It's really simple if you live in an area where it's available and have the money to buy it then do it. Instead of using the money you have for recreation the same way you usually do such as going to the movies or going out to eat fast food put it toward the subscription instead.

Top Cat as in the cartoon? If so i'll fix it.

@Nex:
Your are the absolute worst kind of fan, and a horribly spoiled and entitled person.
Yeah, maybe.
I mean, I've been getting pirated games long before I even realized they were, and nowadays I spend most of my gaming hours using roms and emulators (god bless those) I also never payed for a piece of music or art in general, I usually download the novels and book that I want to read instead of legally buying them, and when it comes to One Piece, the only volume I have was given to me as a present. If there's one thing, ONE single thing that I really won't be able to care about your judgment over than believe me, its this.
-
While I can't get behind Viz or Shueisha stepping up their game too much against scanlators after One Piece was cancelled in my country, I would definitely support a more strict moderation to have the illegal versions not precede the official Japanese publication. I will personally keep importing the American graphic novels anyway, because I prefer the material to the binary and it feels like the right thing to do, but I enjoy my weekly chapters way too much to wish them away completely.

I think what really gets me about this thread is that at the end of the day, spoilers ain't shit.
The spoiler treated like the secret of the universe is only as such today, tomorrow it will be nothingness.
And the true problem is that tomorrow matters more than today.

You seen me before.
Monkey King is only the latest account name, when I first snuck back in after the last ban I posed as Dragonball obsessed guy, thus "Monkey King". I had a Goku avatar and everything. -
1 - Aren't spoilers not allowed to be posted on the forums except in the thread especially for said spoilers until at least the chapter is out? I thought that's how APF has always been towards spoilers. Hence the no-spoiler-avatar rules and all.
Some people don't bother reading the rules or forget about them. And there's always the possibility of some asshole making an account just to spoil other people.
-
Dear Mr. YonkouProductions
I will agree with your stance, only because I personally hate spoilers more than anything and I will say this not only do I hate spoilers I also hate it when I accidentally spoil someone.
As someone who doesn't post much online I have to say some people just push it, I have recently been watching some AMVs on youtube due to the release of chapter 731 and of course I was not the only one doing this because the comment section of youtube was just filled with spoilers it was a very sorry sight indeed because not only would it spoil things for those that haven't read the most recent chapter of the manga but it would also spoil things for those who follow the anime. This whole episode left me really enraged and the only thing keeping me from ranting was the fact that ranting on the comment section of youtube is completely useless.Personally I love early chapters, they always come as a sweet surprise because I don't keep up with the release schedules. But seeing as most people on the internet cannot take a mature stance on the situation I guess making a obligatory release date would make sense, it would make me a bit grumpy but it would make a mountain of sense.
-
The concept of being spoiled never enters my mind.
I get as suprised on something huge reading the spoilers as i would reading the chapter
-
I actually enjoy a chapter more after being spoiled.
I dunno why. Maybe the lack of surprise makes me process everything better.

Who then is the worst kind of fan, Sir Nex?~Perhaps for you spoilers ain't shit, but there are people for whom they are. Not everyone likes knowing the ending of a story before they even start. Me, most of the time I couldn't give a crap about spoilers, but I understand those who do, thus, I don't hold it against them, and I don't make irrational demands of them.
Even if you don't care, there's this basic human trait of decency known as empathy, and you either have it or you don't. Either you're trolling right now, or you lack it.

It seems that you don't understand that there are other people in the world who don't have access to spare money for digital cartoons. I never said I was referring to myself . I have internet connection, so what? Most people have more important things to spend their money on. A lot of free time? Since when do I post here often? I do support the official release by buying some of the volumes whenever I want to, Seriously, stop acting like you know what you're talking about. It's not a matter of "fortune". Besides, I'm unable to read WSJ on what I'm using. You think you really have the right to scold others? Get lost please.
They can, like, not read it.
You say this as if there was no choice. There are reasons. Like TLC mentioned previous page, as well as I did, regional difficulty is one.
Monetary reason is the one non-valid reason. Please, spare me the SOB story of how a piss-poor child had to choose between her life-or-death lunch money and a chapter of One Piece.
I'm not telling you not to read scanlations or "pay up, bitch".
I'm telling you to stop giving these complete horseshit excuses.
Because, at the end of the day, there's no need for you to justify it - especially with a BS explanation. All you had to say was
@Caesar:I don't have to pay for something that I can get for free.
Instead of the utterly eye-rolling BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN nonsense.

