Chapter 1092 is officially out!
Chapter 1092: Kuma the Tyrant's Holy Land Rampage
-
-
-
-
Kuma's scene happens during the previous day. The borders are also light-grey, indicating this is a not-far-ago flashback. This is important because Kuma's ability can take days to reach its destination. It took Luffy one day to reach Amazon Lily from Sabaody.
-
The chapter constantly reminds us that Kuma's destination was not Mary Geoise. This confirms the thought that Kuma can't send people beyond the Red Line, that's why he had to climb it all the way up. Where's he's headed? Egghead is the most likely answer.
-
Kuma lost a leg and part of his head. That's brutal. Imagine in what sorry state he will be when he finally reunites with Bonney...
-
I do like how the official did Sakazuki's monologue. The unofficials made it look like he and Kuma had history together. Here, it sounds way more impersonal. I also like the detail that he does his job because he believes in his own justice. He sees himself as a hero, not a goon
-
I like that Kizaru is taking this seriously. Almost every opponent Luffy had until now made mistakes because they underestimated Luffy. Kizaru, on the other hand, is gauging Luffy's strength and acting strategically. That makes him twice as dangerous.
-
With a single attack, Kizaru foils the crew's escape plan and sends Luffy accross the Frontier Dome's limits. Luffy not only took damage from the kick, but the barrier's lasers as well. Precise strategy. And this is what the arc really needed: with the escape plan foiled, we can't leave the island anymore!
-
And Bonney is out too! Outstanding! Now there's another complication for escaping, unless the Straw Hats decide to leave Bonney behind. This is certainly leading to Bonney's reunion with Kuma, but I think it will take a while before we reach that. Also, I have a suspicion...
-
It may sound crazy, but I think Sanji "saved" Bonney. As in, he sensed she was in danger, arrived just in time to catch her in the air, but both were sent beyond the Dome's limits. Sanji embraced and let himself be hit by the lasers. This may be why he's not with Nami later.
-
Franky, why are you using a laser to hit a laser-man? People love when Luffy or Franky aren't intimidated by way stronger foes and challenge them anyway. But when Lucci does it, he doesn't get the same respect. I like Lucci in this arc. He's outgunned but still striving.
-
Don't underestimate Kizaru. The thing is: Kizaru is unhurt, and has not shown any of his cards. Meanwhile Luffy has pulled his ultimate card and has already got zapped by the barrier twice. Gear 5 is masking Luffy's wounds, as last time it allowed him to fight while half-dead.
-
The big twist is that Gear 5 has caused a reaction in the Iron Giant. Why didn't it happen when Luffy was fighting Lucci? Well, maybe it did, we just hadn't seen it. I don't think the robot is awakening yet. It's just a reaction. It's setting up his awakening for later.
-
This chapter gave us a lot of momentum and upped the tension wonderfully. The story is gaining speed, and like Kizaru says, "Acceleration is power!". It seems this arc still has a lot to tell and we are not near its end, after all.
-
-
First time consecutive chapters in exactly 2 months, if we get 3 it'd be the first time in 4 months. So that's good to see. Exciting chapter as well, the Revolutionary Army's blockade seems to be working fine. Akainu's power in action after so long was good to see, Hell Hound is the attack he used to take parts of Whitebeards face, so seems like he was serious here. Suppose if anyone can fix/heal Kuma they are currently on Egghead, but he's not in great shape. Hopefully we get his flashback soon now.
Guessing Bonney and Kizaru met when she was on Egghead as a kid? Anyway, I love how everyone knows everybody, has history with one another etc. It's probably more or less gonna be this way till the end of the series. We've come a long way and it shows!
Edit: Forgot to mention the flashback of Akainu and Bonney which seems to be an immediate continuation to their scene in ch 595, back then it ends with Bonney saying 'you'll pay for this' (or 'I'll never forgive you' in another translation). Akainu responding to this with 'Bark all you like' seems quite fitting. So that was neat.
-
Yesterday's anime episode reminded me what a shame haki is... If it wasn't for haki needing to be at the forefront, Kaido's defeat could have actually been cool and unique! Like imagine Luffy had actually used the power of the sun or something like that to defeat Kaido... But no. Haki had to take the forefront.
Anyways, all of that to say, i see a lot of potential for gear 5's interaction with light... I hope haki stays out of it.
-
Kuma sends people anywhere he wants no matter the distance but somehow he can't use it to go upward ? that's bullshit
he could've touched to go up then touch again to pass the red line without any drama
and then we got Akainu, Oda squared them off as if they're about to fight and then we got no fight
Kizaru's rocket kick was the best thing in this chapter, so lovely i wish to write a poem about it.
lore piece coming next week.
-
The fact that Kuma was presented this way and seemed to give confidence to Bonney makes me wonder if her own world is going to break around her soon. Hmm
-
@hideoushorrendous well, what if Kuma's power is to repel things horizontally? DF are just people's dreams, they can be weird like that.
-
didn't Kuma send nami to a sky island?

