Finally found the apk to update my app. The app runs decently but it still need some improvements for the vault to be more accessible: titles on the chapter list + maybe a preview pic next to it, read/unread indicator, "resume" option, favorites…
I hope they improve on those things in the near future + if they could also manage to bring the mature manga on the app like that Jeff guy hopes to do that would be perfect.
Yeah… I can't run the apk to update the app on my phone. I can use it to read the new chapters anyway, which is what I want. I can read the backlog if I feel like it on the PC, so screw it. But yeah, as of this moment, Batoto ... I mean, Mangadex has a better interface than the official app. I hope they can improve it in the future, but this is still the best thing western manga fans could have ever hoped for. Who could imagine this actually happening 10 years ago or so?
Now all japan needs to do is to put it out there digitally first, with magazine days later to stop early magazine leaks and we are gucci. :ninja:
I know I know, it won‘t happen cause it is still making a lot of money in paper form.

Woohoo. That's great to hear. Can't wait to check it out on next week's release
So what about us non-US citizens…?
Also, what's apforums going to do? Will there still be links posted to new chapters and spoilers before release or will we start following the official release. If I can actually read the chapters in EU I have no problem reading on another day of the week.
We're still hashing out the details, but we should have an official post on the matter shortly.
Basically for a trial period what we're going to try is letting the spoiler threads exist as they always have, and let that continue even after the scanlation comes out… and not make an official thread until the official version comes out 30 hours later.
Gonna have to test run how well it works. If the spoiler thread gets ALL the discussion and the official chapter is just dead, or the majority of people end up disliking the new system, we'll go back to the old method, we can always go back to the current system. But we need to give it a fair shake for at least a few weeks/months and try.
Everyone that wants spoilers and wants to read and discuss the bootleg chapters early will still be able to do so... but we hope the accessibility and higher translation quality of the official release, along with the reduced release window, will let us all go a little more legit and support the official release.
How many series do they have??? And how much does it cost?
I'd love to reread Yu Yu Hakusho, Black Cat, Beelzebub, Katokeyo Hitman reborn etc. in there official translations
Sorry if this has been answered, but is the regular Viz manga app sticking around? As in should I just keep it since I have all the weekly jumps going back to Alpha downloaded on there.

Is Shonen Jump not available digitally at all in Japan?
Reading OP from chapter 1 on Viz is so much fun.

