Ugh….I'm upset at myself for finally being tipped into the 'Pedro might be dead' side of the seesaw.
That panel with Sanji and the wind is...if Oda backpedals on that, damn him.
And you know what? He totally can.
Mom took those years of his life and, if she hasn't used them, she might be able to give them back. (Naturally this depends on whether she can store years or if they just age as usual) But yeah, for the time being I think I'm going to believe that...Pedro...is dead? And...stakes...exist? In One Piece? I'm not that big of an optimist so if he backpedals in this I'll probably cry for a minute ^o^
It's a sweet end isn't it?
It really is sweet and...that pretty much sums it up because it's hard to feel really pumped about the immediate results of this arc.
This is like...it's almost a negaverse version of his arcs thus far in New World.
It had a strong start, great cast, interesting scenarios, events that threw me for a loop, but it completely lacked a solid ending.
Compare that to Dressrosa which is 90 chaps of “I DON’T KNOW WHAT I GOT MYSELF INTO HERE!!!!”-and 10 or so chaps of SOLID GOLD conclusion and wrap-up.
Here I find myself asking, “What did we gain out of this? What did Sanji gain out of this?”
Ignoring the inevitable payoffs down the road
We got a backstory for Sanji.
We got confirmation that Jinbei wishes to join the Strawhats and that Luffy views Jinbei as a crew member.
uh….what else? Not…really much else…we actually lost more this arc than we gained. That’s in terms of characters and readers.
Thus a ‘Bad End Musical’.
I can only assume what Oda means there is, it’s what we traditionally call a ‘sad’ ending. Just look at the post-arc meal. There isn’t a feast. They just have a ‘meal’.
The arc makes sense.
The arc is relatively tight in terms of story.
The arc has many interesting characters and scenarios.
But the conclusion is largely empty.
It’s not terrible as a result of that but it also doesn’t end on a high note despite the Strawhats being (more or less) successful in doing what they came to do and even if the ending feels empty, everyone must realize how AMAZING what they pulled off is.
They literally rode into Emperor territory, beat them when they were set up to be trapped, and got away with it.
They…also left a lot of casualties in their wake.
That will come back, but for now…Yeah… Great arc, but it can’t be an AMAZING ARC until we see its real conclusion.
-
Man I loved how the arc ended, sorta reminds me of Empire in a way.
The heroes did win in the end, they got out but the suffered some losses and some stuff is just up in the air and clearly not everyone is happy with the result.
Vinsmokes are honestly in the worse position, while the sun pirates are bad they can always escape to the water Germa has no such luxury and I don't really see a way they make it to the Kings Meeting, constant people are either hurt or there condition unconfirmed like what happend to Pekoms? I don't think he can get out of this unscathed.
Katakuri and Brulee had a sweet bonding moment and I liked how Katakuri asked how strawhat was.
Pudding stuff got to me man, her remembering moments through out the arc and over time as we see her in the present she clearly heart broken and she slowly gets worse and worse, then we see that she did have a tender moment and a great page of it looking like a film reel and her removing the memory of the kiss, crying all alone being the only one that remembers her heartfelt goodbye to Sanji ;-;
Honestly Impel Down is the arc closest in tone to WCI ending.
What did you think about the Pudding, Katakuri and Brulee stuff Greg?
-
Wow, the comparison with Empire Strikes Back is so true hahaha

It certainly helps that the one of the protagonists announced the person was dead and they didn't show up in the EXACT SAME CHAPTER like Pell and Pedro. Oda has set it u conclusively enough so his " I don't want people too be too sad during endings" idea isn't violated. Even Carrot herself while upset about it tries to makes a clear effort to move on for sanji's sake. Which was really nice I think this is the first actual talking between them ive seen them do. Plus it directly confronts an Issue Robby had with Pedros death, IE that Sanji would feel bad about it and has carrot tell him it's not his fault, which is also a nice tie-in to how sanji felt trapped by his actions affecting others in the beginning of the arc. Oda can always bring people back but this feels deliberately closed and not in a " closed but I love this character a lot so did you actually think mr 2 was gonna stay dead" way.
But I agree that this arc has a bit of a hollow ending to it, no thanks due to Jinbe staying back, luffy being operated on by chopper and the lack of dialogue in most of the scenes. Gives me a distinctly water 7 feel in terms of how the arc sort of ended, but considering what happened here I kind of like it a bit. Sure we don't get the payoffs now and that's frustrating for a few of the set ups but I think on it's own this arc certainly tells enough a story. Maybe Elbaf can improve it or something but right now as it is, I'd still say I'd put it 6th place on my arcs list. On the same relative tier list as Alabasta or Marineford but with those a little higher.
Sidenote I know the one piece podcast did an arcs of consequence duo of episodes and they claimed to have lists from all the site members so did you happen to submit a list. If not it's cool, it'd be a bit much of me to demand one right now when they need plenty of time to think about but if you happened to have something from that time already compiled I'd be interested in seeing it. It's interesting to see from a perspective of trying to seek out patterns and just getting a feel on what someone liked the most. Again if you don't have one or have an apathetic feeling towards them because you consider one piece one complete story that's fine I just figured I ask.

