! Was that a motherfucking Ahsoka Tano cameo.
Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F

! I just like that they finally gave Chewy his medal
! I wonder what Disney plans to from here on in? -
So, basically, Disney bought Star Wars from George Lucas and then let a bunch of directors fight over it like a new toy until they broke it.
Just like the novels then?
Much quicker this time around though.
-

The plan as I heard it was to create an anthology series and hire all the most famous directors to make completely unrelated one shot stories set in the Star Wars universe.
JJ Abrams was supposed to direct episode 7-9 to somehow prepare the universe for the anthology format.
Then the two ideas got fused together. -

Squeeze every last drop of it until it runs dry and people cant stand it anymore

Should’ve gotten Martin Scorcese to direct Episode IX.
I would've picked David Lynch personally.

A well-directed and produced movie, but with all the women characters not talking and having a total screentime of 45 seconds. Truly, the only way to heal the divide.
-

I'm pretty sure that almost happened with Return of the Jedi.
-
He's probably about to say that StarWars isn't cinema. And he wouldn't be wrong
At least the new movies. We need all the real directors who make cinema to rise up and say what they think about superhero movies and whatnot. Like every time a mediocre and popular movie comes out. Maybe Hollywood would change then

I understood the Irishman reference and the 45 seconds is a nice exaggeration, the question was if its a joke that movies could be so or not

Hey now, Lorraine Bracco got a lot of screen time in Goodfellas…mainly being really angry a lot.
Anyway, just saw Rise of Skywalker. I liked it fine.
! I guess it's pretty much a middle-of-the-road Star Wars movie, not that I was expecting much. I'm still confused as to how Palpatine survived being thrown down a shaft and the Death Star exploding. But hey, at least we got another great Ian McDiarmid performance out of it. Also, we never found out what Finn wanted to tell Rey. I mean, I can assume what he wanted to tell her, but I guess we'll never know for sure. Oh yeah, and I guess Rey had a thing for Ren/Ben all this time. That was…unnecessary.
! Also, one piece of logic that confuses me in this movie, and Return of the Jedi for that matter, is that it's perfectly okay for Rey and Luke to mow down Stormtroopers and other mooks without turning to the dark side, but killing the Emperor or Vader? Nope, that's a big no-no.
! Oh yeah, and Chewie getting a medal. LOL -
! The movie was going well until Kylo introduces the old EU's favorite plot point halfway through, then it's just a disorienting trip as you spend most of the rest of the movie trying to reconcile what the fuck you just heard with the rest of reality.
! And then Palpatine yells DO IT and the movie is good again for a few minutes while you take that in. Movie then drops in quality again when Ben shows up to the final fight, increases when Palpatine yeets him down a hole, increases a little more when Ahsoka Tano gets a cameo in a legit Star Wars movie, and then bottoms out into one of those "Jesus christ, roll credits already" things. -
I thought Episode 9 was pretty good in my opinion.
! I really like Wedge's cameo during the final battle. During the final battle between Rey and Palpatine, I like the cameos from Obi Wan, Kanan, Yoda, and Ahsoka.

! And if that's the case, how we can be sure he's ever dead ever? Well, I guess we'll just assume he's dead for reals this time, unless they decide to make episodes X-XII.

