Who directed the special? Mike or Joel?

Here's someone selling it on ebay, I actually own all the amazon boxes, and I have to say, this looks much better.
It looks nice!
Last week, I bought the OP Collections 1-4 and Film Z used from SecondSpin when they had the buy 2 get the 3rd for $1 sale. They came in the mail yesterday and Collections 1 and 4 didn't include the paper slip covers. >< Oh well, at least they came to $40-50, which is a pretty damn good deal. My cheap-ass won't buy new DVDs/BluRays unless they're limited editions or on sale.
Who directed the special? Mike or Joel?
I don't think it's been announced yet. Hopefully soon.
-
If you wonder what the price for the 20th aniversary boxset at Walmart, it was 69.99. It pretty much more cheaper then the amazon boxset that contain Collection 1 - 4.

Looks like I made the mistake of preordering Nebulandia with a few other items and Rightstuf is waiting for the stuff that releases the first week of July before they ship it out, I'd guess. Always feels so random when they'll just send something straight out on it's own, or hold onto it for more items. Guess that's what I get for insisting on putting everything together for minimal orders and free shipping.

Rather off-topic from the current discussion, but let's hope and pray that the One Piece anime NEVER falls exclusively into the hands of Netflix, should something happen Funimation discontinuing the series. Neon Genesis Evangelion just dropped yesterday and everything has been horrific about it. The show's old existing dub was caught up in licensing hell, so they were forced to a commission a new one. Instead of hiring back the old cast (which came back for the recent End of Evangelion movies, and even volunteered to come back again for the series), they totally ignored them and hired a whole set of new ones right from underneath them. And without going into much detail, the new dub is completely inferior to the 22-year-old old one, lacking any sort of personality of any kind. Even the subtitles are inferior and filled with translation errors, strange romanizations, and unsubbed Japanese text. They even removed the friggin' ending/insert theme "Fly Me to the Moon", WHICH IS AN IMPORTANT PLOT POINT OF THE SHOW, apparently since they didn't want to spend the extra money to license the song.
Combined with Netflix's horrible track record of releasing new episodes of anime in "binge-able" batches instead of simulcasting like everyone else is doing nowadays, horrible CG reboots (check out the new Saint Seyia show coming), and horrendous Live Action adaptations, let's pray that our stream overlords never license the OP for a global release.

I will be the voice of dissent and say that this new Netflix dub is awesome, Shinji was always meant to sound like a child and its just a song. Jeez.

Opinions on the voice acting quality of the redub aside, the point I was trying to make is that Netflix doesn't know how to competently or respectfully handle anime as the other seasoned licensors do. Funimation, Sentai, and Viz were all started by fans, with fans in mind, but Netflix certainily wasn't. They only see anime as something that's somewhat popular and want to do whatever is cheapest for them and rakes in the most profit, fan input be damned. Sort of sounds like another entity that used to handle anime poorly cough 4kids cough. Don't tell me you wouldn't be a little upset if Colleen and the rest of the crew were replaced by a team of Netflix scabs, I know just about everyone here would be.
Also, regarding the music, think about this. Overseas licensors have already had major trouble with gaining the rights to several of the openings and closings for OP, so if Netflix won't shell out the extra money for one song in Evangelion, chances are they won't shell out the money to license a majority of One Piece's music. Get ready for We Go being the opening for over 300 episodes!
And physical DVD/Blu-Ray releases, you can forget it. Netflix hardly ever does that with their anime, much less their own live action originals. Gen Fukunaga was absolutely right when he said Funimation would have handled the property in a much better way…
-
I wouldn’t be surprised if Funimation lost One Piece to Netflix, especially considering the live-action show that Netflix currently owns. I can see them wanting to own the anime too; maybe Toei wants Netflix to own OP too, and that’s why Funimation has had a hard time releasing new episodes.
We don’t know what’s going on with the old Evangelion dub; it’s clearly a licensing nightmare, as proven by years of no releasing it. Maybe all they could do was make a new dub.

You do realize that quite a few DBZ actors started their tenure as “scabs” themselves, right?
I'm not defending the way Netflix chose to handle this, but our gripes should be directed squarely at them, and not at the cast that's doing their best with what they've been given. The 4Kids actors were never given any love, but the majority of them have done, and still do, great work on other shows. And hardly anyone would say a bad word against the DBZ cast today, despite how poorly received they once were.
As it is, with prolific actors like Carrie Keranen, Ben Diskun, Ray Chase in the cast, it’s obvious they weren’t just yanked off the street. It’s being taken as seriously as any other job as far as I can tell.
-
I agree with Shift, you shouldnt malign the new cast. They didnt make the decision to replace everyone.

I kinda doubt that, if that were the case than why is Toei letting Funimation release the specials? Also I don't know if Netflix is able to handle a 900+ episode series, it seems like they have trouble handling some 100+ episode series. For example, They haven't added anything beyond the end of the Soul Society saga to Bleach and they only have access to 48 episodes of Fairy Tail. Compared to Hulu which has all episodes of Bleach and 72 episodes of Fairy Tail. Also considering how difficult it is to work with Toei, I get the feeling their live-action One Piece series is their way of having it on their service without having to deal with Toei. Also from what I've read on it, it doesn't seem like Toei has any involvement with the live-action series, since it's being handled by an American company Tomorrow Studios.