Honestly Impel Down is the arc closest in tone to WCI ending.
What did you think about the Pudding, Katakuri and Brulee stuff Greg?
Yeah to me this was the closest to Impel Down but when that ended there was no reverie and wano "meat" between the two buns of whole cake Island. We knew that things would be continued immediately when it came to Ace, whereas with Big Mom she doesn't know about the kids or caramel, pudding and katakuri are still there, the island is in shambles. Pekoms, the germa, and vinsmoke are in a bind. Pound never met chiffon. Smoothie and Snack didn't do much with Snack essentially showing up to remind us he exists. Lots of things we will have to wait around 3 years for and they do lose a little bit of hype due to the time. But I still have faith in Oda in rebuilding other things around the BMP so they'll be important besides replaying the exact same role.
Also IDK if anyone else thought of this but there are 3 cake covered poneglyphs out in the open. :ninja:
-
You know what there may be a silver lining with Jimbei staying behind at the moment. What if he gets to go to Reverie with Germa? Jimbo gets to interact with Vivi and something something at least 2 Straw Hats are present like after the Saboady separation.
-
I don't see how the Vinsmokes can realistically make it there in time.
-
Sidenote I know the one piece podcast did an arcs of consequence duo of episodes and they claimed to have lists from all the site members so did you happen to submit a list.
I don't know what that is so probably not? But maybe I did at one point?
What did you think about the Pudding, Katakuri and Brulee stuff Greg?
Pudding stuff is as expected.
Katakuri and Brulee. I don't like Brulee to begin with because it seems really sloppy that we're supposed to believe she's younger than Katakuri.
I know for a fact that Oda had the birthing order set in stone a long time ago. (Mistakes that occurred were just that, honest mistakes) But I feel like she was intended to be older but felt like he had to change that for their relationship. It feels to convenient, not well-planned. I don't have any proof for that, it's just how it feels.
So anything that happens with her leaves a poor taste in my mouth and while I like this simple interaction between them, especially Katakuri's reaction, it feels like it came from serendipity, not careful planning.
But I agree that this arc has a bit of a hollow ending to it, no thanks due to Jinbe staying back
Really just this. If he joined it would make things feel a little bit more whole. I'm not saying there won't be a big payoff, but as far as this story goes it doesn't help it.

but what makes you think she was supposed to be older than Katakuri, all the interactions since Katakuri's introduction allude to his Big Brother personality, and it doesn't help that we knew the order of birth for these 2 the moment they were introduced.
is it because of her design, if so, then that doesn't make sense, specially because Oda could've easily changed her design just before he introduced her (with the birth order) if he thought that was necessary, and it won't be the first character for him to create prototype designs for.
I think Oda just sticked wjth this look because of Hansel and Gretel's witch that kidnapps children in the forest and then cooks them, as we so Brulee intending to boil Carrot.
It's not like Oda has never designed characters that doesn't look like their age, Bavarois is a very recent example for this.
I'm still pretty interested to here the reason why you think her relationship with Kataluri wasn't planned. -
I'm still not on the Pedro is dead camp.
I wasn't sure how that could work but Greg, you just made me see it. The fact that Big Mom has part of his soul fixes everything. He may not get his body back but he will show up one way or another.
That way is sacrifice still "counts" but doesn't stop him from returning, kinda like Brook's backstory. It feels weird to me that Oda would kill a character like that outside the climax of an arc.
And I do like the arc ending in a bitter sweet way, in order to remind the characters and the readers that messing with an Emperor will always leave a scar, but I also feel like it lacks some sort of bow to wrap it up properly.
-
The moment the Perospero fake out happened is when I thought “hm, maybe there’s something more to this character’s death”.
-
I want to believe Pedro is dead. I would LOVE to really truly believe it. Oda has even handled it differently than how he usually does with chracters regularly commenting on it.
Especially since others like Pekoms weren't mentioned at all and fall more into Oda's usual vague "they're gone as long as its dramatic, but lets not dwell on it" thing.
But his habits since Alabasta just make it impossible for me to believe. Especially when this arc is only done with its Part 1, and there was no body, and at least a handful of obvious outs to save him. (And a handful of stupid ones like quickly replacing the ship.) Argh.
Really wish he'd just had one or two more real deaths along the way, or Oda had actually shown a body, so I could feel anything in the emotion he's trying to pull here. Even just one or two more (coughPellcough, coughtonguebitingpiratecough) would make so much difference.
At this point I assume we're going to have Pekoms show up in Wano or Elbaf, and when everyone asks how he got out, we reveal Pedro right behind him who talked him out of Sulong. Like, 2 or 4 years from now.
Or you know, Greg introduced Oda to Game of Thrones and now everyone is going to die.