They will theoretically have everything that's ever been translated into English, so all those series should apply… but it's a massive backlog so they're still uploading some of those. YuYuHakusho and Hunter X Hunter are not in the initial batch for whatever reason.
New chapters are free, backlog is 2$ a month.
There is some limit to that I think, (300 chapters a day or something like that?) but it's pretty huge and you'll never read that much in a month.
@LUFFY#1:
Is Shonen Jump not available digitally at all in Japan?
It is, but they wait until the official street date to release the chapters, just as Viz is doing. Because of printing and distribution, physical copies get out into the wild a few days before the official release. You could probably even find a couple small stores selling books on Fridays instead of mondays ahead of the street date.
This is a really nice app loving it so far no real performance issues yet.
Only real con I've found glaring so far is the zoom function is incredibly sensitive like even the tiniest motion will zoom it completely maxed and also the zoom goes back to default when you swipe to the next page. But at the same time I don't use the function either way (and I'm not sure anyone else would to begin with) but tried it just to try.
Let me get this straight:
If I load that app (which is unfortunately not available in non-english europe), I could read new chapter legally for free.
And if I wanted to re-read older ones, I just had to pay 2$ per month? That's not expensive.
I hope this becomes available soon in rest of Europe.
I'd prefer chapters on monday anyway instead of friday.
A good chapter could then make your whole week, if the week sucks otherwise.
I like it in concept, and it's neat to have so many series legally, but:
I'm going to sound negative, as app development has been one of my jobs, and oh boy I have complains about the app. I'm with the Shonen Jump one.
The download button, don't screw up with basic UI patterns, give me instant feedback that button was pressed. Like I press the flat image, it stays there, my home internet and my phone have a hate/hate relationship on weekdays (I should fix that…) but the point being, the download button needs instant feedback of "Yes, I am a button". Read button as well, but that transitions instantaneously.
Also, a way to go back to the series's chapter list from the "downloaded chapters" section, or let you prioritize the series or something, like I downloaded the first volume of Muji and Ryuji or so, and I wanted to download more for the train ride, I go to downloaded chapters and didn't found a way to go to the series index, so I look it, but dislexia struck and I was searching for Ryuji and Muji and nothing.
There is not enough feedback from changing from "normal scroll" to "fast scroll" besides the fact that I jumped from E to W or from chapter 400 to chapter 3, I have fat fingers and small hands so that might be the issue on activating it and not seeing the scroll bar.
Image quality, can you guys get something more crisp? It feels like it went down from the weekly magazine.
I hope those guys are saving in the cache/device most of the front page images, they re-load a ton.
QoL improvement: Mass download option. Like that Muji and Ryuji example, I still want to read the whole series, If I read by download, then I have to click 200 times? That is not going to make me buy a volume.
QoL: More from this author
QoL: let me blacklist Watsuki
Comments outside app:
I think this thread should be moved to general manga thread.
So, they Z/shippuden'd Yu Gi Oh, and that's why there are like 3 series of it. I knew that they Boruto'd it a long time ago tho.
(which is unfortunately not available in non-english europe)
I hope this becomes available soon in rest of Europe.
I'm just gonna quote myself from a page back:
Type in shonen jump apk in google and you will find a site called apkpure. It has the newest viz and shonen jump apps, and is save. Download it on android phones without any vpn and voila.
On ios you dont need vpn either. Just a us itunes account. Find a tutorial how to make one, download on the us app store and enjoy on your standard account without vpn.
Folks, how would you feel if, when Jump makes this switch, AP makes a push to try and start enforcing "same day as japan" release schedules and better support the official release?
We've discussed this before, on staff and in public, and the logistics have always been a nightmare. The english release was weeks behind the japanese originally, and then when it caught up there was the fact that you have to pay to get it, and lots of our readers are around the world and don't have access to it.
We still can't do anything about the worldwide readers part, but if it's going legit and free there's no reason for us to not try now at least. The bootleg editions will still beat it by a day or two, and that's where the worldwide readers will probably still have to go, but I think the difference between Friday morning and Sunday evening really isn't that huge. If we as a community embraced the change, and as a whole stopped supporting the bootleg scanlation sites while also pushing up Jump's numbers to show them that yes, there is interest in this and that is the way to go, that would only be a positive thing.
Spoiler stuff could still stay in the spoiler section, and anyone that wants to go hunt down the bootlegs can…. but this is probably the best chance we'll ever have to push and endorse the official release and encourage the transition, and add at least a pretense of credibility to everything we do.
Would you guys be up for it if we really tried to make a push and enforce the idea? Or is this just a pipe dream and everyone is going to read the bootleg to get it 30 hours sooner anyway? Would all the traffic just die and go to a different site entirely if we enforced this?
Honest feedback here guys.
I think you're just being lazy and worrying about your weekend traffick. This site has no reason to have spoiler threads for anything. No spoiler section, no spoiler threads. This is an english translation and english speaking forum, why would you still want bootlegggers, spoilers, and that kind of traffic and element on here, there's not one excuse, you're just being lazy. You could easily have stopped it forever ago by not allowing any scanlations or spoilers but you want the traffic, and even with the cheapeat conceivable simulpub, are still waffling
Also move this thread or keep it to one piece specifically, because this is a op forum, everyone weighing the merits of this by tslking aboit every series besides op is also waffling and making excuses, and you should move this thread oit of the manga and into general discussion, because you're plainly trying to find excuses to not support the most accessible possible publication of new op and it's entire archive

What's the plan regarding other Jump series? Are you only looking at doing this for One Piece, or is the goal to apply it to all series?
I could see something like requiring spoiler tags until the official release working, but in the other hand discussion is usually a lot less sustained for other series and it could really cut down on posts by accident.
All right, this change is in effect! See the announcement in the first post of the current spoiler thread (or don't, if you don't want to be spoiled, in which case wait until Friday PST for the official chapter thread, when the Viz chapter drops)

Requiring spoiler tags seems like the best bet at this point, since even the biggest (non-OP) series only have a single thread to start with.

