Except there's only one marine who had an actual seagull figure on top of his cap.
That doesn't mean that Sora is based off Segoku and that is just a figurine anyways.

The topic about Greg's collumn got me to re-read chapter 131.
On that chapter we see Chess (one of Wapol's thugs) stading on water, because he's actually on top of a massive ship/submarine.
It's possible that the walk on water ability that Sora has is actually a ship/submarine.
I feel like you took Vito's words too literal, I mean he's a mafia pirate claiming moral superiority about a comicbook hero that hunts pirates. Of course he would think the worst of it.
Its not like all marines get to be akainu or nezumi. Most marines do sora's work, and that is what the general population perceives.
Until someone more trustworthy or knowledgeable talks about the comic, I'll ignore any claims of brain washing.
That doesn't mean that Sora is based off Segoku and that is just a figurine anyways.
I meant more like Sengoku wears it because Sora is his childhood hero or something. It appears as if that seagull had a habit of resting on Sora's cap. Sengoku's own cap seems to be a clear reference. Really doubt it's a coincidence, knowing how Oda throws in little hints like this.

I think its more the other way around–he wears it so that the kids reading about Sora see it on him and think "Oh man, this guy is like real life Sora!".

Your post didn't really give that impression but I can see why the highest Marine at that time was wearing it.

Yeah depending on how old it is I can see sengoku's hat being some old tradition of fleet admirals but akainu thouht it was just ridiculous and dropped it. It's been around since vito was a kid though and he's at least 25 ish
It is interesting to wonder how much this one little comic strip has actively influenced the OP world.
You wonder how an economic magazine can achieve success in brainwashing young people…
No, what I meant was I want to see if I can spot how the comic strip goes about instilling the kind of values a marine is suppose to have, and how it conveys that to kids.
Akainu had the seagull on top his hat until his first mission as fleet Admiral, some magma splashed on birdie
Not only that. I wonder why Oda bothered to create a magazine for this comic when we already have the News Coo.
the we times sounds more like the new york times which is a newspaper lol.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times
It's most likely a shitty translation since the person doing the translation does not know what a newspaper is lol.

I'm at loss for words. You're making yourself look stupid, don't do that to yourself.

I know what the New York Times is, I am living on Earth you know.
My point is that Oda created the News Coo back in East Blue. It is well established that the world government controls this newspaper and that everyone around the world reads it.
Sora's adventure could have been published in the News Coo.
Kids are more likely to read the News Coo than a magazine about economics. I don't get why he came up with the We Times.

I am the one that is at a loss for words since i have not read any translations saying that it's a magazine please feel free to link it if you think i am stupid please go ahead since i am waiting whatever translation you got that says its a magazine is wrong even the spoiler thread calls it a newspaper lol.
A big difference between a magazine and a newspaper.
I read the comics in newspapers all the time as a kid i did not care about the rest so i get why people its hard for kids to just read the comics i did not even need to buy it since my dad did lol.

They can have more than one newspaper also i would like a link to where it says the we times comic strip is in a magazine since the only thing i remember him saying is that it's a comic strip that runs in the we times i don't know where people get magazine from lol.

Don't bother, I made a similar point and people kept asking for an explanation as if they were hellbent on finding an inconsistency on Oda's part. Regardless of where it is published, for all we know, the WE is just a section/magazine that comes with the newspaper. Back at home, every Thursday a weekly magazine is published along with the newspaper, as mundane as I found it, they still printed comic strips that I would look at. Why are people so hung up on such a minor detail?
Says nothing about it being a magazine there also in the spoiler thread its called a newspaper as well and like i said we times sounds like new york times which is a newspaper and i am pretty sure its mostly newspapers with times at the end as well be very rare to find a magazine with that.
new york times,sunday times,ect

the comic section has always been part of the newspaper since its printed on the same paper you could buy a book of the years newspapers comic section every year i did that with garfield the cat as a kid by keeping the newspaper bits or by buying the garfield comic book which was just that years collection of comic strips that was posted in the newspaper.

What if the News Coo doesn't have any comic strips? Or if the WE is part of the News Coo? We know very little about it to start pin pointing out its its irrelevancy.
Yeah and there is also the Financial Times.
In my link it's written " Oda footnote : World Economic Times ". Which means it's an economic magasine.

.
Why do you say it is a translation error then ?
And I said it was a magazine. But if it is a newspaper, honestly I don't care. That was not the point I was addressing.
Its pretty simple if the sora thing was in the news coo, it would've seemed like sanji was hiding his connection to germa 66 even more. If everyday nami, or whoever else is looking at the news coo and potentially reading the sora story. Thats another chance for sanji to tell them. But this way it kind've separated from them, yet allowing that guy to talk about them. And hey guys there are more than one newspaper in the world, why not this one. Just like theres more than one comic company. I don't get this discussion at all.
I mean it isn't bad writing at all but it felt unnecessary. Though I will agree that, since it isn't a problem, it isn't worth debating that much.

we times: world( as In world government), economics times.
The sora and germa(german) 66 could be a reference to WWII comics with american propaganda of superman fighting the nazi(Germans).
As noted by Artur on an alternate forums.

Oh now that is an interesting connection.
Aren't News Coos just the delivey birds? They deliver wanted posters too. I don't recall the newspaper they deliver being officially called "The News Coo". For all we know the main newspaper we have seen characters reading up until now has been the WE Times and we are just now hearing the name.

Not likely since Oda is japanese. Not likely a reference to that specifically i mean.