! I recall in the EU, this was an issue, and like they had to throw him into the Force equivalent of a black hole or something. Though EU!Palpatine was one step away from being the full-blown Anti Christ of Star Wars. -
Not gonna lie, Episode IX was pretty stupid. But at the same time, I really loved it. It felt like a fitting conclusion to the saga overall in terms of story and spectacle. It did take some risky maneuvers, and while I wouldn't argue with anyone who hated those maneuvers, I personally felt like they all helped to strengthen the conclusion in some way rather than drag it down.
That being said, I do have a couple issues with the film, which I'll delve into below.
! By far the weakest part of it was its characters. The only ones who felt particularly compelling to me were 3PO, Leia, Lando, and Palpatine. Perhaps Luke too. The new, major characters were all rather limited. Let's start with Rey. Her character remains thin, so it's pretty hard to emotionally get behind her power and her fights. The impact of her character on the fandom will probably be limited mainly to inspiring little girls. And I'm totally happy for those little girls, I just wish she could inspire me to that degree.
! >! Was Rey being a Palpatine actually important to the movie? It did impact Sheev's approach to her in the climax, but ultimately her thin character didn't really convince me that this was super important…or that her becoming a member of the Skywalker family at the end was a super nice moment.
! Ultimately, this film is driven 90% by its plot, and while I appreciate that the first half of the movie was focused on the main trio working together for the first time, that much focus on plot meant it was impossible to give them interactions of the same quality as the original trilogy. Poe used to be a spice dealer, Finn…might be getting cucked by Ben Solo? That's all we got to know. It sure would have been nice to have them together in the previous two movies.
! Also, I don't think there was much purpose in creating Jannah who hung around Finn in the last half. Why not replace her with Rose...a character who's already been well established, who could do all of the things Jannah could (with her experience riding the Canto Bight beasts potentially coming into play to lead the ground attack on the Star Destroyer), and who could have used some good moments after her really dumb "saving what we love" moment at the end of TLJ. But alas, Rose was a minor character who still seemed rather obsessed with keeping Finn alive above all else.
! Hux being the spy was rather obvious but it was honestly hilarious how petty his motivations were. Long live the King of Pettiness, short though your reign may have been.Again, if you thought the progression of this plot was super stupid, if you thought this film was a slap in the face to The Last Jedi or could not atone for its sins or the ones of the sequel trilogy in general, I won't argue with that. This move didn't stun me with its story…but at the end of the day, it was satisfying. Having really liked Star Wars since age 9 I'm glad to have gotten the opportunity to see a new batch of films in the theater. Seeing the series logo blare across the screen before reading the scrolling intro text is something that doesn't ever get old. This movie made the 9 year old in me really happy and I honestly couldn't have asked for more.
! While I was a bit "meh" on Kylo resurrecting Rey with The Force, it did bring up an interesting thought. Anakin turned to the Dark Side in the prequels because he thought it was the only way to save Padme. Instead he ended up killing her and thousands if not millions of other people. Ben Solo kept the woman he loved from dying by following the Light Side's principles and sacrificing his own life for her. You could probably make this argument for Vader in Episode 6 too, although this instance was a lot more centered around The Force.
-
regardless of what you think of the new movies at least we can all agree that there better than the prequels (1 through 3)
-
I could see that as individual movies but Im not so sure as a whole.

I don't agree with that at all.
-
I don't agree with that at all.

