Beginning, middle, end of EL?
Anything at all that you vaguely remember and I'll be able to take down your stat.
I think they were in the train going to Ennis Lobby at the time.

I remember when I started, the manga was in post war (I remember seeing Sabo but that's about it. It's funny cause the first "new" chapter I read was 731, so I started and ended the series when Sabo appeared.
He was with Mr.3 and Buggy on the way to level 4 when I caught up.
I actually started watching because I watched an AMV of Kuma Taliporting the straw hats away, I was like huh? I used to watch this show, it sure got dark…. So I started watching with the English dub and was annoyed that I was forced to continue in Japanese.
But now I'm not a fan of the English Dub even if its the FUNmation one.
(I watched the 4kids dub when I was a kid)
Looks like Chapter 532, "Demon Guard Minotaurus", released on the 16th of February, 2009.

I think they were in the train going to Ennis Lobby at the time.
Cool, well that narrows it down to between Chapters 361 - 374.
Anymore specifics?

Hahaha a Sabo bookend, I love it.
I started reading Weekly Jump in 1989.
I was a big fan of Dragon Ball, but it finished in 1996. Since then, I was craving for an interesting manga.
Finally Oda showed up.
I started reading ONE PIECE at chapter 1. It seems like on 4 August 1997.
I was soon fascinated with its story and unique characters.
Lucky Roo was especially impressive for me. (although his name was not revealed at that time.)
Unlike his amusing appearances, he mercilessly shot a bandit through the head. That was shocking.
However, I didn't expect ONE PIECE would last for more than 17 years and influence my life so much…
I hope Oda will be in good health.

I have read the manga a few times from start to current since then so its hard to be more precise, they were in the train going to Ennis Lobby not there yet and the Nero fight was done with so its after that, just put a random chapter from between the trip and arriving at Ennis Lobby the dates are probably close together.
So we're talking the end/aftermath of Enies Lobby, huh.
So, the next logical question has to be, were they still actually in Enies Lobby when you caught (as best you can remember obv lol)?
I remember looking at spoilers for Enies Lobby, so probably somewhere around the beginning/midpoint that arc.

I got in to one piece during the 4 kids era but it wasn’t my favorite anime at that time dragonball was then naruto (part 1) and then somewere along the line one piece became my favorite
The first thing I remember is luffy fighting krieg in the manga. Specifically luffy breaking krieg's big ass spear.

Wooh, we have our first chapter reader.
Chapter 1, "Romance Dawn - The Dawn of the Adventure", released on the 19th of July, 1997.

Haha well that narrows it down to one and a half chapters actually.
So I'll go for the complete one, Chapter 374, "Struggle", released on the 16th of July, 2005.

Hmm, that still gives a lot of leeway, basically from Chapter 375 - 405.
I can just pick a random chapter number from that subset if you can't remember anything more specific?
I love the fact that you've stuck with the Bulma avatar btw.

That was the latest chapter out at the time, yeah?
Not just where you started reading from?

Excellent.
We'll go for a late Water 7, specifically Chapter 372, "Parage", released on June 27th, 2005.
This is the chapter where Sanji finally defeats Wanze and alters his face, as well being the debut of the Franky Kentaurus.
So yeah…it's just awesome.
I actually imagine every post you write in Bulma's voice lol
I began Reading as a 10 year old or so. I made a pretty long break between year 2007-2010 because the volumes were difficult to obtain with bi-monthly release in Sweden. So I stopped reading for a while just before the Enies Lobby showdown.
Then I sort off returned a few years ago ( not sure how many years ) after reading some of the books during Thriller Bark
at my friend's place. After that I decided to finish Enies Lobby and voilà, I was an OP fiend again…
When i caught up to the manga, it was in the Thriller Bark Arc, around the time Kuma showed up/they were fighting Oz.
I want to say chapter 478 because i believe Luffy was already in the fray.
Volume 49 was release March 4th, 2008, so i guess it was a bit before that
first time I read OP was Chapter 87 in an issue of Jump I bought on the stands in mid-May, 1999. It was also on the cover of Jump (the illustration that became the basis for the cover of Vol. 11) so I thought "it must be good if it's on the cover!" Started buying the volumes from the beginning after that.
One Piece was the first manga I caught up to and read on a weekly basis. I caught up on the chapter when they met Oimo and Kashi. Chapter 377.
Enies Lobby in 2005 did bring in a lot of new fans here, and a lot of the not so good ones because of the way that arc was, but I swear I'm not like them.
Chapter 687 was the first chapter , at the end of 2012.
At Punk hazard.:ninja:
I've knew One Piece through anime before manga.
the best I could remember, chapter about Stawhat pirates arrived at Red Line and the first mermaid introduction, Camie.
I started reading in mid High School. I remember, before I was caught up all the way, I saw a youtube video of the then current chapter, which was early Impel Down arc. I was like "whaaaaaa!?" cause Luffy's crew was essentially replaced by enemies of his past. It was cray. Still one of my favorite arcs too, if not my most favorite!