The world is huge yet people are making a big deal about there being two newspapers.. Sometimes the stuff discussed here is beyond any logic.
@The:
Not likely since Oda is japanese.
So? Most of us here aren't japanese yet a lot of us know about historical media facts about japan.
It's already established that Oda actively researches and draws inspiration from the entire world, so why is Oda having knowledge of the most famous comicbook superhero's history during one of the most notorious events in human history so unbelievable?
Not only that. I wonder why Oda bothered to create a magazine for this comic when we already have the News Coo.
The News Coo delivers newspapers….this is maybe one of those papers.

That's is exactly the question I ask myself.
Do they not have print newspapers in France? And wherever the rest of you confused folks live?
The paper's have dry names like "THE PARIS GAZETTE", "THE BOSTON JOURNAL" etc. And the vast majority of it is for adults. But hey the kids know that somewhere in the paper are the cartoons. With Charlie Brown, Family Circus, Wizard of Id, Calvin and Hobbes, whatever.
Especially on Sundays when the cartoons are like a big huge special section.
I mean maybe this is less and less common with papers being less popular, and maybe yeah some countries don't have that.
But anyone American here? You should know.
And pardon me if I doubt that most of your countries don't have something like this, since apparently Japan does.

Even real life authoritarian governments with systems of propaganda don't just have one source. Russia alone has like three or so different propaganda news websites with full english language versions aimed at people outside their borders (RT, Tass, Pravda). Let alone their internal stuff.
The WG having a more basic newspaper, and maybe something more along the lines of Time or Newsweek makes sense. Now add a cartoon aspect like normal newspapers and boom. The kids check their parents magazines.
We shouldn't obsess over the "economic" part of the name. Like I said lots of these things have strange names that don't entirely describe them but sound fancy.
I hope the One Piece version of the Daily News also has a propensity for hilarious cover pages.

Comic strip is not really a format used in French newspapers.
And my question was related to the fact that an Economic news paper sounds even more adult. So it is weird for to have a comic targeting young people in there
But well, it’s not important

No one ever slightly implied that. Why would you all of sudden associate our lack of knowledge with our origins ?

But…You are the one that....huh whatever.
It's a goddamn economic newspaper. Why da fuck would there be a comic strip ? This is actually a very important question. Well, I guess Oda will make it clear in sbs. But have you ever seen a comic strip in the Financial Times ? Well, maybe there are but i'm skipping, i dont know…...
Hummm, but in another hand i'm wondering what the author means by "economic newspaper", do you expect a newspaper IN ONEPIECE speaking of Alabasta's rate of unemployment ? Or whatever ? The oil trade between Alabasta and some kingdoms ? Well, I would like it.

Why not? It could be how Amber Lead got so popular, and usually the comic strips are satire of the current political events. Because freedom of speech ain't a thing in WG standards, they just publish their marine propaganda instead. Also I can just imagine kids asking their parents after a friend tella them about this adventure in this newspaper/magazine. Forcing more parents to buy it upping sales and influence.
Back in my country the News paper is filled with everything, from economics to Sport to social, I mean, you name it and is there.
PS: there used to be two pages of comics in one of those sections.

Why would he answer such a question in an SBS? This is literally less important than the stuff asked there.

My local newspaper have comic strips in their monthly financial reports. "Bill the Banker". Cheesy? Yes, but they DO EXIST, so why the over-aggressive post? Just take this information as it is. It is a fictional story about pirates, after all.

Newspapers themselves are not aimed at children, but the comics are included anyway (and to be fair they appeal across age groups themselves).
Parents get the paper/magazine for the news and stuff. And the kids also check it out for that one part.
Really simple concept that is widespread in reality.

Your fellow Frenchman (woman?) just said you guys don't really have newspaper strips, so congratulations that's why I associated your possible confusion with your national origins.
Because like, some places they have certain things that other places don't have. And so people get confused at things that other people think are kinda normal. And then we go "Oh ok I see, we don't have that". "No problem, it's not strange for OP to include that you see. Real life also has it.". "Oh cool, got it".

You mean JJJ (think it was James Jonah Jameson)? lol be hilarious if the head has triple identical initials like that, though I'd doubt it.
So far Oda seems to take inspiration from real people (either their names or actors' characters) right?
So who in real world is a big name that is related to newspapers? Maybe not the actual head honcho like JJJ, but maybe an owner?
Did Warren Buffet own one? Murdoch?
How about a paper that's heavily one sided, that is used for propaganda?

You're silly the kids don't care about the newspaper the parents buy that they only care about the comics inside since the kids don't go around buying newspapers the parents do so why is it so hard for you to figure this out for yourself? why the heck do people have to tell you? have you never read a newspaper before?

I think you're mistakening him… he knows that newspaper has comics, but he finds it strange that a financial newspaper will have comic strips. Usually financial newspapers have no comic strips (unless its some caricature or something). Only those 'combined newspapers' have them.
Maybe it isn't really a financial newspaper, its just the name. Or a mistranslation. But I checked the Chinese scans, its exactly the same thing.
Either way I don't think this topic doesn't really deserve its page long discussion.
I guess we could talk about Gotti. So..does he have any redeeming qualities ?

Facts about the Strawhats? We don't need facys about the Strawhats! We need pictures! Pictures of that damn Pandaman!
I guess we could talk about Gotti. So..does he have any redeeming qualities ?
Hell no. He looks so generic that he should have been called Firetank Pirate A.
Facts about the Strawhats? We don't need facys about the Strawhats! We need pictures!
Any OP version of JJJ that covered the Strawhats would be trying to find out about Sogeking … Who's that in that damn mask? Why did he only appear at Enies Lobby then Water 7 then disappear again? Who the hell hides behind a mask! What is he hiding! Remember the pictures! ...esp of Nami, those sell well
(while the marines know Usopp is Sogeking, the civilians -save for those that allied with SHs- don't)