I'm well aware, but the questionable mistakes Funimation made in the past were during the Barry Watson years. After he left, they started listening the fanbase more closely and become what they are today. Nowadays they even make it a practice to go out of their way to bring back old cast and crew for movies, sequels, and reboots for consistency (see the End of Evangelion movies, Fruits Basket 2019, etc). And let's be honest, there's a major difference between Funimation's replacement of the Canadian cast (who had only really worked on the show for a grand total of 2-3 years) with their in-house one, and replacing the principle Evangelion cast, who have done work on the franchise for over 2 decades. Ditto can be said for Funimation's replacement of the 4kids dub for OP. Becuase EVA's original vas have been attached to the franchise this long, to many, such as myself, Spike Spencer IS Shinji, Tiffany Grant IS Asuka. If they were no longer voice acting, that would be one thing, but they ARE and even WANTED to return for the redub, and even went for an audition to get their roles back, but were still rejected. Just seems like a pretty shitty thing to do is all.
And by all means, I'm not putting down the EVA redub cast, or any other for that matter, it's not their fault they were just doing their jobs. It's Netflix's and their amateur VSI Studio's fault for not handling the property in the way they should have. Anyways, getting too far off-topic here and I apologize, I just wanted to give my two cents on how grevious it might be if Netflix were to take over ownership the OP anime at some point, especially as Zephray mentioned, they are co-producing the upcoming live action show.

Speaking of Evangelion, how long did Funimation take in releasing EVA 3.0? I heard that one Took YEARS to come out.

Well, it was dubbed and released in theaters back in 2013, a year after it was released in Japan, but Studio Khara, the ones who hold the master EVA license, claimed that the English dialogue did not match their "vision", so after lots of stalling and tweaking, a newly re-tooled version of the dub was released FOUR YEARS later, in 2016. So yes, Studio Khara probably had a great deal of control in this new redub of the series and many of the controversial decisions that were made. I don't think we'll ever quite know for sure.
But let's not forget that Toei has done a lot of meddling in the production of foreign dubs and translations, for better or worse (usually worse), and if it weren't for Funimation fighting back and being vigilant, we may have been stuck with crap like 'Zolo'. With Netflix not giving a crap, they would probably do everything Toei told them to do ,resulting in horrible, wonky translations and all.
-
There is a hell of a lot of conjecture in that post. We have no idea how much any company fights or doesn’t fight with Toei. And I don’t think comparing Netflix to 4KIDS Is accurate at all. 4kids cut entire episodes and re-wrote scripts entirely to be 90% jokes; I remember having a hard time even following what was happening in one piece because the scripts were so totally re-written.

If I recall, we were told back in 2008 by the brand manager at the time that they weren't able to change the name Zolo back to Zoro, and that we were going to be stuck with many of the 4kids terms, but fortunately they pushed back and got them fixed accordingly. I don't claim to know everything that happens/happened behind closed doors, but let's just say that Netflix would not go the extra mile like Funi did in situations like that.
Also, I wasn't comparing Neflix's dubbing practices with 4kids, that's apple's and oranges, but was comparing how they both seemingly care about anime solely from a financial perspective, and not a fan perspective.
-
Why Eva Movie 3.33 took so long to come was that after a prescreening at a con that had audiences laughing at serious moments. There was a EVA Japanese official in the audience and was mortified at what funi did to the dub so they forced them to redub to match their "vision" better.
-
I'm pretty sure that Netflix owning the live-action series is still a rumour at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if it did wind up on Netflix, but officially it's all a big question mark right now.
Even if Funi lost the rights, Toei would almost certainly be able to give new distributors the existing dub (in 2008 they must have seen this as a possibility), and I can't imagine Netflix re-dubbing 574 episodes unless they absolutely have to.BTW, here's a fun bit of perspective: as of 2018, Funimation has been dubbing One Piece for the majority of the anime's run.

It probably will, considering it's being made by Tomorrow Studios, which is making the Live Action Cowboy Bebop series for Netflix.
I don't think they would ever redub what's already been dubbed, as that would cost tens of millions even if done on the cheap, but would just start with a new cast and/or studio from wherever Funi may leave off. All just hypotheticals, but let's just hope Funi never lets go of the property for all our sakes.

Im actually DEFENDING Funimation in this post. Toei is second worst to Kahra in the "DO AS I SAY OR ELSE." Department.

Finally watched Nebulandia.
Hamburg is now voiced by Garret Storms (and sounds identical to Scott Freeman), and Tsuru is voiced by Pam Dougherty (who also voices Big Mom).
Mushroomconda was voiced by Erica Mendez, of all people. Hope this means she happened to be around to voice some other, more important character somewhere. Assuming any other One Piece dubbing is taking place.
Mike McFarland directed the dub, AND wrote the script for this special.
The only extra feature is a video interview/discussion between Ian Sinclair and Michael Johnson (Vice Admiral Komei).

