell takoyoki?
Finally, I can't wait to see how the 5 East Blue members of the crew react when the meet Hatchi again.
(edit: my first thought was that Duval is Kuro. But Morgan an Kreig are also likely canidates. I thinking it's Morgan, as he cameoed in 2 side stories.) -
Well, let's try process of elimination:
1. Dupal can't be a fishman: His hand isn't webbed. So that means it can't be Arlong or any of his crew.
2. Dupal can't be any very large, musclebound character or anyone with distinct hands: His hand is of normal size/proportions, so that rules out Krieg, Wapol, Morgan, Pearl, Kuro and Mr. 1 who had meaty or long fingered hands. It also rules out Buggy, Foxy, and the nyaban brothers who had gloved/veiny/clawed hands.
3. Dupal likely isn't anyone the Strawhats met recently. Sure his flying fish crew is new to the area, but it still takes some time to gather people behind you and set up shop. I would argue that this rules out anyone met after Skypiea.
So what's left? Dupal is a male character of average build that one of the Strawhats wronged some time between leaving Usopp's village and traveling back from skypiea. Also, it may just be shading, but Dupal's hand seems of a slightly dark complexion.
Good options:
-Gin: Fits all the criteria, may have developed a grudge against Sanji for some reason after leaving the restaurant. Gin was a badass on par with Sanji, so he would certainly be strong enough to gather a crew around him.
-Shura: The skypiean priest that rode the giant bird. His mode of attack sure was similar to that of the flying fish riders and he may have developed a grudge against Luffy for defeating Enel, even though it was Wiper who had defeated him.
-Ohm: The Skypiean priest with the extendable sword. Zoro beat him and who knows, he could still have a grudge against the guy who got him thrown down from the white white sea.
-Bellamy: In my opinion, this is the best option. Bellamy was and up and coming Pirate until being taken down so handily by Luffy. The mask can be explained by Doflamingo merely scarring up his face with Sarquiss' sword. The leather jacket and stylish shades of the Flying Fish rider certainly match with the stylish hangers on that Bellamy collected before Jaya.
If anyone should hold a grudge against Luffy, it'd be Bellamy. Also, his spring fruit had sooo much untapped potential that it'd make a lot of sense for Oda to bring Bellamy back with newly developed gear-like powers. I suppose Sarquiss would be a valid option as well, but he seems less likely than Bellamy thematically and wore weird striped gloves.
-Other than these four, there really aren't any good options among known characters for Dupal's hidden identity. The other possibility is that Dupal is a new character from the past life of one of the strawhats. Zoro certainly wronged enough people back in the day and considering how well versed the Riders were on the Thousand Sunny, an old rival of Franky or someone who's life was hurt by his Battle Franky's are valid options as well.
Thanks BF and binktopia for the scan by the way.
-
HOLY SHIT LOL.
Thanks BF…
The First Two Pages
LOL
-
Aw, I was so certain Nami completely ditched those high-heeled sandals. Oh well, the chapter was great anyway.
-
Completely awesome chapter. I'm glad that in the end of this arc, they will get the way to Fishman Island. That's pretty cool. Also, I've gotta say, the Flying Fish Riders have awesome designs. I'm looking forward too seeing Hachan and Duval too…
Once again, one of the better chapters in a while.
-
What a way to kick things off!
-
I doubt it's any CP9. But god…. Isitcanbecp9coverstoryplz?
Unless its T-Bone or someone else on EL not in CP9, I think its close to certain now.
-
I'm completely confused with the first page. What is is? A new arc?
As for the mystery guy I think Oda wants us to think this is Krieg (because of the armour). But on his helmet there is a row of little crosses which remind me of the good captain T-Bone. Then again I wouldn't want to think of him as a villain. So…yes, Oda, you win again.
I'm looking forward to how Oda is going to deal with rescuing a bastard who destroyed Nami's hometown. Somehow I doubt that she will forgive him.
-
I sort of want Dupal to be someone we know already… not someone else that was indirectly affected by Luffy or another Strawhat offscreen.
I also liked the fish pointing the way, and I lol'd at Brook asking Camie for money.
EDIT : Hachi didn't really do anything bad to Nami, did he? I mean it seemed like it was mostly Arlong and Nezumi, and a little bit of Kuroobi.
-

