Chapter 981: Joining the Fight
-
Oh, looks like Big Mom is getting the split personality treatment.
Unless I'm misreading something and she's actually speaking to someone, but it doesn't seem like there's anyone else there since the chapter says the place's empty.
-
It's the makeup. I think she is just dumbfounded.
-
If Linlin is swapping her personality I wonder what could be triggering it? Falling out of the sky and presumedly into the ocean changed her up and a good bonk on the head by a dinosaur. If it happened here I doubt anyone beyond Kaido would have struck her and last time that happened was days ago. If her persona did change just now then she may have a serious and unstable condition that will carry on from now and until she's written out of the story. Her facial expression give the impression that she is O-Lin but just a moment before she had a conversation about her ship making it. This implies that she had all her memories and was in her normal state of mind.
I'm actually a little worried about the Big Mom Pirates right now. As in I think Oda is trying to give the reader a false sense of security in regards to how they would perform in this war.
Love Sanji floating over to the pleasure house and coming out like some tragedy occurred, lol. The super novas were pretty funny as well with their interaction.
The Numbers have a bit more mystery surrounding them. Bigger than giants and seemingly can't be controlled. Looking forward to their story.

She is talking to someone, it wouldn't make sense for an "other" personality to be aware of the Hakumai port. She is simply not alone in there, we saw there are women there helping her get ready for the party.

I mean, the person could have left. Or she could be talking on a den den. Or they were wrong and there were people in there. Like Big Mom.
-
Damn! I wasn't ready for that Marco reveal at the end of the chapter. The way the Big Mom Pirates got surprised twice in a row really reveals how important Katakuri is to their crew.
-
Wait what? So… Izo and Marco not coming to wano together?
Or maybe Neko sailing with Izo and then Marco changed his mind and just fly to wano
-
Big Moms kids are clearly there to just get her out after the war and play a bigger part in Elbaf etc. They won't be a huge factor during the war in Wano.
-
Wish I hadn't read the spoilers this time. So why did Marco changed his mind? Is Weevil defeated?
-
The Meltans are still around.
It's unlikely but I would like for them to appear in the anime.
-
So Big Mom told her children to climb the waterfall again, she didn't know about the port and no one bothered to tell her?
-
My thoughts:
- Apoo probably has other sound-based attacks that can't be avoided like that.
- Big Mom and God Usopp are about to meet. The universe is not ready.
- What were the Big Mom pirates doing all these days since they were stopped by King? Maybe they were sent back to WCI to retrieve something or someone? (Yamato's bride?)
- I'm sure the Big Mom Pirates aren't done for. No way Perospero and Smoothie will be let out of the action. Actually, I think all the ones featured in this chapter will have roles.
- I wonder who else is with Neko. Betting on Jaws and Vista.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Wish I hadn't read the spoilers this time. So why did Marco changed his mind? Is Weevil defeated?
Either defeated or busy evading the marines.
I think Blackbeard is going to recruit him… I mean, his mother. She's the brain, he's the weapon.
-
Big Mom is talking to someone over a denden mushi. That person was supposed to see the arrival of the crew, and was expecting them in the main port. Big Mom and her children don't know about the main port, and so the children tried to get in via the waterfall.
This will probably create a conflict between BM and Kaido, since she wasn't told of the port (which hints at a lack of trust) and that led to losing another ship and endangering her crew.
-
Uh oh, Jinbe's not on the color spread, looks like he still isn't a crew member… :ninja:
-
@Kaido:

He, Franky and Robin are busy somewhere else. :ninja:

I'm of that opinion too. Oda left Katakuri, Cracker and Oven out, the ones among the monsters who got the most action already, but sent Smoothie, Perospero and Daifuku (… and Compote), the ones still lacking in that front. Seems too much of a coincidence to not think this group is going to join the action.
Still, would have loved to have the ones left behind join at a later point for some non-fight development, but it seems like Smoothie's group was only contacted now so there isn't time for reinforcements to arrive.
-
I loooove that cover. I havent feel that postive about 1 in a long time. Maybe ever.

Exactly. I'm sure the ones that were highlighted in this chapter will get fights ahead. As for the others, maybe they could be there and get background fights with the Whitebeard Pirates? Since we know their strength already, they don't need to get full fights, and it would also make the Whitebeard pirates be useful while not stealing the spotlight.
-

