Hahaha, the mere though of one of the okama being based on Gon from HXH just made my day.
Hahaha ha.

I'm just wondering, how does a guy that has spent most of his time creating One Piece had the time to watch/read/study everything that supposedly influences his characters?

That's why he needs breaks.

Sorry to bump this thread, but we're reading Journey to the West in my Asian Journeys class, and I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Sun Wukong and Luffy today (meaning i was sitting in class when i suddenly thought "shit wait WHAT NO"). The main things being both are selfish, greedy (less so on Luffy's part, but still) like to eat a lot (this just a general shonen trope), care greatly for the people they like/respect (again shonen trope, and also he's the protag), and are very powerful and are able to take down individuals who are known throughout the story for their power (again, he's the protag though), but the most similar trait between them is their value of freedom. I can think of plenty differences between the two though (Sun Wukong fears death, Luffy does not) and a lot of similarities can be written off as general shonen tropes, but I at least think that Luffy's surname was inspired by Sun Wukong.
-
Well, Son Goku was based on Sun Wukong and Dragon Ball influenced Oda a lot, so it's no surprise if Luffy shares traits with the latter (and no, I haven't read Journey to the West)
-
Journey to the West is one of the greatest classics in japanese literature.
So Oda being inspired or influenced by it is a given.
Iam even certain we find a hell lot of more references, but for that there are more suited people than myself around. -
The old admirals were based in momonosuke tale.
Oda said somewhere that he inteded for the new admirals to be based on jorney to the west, but changed his mind (Kizaru still being the monkey and adding kappa and pig, he draw the pig one in the sbs)

I feel that the new theme for admirals will be physics and astrophysics. Light, gravity and time perhaps…
I heard somewhere (on this forum I think) that green is the color representing time, just like purple is supposed to represent gravity.

Clown make-ups are nothing unique, true.
So I'm guessing u don't see the resemblance here?

I did see the resemblance, but even TDK's Joker's makeup isn't exactly unique. Kefka's makeup is very similar to the Joker's, and the former came first.

I've always thought that DoFla's personality is kinda based from the Joker, so I like thinking that the older brother got the personality while the younger brother got the looks.
Am I the only one who thinks that?

No you're right.
I think the same. Doflamingo with the alias of Joker has a brother and he looks similar to the joker but is the opposite, whereas Joker (Dofla) is really the EVIL one.

there's not thread for similarities between kishi and oda so here's something real quick

I know the chances of this are next to zero but two American movies Oda might have seen as a kid may have sparked a bit of the series' elements:
Crack in the World: Much of the movie is irrelevent to OP save the ending. After using a thermonuclear device as part of a scientific and economic experiment to draw energy from Earth's magma, the protective barrier between the Earth's crust and the magma layer begins to crack wider and wider until it threatens to destroy the world. Efforts to divert the crack by detonating high explosives into key volcanic sites caused the crack to ultimately form a ring andshoot up chunk of the the Earth's crust into outer space like a cork from a bottle, forming a new moon. Possible inspiration for the knock-up stream & Jaya being shot up into the stratosphere.
Diary of a Madman: All is going well for a kind, peaceful magistrate whom is respected as a just arbiter of law & order by the community until one day he is visited by malevolent enitity, invisible yet corporeal and part of a mysterious race called the "horla" from another dimension. He mocks how weak and fragile humanity is and how easily the evil in their hearts can be manipulated. As part of a test to prove if the magistrate grow "love where none exists" within an opportunistic common-born woman whom he became recently infatuated. If he wins, the horla will leave. Despite the magistrate seeming to have won the test, on the eve of their wedding, the horla takes sadistic pleasure in possessing the magistrate's mind and forcing him to brutally murder her. The horla decided it would prefer to stay until his will is completely broken. Either the film or the short story may have inspired the King Riku/Doflamingo "test of kingship"

Rewatching The Road Warrior before seeing Fury Road, I had a vague bit of deja vu with Lord Humungus' mask before realizing it reminded me of Pica's. Obviously the perpendicular bars on the Humungus mask are just edges of the metal, whereas they are discrete spikes on Pica's mask, but that could still be a bit of inspiration for the design (although it doesn't jive with the musicians theme for the other execs).
Hard to say whether this really had any direct inspiration for Pica–there are a million variations on that general style of bondage-suit warrior/muscle man out there (many with actual shoulder spikes, and probably plenty in Japan that most of us have never seen), but it seemed worth mentioning. And it should be noted that a good number of those other musclemen characters are second- and third-degree knockoffs of The Road Warrior designs anyway, most famously the WWF "Road Warriors".

I would agree that there is some root in the Mad Max universe in some of these character designs. Pica definitely seems like one of them.
In that same line, I believe the character of "Master Blaster" from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome was the inspiration for Byrnndi World & his brother in the 3D2Y Special. I understand that is an anime-only product, but Oda has been officially credited for designing that particular character.

Wow blood transfusions used as drama were invented by Eiichiro Oda, wow whoda thunk.

That should go into the Christopher Nolans Inspirations for the Dark night rises thread.
Not the Oda's INSPIRATION for One Piece thread.

I think there may be a chance that Oda may have also had some inspiration from the Yul Brynner movie Kings of the Sun within some of the Noland flashback.
-The premise is similar, in which the remnants of a Mayan kingdom resorts to crossing the Gulf of Mexico into a new land where they run into North American Indians and the kings/chiefs learn to become close friends by making tough choices.
-Calgara's people is a mix of these two people's lifestyles, that of Mayans and North American Indians.
-The Mayan traditional belief in ritualistic sacrifice on altars is openly questioned in the new land and, with the wisdom of Black Eagle's obsrevation, the Mayan king realizes that such sacrificial offerings don't affect what the bounty of the land offers.
-Both peoples at one point realize there is much that can be learned from one another in peaceful co-existance, both scientifically and philosophically. Also the aspect of one being treated as an actual god, while a hollow one in the movie (each sacrifice is treated as a god before his blood is spilled), may have has some inspiration on the whole God-Enel element. It also ties into the element of the Mayan god (in the film) being greedy and fearful.
-
That sort of story is incredibly common. Especially in a "Europeans meet Native Americans" context like with Norland and Calgara.
-
It suddenly hit me… That lion from the Buggy arc? His name is Richie. As in Lionel Richie. I should have seen that earlier.
-
I've always thought that DoFla's personality is kinda based from the Joker, so I like thinking that the older brother got the personality while the younger brother got the looks.
Am I the only one who thinks that?
Sorry. I thought his look was based a little on Ace Freely of Kiss.

It wouldn't surprise me, but he's also probably a mash up of heavy metal costume riffs and just straight gladiator designs.
I do think that Oda did a sleeker version of this little fellow for his mask, to reinforce the travelling through stone idea. -

Could Enel's clothes be inspired by Xande from FFIII? I know when Jump had all their authors draw for the FF series, Oda did FFIII.

Isn't that just baggy pants?

If anything invented baggy pants, it's Dragonball.
