What does BLM have to do with a bunch of idiots setting up an ambush along their route? If BLM were advocating for violence against law enforcement you'd have some sort of a point. Every source says this was in fact a peaceful protest with law enforcement and protestors until the ambush happened.
-
Seems like MDL deleted his post.@MDL "This is atrocious.Sadly, BLM is so poorly co-ordinated these days that they leave these kinds of holes open. They create the capacity for violence by not keeping protestors in check and not leading them properly in peaceful protest."It was a peaceful protest.@Outerspec:
I fully acknowledge and protest the unfair treatment of black people here in America at the hands of the justice system but this only exacerbates the problem. To frame it as retaliation just makes it seem like those cops did something to be retaliated against. What did these particular cops do? They were the victims not of retaliation but an ill and misguided course of action born from an obvious feeling of anger and mistrust. The whole situation is just shit. Killing these officers isn't going to fix the system or help people listen. This on top of those recent high profile shootings of black men in the past few days….shit.
Retaliation in the sense of killing officers, they see officers killing black folks and they took revenge, irrespective of killing innocent police officers who (Allah knows best) may have not racial profiled people, killed innocent civilians, abused civilians, etc… They just took their anger towards those who wore a badge. Senseless killing essentially, those who were acquitted of homicide, God will deal them with them in the hereafter.

Yeah, that's just like your opinion, man.
Why yes, when discussing opaque institutions like authoritarian regimes you're going to enter the realm of semi-speculative talk.
I've already proven to you that there is ostensibly an explanation for this. Of course they're making a political statement. But they're also technically toeing the line of the religious clerics they derive their moral authority from.
Yes, this is called professional bullshitting. And you also assign far too much power to the ideologues who make up the middle support base. Ideological regimes almost always have such a body, of true believers in middle management type positions. But rarely enough in the actual upper management. The tail can wag the dog, but that's an exception. Its not the religious clerics who call the shots. Its the monarchy.http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/16/world/middleeast/saudi-arabia-moves-to-curb-its-feared-religious-police.html?_r=0The state upholds the idea of the idea, but at the end of the day its rarely is about the idea for long if at all. If true believers were in control they would not spare a Wahhabi site any more than the others, and you're kidding yourself if you think puritans would accept the museum logic. The Wahhabi site is important to the state legitimacy myth. Same as the uber-capitalist modern China retaining imagery and symbols of the past when they were actual communists.
I'll try again. There is nothing inconsistent on the surface about what the Saudis are doing. It toes the line on Wahhabi ideology and achieves their political ambition of emphasising the parts of Arabian history that suit their goals at the expense of other historical landmarks that people might otherwise care about.
It is inconsistent if you are assigning religious motives to the Saudi leadership.

Extremists are pretty much the worst bane to any sort of progress. I don't wholly support the Black Lives Matter movement, but these shootings should not be a cause to fully discredit it. It reminds me of when Kohza got shot in Alabasta.
-
It's so sad. The one time when the protesters are peaceful and the police are doing a good job, and everyone seems to get along, some idiot decides to ruin it.I'm not a huge fan of BLM either (their cause is good, but the movement is aimless and at times destructive) but these protesters were doing good, and police brutality and unfair targeting of blacks is a real problem. Neither the movement nor the police deserved this.
-
I don't even get what this guy/guys thought he/they were gonna accomplish, by shooting at innocent police officers you are effectively doing the very same thing you were seemingly fighting against only you're actually doing it out of hate. You only made things worse and now you're dead and have accomplished jackshit. Great job…

I'm starting to feel overly anxious. I'm black and I feel like I'm constantly questioning if what I'm doing at any point in time looks like it could potentially be misconstrued as something else. I'm walking with a radio at my hip at work and carrying boxes of wires and electronics. Is someone going to think I'm making bomb? I'm walking to the Y to play tennis, does my racket handle sticking out of my gym bag look like a weapon? I should not feel so paranoid but the thoughts won't stop and I can't convince myself it's irrational.

I went through this when there was a lot of islamophobic retaliation in my community. The best thing to do for a while baroness, is to focus on self-care for a while. I know the news is everywhere and it concerns issues that matter to you, but taking a break from them is in your best interest. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful and stay vigilant, but just try to stop absorbing negative news, negative comments, negative opinions online / on tv / on social media for a few days, and treat yourself to some ice cream, read a great book, or watch a funny movie. Your emotional health is more important than being weighed down by all this negativity. And not following or participating in discussions about these events for a little while doesn't mean you don't care about them. This is what works for me.

No no. That's only if you're Arab.
Seriously though, speaking as a white male (who actually is occasionally paranoid by really stupid stuff; not that your concerns are stupid) all I can say is try not to let it concern you. I think most people are sensible enough to not act on something unless they have a really REALLY good reason to think there's something wrong. And even then, I think most people would rather avoid a confrontation than start one. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

If you were watching CNN early enough yesterday they got a ton of stuff wrong initially. Early on when things like this happen often false reports go out so no big deal. @Cyclone_Baroness:

I know exactly how you feel. I'm black but very light skinned, usually I get mistaken for Latino or something until my afro grows out. I train in martial arts often, in the park around my neighborhood and friends neighborhoods. Sometime I'm carrying a long black bag with me full of staffs and occasionally a flexible prop like sword. The day after Paris was attacked I did my usual 6am training out doors and someone called the police on me assuming I was walking around with a rifle. I've been struck by the police before and 17 years later I still have the scar reminding me of that day(it was my fault but it scared the hell out of me). The best thing I can do when I feel like people may be suspicious about me is that I like to shoot smiles and hellos to everyone I cross paths with.