@Nex:
So, you would tell people who only read the official release to avoid AP five days a week, or avoid any friends whom might read scanlations, or possibly stay off facebook, youtube, or any other possible place someone might mention One-Piece.
Avoiding the spoiler section is easy. And scanlations (which much of the board uses) are up a few hours after the spoiler.
If you're waiting for the official american digital release or the japanese physical, well, we have a subsection just for those fans. If you only want to support the official release and only buy the translated english volumes or watch the anime version, great! But those are a year behind, and that kind of stuff just isn't going to keep easily on a One Piece message board.
I buy all the physical volumes. I have the entire English run, and a smattering of the japanese tanks, all the color walks, the games, etc. I support where I can for what I like. But I also read the scans because… its up to date and its where the community is.
Yes, if you're off looking at a message board for Super Mario Brothers and the day the new Game of Thrones book comes out someone yells completely off topic that "X kills Y!" that's not your fault and it was an asshole thing to do. But if you're reading a Game of Thrones discussion thread and the same thing happens? Well, still a jerk move, but also much more your own choice. When you choose to come to a message board, that actively discusses the topic of the series you're interested in... then yes, the conversation is going to be up to date. Even if you're on the board visiting other sections, its easy to avoid the spoilers, I do it almost every week. And some weeks you're in the mood to get a snippet, then a raw, then a horrible translation, and then a good translation, gives a variety of different experiences.
Granted, this particular week I would have preferred the narrative reveal of character X that doesn't quiiite give away who it is till the end rather than the spoiler just labeling who they are even when they first appear as a shadowy figure, but oh well... thats something you get and then immediately re-read the chapter anyway.
As for this week's particular chapter reveal, well... we all knew Koala was going to be back again some day, I'm not sure why such a huge fuss is being made about her appearing.

To its credit, AP handles this issue very well, but, then again, how many people are still active here that are WSJ only readers? That sub forum's only traffic is the Viz Media thread which was a carry over from before even SJA.
Yes, if you're off buying Harry Potter at midnight release and someone drives by and yells at you "X kills Y!" that's not your fault, but when you choose to come to a message board, that actively discusses the topic of the series you're interested in… then yes, the conversation is going to be up to date. Even if you're on the board visiting other sections, its easy to avoid the spoilers, I do it almost every week.
If you're on facebook, and you've "liked" One-Piece and the the page posts about XXXXXX and you happen to see it while scrolling through the news feed, is that your fault? Yes, you could block them, but what if you like their posts largely.