-
I thought the prequels were universally hated, are these new ones really that bad?
The prequels are internally consistent and know what story they are trying to tell.
The new stuff is jumbled and seems to constantly be switching focus. The sequels are a clear story with a clear vision told in boring way and with elements people dont like. The sequels are string of three each with the own individual strengths but that dont fit together. Both the prequels and orginals are clear trilogies. One is good and the other is considered bad but they are trilogies but I struggle to give this name to the last ones.
Three fine movies that don't fit together or three bad movies that tell one clear story. Which is better is everyone's game.
-
regardless of what you think of the new movies at least we can all agree that there better than the prequels (1 through 3)
The prequels are badly written but are thematically consistent as a whole, gave great castings in Sheev and Obi-Wan, and lead to the creation of two beloved instances of animated spin-off material (Genndy's and Filoni's). AND ALL OF THOSE HOT MEMES.
The sequel's were a inconsistent mess of direction, the new characters have very little charisma to fully lead the movies, the First Order and the New Republic seem to be in a inconsistent positions (wouldn't the first order be the resistance of former empire member against the rise of the new republic, never mind the logic the nazi power imagery was more important in the end), the kept playing too safe (seriously again with the two star destroying super weapons), and had a second movie that set-up nothing for the the final instance.
Of course, that's MY opinion. The sequel trilogy also had it's cool moments and scenes, but for me they didn't jive enough to compensate the bad points.
In the end the prequels vs sequels will be a matter of taste and opinion, meaning it's subjective to the one watching to pick the one that suits him better. -
I thought the prequels were universally hated, are these new ones really that bad?
Consensus will never cover everyone and on the internet it might be vastly overstated. As for me, I much prefer the prequels and originals to the new trilogy. I was very interested in the characters (Finn, Rey, and Kylo) after The Force Awakens, but grew to dislike or stop caring about them completely in Last Jedi. Rise of Skywalker is just a mess for me and makes me want to forget any of these films happened. The prequels have lots of issues, but I enjoyed the story of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine a whole lot, and enjoy all three movies for what they are. Plus, both of the Clone Wars make Revenge of the Sith so much better every time I watch it. Rebels is good, too, but not as good as The Clone Wars.
Maybe most importantly, the prequels felt like new and interesting parts of a story I was already invested in, whereas the New Trilogy feel like worse retreads of old stories that seem to want to spoil the old stuff. Not for me. (I understand that lots of people felt Anakin's portrayal made them dislike Vader, but that's not my opinion.)
-
regardless of what you think of the new movies at least we can all agree that there better than the prequels (1 through 3)
Definitely not… if the original trilogy are the classic Mario games (Mario Bros 1-3 and World), the prequels are the NSMB games and episodes 7-9 are crappy mobile ripoffs.
They don't even feel like Star Wars to me.
-
Wow never thought I'd see this many people defending the prequels
-
For all the prequels' faults, at least it felt like Lucas was trying to do something different with Star Wars.
-
Wow never thought I'd see this many people defending the prequels
It's not so much about the prequels it just that those three movies dont really make a trilogy. The prequels might be considered bad but at least they felt like chapters of the same story.
-
Eh, I rewatched the prequels before Episode 7 and it was almost torture for me to sit through. They honestly felt like emotionless cash-grabs to me, without the heart and soul of the original trilogy. None of the characters grabbed me, they completely ruined Vader for me, the dialogue was atrocious, the special effects have aged pretty badly…ehh. The Force Awakens, at the very least, truly captured the feeling of Star Wars for me and made me excited for the franchise again. I do have to rewatch TLJ and TRoS before I can compare them to the prequels fairly, but right now, I'd rank them above the prequels despite all their flaws.
-
It's the edgy thing to say now that the prequels were actually good and only boomers hate them.
-
Attack of the Clones is still the shittiest Star Wars movie, there's been no movement on that front.
Ian McDiarmid is carrying Revenge on his back, because no one else in the movie seems to be either having fun or wanting to be there. Frank Oz gave more of a shit about his one scene in Last Jedi than he did for all three prequels.
Watching Clone Wars actually makes Revenge worse because all the characters you learned to care about in Clone Wars (except for Palpatine) suddenly suck in Revenge.
-
It's the edgy thing to say now that the prequels were actually good and only boomers hate them.
I hate to devalue (is that even a word?) anybody's opinion, but I have to agree with this a little. A couple of years ago, everyone was hating on the prequels and saying George Lucas ruined Star Wars, but suddenly, now that there is a new scapegoat in town, they weren't all that bad and George Lucas was at least trying something interesting? It just seems a little fickle to me.
-
The Last Jedi was trying something interesting.
Just a shame that the fandom and JJ utterly rejected all of it.
-

Or maybe they weren't? Maybe the voices of those who hated them were louder, just like the voices of those who hate (and love) these new ones are loud too. Is it really that hard to believe that the adults on this forum have the opinion they're telling you?

