I reflected.
How can we know Sanji has Hardening?
And if he can't do it, why he can't?
Chapter 771: Sai, Leader of the Happou Navy
-
-
Well this chapter was…I don't even know. The mood was pretty all over the place, comedy one minute, sympathic the next, then heartwarming and awesome moment. I'm not complaining too much cause we finally got two of the Doflamingo Family members out of the way and it did make me laugh. It's just really hard to gauge this one cause, well, they're side characters and so much exposition dump as well. I guess Oda's editors are telling him to wrap it up so Luffy and Doflamingo can finally throw down so he's speeding up the process.
One more chapter before the two week break right?
-
For feminist concerns, Oda continues to write underwhelming female characters and it would be nice to see a vulnerable male character change sides or be in need.
What about Coby? At least for the vulnerable part in need.
-
What about Coby? At least for the vulnerable part in need.
Early on Coby is close to the border between needing inspiration and being in distress. If needing the inspiration to fight was the case, basically everyone in the series has been inspired by Luffy and the Strawhats. He's still the best male example of it, but the only other male victim I can really think of is Brownbeard.
-
I've been thinking Doflamingo will commit suicide so that no one could get their revenge on him and he can die with the last laugh. Now seeing Baby 5 forfeit her life, I want to believe it's foreshadowing.
-
@TJB:
Nah, I figured it out… he's checking out Baby 5
Are you sure? Because if anything he seems sad that she's not a female bear.
-
2. The fact that Don attacks and is kicked in the head by Sai is a bit stupid as is the fact that out of thin air in that moment Sai gets some amazing technique passed down and with it he bends Dons head
Oh I liked the perserving one punch thing but in general Lao G this Sai thing etc are just seriously out of thin air and whatever…
Out of thin air? These guys aren't the protagonists, we're not watching their every move that's brought them up to this point. They've all obviously had their own developments up to arriving in Dressrosa. That seems like a pretty silly thing to accuse of being "out of thin air".
-
Luffy just found a way to use this technique without having to have a rigorous training, he said he was going to find ways to get stronger, so he did.

Somehow i get the feeling that Luffy commenting on the king's punch will end up having it's effect on all of his attacks making it his next power up.
-
Double issue this week, so yeah. Also double issue the week after that.
Where did you see it is a double issue this week?
-
Where did you see it is a double issue this week?
The cover of the magazine explicitly says, issue 4 and 5!
-
Last year, scanlators somehow obtained the issue earlier, so we got earlier scans (Christmas), but had to wait 3 weeks for new chapters.
This year we either get scans on Christmas or New Year's Eve.

Gomu gomu no cannon?

As much as I dislike Oda's characterization of Baby 5, I have to give him credit for the morbid and subtle twist involving her name (makes me wonder what happened to babies 1-4).

Did I miss something? What's so meaningful about her name?
Also, Law being the number 2 most popular character in the entire series probably shouldn't bother me as much as it does. Really Japan? I thought we were over this shit. I could have sworn we all just silently went back to hating him as a collective.
-
Finally, I got to the end of this thread! I can now say without a doubt that nobody mentioned this rather important fact.@Razh:
There was no build up like usual when someone discovers something new in a fight. It's more likely the results of his training, used for the first time.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Hope Baby 5 doesn't get any ideas about "thanking" Sai. The whole deal could break off, lol.
Did no one remember that baby 5 is in serious debt? She owes, I believe at least 100 million berries. Here's to hoping that Sai's kick can open the ice. He's going to need that money to pay off his fiance's debt;)
-
@Miss:
Did I miss something? What's so meaningful about her name?
Well, ask yourself this. Does the mother in the flashback seem like she cared at all about giving her unneeded baby a proper name?

Since when were you under the impression Japan hated Law?
Or the west itself? Or anywhere that's not AP for that matter?
It's not Law's fault that Sasuke ruined the brooding guy archetype.

She has a real name. It was confirmed.
Baby 5 is a code name.

Ah boo. Guess I'll go look that up then.
What's the meaning of her alias, though?

She probably gave herself the title "Baby 5" due to how she perceives herself.
-
Ah boo. Guess I'll go look that up then.
before you waste effort looking it up, we don't actually know what her name is, just that she has one. When her and buffalo were asking about Law's full name, they mentioned that they had said their names so it's only fair he reveals his too. That's where we got the info from.
-

Since I decided to maintain a functioning internet connection. I dunno if you know, but more places than AP hate Law. Basically anywhere where there's a decent OP community, I've seen plenty of negativity towards him.
And the "brooding guy" archetype is the least of his issues, in my opinion.Still waiting to know what's so deep about the title "Baby 5." I'm interested to hear theories on it now.
-

It's likely the name taken as she was not given a name by her family, rather tossed aside and called Baby 5, or their 5th child. She may believe it to actually be her name.