What? How can you tell that when we've just seen a close-up of his hand? It's probably just a proportion thing, from the shot of the guys upper body he is huge. So…I wouldn't rule those guys out.
Oh yeah, great chapter, and thanks.
-
Duval only thinks that the man who wronged him is in the strawhats because of sanji's bounty poster, the real curly eyed freak like that is around somewhere
-
We interrupt the endless speculation about who Duval is to bring you this completely left-field but still-on-topic factoid:
Rasta starfish Pappag designed the shirt that Zoro wore in the "Relax" color-spread.
He also designed Luffy's inner-tube in an earlier color-spread.How cool is that?
Props to SaiyaJedi for making the connection between the two, too.
Ok, back to the endless speculation …
EDIT: Props also to BF and Binktopia for delivering a full scanlation on a friday!
-

Good theory.Maybe it is like that.We don't know what Oda will write next, after all, right?
-
Great chapter, but waay to many assumptions being thrown about, though, saying that the most likely candidate as mentioned before would be Belllamy. Yet we've only seen two bloody panels of this guy(Dupal)…
-
Wasn't Bellamy killed by Doflamingo, along with Sarquiss? He made them stab one another if I recall.
I'm gonna guess it's Morgan; since he didn't name Luffy specifically, and Morgan blames Zoro for his downfall more than Luffy. Luffy was a nobody to him. Also, the iron mask could be a good way to hide his broken jaw, and we haven't seen both of his hands. So it makes sense.
Kreig's a possibility, but I'm gonna go with Morgan as most likely. We KNOW he's loose in the Grandline and bearing a serious grudge against Zoro and Luffy, and what with the wanted posters and news about the Strawhats floating around, he'd know more about them now than the last time they clashed. Oda is always one for dropping hints, and he's been leading up to a second Morgan meeting for awhile.
-
Sarquiss was definetly not killed and we don't know if Bellamy survived that or not. If Pell can survive a bomb at close proximity Bellamy could probably survive a shallow stab/slash.
-
Well, the guy is thin built and has a left hand at least… Wears a helmet and a open shirt...
Arlong it ain't, there is no way his nose would fit in that helmet. I see no fins or scales, so the guy is human (wow, fishmen working for a human???).
-
so fucking hilarious and still serious and dramatic
-
after taking a closer look at that very human hand of his, i think i have to say it can't be arlong (which is a shame because his broken nose was a good excuse to wear a big mask and an excuse to kidnap hachi). it's definitely not wapol, he's happy as CEO of his toy/steel industry. could be morgan, we haven't seen his other hand yet. anyone else would be kind of a lucky shot in the dark. duval looks like a big guy to me, though… and who would wear a leather jacket and some fluffy boa type thing?
i'm betting it's someone new, and the introduction of the character will provide some more insight into the past of one of the strawhats.
-
I'm down to two I'd put money on… Morgan or Bellamy (if his alive).
-
the best part of this chapter was zoro forgetting about kokoro.
LOL
-
On the 2nd to last page in the close-up of the flying fish riders, the one in the front looks to be wearing a Baroque Works belt buckle. Could Davul be a former unknowable, who life was derail with the down fall of the Baroque Works.
On the side note I really how it's Buggy the Clown
-
It's disgusting that people are actually saying Duval could be T-Bone
-
the first thing that came to my mind was Morgan, but this could be another situation like in Absolam's case where he ruined Sanji's dream just by eating the fruit he wanted.
One of the Strawhats could have unknowingly ruined this Duval dude's life without even trying or knowing who he is
-
For some reason this chapter reminded me of a parody of Bobobo :getlost:
I dunno, I just feel like this is a decent anime filler arc right now. I hate the idea that Hachi is in the story again and all. I mean, if Zoro hadn't cut him up, he would have hurt Sanji bad and Luffy wouldn't have been freed. Its not like he was a sorta bad villain. He was pretty bad, just stupid.
But, its too early too tell, so…
-

