This discussion offends me! Stop it right now!
-
Is it really "from" Greg though ?
If you mean, was I the first to utter it as a world first? Depending on the theory, maybe not.
If you mean, was I the first to shout it as loud as possible without any outside inspiration having reached the conclusion on my own then depending on the theory, probably yes.
I've been doing this 20 years now.
I've said a lotta things about One Piece before people were even listening back to and even before my time on Kaizoku Fansubs forums. (^○^)
-
Greg confirmed to be French.
Time to change the threads name to Gaspards corner
-
Oh yeah, Romance Dawn, original name of the series. It has been there all along.
-
So Luffy will eat another DF? Or we believe he somehow inherited the Mera Mera while Sabo has it too?
-
So Luffy will eat another DF? Or we believe he somehow inherited the Mera Mera while Sabo has it too?
I know you're probably asking for Greg's opinion, but I just wanted to share mine as well.
I do think he inherited something of the Mera Mera no Mi through inheriting a part of Ace's will. Omissions by Oda are typically for a purpose and it's fishy that he would omit any reasoning behind Luffy's fire powers. I don't know if I believe it's something he (and others) can do because of the will of D, but I suppose that depends on what the D stands for. I think it stands for a lot of different parts that are all part of One thing, Devil among them, so I'm open to the theory, though I don't see any real evidence for it.
-
Still really afraid of this theory. It sounds horrible
-
Luffy's fire attacks are just like Sanji's. Or Marigold's. It's just them using haki in some yet unexplained way. They aren't throwing fireballs around, they are just attacking while covering a part of themselves in fire.
-
Marigold is using a match
-
Joy boy also had a brother who was on fire #cantfightfate
-
Marigold is using a match
Just like Sanji needed friction initially to start Diable Jambe, but later was able to do so at will.
-

Maybe but we still don't know it Marygold can do so.
And with Sanji there is always the possibility of his genetics
-
Doesn't make sense to me. Roger who was a D. revealed to Whitebeard what it means. Why would he tell him something as bland as "D. = DFx2" ? Especially since WB fought against Roger many times and obviously knew what kind of powers he had for a long time.
-
x theory sounds dumb.
y theory doesn't make sense.
A good deal of those thoughts come from head canon and the feeling of ownership of a series that doesn't actually exist outside being a fan.
It makes sense for a lot of things, but the author's job is to take what doesn't make sense, and make that not only believable, but satisfying.
I'm not married to any theory regarding D, but I'm open to the idea that even the most wild-sounding of theories could be correct if skillfully painted in the right light by the author.
An example of Oda coming up with a passable explanation for an inexplicable concept? Ace's age gap. Nobody bats an eye at that.
An example of a poorly executed outcome? Sanji making the cake. Unexpected outcome, but pretty lame execution.
It's why I keep coming back to this mantra, great mangaka must be great BS artists.
-
Maybe but we still don't know it Marygold can do so.
Marigold just didn't have enough mastery of it.
Diable Jamble's initial form was pretty "weak" compared to now. Sanji required friction to start it, and it just made his leg red-hot.
Nowadays he ignites it at will, and his leg is truly on fire.Marigold was probably just not powerful enough to start her fire by herself.
And with Sanji there is always the possibility of his genetics
Yeah, but one explanation that fits three characters is better than trying to find several explanations.
Besides, Diable Jambe is probably something Sanji learned or developed from training with "Red Leg" Zeff. -
I think at this point Sanji's supergenetics should be discarded.
Otherwise it rends the sacrifice of his mother moot.

Like him using the raid suit renders his training with Ivankov moot? I wanted Sanji to go the okama way.

Generally, I enjoy how busy and chaotic the covers are. They do such a good job of capturing the series' mood, and when Oda finds a layout that makes the layers of detail read smoothly, they're some of my favourites in the industry.
To bring some positivity back into the discussion, my favourites are 58, 88, 76, 62 and 64, with honourable mentions to 68, 97 and 38, among plenty of others.
Great choices! I would put most of these on my favorite list as well. I also really love 28, 37, 82, and 95.
-
Also good picks! 95 is a great example of how Oda can also do a lot with a simple layout and comparatively few characters when he sets his mind to it.

Do you think we’ll ever get to see Kong fight in One Piece? Maybe at the end war
-
Do you think we’ll ever get to see Kong fight in One Piece? Maybe at the end war
I expect him to appear again in the Mary Geoise arc I theorize comes after Wano. I don't know if he will have a fight, but that's not impossible.
-
Do you think we’ll ever get to see Kong fight in One Piece? Maybe at the end war
Yeah he'll fight King.
-
Sanji's Newkama Susanoo is coming. That cig almost caused a weird fire before Bege stomped it out. Sanji unintentionally caused that with his foot in 813. He lost his composure for a while after confirming his family was behind this in the invitation.
-
Greg can you tell us what you think Yamato’s devil fruit is and what it’s importance is?
-
I hope he will write a new column hinting about it.
-
I think at this point Sanji's supergenetics should be discarded.
Otherwise it rends the sacrifice of his mother moot.
Not necessarily.
She took that drug so her children would be able to have normal human emotions. It wasn't about the powers themselves. Sanji has his emotions in tact just as Sora intended so him awakening the powers he was supposed to have wouldn't invalidate her sacrifice.