What is there to dislike about Law? The brooding? We've seen his lighter side, and I'm willing to bet that we'll see more and more of it after Doffy goes down and he can finally put his entire horrible life behind him.
And lets be real here, Law is essentially a male Robin. Both were quiet dark types after they were first introduced, both have the two most horrific pasts out of anyone on the crew, and they both call(ed) everyone else by nicknames. I'm sure once Luffy beats Doflamingo and saves Law he'll open up the same way she did.
Do you, or did you, hate Robin too?

Honestly, most of the negativity I see against him seems to be because he's super popular.
The only negative thing I have against him is his inconsistent and overpowered ability, but aside from that everything else seems done well enough.
-

And because of his hax abilities, given too much screentime and what not, not that I mind.

Dang, I was on the boat of "I don't want to watch these side characters fight," and here we get a chapter where that features backstory, characterization, shocking new developments, and a few twists for four relatively unknown characters. I've never cared about the Happou Navy, the fact that it has a new leader turns that feeling of indifference on its head. A generation shift is always interesting! Also, Lao G is badass. It's a shame he didn't last longer.
Also, I'm having a translation issue. Near the end of the chapter Lao G calls Baby 5 convenient. Baby smiles while shedding a tear. Is this translation correct? Cause I assume this scene is Lao G unveiling that Donflamingo's crew see's her a tool to be used, her unveiling their evil abuse of one of their own crew mates? That's a very interesting detail, especially from a crew that's been pretty loyal to each other so far. It'd mean that Baby 5 really is an exception amongst this group, and it paints her very presence in a different light. Heck, I fondly remember Donflamingo saving her life during Law's flashback–it seemed heroic! But if she's being raised as a suicidal soldier, well that changes things! Hopefully I'm not being lead in the wrong direction.

The people who "hate" Law usually only hate him for superficial reasons.
They're actually are a small minority. They just yell the loudest. -

You know that more popular something is, the louder the vocal hate is, right.
-
God. I seriously need to reread all of these chapters in legible forms. I just can't enjoy it anymore. Too bad powermanga takes is backlogged.
-
-
You know that more popular something is, the louder the vocal hate is, right.
Does that apply to OP in general? I rarely hear people screaming about hating it in comparison to other popular things like titans, and ponies.
-
Law is very popular but you can't compare him with those.
-
I must have missed some hidden signals or something
Yes you did here

Maan, there's a high chance for Kidd to get all the spotlight after Law in the "make-a-line-and-wait-your-turn" for supernovas, and I don't think I'll be able to handle the hate towards Kidd, he already seems to be cooler than Law to me.
-
Lao really knows how to hit that G-spot.
-
Baby 5 deserved better than this as a character.
I'm not trying to spin the usual "shes cute so lets make her join the strawhats" but with her crazy personality and power this seems a huge waste. I was hoping for a fight against Robin or Nami at least.
That'd be a repeat of Nami's Alabasta fight. No thanks.

Chinjao said he can split the ice continent now. That said, they're pirates!
-
How many gladiators will join pirate crews like Jean Bart
-
"Baby 5" is her nickname, baby + the fact Mingo used to slap her with an open hand.
-
The reaction to the whole Baby 5 thing is surprisingly tame here.
Personally I'm ok with it but it's a bit disturbing if you think about it.
Some issue that I have seen being brought up elsewhere.- Baby 5 is betraying the crew which she was part of for 16 years for a guy she just met. Also, she was mourning the loss of her previous fiance just yesterday…
- She was defeated in a non-lethal manner...
-Not the first time she did it. She was seriously trying to kill Doffy here.
-She stated it her self that she's leaving the family after her current mission. -
You know who's the real victim of this chapter? Buffalo. He's sitting somewhere surely trying to walk off a broken neck.
He never got a chapter dedicated to marrying Sai! No, he just got beaten a bunch of times to show us, the viewer, that Baby 5 is so weak that we really don't need a chapter with her fighting. Really, it's a weird thing where a fighter in a shonen manga sticks around for so longer after 1) losing to some of the weaker characters in the series, and then 2) having your fighting partner lose chapters ago (in horror movies that'd normally mean your death! Baby 5 is really lucky!). But clearly all this was working towards the outcome of this chapter.
And yet…Buffalo is stick lying unconscious somewhere. Kind of unfair isn't it? That Baby 5 gets all this chapter development, yet all we know about Buffalo is what we saw from the Law flashback--and there all we learned was that Buffalo was a brat who'll let you get away with murder if you bribe him with ice cream. I wonder (assuming the translation is right, I trust nothing now), if Lao G thinks of Baby 5's willingness to kill herself as "convenient," does Buffalo feel the same? Is he in on it, or is he really Baby 5's friend? Hopefully this gets answered later!
I freaking love Donflamingo's crew. They're the most interesting one I've seen in a awhile.