Spoilers aren't "weekend traffic", they're throughout the week. We don't have advertisements on this site, and have to pay for upkeep, so if we have 100 visitors or 100,000 doesn't matter. "Weekend traffic flow" isn't the concern. I'm perfectly happy if all the conversation switches over to Sundays, and judging by the response to this thread, a lot of other people are too. I personally never go into the spoilers unless I have reason to as a mod, and that's been the case for me for years. I've also had a subscription to Jump for years and buy all the physical volumes, I've BEEN reading the Jump version on official release for a long time.
But for a lot of people and the community, that isn't necessarily the case. This entire thread is all about that fact and that discussion. The spoilers getting out and the scanlations ARE out there, on facebook and youtube and whatever else, and people enjoy talking about the bits and pieces we get slowly over the week. And a lot of people just don't care about the legality of it as long as they get it earlier, and there's nothing we can do about it except what we're doing, which is to hardcore encourage the official release and educate as to why the scan sites are bad.
If we lose all the lurkers that just jump on to read the spoilers and don't post anything, or only make a two posts a year, I personally have zero problem with that. We don't need the traffic of thousands of silent extras who contribute nothing to the community. But, sometimes, those silent extras turn into posters after visiting for a while, and we DO want more of those folks around. If the community dries up completely and moves entirely to other places, so we only have 12 people on this site, that's not really ideal either.
We're doing the best we can to find a middleground and experimenting. Hopefully the official release following takes off and people are okay with it, and it gets supported officially in other places and the general culture shifts until the scanlators stop even bothering to do it because there's no profit in it anymore to do it ahead of time… and that's a win for everyone.

h.
i think it should be put elsewhere too because those who don't read spoiler will create a thread before the official release for sure.
Since I don‘t look into the spoiler thread, are they getting a lot of scanned pages or just some panels and text summarizing the content?
Why would you ruin the experience of reading a translated chapter in good quality for some shoddy low quality spoilers?
Why would you ruin the experience of reading a translated chapter in good quality for some shoddy low quality spoilers?
Depends on what you enjoy about the experience.
For myself, I'm a mystery novel fan, and spoilers (even small summaries and a few LQ panels) tap into that very same urge to "piece together the full story out of a handful of disparate clues" that any devoted mystery fan develops. Theorizing is fun…we do it in the context of what individual chapters mean to the bigger picture of the overarching series all the time, but that's usually far slower to pay off.
The thing is I have to pay to get the membership. Don't have what I need to get it.
Random question.
However, will Ultimate Muscle be in the backlog? I have been trying to read this series for years now, but it has never been scanalated and all the volumes are expensive as hell.
@joekido:

The business model just changed, free simulpub, paid backlog.
Inside the Viz Zone (Most english speaking countries) you can get it, no strings attached.
From outside the Viz Zone: I coasted of a friend who did the tech stuff and gave me the apk, but the steps were:

I don't think I've seen this in the thread already, but there's a schedule up on the website: https://www.viz.com/shonen-jump-chapter-schedule
It goes a few weeks in advance, I wonder if we'll be able to get information on breaks before they get officially announced at the end of the preceding chapter, or if they'll just update it after announcements in the future.
Hello everyone, I have a question.
I am looking forward to start reading the official releases with the app but I have the following problem:
I'm from EU so what I did was download the apk (from a website I really have no idea whether or not it is trustworthy) and installed it without problem. I looked through the app for a bit and checked if I could read One Piece in particular seeing I have no other manga-interests anymore and I could read chapter 927, no problem so far.
Yesterday though I got a push notification on my phone that there was an update for the app but when I tried downloading it, the app says it isn't available in my country. NowI checked the non-updated app again and I can still read chapter 927 but I have no clue whether I'll be able to read the newer chapters and apparantly other people from EU seem to need to use a VPN while I have nothing of the sort…
Is the update necessary for reading the simulpub? If yes, can anyone recommend a good free VPN so I can push the update?
I can't even install the newer version of the app, the apk file doesn't open on my phone for some reason and even with the VPN, the app on Google Play says it's incompatible with my phone. But the older version still allows me to read the chapters anyway, so it's cool. In principle, even if you don't update the app you can read the new chapters as they come out, so don't worry.
If you want to read on your PC's browser, for example, or really want that VPN for other purposes, maxterdexter above posted some links already. I use Hola! VPN which has worked wonders for me over the years, although I'm not sure how safe it really is in terms of information privacy. There must be a reason for it to be free, so I'm a bit sceptical about it, but I still use it nonetheless. It works well!