They didn't even seem to know about the alliance until now, so that's out of the cards (the bride thing, I mean).
-
Usopp might convert 1 of them Numbers. I can already see it. Even if they aren't exactly Elbaf Giants, Usopp has a knack for gaining the respect of Giants.
Shanks ask Marco to join. BM ask King to join her. Marco knocked the BM Pirates down and so did King. I thought the official name would be Mark of the Phoenix.
Look at that luxurious hair. That's definitely Izo. Why are people still questioning this? There's a chance that Izo and Marco aren't the only WB pirates on the Mink ship. If the Fleet makes it, will they knock the BM Pirates down as well?
The emphasis on Yamato is similar to how Kata was a the late focus for the last arc.
BM and Chopper staring at each other is the best part of the chapter. Commander Chopper has been the highlight of the last few chapters. It's late, but not too late in the game for Commander Chopper to be MVP of the arc. So far, Orochi is 1st place for best character of the arc. Then Queen (2nd), Zoro (3rd), Chopper (4th), followed by Robin (5th). Honorable mentions: Denjiro, Tama, BM, Sanji and Oden.
Aaah, as said in the spoilers, no break. You love to see it.
-
@Kaido:
Uh oh, Jinbe's not on the color spread, looks like he still isn't a crew member… :ninja:
Oda is clever. He's going to only use partial crew colorspreads from now and use plausible deniability about Jinbe's membership for whatever reason.
-
They didn't even seem to know about the alliance until now, so that's out of the cards.
There's nothing in the dialogue saying they just found about it. The spoiler translations did imply it, but not Stephen's. They are just commenting on it.
And really, it would be weird if that crew just stood by for over a week doing nothing.
-
Chapter was extremely hilarious. Also just wow at Marco being here this early.
-
I didn't realize that they went up the waterfall again on BM's specific order. That makes it even funnier.
-
He has spoken. As long as he double checks the source, it should be fine. He should edit it if he has time. He can even drop his own commentary here and there

I'm talking more about the bride thing. They seem pretty confused about the alliance, so it's unlikely that they went all the way back just to get someone when they barely know the details.
Especially because the alliance was only made 4 days ago.

Stephen's actually made it more likely, with Linlin commenting she just found out the ship is fine.
I'm editing the wiki right now to include a "can teleport magically to Wano" among Caesar's abilities.

Sorry to break it to you but if you change the Wiki to Japanese it has all of 307 pages as compared to the English versions 5660. I think he is using a different, Japanese fan website.

To me that line is just meant to know the ship is arriving.
Again, I really doubt the Big Mom Pirates were out there for over a week doing nothing.
-
It was a joke…
-
Amazing to hear that we're getting another chapter next week. I was prepared to be biweekly for a year or more. I assume the last person is Izo and it's interesting to find that there's any doubt about it. Who do other people think it might be?

For some reason a few people think it's Bonney, which makes absolutely no sense lol
-
Why did Oda recycled the cat themed pirate crew to Who-Who? He is no Kuro.
So far, Orochi is 1st place for best character of the arc..
WTF?!
-
Poor, poor Big Mom pirates.
But there is still hope, maybe this time they get the information about the hidden port…I don't know why, but I hope Flampe gets the club treatment from Kaido. :ninja:
-

I think another cat-themed crew is fine after 900+ chapters.
Also, kuro was the "black cat" crew. Who's Who's more varied, lol.

Oooooh.
That was Big Mom.
I thought it was 1 of the Numbers…. -

Again, I really doubt the Big Mom Pirates were out there for over a week doing nothing.
I also don't see them just leaving Big Mom behind.
It's very likely they just waited for her to contact them. Going up the waterfall was not an option since King could just push them off again. The way they talk about the alliance also heavily implies they learned about it recently, what with them all going "Alliance? We talk about that later!".
Plus, the people present are the same from before. You'd think they would've brought reinforcements if they had truly gone back.
-
WTF?!
He ain't wrong. Oro-dude has been on the ball and consistent this whole time, and everybody else had been made to carry the idiot ball. Some truly top-notch Spandaming
-
Damn, that Colorspread, is that a Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten reference!!
Number Hacha´s design came in quite simple, if the other Numbers also share this kind of simplistic designs, I'd say that yup, another of Usopp's lie is coming out to be true this arc.
lmao, Queen's faces are the best.
Momo'r retrieval team is pure fire.
Are people upset that their favorite worstgen from two weeks ago got nullified by earplugs?
is not just earplugs

One Piece manga chapter 981
-
Katakuri comes to Wano, kicks his own crewmate's ship down the waterfall to join the club of first division commanders.
I really wonder what the beef between Who'swho and Queen is. Who'swho seems to be getting set up to be quite and important character.
-
Anyone think the Numbers have something to do with Caesar's gigantification experiments? We did see a whole room full of frozen giants back at Punk Hazard, i have a feeling the Numbers are supposed to be the "succesful" ones that Caesar sold to Kaido. There is simply too much emphasis put on these guys and there is clearly something off about them, I'm guessing we're in for some sort of explanation on their origins at some point.
-
The gigantification was a project he did for BM, though, not for Kaido.
-
@Lao:

Unlikely, since we saw someone like that in Oden's flashback, while he was with Whitebeard.

They're at least 20 years old, at which point Caesar would have been 20 when he created them.
I think it's more likely that the Numbers are the connection to Oars. Maybe they're some kind of proto-giant or something. Maybe they bred with humans or oversized humans and thus regular giants were born.
-
Well i guess they aren't the ogres native to onigashima
-
Why did Oda recycled the cat themed pirate crew to Who-Who? He is no Kuro.
Or is he? :ninja:
-
The shoes don't fit :ninja:
-
Unless his coat also has a poop emblem he is officially less fun than Kuro