Sounds good! So that's Chapter 478, "Luffy Vs. Luffy", released on the 12th of November, 2007.

Man, I really hate that I started so late (relatively).
Chapter 87, "It's Over!", released on the 10th of May, 1999.

Hmm, that's what all the Enies Lobbers say. I'll reserve judgement, I suppose.
Anyway, that's Chapter 377, "Great Battle on the Judiciary Island", released on the 8th of August, 2005.

Haha, yeah, I can imagine the shock.
So you actually caught up while they were still in Impel Down?
First "new" chapter I read was 582: Luffy and Ace.
The feeling of reading One Piece in bulk over a week and realizing that moving forward I would have to wait 6 days(Or more depending on the break) was excruciatingly unbearable but humorous as well as I never imagined I'll find myself hooked to a manga.
Ahhh, that was back in 2010. Time passes swiftly.
yeah, or early Marine Ford arc. thats when i was caught up!

Any specifics of how early we're talking?
Like had Whitebeard joined the fray yet?
around 5 years…

I don't know haha. That was forever ago!
So yeah, I got Wolfwood to move this into the manga section.
The idea started out as being shared between manga chapters and anime episodes but it's really come down to being up to date with the chapters only.
So yeah, anybody who hasn't come across this thread in the General One Piece section, give it a go.
I've started watching anime only 2 years ago. I was really bored and asked on a forum for a serie with many episodes. I started One Piece, Naruto and Bleach simultaneously. I gave up Bleach after 10 episodes and Naruto during Naruto vs Pain. But One Piece, well, do I really need to explain…
I caught up to the anime at the beginning of Fishman Island flashback. I stayed an anime only until Luffy arrival at the plaza. My first new chapter was "counter hazard".

i caught up with the online scanlantion in thriller's bark, when moria used shadow asgard. since then i have to wait 1 week for new chapters like everyone else. i first know about one piece when my local tv (indonesia) aired the anime. the ad for the anime was so cheesy that i have no interest to watch it. i accidently watched the 3rd(?) episode about luffy's flashback with shanks. i love it and i went to the book store afterwards to buy the official local translation volume. i think the latest volume available in my country at the time is when they finally got to grand line. i read the local translation of the volume up to water 7, when garp showed up. that's when my friend told me about online scanlation. i then started read the scans from florian triangle up to shadow asgard when i finally catch up. i started browsing this forums just after the war. i didnt know about spoilers before then. just patiently wait for the chapter to come up in one manga. ah.. memories..
I started the first week of July 2001 when OnePiece #1 was released in Italian.
So I started from the very beginning and not midway.
When I started, but was unaware of the scanlation phenomen, OnePiece in japan was at chapter 189.
Having discovered Mr. 2's weakness, Sanji is able to beat him. However, he lets him live as a thanks for the good fight.
At the palace, Vivi and Chaka are discussing what they should do now when suddenly Crocodile appears.
Meanwhile, Zoro has lost Nami. Nami is running for her life, chased by Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger who prefer to fight against the weakest first.
I started watching the anime and then reading the manga…I caught up with the japanese manga in Skypiea...I think around chapter 265
I started following the anime in my native language back in 2003. At the time they were showing Kuro's arc. I kept on following it until Skypea, when I switched to the Japanese anime episodes I could find online. At some point during Water 7 I decided I should read the manga from the beginning, and I did. By the time I caught up, One Piece in Japan was at chapter 445.

Interesting thread! I remember I caught up to the anime when they get to Thriller Bark, in the episode where Hildon escorts Nami, Usopp and Chopper to Hogback's mansion. That I clearly remember. Then I read all of the manga up until the point I was in the anime, I didn't want to "spoil" myself (had never read a manga, anime-only) but I was bored without some bulky One Piece story. By the end of Thriller Bark, I know I started reading ahead of the anime and when I eventually caught up to the manga I think it was at the very beginning of Impel Down.
If I had to guess, I would say chapter 526 - "Adventure in the Great Prison", released around christmas 2008.

Ooh, only a mere 11 chapters after I myself got up to date.
It was indeed around Christmas 2008, the 22nd of December to be precise.
I first noticed One Piece due to the 4kids anime in 2004, needless to say I did not stick around. I picked it up every now and then, but started to read it religiously when I went to college at chapter 422 in 2006, when Luffy uses gear third on Lucci and Lucci turns into a leopard. I have sense made my wife read it and will use as a bed time story for my kids.

