i was really hating this no-mugiwara-focused plot, but Oda manages to make it incredible even tho
what a nice chapter.. really loved it
Edit: Baby5 confirmed for 10th nakama?

Sai's kick was very impressive. I hope he didn't overdo it, killing Abdulah, Jeet and Ucy.
… and he didn't even try to train them before using them when he needed them. Sai surely had thought about his family's technique to open up the ice before this fight. So, how is that significantly different from what happened in this chapter?
If anything, Luffy is even more far-fetched since, for all we know, Sai could have been trying to perfect this technique for years and only now did he manage to fully perfect it when he really needed it. Luffy had way less time than that and no apparent training. Luffy just had a couple of ideas and at the first time he really needed it, he used them effectively without any training. Meanwhile, Sai has probably heard about his family's technique all his life and has thought about it, maybe even tried to mastered it by training, and only now did he truly achieve it in his time of need.
I think you misunderstood, I'm not agreeing with Darth here, just wanted to adress Luffy's gears.
Seems obvious to me that Sai just achieved the ultimate level of his technique without noticing it. After all, you can't know how good you are until you're facing an actual challenge.
@Galaxy:
I really suggest that you just read Aohige's summary in the first post.
Kind of unrelated, but do you happen to know the schedule for the rest of the year?
Fully enjoyed? Nope. As I said, there are many things wrong with it.
Treatment of Baby 5, for example, considering the story context. It's horrible and troublesome.
It's rushed. Obviously so.
There is lack of internal consistency Sai's provess in combat.
And I was actually looking forwards to Lao G, so him biting the dust so quickly is disappointing. Not to mention, it looks terrible for Doflamingo Crew as a whole.
Agreed 100%. I think Oda wants to show us how fake and selfish this so called family is in it's core and now they will fall apart but he faild in my opinion. And now everything is rushed and they look like weaklings
I have been thinking for a while that Sai's face and hair looks rather similar to Don Krieg. And now, he is DON Sai, coincidence or illuminati?
I'm confused, you said that there's nothing stating that he thought of G2 after observing CP9 moves but at the same time you're admitting that he copied Soru which is basically an advanced version of G2.
There's Asura and every Strawhat power up during that arc, we didn't see any of that coming even Nami's climatac had an upgrade without us seeing anything relating to it.
Soru is just a movement technique. Kicking the ground multiple times to build speed has nothing to do with the widening of blood vessels. Especially since there's no ground kicking or punching involved in G2 activation.
And Oda never really shows SH training and devising new techniques.
Baby 5 deserved better than this as a character.
I'm not trying to spin the usual "shes cute so lets make her join the strawhats" but with her crazy personality and power this seems a huge waste. I was hoping for a fight against Robin or Nami at least.
Kind of unrelated, but do you happen to know the schedule for the rest of the year?
the next chapter's official release date (as in the date the magazine goes on sale in Japan) is January 5th (issue 6/7), the one following that is January 19th (issue 8).
I think there's been occasions when the next chapter comes earlier than scheduled, but then that means a 3 week break. Guess we'll see.

Kreig is the bastard grandchild that Chinjao refused to acknowledge so he grew up in East Blue.
He grew up hearing about the granddad that disowned him (parents didn't have the Don's permission to marry) and his Happou fleet.
Kreig assumed a 'Don' title when he gathered a fleet of ships.:ninja:
(actually the 3rd line is likely true in that he claimed the title when he gathered a fleet, its the other 2 that's the joke)
One of the fellows on Reddit brought up this interesting point about Baby 5's name. She was considered so useless that she was given a number instead of a real name. That's messed up.
She has a real name. "Baby 5" is a codename.
Just like Buffalo and the seats.

What is baby5 real name? I didnt know she had one :O
Sai is almost equal to prime Garp.
They both mess up Chinjao's head with OHKO. Sai break it, while Grap made it flat.
The best part of this chapter was Lao G calling Sai a monkey, in his dying breath.
Sai is almost equal to prime Garp.

