If you voted for Trump, after having a year and a half to see what he was about, sorry, you get to live with people being disgusted by you. All the suffering to come, econimically, morally, in actual lives lost, handicapped technology, ruined environment, and regression of social progress by decades, is on those people shoulders and I really don't care if they feel put upon for being called out about it or if it pushes them "further to the left", they're not the target audience that's going to be convinced anyway. They did the thing, they get to live with it. Its the half the population that didn't vote at all that needs reaching, not the Trump voters. If you were in the middle enough, undecided enough that it was an either/or decision for you to begin with, then you aren't about to be convinced over to the right by anything other than having someone charismatic on the ballot because you clearly didn't care at all about policy and just vote R automatically anyway.
You not only condoned a greedy sexist racist incompetent con man predator, you "endorsed" him. And he might very well, no exaggeration, bankrupt the country, ruin trade with all our neighbors, kill thousands if not millions of americans through various initiatives, and start WW3. Bush was awful, but I never seriously heaped those kinds of worries on him.
Halfheartedly going now, a month in "oh, I didn't know he was going to be bad" is insincere at best, and "I don't understand why people have a problem with me now!" or "I didn't know he was SERIOUS about the wall he talked about for 18 months!" or "I had no idea the republicans really meant to kill my healthcare when it's been their only agenda for the last 8 years!" gets zero sympathy.
Someone on my feed posted a thing, and it sums up my feeling on it all pretty well.
My liberal friends keep telling me I have to have an open mind and hear the true motivations of Trump supporters and have empathy for the hopelessness that they feel. I've done this.
Every single time a Trump supporter shows up on my social media feed or on the news I listen deeply and discover that they all exist on a "Worthless Ignoramus So Just Hurry Up and Die" spectrum. The low end of this range is the low-key blissfully ignorant dude who voted for Trump because "hey man, they're all the same, let's give the other side a chance now" who has never had to experience the negative consequences of such a thing so he thinks there are none. He also has never experienced racism or sexism so he thinks that those things don't exist and liberals who talk about it are ridiculous.
The high end of this range are the out and out wackos who listen to his nonsensical press conference tirades and say, "I don't know what it means but it sounds right." They think he will do things he NEVER said he would. One guy I encountered thinks that Trump promised to take international aid away from Iran and rain it down on poor people in Michigan instead, like some liberal fever dream. They've constructed a fictional world where whatever they personally think a president should do for them individually will happen under Trump. When presented with incongruities and lies from Trump they literally shrug.
The middle of the range covers all the various psychos, nut bags, racists, and blithering idiots you see on the news, along with the spineless "conservative" pundits like Jeffrey Lord who stammer their way through justifications for every asinine thing the president says no matter how far afield from reality he's strayed, presumably because they falsely believe this support will somehow further a noble conservative agenda, but most likely they're just racist morons themselves who want the country to be all white and Christian like they think it used to be.
I don't count as "Trump supporter" the various people who reluctantly voted for him because they just couldn't bring themselves to vote for a Clinton, who have been the right wing super villains for over 30 years. I understand that this would be like asking Superman to vote for Lex Luthor. These are Trump voters, but did nothing before the election to help the man win, have been critical since, and vocally hope that it unravels soon so they can get on with a Mike Pence presidency. I don't like this position – I think it's irresponsible to even vote for Trump, but at least it's not ideological support. These people will simply vote for the next normal Republican (if we ever get one again) and are just as worried about the country as we are.
All the real conservatives that we read and listen to and follow on social media, including policy wonks, columnists, ex presidents, and various politicians openly withdrew their support for Trump and spoke out against him. Let that sink in -- political thought leaders who want there to be no federal income taxes, or want to abolish social security, and gut Glass Steagall, all voted for Hillary Clinton. THAT'S how deep a threat Trump is to the country.
So I gave it a shot. I did the liberal thing where you're supposed to give your opponents a fair hearing. And I've reached my conclusion, which was the same conclusion every thinking person drew in November: Trump supporters are hopelessly stupid and have recklessly brought our country to the brink of ruin in pursuit of justification for their individual uselessness. I'm not trying to reach out to them and bridge gaps and create compassionate understanding because hopelessly stupid people don't want that, and wouldn't know what to do with it anyway -- that's what makes them stupid in the first place. Instead, I'm just trying to beat them next time, and while we wait for that battle to join, I'll relentlessly humiliate them so at least the rest of us don't feel gaslit to death as we watch assholes get heartfelt fair hearings and equal time in the guise of being open minded to conservative ideals. So I guess that's fair warning to stupid assholes: it's open season on ridiculing stupid assholes. I know you're going to say we're trampling on free speech and throwing a tantrum over a political disagreement. Great! Let's start here: I don't care -- you're a worthless stupid asshole.