Since pekoms didnt fully transform oda could always be like " he didnt die because he didnt complete his transformation. The pedro stuff was more about why pekoms was moved to act to help luffy and why pedro actually came with pekoms rather than solely setting up a plot thread with pedro.

Oh come on. We, intellectuals in Greg's thread, knows that just bad manga-reading on those peoples' part.

Yeah, Brulee's words should have been obvious enough. But man, some people are just really stubborn, saying things like "KATAKURI DIDN'T LOSE! LUFFY WAS NOT THE VICTOR BECAUSE KATAKURI LOST ON PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!".
-
If anything, the only argument I'd consider to be valid is the fact he decided to take a snack during the fight :D
As for Brulee's words, I'd say that mangastream felt more clear than jaiminis this time around. -

Oh alright, would you ever considering releasing something like that in the future or heck even here if you had something recent stashed away. I just hear you speak a lot on the little things oda does in recent arcs and how they compared to older ones and how oda works. However your macroscopic takes are usually only for the recent arcs so a list would be interesting in seeing how you weigh the entireties of arcs in comparison to each other.
-
I don't believe Pedro is dead but I will say I was surprise he didn't come back for the end of the arc. I was sure mentionning he is sleeping inside the boat meant that Sanji wouldn't be able to handle Pedro dying to save him and he would come back to stop Sanji from blaming himself. Plus that panel where Sanji declared him dead in this last chapter was so somber and simple that for a moment I truly consider he might be dead.
But no I son't believe Pedro is dead. For him to be dead Oda would need to have planned it and if he planned it I would have expect it to be much more impactful.
-
Pedro aside, what about Pound? His death wasn't given as much focus, but he was such a minor character in the grand scheme of things that I'm not sure how he could be added back into the story now that the arc is over.
-
He could maybe come into play if Chiffon and Lola ever reunite. I'm not sure they'd even be particularly relevant ever again aside from Chiffon's proximity to Bege, so maybe slap it into a cover story. Unless Bege wants to attend Big Mom round 2.
-
I was already at a complete loss regarding Pound before the arc ended, as he had pretty much no decent theories going for him compared to Pedro. But ultimately, didn't seem right for Oda to ever go there considering his goal. Now I'm just… I dunno. Whatever happens happens I guess.

Not having his bond with Carrot be revealed so briefly last minute.
-
@Count:
Not having his bond with Carrot be revealed so briefly last minute.
If that actually ends up being the last we ever see of said relationship, I'd agree I suppose.
-
Pound may be alive just because he's an irrelevant character whose death is not important for the plot. I expect to see him someday as a figure in the background at least, just like Moscato in chapter 902.
-
Planned it how exactly?
I would have expect a bit more focus on Pedro on 3-4 chapter on how much great it is to have hi around. Definitely more bonding with Carrot. His death felt more like a let's spice things up kind of deal rather then we've been building to the farewell of this character.
-
Greg, a lot of people think Katakuri lost on purpose just because he deliberately fell backwards. Any thoughts on this?
So, did Katakuri lose on purpose?
No, he seems to have been legit unconscious.
Did Katakuri fall back on purpose?
It very much seems that way. There's no reason for their private conversation to be an unreliable source of information.
So while Katakuri did pass out, he also allowed himself to fall backward because, probably, he wanted to know what it felt like to lose.
This just seems to add to his rivalry with Luffy and makes their futures together even more interesting!
I'm legit surprised that Katakuri intentionally fell back. How it was drawn the argument could have been made either way but that does not seem to be the case.
Regardless of the intention, the fact remains that he didn't lose on purpose. Luffy might have been the last man standing. And if that's ALL that matters in a fight to you, fine, Luffy won. No questions asked. After all, he did walk away. But lest we forget, Katakuri was on his legs before Luffy and could have delivered a final blow. Likewise, we could argue that Luffy, who regained consciousness earlier than Katakuri, could have summoned the power to dodge a death blow. The fact remains…. THESE TWO GUYS RESPECT EACH OTHER and are looking forward to facing each other again. That's really what you should be getting out of this.
Pound will be back. His family will have a reunion!
-
It's kind of a shame Lufy and Katakuri didn't meet much earlier, he'd have been fun as a recurring rival figure. (Obviously scale down his power if he was earlier on… and I guess in a different crew.)