You're right, sending Nami to a sky island would require going up after all.
-
I’m confused as to why the robot didn’t activate the first time Luffy went Gear 5
Mistake by Oda? Or is there good reasoning

Well, there must be a logic to it.
I think Kuma can decide where he wants the target to land, but the trajectory is the most direct possible, with only a small rise at the start and a descent at the end.
For him to send someone across the Red Line, he and the target must be pretty high to begin with. As such, he had to climb up the Red Line in order to continue his journey.
As to why he didn't push himself as soon as he reached the top... well, we need drama.

There's probably a more or less straight line without obstacles between Sabaody and Weatheria.

I think the robot is not awakening yet, it just reacted to the "drums". Like, his eyes flared, but he has no energy or command to do anything beyond that. Maybe that's why the last time Luffy used Gear 5 nothing happened: maybe the eyes did flare but it went right back to slumber.
-
Things really feel like they're getting back in gear this week, proving that the last chapter's burst of energy wasn't just a one-off. And no more break either, to keep the momentum going.
While it's not the Egghead material I think many were hoping for, the opening Marie Geoise flashback does show a willingness to return to events parallel to the cutaway sequence in their own random breakaways from the current story. I would guess we need to see this now to be ready for Kuma to burst back into the main story in a few weeks. But why? What is he doing and what is his mission? One theory states that his push can't send things past the Redline so he had to climb it himself to get to the other side, but that doesn't explain his choice to attack the Celestial Dragons. If it was just getting over he'd have blipped away as soon as he reached the top. Some say the programming of the giant robot in Egghead has been put in his body and it's repeating its attack from 200 years ago, but then why give up so quickly, even in the face of Sakazuki? I'd have wanted to see more struggle between the real Kuma and the robot to foreshadow him wrestling control from it. The prediction I've liked most is that he came looking for Bonney in her last known location and has bailed after getting enough of a look around to know she's not there. I don't think he would have a way to track her specifically, but he's almost definitely coming to Egghead now, if only just to get repaired before continuing his search.
All I know is that the repeated emphasis on there being no will or mind left inside him makes it all the more certain he's clung onto himself somehow.
And back at Egghead, in the present, Luffy vs Borsalino is on. I enjoy that Luffy's lower gears still get to come out despite the marketing dominance of Gear Five following its reveal. And it's a strong showing for Borsalino as well - if Snakeman's speed and unpredictability was revealed as a counter to the literal future sight specialist, it backs up the admiral's lightspeed claims to be able to keep up with it so effectively. The ability to hit and run from such an enormous range really shows how annoying Borsalino's fruit can be when he gets serious.
While Borsalino's expression doesn't change much as all this goes down, the memory of Vegapunk's pride in Vegaforce 01 speaks to something going on under the surface. I think it's a shame to see Vegaforce go as well, but I guess we can't have him overshadowing the arc's other big robot.
Gotta appreciate Bonney and Franky's willingness to throw down with an admiral the way they do. Franky especially for boldly choosing to fight lasers with lasers. We get a little more on Bonney's change of heart as well, that her anger with Vegapunk isn't gone, only shifted to another target. But who? And where are they? And should we have expected already that Borsalino would act so familiar with her? There are a lot of gaps to fill in with the inevitable flashback when Kuma arrives on the scene.
Ah, but where is Bonney after that kick? Borsalino was able to send Luffy through the impassable barrier, but that was with much more of a wind-up. And if she did make it through instead of being thrown back, the Fabrio-phase is occupied by the Marines currently, so with her laser damage on top of being worn out from the offscreen death game, she could be in a really rough situation.
The last spread is a great bit of Gear Five insanity to take things to the next stage. I'm fine with the giant Luffy big damn hero moment grab becoming a Gear Five icon, but Oda should probably hold back on the next use a while so it doesn't get run into the ground. At least one arc without it from here, please. It has to give Borsalino some pause to know Luffy can make it in and out of the barrier on his own, so that he can't just attack safely from outside like he did with that first kick. Sure, Luffy takes damage with each trip, but when has something like that every stopped him?