Nah, it looks like it's a fish with wings.
Anyway, it might be Morgan. He's the only one of that size that Luffy's ruined the life of. I've heard some people say it's Krieg, but I don't really think that Luffy ruined Krieg's life.
It could be someone that had a grudge against Shanks, at least from when he still wore his straw hat.
-

For some reason Pappag gave me a Bo-bobo-esque vibe but that's all I found.
-
It will be kinda interesting to see Morgan fighting with a devil fruit. After all, he surely got a lot more powerful if he managed to reach that part of the Grand Line.
And think about it…
It's impossible that Crocodile managed to escape from Impel Down, so the only other person with an unique hand that could give away his identity is Morgan.
-
If you want to make case that Davul is Morgan - It kind makes sense, and at the same time it does not make sense.
For :
Had lost his position in Marines - life ruined because Luffy and Zorro.
Morgan had the map to Grand Line, he could have come from Marine HQ, so he would know how to get around Grand Line to get there faster.
Looses his temper like Morgan.
From short stories we know Morgan is on the loose.
So far we have not see his face and only one arm.Against
Why would Morgan choose to hide identity by wearing a mask, and picking a using a different name? Hiding from marines ?
He can hide his face but not his right AXE hand, how could people and Marines that are looking for him be fooled by a helmet and different name.
If its Morgan, how did he get so strong, to dominate that area ? I mean Luffy and Zorro took him down as if it was noting back then. -
It does sort of look like the Baroque Works sign… except
1. Most of Baroque works is in Impel Down or at a cafe, working the job of their dreams
2. It has lips. -
I've heard some people say it's Krieg, but I don't really think that Luffy ruined Krieg's life.
Ofc it's Luffy that ruined Kreigs life.
Kreig didn't even battle Mihawk. He just lost his fleet to him.
It was Luffy that was the first one to actually beat Kreig and prevent his acquisition of a new ship to rebuild his fleet.
-
I'll just wait for the next chapter
It's not like Duval's actually the focus of attention at the moment. If anything, I didn't expect the riders to be badass looking humans nor Paggo to be actually a designer of some important brand of clothes.
-
So, does this mean CP9 is dead?
-
Ofc it's Luffy that ruined Kreigs life.

Completely agree…
If people don't believe me... this page completely fits this... He was always intent that he was the strongest guy in the world, with no successor... and that he had never lost a battle...
Look what Luffy turned him into.
-
nah
knowing Oda, he surely didn't show up Blueno after his defeat at the hands of Luffy to avoid the problem of fans bitching after he reveals something like Blueno being the one who saved CP9 from a sure death in the middle of the Buster Call bombing.

Against
Why would Morgan choose to hide identity by wearing a mask, and picking a using a different name? Hiding from marines? He´s a wanted criminal AND an ex-Marine. There´s pretty much no side to run to that is not against him. Better hiding the identity that way.
He can hide his face but not his right AXE hand, how could people and Marines that are looking for him be fooled by a helmet and different name.
Of course the ax arm remains but perhaps it´s nothing unique in this world. Think for instance of Crocodile. He was the only one we saw with a hook on his hand but still I wouldn´t rule the possibility out that there´s more pirates with hooks out there. And Crocodile wasn´t famous for his hook but for his persona. To bring it back to Morgan, in the end hiding the face would be more important then hiding the axe.
If its Morgan, how did he get so strong, to dominate that area ? I mean Luffy and Zorro took him down as if it was noting back then.
That´s actually the main problem I have with Morgan. He simply is far to weak to put himself in a position to control people that defeat Hachi. True, with training you can grow but in the Shonen world you need to have the proper spirit to do so which Morgan with what we know of him so far pretty much lacks. However, this is nothing that two or three flashback pages couldn´t cover.

There's something else…
They probably sailed to the grand line, and chances are Gin died from the poison... he was his right hand man. Then the crew probably mutinied or something...