Tagging this only bc I had a poster consider it a spoiler. Fair enough! As a reader I don't consider it that way but I can sympathize with the Sheldon Spoiler Theory as I also have my own particularities about spoilers. Open at your own risk.
! The only thing I can comment on is that my first reaction was that it felt 'off'.
! I won't detail how or why specifically at this time but there are aspects of the appearance that should lead to some questions.
! I'll only say that those questions have answers and you needn't worry about a thing. In fact, those answers help everything make sense. -
Has Oda ever pulled this stunt before, showing us a zoan hybrid form that we couldn't identify right away?
I mean, the fish fish fruit was a surprise but that's just the name, we'd seen the dragon already.

I posted this on Twitter… Frankly, if you already know something for sure about Yamato's Devil Fruit, I feel like even saying this constitutes vague spoilers. No offense intended, but I haven't seen many people discussing this reveal, or at lest the form itself being 'off', so this is really just planting the seed that something here is amiss, which is tipping Oda's hand that we haven't seen Yamato's full or true transformation yet.
I honestly don't know why you blocked me for saying this. I honestly did not intend to insult you - I believe this information / post is a bit too close to spoiler territory for my liking. You are of course free to ignore my feelings on this matter or say I am off-base. I'm sure your position knowing some privileged information is difficult and finding the right balance on what can and can't be revealed can be tricky. I was simply commenting that for me, personally I felt like this tipped off something that not many people, as far as I had seen had noticed. I'm not sure if this is predicated on some foreknowledge of the series, but if so, I think it falls into spoiler territory. I would have been open to a dialogue if you felt like I was off-base. I've been part of the OP online community since 2005, so I'm not some blind hater.

I'm not putting up with bad faith tweets, quote tweets, likes, and replies.
Your comment doesn't fit in there. You simply said, "This vague comment is a spoiler!"
Fair enough!
Despite having seen the discussion for myself and that being a response to it, I'm not going to argue what should/shouldn't constitute a spoiler because that's different for each person and I respect that. If that's how you feel then you shouldn't have to see my tweets so I took the liberty of blocking you. I'd suggest you do the same here.

I understand your perspective here, but I want to assure you - my tweet was not in bad faith. I sincerely meant what I said and said what I meant. We're likely seeing different parts of the ongoing discussion. The scope of my critique was limited to that single tweet, which is why I was so surprised I was blocked. Of course I would not block you as I appreciate the insight you provide. I only responded to this particular post because I felt like it was too close to spoiler territory. As I said, that is not intended as a broad criticism of your role in the OP community. I feel like being blocked is a disproportionate response in this situation as I only intended to say that it can be difficult finding the right balance of what to reveal and not reveal. You do a good job with that, but in this particular case, I felt like it was a bit to revelatory. I just want you to understand my perspective and intention.
I also want to say that I don't want to make this a public criticism / argument here either; I tried, but was unable to send a message to your inbox to sort this out.
-
My guess is Sulong Mink DF! (Moon Lion Zoan)
Based on the Greg's comment, the most immediate reaction you get is that it looks very similar to Carrot's Sulong form etc.
-
It doesn't remind me of Sulong as much as it does the fire hair style of Wano's various animals.

Your comment wasn't in bad faith.
Given the location it is a calling out. And if you feel it's a spoiler, I respect your ability to do so. I personally wouldn't call it such but I'm not going to argue that bc I wouldn't put up with someone arguing what should/shouldn't be a spoiler if I called them out.
In short, I concede fully to your position without argument.
Since I have a differing view that doesn't mean I won't do the same and given your reaction this time, I can only assume it will affect you the same way in the future.
In short:
You've stated how you feel.
I respect that feeling, despite having my own thoughts.
Since I'm not willing to change my interpretation, I'll try to make sure my actions don't affect you the same way in the same space. -

I wasn't aware it was on AP as well until later. I perhaps have antiquated notions of social media, but I didn't intend anything to be a 'call-out'. I post on twitter in the same way I would post on a message board and that's where I happened to be at the time.
I respect your not changing your perspective on what does and does not constitute a spoiler. As I said, my intention was only ever to share my perspective on this particular post. I recognize there is nuance to your position, which is why the scope of that commentary was limited. When I saw I was blocked, I came here to DM you and clarify my perspective and intention, but wasn't able to do so. As I said, my intention was conversational, not a call-out or criticism (hence why I said I did not intend offense and wanted to DM rather than post in this thread). I apologize, but I still do not understand your perspective on blocking me when the scope of my comment was entirely limited to a single message. Of course my aim is not to change your perspective on what does and doesn't constitute a spoiler, only to share my own perspective which can be freely ignored or acknowledged.
-
There's nothing you need to apologize for.
You've done literally nothing wrong.
In fact, this is a no-brainer so sorry for being slow on the pick-up, I'm sorry that what I wrote felt like a spoiler to you.
-
Hey Greg, can you tell us if Japanese readers are just as confused and divided about Yamato's Devil Fruit as we Westerners are?
-
They're still waking up on this side but from what little I've seen, yes, they absolutely are.
-