The robot in the Fabrio-phase powering up is surprise though. It didn't do that when Luffy and Lucci were fighting. Or at least, we weren't shown it doing that at the time. Whether or not this is an oversight I guess will depend on if it just lights up while Gear Five is active, waiting for a command, or if it actually moves on its own.
As we shift into the (presumed) back half of volume 108, Oda seems to have his pieces in place for the climax. Luffy and Borsalino have skirmished to test each other, but with the latter's determination to do his job and the former having seen how quickly he can reach Vegapunk if left alone, the battle can only escalate. Meanwhile Kuma is coming, with more hints being built for the flashback, and Bonney potentially in danger to give him a hero moment. The only outlier is Saturn. Whether he'll enter the fight to increase the pressure on Luffy, or be the extra opponent that forces the exhausted Strawhats to retreat, or who even knows what. I could see volume 109 being the last of this arc, or at least the last full one, if things go forward quickly enough. But maybe it's too soon to make such a bold statement... Let's just see what the next stage of the fight has in store.
-
or it could be a location thing. Seeing how he activated G5 in the dome and now he did it outside the dome, which is where the robot is (outside the dome).
-
@Deicide I don't think the red line is higher than sky islands though. Like, at a certain altitude, obstacles doesn't matter because generally there isn't any. And he sent Nami from ground that is near sea level, so while it isn't "up" nor "straight", it could be very well be diagonally. Which meant that he could send himself diagonally in an incline towards a sky island altitude over the red line.
-
I don't feel it's worth wracking our brains over how Kuma's powers may or may not work at this point, when we don't even know if he's at the same capabilities anymore now that his brain was turned off. He's also been heavily damaged and not properly maintained or repaired in just over 2 years. I find it very unlikely that the government or celestial dragons even had him properly repaired after he returned from guarding the Sunny. He never even paws people away anymore, so maybe Egghead is the only location left in his databanks.
Seeing Akainu's damage to him should be the beginning of the end. He's on his way for a final reuniting with Bonney before he pulls a sacrifice and shuts down for good. I'd much rather that, than seeing him collapse on the sunny and being dragged along for repairs in Elbaf. Have him go out blowing up the lab too, if you want to double down on making the Government lose here. They can get York and/or the Seraphim, but nothing else.
They're very lucky the Sunny fell out of the Mech's arms and bounced far enough away. It probably should've been close enough to get damaged by the explosion, but I can ignore it. Maybe a missed opportunity to let Franky do something to push it further away, like a good old fashioned Coup De Vent.
Kizaru definitely the All-Star of this chapter. How do you deal with Emperors again? Push them away and deal with the them later. Bonus points since pushing both Luffy and Bonney off the dome, even if they survive, is just the most pragmatic way of dealing with them temporarily, so he can focus on Vegapunk.
Points to Bonney for trying. And hey, if she didn't distract Kizaru for all those...seconds I guess, he might've just went straight for Vegapunk and ended it faster. I have no clue what we'll see from her now. I guess the robot and her can keep the armada busy for an extra few minutes until Kuma arrives, and then Kuma can bring her back up. The robot will especially be weird though. If it's too strong for the armada to stop, then Saturn should be forced to come out and destroy it. If it's not....the armada should destroy it. I don't know, these are all the elements I'm left at a loss with. Just like the blackbeards ship, which I'm gonna stop speculating on at this point, cause I just have no idea how Oda is planning to make them cause chaos here.
Kizaru still has an arm free, so I can completely see him taking a shot at Stella or trying to fill the room with light blasts before Luffy pulls him away. That's assuming Kizaru can't just get away easily by turning too light-thin for Luffy to grip or something. It's about time to see another Vegapunk drop, and as I mentioned in spoilers, Edison is top of that list now that the code has been cracked. Atlas has to bring the light gloves out still, although that could always be next chapter and then she bites it, and Lilith is outside and needs to help Franky prepare the Sunny.
While I enjoy the urgency I feel from the armada and Kizaru now, I will say that one part that's hurting is the fact the rest of the crew are still just in the lab. It's all well and good that you cracked the code, Vegapunks, but even if the ship had made it to the right spot, you and the entire crew would still have a long way to run before you're ready to launch. Especially when you have 2 injured now. But maybe that's why a few people aren't shown yet. It's always possible Chopper, Jinbe, and/or Sanji are tending to and already moving Stussy and Robin to the ship.