The thing is most people have no regard for the moments when they accidentally spoil people. I must say that YouTube comments are a sorry sight when you go to any video that may have the slightest reference to an occurrence in the manga. Anime only fans are absolutely screwed over all the time because they have to be 24/7 on the lookout for the most obscure spoilers.
With regards to early chapters shared by scanlations, it is up to you whether you want to read them or not but as you said the majority of the internet will start posting photos/tweets/comments/statuses about the chapter within 1 hour of release. Good luck to those trying to handle 5 days of that. WSJ has a release schedule set for every Monday in Japan (and the simultaneous magazine follows that) but the distribution process means leaks can occur from the Chinese simultaneous physical release as well as the Japanese physical release and as I've reiterated before, people taking these unofficial releases as a legitimiser for spoiling and sharing images from chapters is really the key problem on the side of the community and is something fans can work on without blaming any other 3rd party since it is an alteration to how we behave as a fandom on the internet.
-
In the end, there's really nothing we can do about the issues. If Shueisha didn't care then fuck it, it's like telling people to don't take money in the street.
And sometimes, the one who post the spoiler isn't even an OP fan/tard.
-
Monetary reason is the one non-valid reason. I'm not telling you not to read scanlations or "pay up, bitch". I'm telling you to stop giving these complete horseshit excuses. Instead of the utterly eye-rolling BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN nonsense.
You're the only one taking it that way. All I did was suggest that there might a possibility that was a problem for some people. Even If It weren't, who'd need an excuse for you? No one has to give or provide an "excuse" as to why they didn't buy something that has nothing to do with you. Please tell me Aohige, please tell me about the time you met every one piece fan that failed to buy WSJ. Please tell me how you know that someone didn't say "I spend the rest of my spending money on this every week, therefore I won't be able to buy WSJ". Quit your bitching, get over it, and stop acting like you know everything.
-
Viz Media does not make available legal methods for me to read One Piece (and other manga I follow) in my region. My only option is to read online which is made available via scanlators. While I do agree that scanlators make money off something they haven't created, something that they own no rights to, they bring to us, fans who live outside the U.S.A/Canada region where there is no WSJAlpha and such.
I do agree, if people have the legal alternative they should support something they like, I support One Piece because I love One Piece. I own Volume 01 to 65 (have to collect the other released volumes), and support One Piece in the small way I can, by purchasing the Viz published english volumes which I do have access to without having to pay exorbitant shipping rates. But people who think that "it is free why do I pay for it" are the worst kind of people, those who enjoy others hard work while sitting on their asses thinking that the world is going to serve them shit on a silver platter. These type of guys are generally also the kind who pirate everything else, but sadly there is nothing we can do for such people, they'll suffer on their own eventually when the law's get stricter.

The point he's trying to convey is that if you have an internet connection and other such luxuries that truly impoverished people don't have then chances are you also have $2.99/month to spare on supporting the industry. I reckon we all blow more than $2.99/month on less important things. He's correct in his assertion that "I don't have enough money" is a bad excuse; $2.99/month isn't going to break the bank unless you're already poverty stricken. The only way that excuse is valid is if you're a dependent and your parent/guardian refuses to supplicate you, or you're currently unemployed.
It boils down to you simply not wanting to pay for something you're used to getting for free. This is coming from a guy who has no shame in illegally downloading music! Instead of making excuses just own it and don't be ashamed.
-
Seriously! There are so many posts here about personal attitude on spoilers and whether or not one cares about paying for their manga, a lot of which seem to imply that if you're okay with it, everyone should be. What this thread is about - as far as I understand it - is respecting that other people don't always share that attitude and that you can't force your opinion on others. In cases like this, spoiler-avoiders can hardly walk around anti-spoiling spoiler-readers, whereas spoiler-readers can spoil spoiler-avoiders, so here it is the side with power that needs to be the better man and stop abusing it. Most spoiler-readers make their choice for themselves and keep from making it for others, and that is respect-worthy. This is talking to the ones that don't: Realize that we have all made a choice and respect the ones that chose differently.
-

Own what? I've never made an excuse. I've already said that I don't buy it because it's free. None of this even has anything to do with me.This Aohige guy is saying that everyone that has a computer in their home just has to have money for WSJ without bothering to think that maybe someone has parents that don't supply them with money or someone's unemployed like you said. Why are you making this my thing, you brought up the stupid excuse.
I don't give two shits if someone is content with not paying for something they don't want to pay for.
That's their thing. I'm telling you to stop making up stupid shit to justify it.
Only thing I did was pointing out that the excuse of affordability that YOU came up, is entirely laughable.
I don't know why you would equate that to claims of clairvoyance.Yo, is English not your thing?
Because you sound either irrelevant or really, really incoherent.