Column 101!
https://one-piece.com/special/greg/detail/20180425_0879.html?l=en
Wait what!? Column 101!? What happened to Column 100!?
-
In paragraph #3 of the english version, I think that should read "Every cell in Pekoms' body wants to avoid what he’s doing right now,…".
Unless Greg is in on something we don't know yet about a certain not-so-dead jaguar mink ? :ninja:
-
Wait what!? Column 101!? What happened to Column 100!?
Working on something special. Takes time.
I think people here will be pleasantly surprised.
Thanks seafarer. Not sure of the place right now but I imagine you're correct.

Question Greg, how much of this last chapter did you see coming???
Sanji getting a raid suit???
sanji getting a higher bounty than zoro???
Luffy being named the fifth emporor??? -
^Luffy is not named the fifth yonkou.
-
Yeah, he pretty much is. They haven't said the word, "Gokou" yet but the title and contents literally describe him as the a 'Fifth Emperor'.
5番目の皇帝
is literally
'The Fifth Emperor'
and the word 皇帝 or koutei contains the 'kou' (皇) from 'yonkou' or '四皇'.
So yes, no question that Luffy has disrupted world order and been named the Fifth Emperor.
NOW he can take them down.
Do-n!
-
Wait, the official release date for the chapter is May 7th. Is it okay for you to comment on chapter 903, Greg?
-
Chapter 903 is out in Japan.
Here's my current stance for anyone looking for clarification.
I have no qualms browsing spoilers to see reactions.
My articles are already completed by the time even the fastest illegal scanlations are available.I used to feel comfortable commenting on spoilers because people weren't looking/expecting me to comment on them and therefore people weren't visiting a thread to get my take on them. As that has changed, so has my current stance on commenting on spoilers.
In this thread, I used to comment on spoilers but then people started coming here and asking my thoughts on it prior to official release which goes to say, my presence was attracting people to spoiler material. Asking me questions or my opinion isn't wrong. So I'm not upset or anything★. But it does mean that if people are coming here for the purpose of discussing material prior to release, I currently will refrain from commenting prior to release.
On Twitter, where I have a large following that reads on official release only, come Monday in Japan, I refrain from discussing the chapter on Twitter as a courtesy. However, given that the chapter is legally available, there's nothing wrong with me discussing it.
However, when it comes to this location, even Monday on Japan, you must click through to this specific thread on this specific board to find my postings and therefore, I have no qualms about discussing the chapter here before its English release because whatever I'm discussing is based off of having read the Japanese version.
So yeah, that's my current stance on the topic and since Chapter 903 is released today in Japan, I have no problem talking about it here.
:)

Ah, seems like I was mistaken about the release date. My bad.

Greg I and many others were strongly against sanji getting a raid suit as a way to catch up to the rest of the monster trio since he hates germa and it kind of goes against the whole message we thought he was trying to do with sanji where he would be just as good if not greater than them thanks to hard work, you know classic shonen themes and all, and this chapter was kind of disappointing to some of us. I can certainly understand oda wanting it because he thinks it's super cool and thinking that it isn't backpedaling on sanji proving himself because niji gave it to him. But I still feel conflicted on it being awesome vs it making sanji too reliant on his family for getting stronger.

Based on some of the discussion I've seen, I wonder if people aren't kind of getting ahead of themselves with this whole raid suit business?
Sanji has some of the firmest (some might say "inflexible") principles in the crew. To the point that, there's this popular notion that for Sanji to progress as a character, he must forfeit them or abandon them! But personally, I don't think it's very likely. Given how strongly he feels about it–and how thoroughly Sanji rejects everything to do with his family--I don't expect we'll see Sanji in a raid suit anytime soon. If ever.
