@Aaronrules380:
I wonder if he's also part of the "nakama is a sacred untranslatable word" group. If he isn't, then hes a huge hypocrite, but if he is LOL
if i may get into this argument,why is thinking nakama is inappropriate and shichibukai is appropriate hypocritical?
firstly,they are different things.shichibukai is a Title,wheras nakama is just a word.and i think the reason for not translating Titles come pretty close to the reason you would not translate names.
also,while nakama can mean different things in different contexts,it can still be translated quite accurately.however,shichibukai on the other hand(correct me if i'm wrong) literally means "seven armed seas",which is pretty weird sounding in english.and using warlord would pretty much seem forced.
nevertheless,even if it can be translated differently,i personally prefer titles/names to be left untranslated.i don't see anything weebo about that.about the admiral's nicknames,i think it would be okay to make an exception to them,since they can be translated very easily and they sound quite normal translated.(unless their names have some double meaning,or some reference?)
the same goes for attack names.i prefer them remain as it is in the panels,with a TN note explaining them underneath.IMO,attack names are often quite stylised names,which are often made to sound certain way intentionally.they also often have cultural or mythological references,which are often lost in translation.heck,some of them aren't even japanese,which would make translating them make them lose the effect the author was hoping for.for example,sanji's attacks being translated would diminish the effect of him being made to be French.(as was even stated in an SBS)