Haha, that's amazing.
So, we've got Chapter 422, "Rob Lucci", released on the 7th of August, 2006.
I first discovered One Piece by watching episode 147: liked what i saw so i downloaded a few more and, by the time i finished watching 151, i was already hooked.
I then proceeded to download all the episodes and watched them all. Since i knew the manga had to be further ahead, i couldn't help myself and started reading the manga: IIRC, it was either chapter 384 or 388 (not sure) and i think i registered here @ arlongpark right after that.
Nice thread, Robzilla!
My first new chapter was 488: Song of Life. I remember people complaining Brook's flashback was too long, hahaha.
I started with the 4kids anime when I was about 17, then purchased every english volume about a year later. I'm 28 now and love it just as much as I ever did.
For everyone who's embarrassed about reading Naruto in their younger days, it could have been worse. I only bothered to start reading One Piece after watching the Fairy Tail anime (back in late 2010, which was the Phantom Lord Guild Arc whatever, granted it wasn't complete shite back then).
I wanted to catch up on the FT manga so I got pretty excited finding out I could catch up on it on mangareader.net. Back then, One Piece was in the top 3 with Bleach and Naruto for the site (for some sad reason it's now dropped down to no. 5 ;__;) so I was curious given how childish I thought of the anime back then (only caught up on some dub aired here in Singapore - I think it might have even been the Odex instead of 4kids dub).
By the time I reached the Baratie arc I was shocked by how surprisingly mature the manga could get and have gotten hooked on it since. Caught up some time in November-December 2010 (around Chapters 605-609), just in time for the beginning of the timeskip and FI arc.
I remember just watching the anime for some time and then i discover this forum and i started reading One Piece. It was before Brook join, at the end with the fight with Moria. I remember a lot of people here that didn´t believe that Brook would join at the end. Maybe that is why i have a soft spot for Brook. It should have been around chapter 480.
I changed channels the second the 4kids crappy rap opening came on. However one time I switched channels to see Captain Kuro and Luffy's fight with him running along Luffy's elongated arm. Judging the ability to stretch from Reed from the fantastic four made me think it was lame and limited. However I then was already a frequent Naruto and Bleach reader and decided to give One Piece a try. I got to Arlong Park's end in a night and was hooked. I am a different and better person from it. I caught up to the manga at the beginning of Thriller Bark. Took me a while to make this account, but I always lurked.
I now aspire to be a sequential artist.
My first manga chapter when I started to be a regular reader….hmmm well I think it was right after the Crew got separated, Chapter 515, or 514.
I'm not on that list Mr Rob.
So when you did read through and actually catch up yourself, where was the story then?
Damn, that's hard to remember.
I've got this image that when I saw the image with the Merry on Skypiea with Klabautemann calling Usopp was from a scanlation, because the image was fuzzy and not cleaned well.
So please consider that date, at least it was from chapter 254, November 18th 2002.
I started reading One Piece for the first time when I was in middle school, so around 2004 or 5, but I didn't care too much for it. Then I got into it when I was a freshman in College in 2009 when Onemanga went down and I was using Mangastream. It was during Marineford, I believe.

I remember watching One Piece on cartoon network before Naruto ever got popular on the broadcast maybe around 2004 or 05. I would watch it every time it came on then it just vanished and I was pretty pissed also I really liked that rap song. Then I think later they brang it back with repeats but it didn't last and came back a few times but again it never lasted. But I'm glad it's back for us Americans to watch it with a proper dub.
I started watching the anime, when I finished, the anime was on Amazon Lily, then started reading the manga. I think it was some chapters into Impel Down already, but I have no idea which chapter it was.
The first contact, was around 2000-2001 in greek tv. It was a horrible dub, with luffy, named Drake, zoro was black jack, and they was trying to get to the Red line not Grand line. It was aired every weekend, and it got as far as Alabasta, were it was canceled due to extreme violence lol. I rediscovered online as a manga, in 2008, read all the chapters in a couple of days that time, and followed it ever since. At first, i at least was reading the chapters, every friday, as i remember, that was the day they was released in the old onemanga.com.
I caught up on Chapter 398, just a bit after Robin's flashback. And WHAT a chapter to catch up on. That was February 6, 2006. A few months after, I joined this forum.
Man, it's been 8 years of One Piece for me…
Haha, I remember reading One Piece on those old msn manga groups!
I started to read OP in 1999 , a friend of mine introduced me to OP , HXH and Naruto .
I was not really interested in OP at first but the humor caught my attention then I realised that each OP volume ended in a cliffhanger that kept me hooked to OP , by the time I reached arlong park I realised that I became a OP fan.