@Cyan:
! I appreciate that Rise of Skywalker has made me entertain the idea of Sheev fucking.
! Judging by how young Rey's parents looked ~15 years post-ROTJ, it's statistically more likely than not that Sheev was spreading his seed after the attempt on his life left him scarred and deformed…
-
Mhh, Sheev seeds, time to change the subject.
I saw the Chewie medal scene just like the Millenium Falcon dice handover in TLJ. What is that item? Does it mean anything? I never noticed those in the previous six movies.
Those scenes are the definition of superfluous fan pandering.
-

It's always the case that the one who dislike something are the loudest, but that doesn't change the fact that the prequels were generally not well-received. I mean, is this really up for debate? Also, I don't know what being an adult has anything to do with anything, but I didn't say that anybody was lying about his or her opinions, just that it feels a little strange that suddenly, everybody seems to be praising the apparent strengths of the prequels now that there are new movies to hate.
-
It's so easy to snark and nitpick on this movie that you may feel just sad about the whole ordeal. About as easy (and a somewhat popular belief by now) is to point how little humanity you can find or relate to, with what is an enjoyable ride tasked to deliver more than it could have ever conceivably done.
-

You were responding to a couple posters in this forum that you thought it was weird we preferred the prequels to the sequels because lots of people hated the prequels 15 years ago. I'm just pointing out that this is a mostly 18+ forum and I think most of us are well beyond liking or hating things for edginess sake. It's natural for opinions to change over 15 years, and its natural that the more uncommon opinions will come out 15 years later. It's also makes a lot of sense that if people hate the sequels they'd be doing so on the basis of comparison with the prequels and OT. If they find things they like about the prequels through rewatches, then I don't see the problem? Also Member Berries.
-
, the dialogue was atrocious,
While the dialog was stilted it was still a lot less corny than what you heard in the original films.
The Force Awakens, at the very least, truly captured the feeling of Star Wars for me
Well FA essentially aped on A New Hope as opposed to trying to be something entirely new.
@Cyan:

I mean given the way the movie ends makes a whole lot of sense.
- Anakin loses both his legs and gets horrifically scarred (his fault) causes the self fullfilling prophecy he was trying to avoid.
- Padme dies in childbirth after her husband tries to strangle her to death in addition to hearing about him losing his shit.
- Mace goes out like a bitch.
- Obi Wan and Yoda watch as the Emperor, their former student, and their forces wipe out most of the jedi.
Only people who have any reason to be happy is the Emperor even with Mace fucking his shit up and maybe Boba Fett still nursing hurt feelings over watching his dad get killed by a Jedi.
-

No one's opinions changed, not really. No one suddenly thinks the dialogue is good, or the acting is good, or George's directing is good. And they also have a lot of good in them. And one good thing in them - that no one really paid any attention to, because you wouldn't really, until the sequel trilogy came out - is the consistency. Good or bad, George had a vision. This was the fall of Anakin, and rise of the empire, and he carried that story out.
The original trilogy came out, and it was just a story of good vs evil, and a son redeeming his father. Then the prequels came out, and added the prophecy layer to it - which I'm fine with. The empire was defeated, the story of the Skywalker's was complete, and though its finer details are still hazy, the prophesy was fulfilled. And then the sequel trilogy came, and no one really planned ahead, and it failed to justify its existence in my eyes. Without being too spoilery, the last act of this film is just a rehash ROTJ, which is mind-blowing.
George was always a good story man. I would have liked a story by him, but with someone else writing it. Bring on the Whills, I don't care.
-
Snoke should've been Plagueis especially since this supposedly ended the Skywalker saga.
-
If Snoke was Plagueis that would have meant that Sidious failed at offing his master. Retroactively making him a failure at basic Sith methodologIy.
I can't see that going over well with the fandom (as if anything else does…)
-
That would depend on whether Plagueis survived because Sidious didn't do the job properly or if it were because he actually managed to reincarnate himself into Snoke. In the latter case, his current state would have been because the Dark Side inevitably eats away at anybody using it.
If that were the story, I think most people would have been alright with it.
-
Got to see the movie today. It was pretty meh. For someone reason it felt just okay through the whole thing. The only parts I actually enjoyed were
! Rey and Ben teleporting stuff to each other it was also the only memorable part to me. Having Ben die felt like a weird cop out. Villains here just don't ever seem to answer for their crimes. Even if he did change sides briefly only Rey knows he did good in the end. But also he's not able to be held accountable for all his crimes. That just kinda bugged me. But like I said before it was just okay. I didn't hate anything about it but I didn't really enjoy it either.