Its hard to tell with you or if you are master troll or 10 years old
Garp destroyed prime Chinjao from like 30 years ago?
And Sai made beaten over 70 years old Chinjao look like a wizard..
Dont compare Prime Garp with Sai, eyes hurt from looking at it

You guys are silly, you need to convert to Cavendish units.

I must have missed some hidden signals or something

I would not dare to calculate in Cavendishes Monquito is specialist.
Soon we will get to see calculations on how many Trebols is one Cavendish I bet

Luffy just found a way to use this technique without having to have a rigorous training, he said he was going to find ways to get stronger, so he did.

Sai is slightly stronger than current Garp though.
Hilarious chapter Lao G is like the coolest old man ever
also I want to see the moment when Boo has to succeed the Donship by bending and breaking Sai's leg.. ouch lol
Kind of unrelated, but do you happen to know the schedule for the rest of the year?
The next chapter is contained in a double issue, and with New Years coming up… it's not really 100% predictable.
Sometime between 12/25-12/31 is probably how it'll be for 772 (last year we got a chapter on December 17th, and then the next one came on Christmas). After that erratic issue, it's a 2 week break, so January 15th.
Jump dates here though:
@Kaizou:
Issue 3 = December 15, 2014
Issue 4/5 = December 22, 2014
Issue 6/7 = January 5, 2015
Issue 8 = January 19, 2015
(Current issue is 4/5)
That's been discussed here for a while. Think it was just last chapter someone commented they thought her problem was that she was born to a poor family and was so unwanted that they just identified her as the 5th child as in "baby #5"= Baby 5
If that ends up being true, then maybe her family did the same to the other babies that came before her, and they could still be somewhere in the world, in this case, if Baby 5 joins Sai and becomes an ally for the strawhats, maybe in the future we'll be seeing baby 1-4, her siblings xD, that would be kinda interesting imo.

Thank you!
And just to clarify, when it comes to One Piece "double issue" always means 1 chapter covering two weeks, but when we talk about other manga (like Naruto) it's the other way around?
!
I'm not going to lose sleep over this, but it's still somewhat irritating.
On the topic of Baby 5's portrayal as an object in need of help:
Of course she's not going to come to her senses on her own! She's lived her whole life being told she's useless and then being taken advantage of. Baby 5 has a pathological desire to be needed rooting from her abandonment issues as a child, and this behavior has been actively encouraged by the Donquixote family. When a person has been told their dependence on approval is good for their whole life, they're not just going to snap out of it by themselves. In this case, having a coming to her senses not only involves countering a lifetime of conditioning but also going against her adopted family and mentors. I think we'll see her grow into herself more and become more independent if we see her later, but her behavior is consistent right now.
Moreover, slapping in this case is completely acceptable. Oda generally favors the "smack the person for being stupid" opening over the "good guys shout at you until you have a change of heart." That comes after you've broken their facade and grabbed their attention. Sai in particular seems to have an irreverent attitude and this is a person he's been fighting up until now, so why wouldn't he slap her?
For feminist concerns, Oda continues to write underwhelming female characters and it would be nice to see a vulnerable male character change sides or be in need. Her character could easily be male, but as a female Baby 5's behavior feeds into existing gender stereotypes of service and dependence. However, I don't think the slap itself should be construed as sexist or violence against women. People have often criticized Oda for shielding women too much, but when Rebecca gets beat down by Diamante it's a bad thing. In this case, a slap like this could have and has happened to characters of both sexes, so I don't think it should be considered as much a part of the problem.
If you're still reading One Piece you should know better than to expect gender progressive themes from Oda. Doesn't mean you shouldn't still want to see one, but don't get your hopes up.
Great chapter. So her name is Baby 5 and not a code name.