SCAN ME UP SCOTTY.Which earlier statement? Because this doesn't work as a qualifier for anything having to do with spoilers.
And that's all fine and dandy, but the real question is: are you subscribed to WSJ?
If you're still choosing scanlations over a $3/month srvice which is available where you live, and you definitely have the money for, then you're still part of the problem. -

I still maintain that the issue isn't so much one of people who go to One Piece forums, but more one for people who DO avoid that stuff but get spoiled anyways, be it accidentally or otherwise, by friends and acquaintances who are ignorant. Avoiding the spoilers from a spoiler thread is easy because everyone KNOWS they are spoilers. But tons of people seem completely ignorant of the fact that scanlation leaks are in fact leaks
-

TBH, "I don't have the money" excuse isn't really an excuse. Some things have different values depending on the person. I have the money to buy a subscription, but since I don't want it, it's not worth the $3. It's too expensive because it doesn't have much value to me. Add something to it that I find appealing then maybe, just maybe, I might be willing to pay such a hefty price for something with so little value. Id rather buy a new game instead since I've been wanting to play a new game. I don't rent games. I rather have an actual hard copy for myself. Also, just because I don't pay for a subscription, I still buy the volumes. If Viz brought back their hard copies back, no doubt will I subscribe right away. I rather have the actual thing in my hands than online.
Keep in mind that this was just an example. -
This is my favorite thread on here right now.
-
I don't really understand why some people are SO pissed about spoilers.
Does a few bite-sized sentences really take away from the surprise you feel when you see the actual manga?
If the spoiler caused you to be severely disappointed in the chapter itself when you read it, then that probably means that the author didn't manage to make the moment awesome through the execution of visual, dialogue, what have you.In my mind, its like seeing a movie adaptation of a book you read; you go in having the knowledge of what happened, and you either still like it because the film was great, or hate it because it was shit-movie.
-
The coolest thing about this thread is that the sort of awful internet social justice rule book is being followed in this thread step by step, word by word, cliche by cliche. Except instead of racism this is about spoilers.

Hey hey, everyone, there is a "Problem". And it's you. Your spoiler privilige is oppressing my status as a person overly obsessing about a small thing and not also taking basic steps to avoid it because I apparently can't stay off certain areas of social media until my conveniently phony moral colored means of reading about it are available. And you have to change. You need to be educated.