While Funimation calls what their doing "simuldubs", there is still a period of time between the first episode airing in Japan and the English dub of that episode appearing on their service. For example a few episodes of Mob Psycho 100 season 2 had passed before the season premier was dubbed and currently episodes 17-20 of Attack on Titan season three are only available in a Japanese sub format.
Also I saw the trailer for the upcoming Saint Seiya reboot and the GCI isn't that bad. Some of the CGI anime that appears under the Netflix banner (like Hi Score Girl, Ajin, Knights of Sidonia, Ingress, etc.) aired on Japanese TV first before Netflix licensed it, which is also the same for live action adaptations (like Mob Psycho 100), which doesn't make it their fault. Also the CGI used for those examples are okay, Japan hasn't really caught up to DreamWorks or Pixar in terms of CGI or shows independent of the two like Nick's 2012 adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir. If you want a good example of bad GCI in anime two words: "Hand Shakers". A series so bad just about every anime-centric news or review site (as well as Youtubers that review anime) rate it among the worst anime made, and oddly enough it's one of the few Funimation titles not available on Funimation Now, for some reason.

Last week, I saw the first Amazon box set going for about $600. Now there's a new listing for one being sold for $68. It's too bad that a lot of OOP DVDs gets bought by scalpers who sell them for much more than they were worth originally. At least the price for this listing is MUCH more reasonable.

I’m not surprised Mike directed. My only little nitpick of the dub was that Komei’s first line when he introduces himself to the straw hats sounds too high. It didn’t sound like the rest of his lines, maybe because the actor hadn’t settled in yet. Not a big deal at all though.
I am surprised to hear that the voice of Tsuru also voices big mom. She does a good job making them sound very different.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It would be pretty bad if Netflix took over one piece, but I suppose it’s better than it being canceled entirely. No idea if they would work with the same cast or recast everyone. Probably the latter.

Funimation announced a "One Piece 20th Anniversary Panel" for Anime Expo.
Details are as follows:
Sunday, July 7
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | One Piece 20th Anniversary PanelSet sail with One Piece as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the anime. Join us as we discuss this epic anime with voice actor Patrick Seitz (voice of Franky), VIZ Media, Bandai Namco and other special guests. Plus, we’ll show never-before-seen videos, have Q&A with guests, giveaways and more!.
Not much here in the way of announcements, but I don't see anything to suggest us needing to worry about cancellation. Never before seen videos - sounds like out takes whilst recording.
-
Link isn't working
-
A 20th anniversary special with only Patrick Seitz in attendance? Doubt we'll hear any news at this one, then.
I bet we won't hear anything until closer to October.
-
I’m betting they will announce season 10 for October, since this is only one week before solicitations are announced.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It would be really weird for them to completely dodge the new episodes question at this thing.
-
Funimation announcements panel later today. I don't know if they will announce October's slate a little earlier, but if the rumours of a fall return for One Piece is true, then perhaps it is possible.

I figured they'd wait for the anniversary panel on the 7th, if they announce anything this week. Here's hoping, though.
-
Looks like the wait continues until Sunday. Fingers crossed for something.

Did they announce anything at all? Dunno where to look for info.
-
The only thing was announce that Funimation is going to streaming some of Rightstuf's shows.
-
Funimation is now selling the Walmart exculsive 20th anniversary boxset.
-
That just might be all we get for their 20th Anniversary at Anime Expo. Haha. We’ll see. Fingers crossed for Sunday.
-
-
The huge amount of anime news coming out of AE makes me hopeful for today.
And hopefully they can get the Blu-ray rights before Wano. I want to see that arc dubbed on Blu-ray.
-
Moment of truth in a few hours.
-
It should be starting any moment now. And it's time to play the waiting game for news. lol.
-
So, thus far, nothing new at all. And now, they have Sasaki-San and Dmitryi from Bandai Namco Entertainment, so I can't see anything new being announced here.
-
If they can’t announce the new season here, that means the October solicits next week will certainly be a bust too. Hopefully someone at least puts them on the spot at the Q&A.

Surely, someone needs to do us a solid here lol. Fingers crossed, there are still more than 20 minutes to go.
That's your lot. Nothing again sigh it seems as though it may be November now.
-
“Happy anniversary! Let’s not talk about whether the series is cancelled or not whatsoever!”

It's must be nice to still be still hopeful for something this year :/
I've checked out a while ago
-
Starting to think it's time to just start watching the subs again….. Wano's probably a good time to restart. Better to get used to the new weird animation filter now instead of when funimation never gets there.
-
At least the manga goes on
-
Yeah, if they can’t even announce anything now, I’m also doubtful we’ll get the dubbed episodes this year, despite the anniversary. I’m fuming. That said, I’d say the next chance we have of getting an announcement IS this year: October.