I get the impression he walks a tightrope there. Sure, he's friendly with Baby 5, but Buffalo did take advantage of her nature. He stated she had a debt but that didn't stop him from asking her to loan him money.
-
And yeah I seriously don't understand the hype behind Attack of Titan. It's gotten a crossover with America comic, it's getting a movie etc.
I guess people like seeing humans gets swallowed by giant zombies for some reason.
-
My biggest gripe about this arc has been that there's too many things going on at once and that it ruined the quality of all the fights.
I don't care about any of the characters in this chapter, but I really enjoyed it. OP is amazing when they focus on one fight at a time, I wish they did this instead of giving filler 2 page per fights that accomplishes nothing.
-

I don
t understand this. Through Law
s flashback and now this chapter, Oda turned a rather bland character with a cool DF power into a pretty sympathetic and surprisingly complex one. I did not expect her to get a tragic backstory for her running gag at all. How exactly did she "deserve better as a character"? Oda did a lot more with her character than one could have expected. Oh, wait, I guess you are just talking about "character", and you actually mean "someone I wanted to see have a fight", because that is totally the same thing. Did people somehow forget that Baby 5 already had a big fight against Franky on Punk Hazard, where she got to show off her powers? We already saw a lot of her in action, we don`t need to see it again against Sai. This was a much better way to resolve their fight.Chapter was great btw. Last chapter suffered a bit for me, since I (like many people I bet) didn
t care too much about Machvise and Harj….Hajjjdr......the giant. (I actually just forgot his name, lol). After seeing so much off the DoFlamingo family in this arc, I really wanted them to get the focus they deserve as characters in their fights. And this chapter did not disappoint me. Yes, the fight only took one chapter, but it actually has been going on for quite some time now, and Oda really packed quite a lot in this one chapter. Baby 5
s backstory, Lao G being both hilarious and powerful (I was so sure that Don Chinjao would beat him, honestly. Yes, he may have been weakened by his fight with Luffy, but still, that was quite an accomplishment), and Sai, a character I didn`t care at all about before, becoming an awesome, sympathetic badass.I hope Gladius and Dellinger get also a chapter each, both their fights have the potential to be a lot of fun. Atleast Oda isn
t doing what some had suggested earlier, k.o.ing all the executives in one chapter like the Fishman Island Pirates. These guys deserve some focus. I mean, the readers don
t really seem to know what they want, anyway Ive read some people here complaining that one chapter fights aren
t enough for these characters, then I read some people complaining that "Oda is wasting so much time on these unimportant side characters". And that last complaint is one I dont understand at all either. Oda creates so many interesting looking characters with cool powers and unique personalities (or cool personalities and unique powers) and then...you want him to just ignore them all, not give them any focus, pretty much waste their time in the story? It
s just such a dumb complaint. People who complain about this arc dragging when reading it weekly have to understand that a full, complex, epic story will make for much better reading in one sitting than a rushed one, where big moments don`t get enough build-up and everything feels a little empty and superficial. -
I get the impression he walks a tightrope there. Sure, he's friendly with Baby 5, but Buffalo did take advantage of her nature. He stated she had a debt but that didn't stop him from asking her to loan him money.
Looks like we're getting to the discussion I was looking forward to.
It raises questions about whether Lao G viewed Baby 5 solely as a tool, whether he was the only one to do so, whether Doflamingo felt any family loyalty to her or also only kept her as a tool, and if that Machiavellian perspective was the official secret Donquixote position, how far down the family did that knowledge spread?
For instance, Buffalo is an asshole but Senor Pink is a genuinely caring guy. If the Donquixote family as a whole saw Baby 5 as a tool, I can't help but think Pink would strongly object to it. Would Buffalo and Dellinger, who are the same age or younger, know?
Likewise, it makes me wonder who else some family members might consider merely tools. We've already seen Law and Baby 5. Will there be any more callous reveals?
Really, it depends on what direction Oda wants to take the arc. He could have the Donquixote family tear itself apart due to internal conflict or have the rest stay unfailingly loyal to Doflamingo, who reciprocates their affection and trust. Either route is better than the worn-out "loyal henchmen are cast aside by douchebag boss."
-
I love this chapter;
I don't care to know if baby 5 is code, real name or nick name… it just great how Oda uses thing that looked just like some kind of detail and later find new meanings next to some flashback that just give wacko character some unexpected greatness