Yeah, but he was not sending himself to or from a sky island. It was from an island at sea level to another at sea level, so the Red Line blocked his path and he had to climb it before resuming it.
Could he send himself to a point above Egghead instead? Maybe if it was the old thinking Kuma, but this one is a barely sentient being so I don't think it's reasonable to expect that kind of planning. -
@zeltrax225 The Red Line is an obstacle in the path. You can draw more or less a straight line between an island at sea level and an island in the sky and send someone on that path, but you can't do so between two islands if there's a huge wall thousands of kilometers high between them. I don't think the Paw Paw Fruit can send people away in an arch-like trajectore, it must be more or less a straight path, with a small (hundreds of meters tops) ascent at the start and descent at the end.

I think Kuma's powers are less about he defining a path to the destination and more like defining the destination and the power itself carries the victim there.
Case in point: Weatheria is a wandering island with not fixed location, and yet Kuma was able to precisely deliver Nami there.
-
It kinda says something to how little the CDs give a shit about the Fleet Admiral when they're demanding lobster from him lol. I'm glad Kuma at least roughed up the place before leaving.
I still dislike Nika power activating the robot so we better get some crazy toon physics against Kizaru next chap. Credit to him though, he's keeping up the pressure and not losing his cool, but now it's time for Luffy to get even for 2 years ago...
-
Kizaru feels like an honest goodness threat here! As one would imagine of course. Just light speed warping all over covering multiple targets shows his competence well. As I said in the spoiler thread though the impact of his kicks his never sold to me. His torso and supporting leg postures are just to relaxed for the impact they are supposed to give. Never looks that way with Sanji or Boa but maybe thats the whole point.

I kinda dislike this idea of Luffy mainly fighting Kizaru just to get even.
I'd much rather he'd be fighting him specifically because he's trying to save someone, rather than because of their separation from two years ago.
-
Not to mention there really wasn't much that Kizaru did that warranted meaningful revenge. While, yes, he did rough Zoro up a bit but that was it, Rayleigh kept him occupied from then on. The pacifistas inflicted the most overall damage, Sentomaru was more of a blatant hindrance to their escape and Kuma was the one and only that made everyone separate.

Even that and the situation with Vegapunk and Bonney isn't necessarily strongly motivating me to see Luffy kick Kizaru's ass as fast as possible.
That may sound weird, but that's how I honestly feel.
-
Seeing how Kuma is basically following his instinct/whatever Vegapunk left in him, I think it's perfectly logical for him to just set autopilot to Egghead and not really plan the most efficient route. That climb up the redline does a good job of emphasizing the fact that he does not think like a human anymore and is a barely functional being.
-
@electricmastro I meant it more in a "cathartic for the audience" kinda way, since this arc has numerous parallels to Sabaody. If he's doing it just to make sure Vegapunk doesn't die that's fine with me.
-
@RomanceDawn I think Kizaru's stances make he feel like he's relaxed and not really trying. It may just to further enphasize his apparent laziness. Or maybe it's a way to convey that he's yet to really get serious.

I guess I’ve long since moved on and gotten over that.
It does make me wonder what will happen to Kizaru though, again, if he’s killed by Devon and Laffitte for his devil fruit.
-
@electricmastro The story is making callbacks to Sabaody but Luffy getting payback on Borsalino is more for what happened in Marineford if you ask me... Borsalino was Luffy's biggest bully there right until Sakazuki gave him the final blow.
What would be the point of the Blackbeard Pirates taking Borsalino's fruit power though?
-
I don't see any point of Kuma going to Egghead unless he's going save the day (That and saying goodbye to Bonney). So, I'm assuming things are going to get much worse. Once the barrier's down, Saturn can take full control of the Pacifistas as well as the Seraphim.
-
I love how Akainu completely ignored everything the Celestial Dragons were saying to him.