Maybe I'm not the best person to give advice, but whenever I feel overwhelmed by news and get scared, I turn off the computer, refuse to look at the net on my phone and go outside. I do things I love, talk to people, look around and note all the hundreds of people who walk past and nothing of note happens. The best thing is when you find people who hang out and laugh, it calms me down and reminds me that life is still pretty great despite all the horrible things that happens. Another thing I've done recently is block news sites and blogs, so I'm not overwhelmed. Of course, if a major event happens I unblock it or use my phone, but under normal circumstances it's been a huge help. Now, whenever I'm tempted to go to a political blog or global website I'm directed to pintrest instead.

I don't have that sort of friend network down here. My best friends I can only interact with online. I wish ESO had a virtual hookup. I'd just leave reality forever. So tired of it all.

Same shit I been thinking. If riots and bloodshed start happening I suppose I'll try to move to Canada?
One would think in a few months this will all blow over? No? Maybe?

Riots are already a thing If you remember baltimore. Bloodshed is already a thing as well since you can't even walk 10 feet from your house without getting shot by somebody.
One would think in a few months this will all blow over? No? Maybe?
It'll definitely blow over, but a new incident will unfortunately take its place.

Saudi Prince Turkey Al-Faisal is in the Iranian resistance conference that's being held in France. Preaching shit about how Iran should stop it with all this religious dictatorship and discrimination and theocracy.Punch me in the face and tell me this is some sort of a sick joke.
-
KSA is an oppressive, Wahhabi, authoritarian, nepotic nation. Last nation in the world to criticise another country's religious affairs. Regarding Post 79 Iran? No blame other than the 53 coup by greedy Western nations who disliked Iran nationalising it's oil service couple of years prior to the coup.

Significantly worse than Iran in every single respect I can think of as regards being theocractic.

That's absurdly simplified. The 53' coup introduced some really bad mojo into the equation, but there were many many other factors that created modern Iran. Native or foreign alike.

Apparently it's legal in Italy for homeless people to steal small amounts of food. Dunno, seems kind of counterproductive; you could just spend your entire life not working and just pick up some food whenever you need it without having to earn anything to get it.http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36190557
Do you really want to live in the road just to be able to steal a hotdog when you are starving without going to prison?

More counter-productive than the option of sentencing any and all starving, but otherwise honest, people stealing a loaf of bread to a year in jail? If you think that being homeless and taking scraps of food to survive is, in anyway, an enviable lifestyle then don't know what your frames of reference are like.
-
Yeah, what I said was pretty stupid now that I think about it. While it is ideal that homeless people can eventually find a way to earn money for food, this is a better way to go than prison sentences, which won't help the problem at all. Hopefully this can help decease poverty and homelessness. But yeah, I didn't really think before I posted. In more comical news, Clefairy has invaded the Westboro Baptist Church: http://kotaku.com/pokemon-go-fan-trolls-westboro-baptist-church-church-f-1783449276?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Facebook&utm_source=Kotaku_Facebook&utm_medium=Socialflow

The European Council of Finance Ministers decided to sanction Portugal for not meeting the deficit requirement in the EU treaties of 3 %, having a deficit of 3,2 % by the end of 2015, after 4 years of implementing a plan designed and supervised by the EU and the ECB, all the while being described by these institutions as the "good student" who successfully applied the program. Absolutely humiliating. Ridiculous. And then these people wonder why the level of faith in the EU is at an all time low, culminating in the Brexit (so far). http://www.theportugalnews.com/news/ecofin-follows-eurogroup-recommendations-to-apply-sanctions-against-portugal/38820

EU has been that annoying uncle who stays at your home too long and demands that everyone become a vegan like him. It's just that many people who had been voicing their concerns about their far reaching regulatory tactics are being heard now. The complaints about the migrants just pushed the agenda beyond repair for the Brexit but many economists weren't really happy about the functioning of the EU. There are also many other economies rising around the globe which doesn't require countries to bend their knees to EU regulations to be trading partners.

The thing is that the EU could be so damn great, but instead it has become a giant byzantine mess which barely anyone understands how it works, with the only democratically elected body being the European Parliament, which, let's say, doesn't have any input whatsoever in these bigger decisions. And they keep pushing and pushing their neoliberal agenda on the weaker states, while letting France and Germany off the hook, while they also break these kinds of rules. It's been getting worse and worse. They're not only promoting inequality between people, they're promoting inequality between countries and keeping an entire economic block tied down. Italy is just reaching the tilting point. Its banking system is close to collapse, as are some big german banks. We're getting closer and closer to another monumental disaster in Europe. It's one after another and these "leaders" just keep pushing a dumb agenda that solves absolutely jack shit. And as an europeist, that saddens me even more.

A Harvard professor released a study showing little to no racial bias in shootings. A harvard professor is completely wrong.
"we find no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account,” means they throw out all the data that shows black people get shot more by calling it "contextual." so they can get to "police are unbiased, honest!" result.
Like when a man was shot repeatedly in his car in front of his girlfriend and child for having a broken tail light, the "context" was he was going for his wallet and that scared the police officer!
Context!
Nothing racial about that! If you throw out all the cases where the police officer makes an excuse of some sort for shooting an unarmed black man and the police force ignores the camera footage, why then, there's almost no black deaths at all!
Context!

Harvard Economics professor.
Can we get an actual sociologist on the line?
-
Hell, you just look at our prisons, which are loaded down with black prisoners for super minor drug crimes versus all the white guys jailed for actual crimes. Something insane like 1 in 3 black men spends time in jail in their lifetime. While people of color make up about 30 percent of the United States’ population, they account for 60 percent of those imprisoned.
But no, there's noooothing racial there.
Context!
Those guys looked at the police officer funny.