Well, the magazine is the one that calls it a "double issue", with that magazine issue covering 2 publishing weeks (because 52 seems better than something in the 40s?)
In the context of the double Naruto chapter though… it just meant 2 chapters in that issue.
Oh and also I wanted to say - remind some people - that Lao G wasnt KOed.
He was heavily wounded and fallen down to pit created by Sais kick so Sai didnt one shotted Lao G who was showing Vergo syndrome. G ended up not KOed like Machvise but surely deafeated.
I would not be suprised if he gets younger or at least his body-looks of him being very changed when we see him again, all thanks to his muscle relase technique.

To be fair, if that's from Mangastream, they probably mistranslated something or another. I wouldn't be surprised if it just said something like "Welcome to the stunning, two-chapter conclusion "

That's how Mangapanda translated it.
The reaction to the whole Baby 5 thing is surprisingly tame here.
Personally I'm ok with it but it's a bit disturbing if you think about it.
Some issue that I have seen being brought up elsewhere.
LaoG isn't dead, is he?
So, next chapter will probably be Ideo vs Delly.
I hope that this fight will be more serious, at least one officer should win.
Go, Delly!!!
at least one officer should win.
Dellinger has already defeated Suleiman, Blue Gilly, and Dagama.
Lao G defeated Chinjao in this very chapter, but then was defeated by Sai.
Then Machvise defeated Boo, and Hajrudin (who got back up and defeated him).
They all have victories under their belts already.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
LaoG isn't dead, is he?
Nah. Isn't this him talking in the last page?
!
That, and I wouldn't expect him to be anymore than knocked out knowing Oda.
Bepo looks a bit depressed on that character poll eh? Clearly not enough votes.
I loved this chapter
Is there a break next week?
@TJB:

Guess it means Oda really likes the character and so do I

Nah, I figured it out… he's checking out Baby 5
Is there a break next week?
Double issue this week, so yeah. Also double issue the week after that.
Great chapter. So her name is Baby 5 and not a code name.
No, it is a code name. She told Law and Buffalo her real name.
I'm catching up on good translations and God Damnit MP and MS are really fucking us up. I'll be paying that $30 next year.

I really doubt that.

Nice analysis of Baby 5 and what happened to her from a general perspective and touching on feminist concerns and I do want to see her grow into her own person now.
This arc as a whole really shines brightly to me.
Doflamingo lured in all of these desperate people with a glimmer of hope in the mera mera, all just to trap Luffy.
When he captured the losing competitors he thought he was building up his own slave toy army,
when in fact he was actually bringing together the first united mugiwara fleet/first amalgamated church of the one true god Usopp.
See, this is what I love about OP. Something quirky that's played up for laughs actually turns out being a really deep, emotional thing. The thing I always think about is how Brook's afro isn't just a silly thing that amuses Oda, but a reminder for Laboon - to the point where Brook was getting maimed to keep it from being damaged. Baby 5 wanting to be useful to the point of killing herself is just the same. What others see as a ridiculous quality is her way of gaining self-worth. It's tragic, yet you can't say they're in the wrong no matter what.
Is sai the first person who refused to take advantage of baby 5?
Out of kindness and a sense honour i mean
Agreed 100%. I think Oda wants to show us how fake and selfish this so called family is in it's core and now they will fall apart but he faild in my opinion. And now everything is rushed and they look like weaklings
They're not looking like weaklings, as evidenced by:

This chapter was good;it wasn't great, but I really liked it. First of all, I like the fact of Chinjao getting beat up was explained as him still being injured from the fight with Luffy AND his old age (it actually makes pretty good sense).
Second: Sai inherited Chinjao's will and gained his respect as the leader of the Happou Nave; not only did this match up with the theme of inherited will that permeates the entire story, the lack of respect was obvious by the fact that Chinjao offered the navy leadership to Luffy.
Third: Sai had some real development here; he is getting married (which is also relieving Baby 5 of a painful past) and will be a major asset to Luffy in the future as an ally. That is Great.