So basically you're saying people have to stay off the internet for 5 days each week if they read the official release and get spoiled by scanlation readers. I'd agree if you're just talking about the spoiler threads and such, but this thread is about people who read it through viz media's official release getting spoiled almost a week before it's available by people who don't realize that scanlations are pretty much spoilers in and of themselves
-
Why doesn't Viz try to negotiate with Shuesha to allow them to release chapters a week earlier than them?
Edit- Ah. I see. Then deal with it, I guess.
-
@Nex:
This has not once been about avoiding the spoiler section.
But that's just this site. This discussion is much larger than Arlong Park, it's discussing it on the whole. Yes, the board here, even those of us with WSJ available in our countries (and even if we're paying for it) still read scanlations. Some because they can't wait, and others like me, who, got tired of being spoiled week in and week out.
I have a large group of friends who read One-Piece on facebook and in real life. If I were sticking to the official translations only I would have to avoid talking to them most of the week. That's not something that's as easily mitigated.
Why? Because your friends read the scans? then… whats the problem? You all get the release at the same time.
I'm a MOD on this site. I get notifications to clean up spoiler leaks or deal with crap in the spoiler threads and I've been here almost seven years... and I still have almost never been spoiled on the latest chapter when I wasn't in the mood for it... and I practically live on this site.
Now, would this be as much of an issue if the source of the spoilers wasn't an illegal scanlation? No. But since it is negatively affecting the people who are trying to only support the official release, then it is a problem.
The staff does what it can to crack down on people that leak spoilers before the scalatation gets released. Spoiler courtesy is largely upheld throughout the site, for other movies, books, and tv shows as well. The community is pretty good about it generally.
There's nothing we can do to crimp the actual activity of the scanlators. Just… support the official release if you can and that's an issue for you. (it is for me(
To its credit, AP handles this issue very well, but, then again, how many people are still active here that are WSJ only readers? That sub forum's only traffic is the Viz Media thread which was a carry over from before even SJA.
That's mostly because 1) the forum has a worldwide audience, not just american
2) when they started Alpha it was nearly a full month behindIf the viz release was a little faster and widespread, or the scans were a little slower, we'd enforce and encourage it even more. But with a week gap its… still not happening. It would be nice and ideal to do otherwise, but...
If you're on facebook, and you've "liked" One-Piece and the the page posts about XXXXXX and you happen to see it while scrolling through the news feed, is that your fault? Yes, you could block them, but what if you like their posts largely.
Then that's part and partial a piece of the risk of being in a community. Like I said before. You go places where theres a discussion on a topic… expect there to be discussion on the topic! You add a lot of OP activity to all the sites you go to... then of course there's going to be OP activity on all those sites.
You can't say "I love being surrounded by fans and the experience of being crazily induldged in the experience of the fandom" and then complain about the fandom being eager for news. It's part of it.
If you're hanging out with other people that read and discuss a thing right when its first available, then thats the crowd and thats who you have to keep up with, and thats your choice to stay up with that community.
I had to read the last couple Harry Potter books day of release for that reason. I get the new pokemon games when they come out. Etc. Stuff I care less about... (movies in theatres and such) I can wait for. It is what it is.
No. Just stay away from sites/sections you know are super heavy active about a certain topic… if that's such a huge deal to you.
Or jump into the old chapter discussions 5 days later when there's already 50 pages of discussion and just ignore the next week's. (Even here, in the manga forum, barring topic titles like "Were you surprised when X happened", active discussion on a chapter often doesn't leave the chapter its in very quickly.)
Or... read the early version, then pay for the official in higher quality a few days later if thats a personal priority.
@•Ace•:
Why doesn't Viz try to negotiate with Shuesha to allow them to release chapters a week earlier than them?
Because releasing it officially before the magazine comes out would hurt even more than the scans do. And the Japanese market is their primary audience, because they don't care about the thousands of american fans, but the millions of japanese are relevent. Because the magazine is the main thing, not the digital. (Old publishing habits die hard.)
-
@•Ace•:
Why doesn't Viz try to negotiate with Shuesha to allow them to release chapters a week earlier than them?
I really don't see how this would be viable for them…

I'd agree if you're just talking about the spoiler threads and such, but this thread is about people who read it through viz media's official release getting spoiled almost a week before it's available by people who don't realize that scanlations are pretty much spoilers in and of themselves
People don't need to stay "off the internet", if everywhere you go lets say facebook, twitter, insertsitenamehere and all places you are just getting spoiled then YOU are doing something wrong. YOU need to make sure YOU don't get spoiled, does a fan of a movie or game blame others for spoiling them (due to different release dates for regions)? NO.
If your internet life and social media is filled with people who spoil your manga experience, then YOU are doing something wrong.

Honestly, I think if people are getting spoiled via a One Piece forum that is to a large extent their own fault. I think the problem is when people start being spoiled by friends and others who don't realize there's an issue in the first place. I've pointed out that it does happen as well. And honestly, I think one of the hard parts is that there aren't many places people can go to discuss the official release that doesn't run the risk of spoilers in some ways. The fact that scanlations are released so early means if someone wants to discuss One Piece and doesn't want spoilers, they will most likely only have a two day window each week to do so. AP probably isn't the place to fix the issue though

See, but it doesn't need to be filled with them. And I'm not saying it's the end of the world. But say you have a brother who likes One Piece who occasionally posts spoilers on his facebook page. Is the person supposed to block their family member to avoid spoilers? Because nobody is going to do that, because nobody really thinks spoilers are that big an issue. But just big it's not some huge issue doesn't mean it can't frustrate people

I agree that it's weird, but I know similar stuff happens. It could also be messaging people to ask them their thoughts on the events of a chapter that hasn't been officially released. A lot of times it's probably done in ignorance, but that won't make it less frustrating to those who don't want to get spoiled

I sometimes discuss new chapters over Facebook; I have a few like-minded friends who don't frequent any dedicated forums like AP.
And I assure you both that I look nothing like that dashingly handsome gentleman in the picture above.