Ah, well I'm glad we could clear it up. It's okay and you need not apologize for your post. I suppose it's a case of misinterpretation. I understood being blocked as a sign I had incurred some type of offense, which was not my intention (wasn't supposed to be a 'call-out'). And as I said, I wanted to make clear that the scope of this comment was intentionally limited to that single message and isn't indicative of any broader issue I have with your posts or role, which again, I know is nuanced and requires discretion.
-
Hey Greg, you don't have to reply.
When Yamato's hybrid form was introduced, I just thought it was odd to show it off here. But now that I've seen your comment, I wonder, is his appearance just off bc it's not the tiger a lot of fans expected? Or is it off bc of some other appearance related thing? I mean only thing I can tell is that it's close to Su Long but not really..
Hmmm seems this fruit has something surprising about it.
Can't wait to see what it is!
-
They're still waking up on this side but from what little I've seen, yes, they absolutely are.
Thanks! I think that points towards it not being a well-known yokai, at best a lesser known one that isn't commonly used in art and media or one that doesn't have clear, distinguishable features… Like a shapeshifter or chimera with no set rules about the animal parts it uses
-
Before this chapter came out I would have bet serious money on it being a White Tiger devil fruit, I’m so glad I didn’t
Maybe Avalo Pizzaro will have it, if he really was part of Kaido’s crew
-
My thoughts are that Yamato's devil fruit is related to either the monsters of Wano or is a Human Human Fruit: Model Mink, which would be really cool.
-
Well, what else, who else, have we seen produce smokey firey effects like that? Luffy's gear 2 jumps instantly to mind. Ace and Marco's fire fruits.
But for other mystic fruit zoans? Kaidou's doesn't do that. Sengoku's doesn't. Katarina's doesn't (but we only saw hers briefly). So, even if its a Kirin fruit or whatever, why's it getting that wacky fire effect when other mystic zoans don't, except the fire based ones?
Kirins are sometimes portrayed with fire, but they also tend to have beards and scales and antlers, so while it could certainly be stylized for One Piece, it doesn't feel like a Kirin to me… especially since we actually saw one at the start of Wano.
Also, is it missing the usual face divider zoans get that always creeps me out.
[hide]
There's similarities, especially with the eyebrows, but it doesn't look right.
Notably that kirin had polkadots.. but do does the lion dog, so that may just be a Wano animal thing.[/hide]
EDIT: It's been pointed out that is NOT a Kirin, despite many people saying it was such at the time. So maybe not as revelent as I thought.
-
Hawkins mount was a Komashika, (shika is deer) and all of the Koma animals have fire-like hair and/or tails. I don't think it was ever supposed to be a Kirin but does somewhat resemble it after Oda added the fiery hair to an antlered 4 legged animal.
The Komainu, like Komachiyo, are an actual named creature in Japanese and usually appear as statues at Shinto shrines. Oda apparently ran with this and replaced the inu=dog with other animals and called them koma(animal) to create new traditional-looking Japanese creatures I guess.
I thought maybe Kirin at first but Yamato looks too canine or something along those lines so I am leaning heavily toward Raiju now. Raiju are usually depicted as being dog/wolf-like or like a tanuki. One interesting trait is that it is usually depicted as having at least 2 tails and there is an unbroken line in the middle of Yamato's tail that means he could possibly have 2 tails. Of course Raiju are thunder gods which makes the fiery hair misleading but I think like all the Koma animals, Oda might just use it for style.
-
I stand corrected then!
Lots of folks called it a Kirin at the time.
-
It wasn't until 2 volumes later that someone asked Oda what Hawkins' mount was in an SBS and he responded by naming them all Koma+animal, easily distinguishable by their flame-like hair/fur. He listed Komainu (dog), Komashika (deer), Komadane (great dane), and Komatori (chicken). Tori is both bird and chicken but the kanji used was for chicken. Dane was very strange considering it is a dog but not a Komainu, also it uses English in a story about ancient Japan. Could have done without the Komadane in my opinion. I don't even know when Great Danes would have reached Japan.
-
Ah, neat!
I haven't followed the SBS' as closely as I used to. I tend to only read them in teh volumes and I just… haven't gotten around to reading the volumes the last few times I've bought them.
-
Greg do you think that WW and Sasaki are really out ? Or will they get up ?