Okay, so I tried to sign up, but every fucking time I clicked the "I'm not a robot" checkbox, the Captcha does NOT show up. This doesn't happen in any other website I go to that has Captcha.
Must a man be denied of trying to catch up to Act-Age?
EDIT: Damn, looks like it's not my PC. I tried it on my phone and even my PS4 browser, the captcha still won't show up.
should we report all fiction being a robot ?
so by curiosity how many threads had to be deleted in then end :-)
Finally managed to become a subscriber to this English Shonen Jump app thanks to apk file. Now I can officially enjoy both English and Japanese digital Jump.
I'd say montlhy price 1.99$ is generous compared to Japanese version (about 8$). Maybe I don't need to visit manga cafes in my neighborhood for the time being given this Viz app offering us tons of manga chapters unlike Japanese Jump app.
One change I like that doesn't really have anything to do with the new release format is that the translators and letterers for the English versions are now credited at the start of the new chapters. Translating especially seems to be a bit of a high effort, low visibility job. Good that the people doing it are having their names put where they'll be seen.
Overall, the new format is really nice, and seems to run a lot more smoothly than the old Jump reader. Putting exact dates for the next release at the end of each chapter is good too. I was surprised to find the SBS pages and other volume extras in the older chapters. I would have figured they'd save those to motivate people to actually buy the books. My only real complaint is that there should be a way to go automatically to the next chapter when reading through an archive. It's a pain having to click on the button after moving through the whole thing with the arrow keys.

I had some problems with the Captcha as well…
Eventually got it to work, but I wish I could say I knew how. Basically just walked away for a while and tried again later. :/
YAY, I FINALLY GOT IN!

Wait, they don't have Act-Age chapters from 7 to 39? Huge gap of chapters in Kimetsu no Yaiba too. Damn, it's like those chapters got Void Century'd.
You have access to everything VIZ has ever published in English! Except that they never published those chapters of Act-age, or Kimetsu, or Jujutsu Kaisen in English. We have to wait for the volume releases to have access to those chapters. Yeah, I was disappointed too, but thinking about it, it never made sense to expect it in the first place.
I see, thanks. Guess for the missing chapters I'll have to make do with scanlations. I'm keeping my subscription, though. 2 dollars a month is a steal.
Hey Stephen/CCC,
Any chance they are going to bring back the Nihongo lessons with this new format? I really liked it and think it would be awesome to have it applied on a chapter by chapter basis.
It could also potentially be used to explain puns, character name double meanings, or general translator notes that might be interesting.
Plus you could always just put that authors comment on the page as well.
No clue. Haven't heard anything about that!
Do they have to add the completely superfluous and unnecessary "One Piece" over the Japanese text on top of the already-in-English One Piece logo? It looks goofy enough on the print volumes, but now it's on the chapter title pages online as well.
Are they by chance going to keep publishing one punch man? It has been almost 4 months since that last OPM chapter and they dont have the backlog on it free.

This. They’re behind over 500 pages, not including revisions. I’m about to jump to scanlations.
And I’m confused. Are new OP chapters coming out on Friday, Sunday, or Monday now?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, uh, what should I be reading that I now have access to as a paid member?
And I’m confused. Are new OP chapters coming out on Friday, Sunday, or Monday now?
My understanding is that the official release is now on Sundays, with the limited exceptions of events like national holidays that get the Japanese publication date shifted around (as happened last week, which is why the most recent chapter showed up on a Friday).
Thing is that we have been seeing this end of year schedule for like 10 years. General public is going to be confused.

Yeah, they really should have waited till January to do this push. The holiday schedule is chaos and confusing.
The new website is confusing me with all of the "Subscribe, subscribe, subscribe!" when I already have a subscription that carried over from my Weekly Shonen Jump subscription.
I have a question, but forgive me if I don't describe this properly: Does anyone know if there is a way to get the manga full-screen (on a PC) without the toolbars like we could with the old WSJ? I read the new One Piece chapter today and went full-screen but it had a toolbar bordering the top and an empty gray banner bordering the bottom. I wouldn't be bothered so much by this, but it did seem to be covering the view of the top of the manga pages. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
The old WSJ format had a smaller one that would disappear when your mouse went inactive, but this one doesn't go away.
So assuming I get a VPN .. can I use my Credit Card to subscribe? Since the billing address will be from a country that is not allowed to view the manga it may not be allowed?
I recommend using PayPal.

It can be removed using "inspect element" and delete that toolbar.. unfortunately you will have to do that for every chapter. Hopefully they'll fix it or someone can make a browser plugin/greasemonkey script to remove it.
It was annoying me as well.. I just zoom and move around using the cursor.. there is also a bug when you reach the end of a page while zooming in(bottom left corner), you can fix that bug by zooming in again.
