Wow I never thought of comparing Coby and Shirahoshi. I guess the reason I like her is becaue, she reminds me of him. I really do want to see her become strong and capable of standing on her own.
Chapter 653: The hero's hat

And they both have pink hair.
That too lol. I personally like both of them. Ussop is probably my favorite character in the crew development-wise and he could get really obnoxious too back in East Blue, but look how far he's come.

Stronger but still panics all the time?
-
Boreass way to end decent arc. Oh well, at least to the New World, finally! May it be better than promised super adventure at FI! Gotta hope G5 already at next chapter.
-
Stronger but still panics all the time?
I feel like the whining is toned down from back then. Oh, he's still cowardly, but nearly as much and he can do the things he brags about at this point hence his fight with Daruma(was that his name?).

Well, that path started when they got the Little Garden and then meeting the two Giants on Seven. You can see the first notice of his growing strength during both the Cipher 9 battles and Thriller Bark, then he kinda reverted again until the time skip. I'm kinda glad though. :)
We're getting off topic though.. back to the chapter!
-
Hahahaha, Oda's plot-fixing floaty wood resurfaces (literally). Read the SBS about Mr. Three here (http://arlongpark.net/Manga/SBS/25, for Chapter 230).
Franky found Plot Hax wood chips!
lol yeah it instantly reminds me of that too. Can't believe Oda actually made canon stuff out of it XD
-
Only Oda could make the random into canon.
-
This is like a Bleack chapter. NOTHING HAPPENED!
Bullshit! We learned about the new log pose and the reason for it. This was the official end of the arc, what the fuck did you expect? Them not to say goodbye and shove off?
This is far from a detergent chapter.
-
Decent chapter, but pretty much every single page was promising a future payoff. The island being destroyed, meeting Jinbe again, Luffy wanting to see Shanks, and Shirahoshi (who will surely be crucial in the great war that comes at series' end) not to mention Caribou is still loose with his important info… And of course the reverie, but I never thought that was going to be in this arc, it seemed like an end series thing too.
The idea of fishmen going to the surface to get "hero hats" seems to bode badly as well. Rather than being a cute little side note like usual, there's an element of danger and risk in there.
And like I've been saying for months, arc ain't over until Nami gets the new logpose explained ot her, and lo, its the very last thing.
This feels like the most incomplete arc Oda has ever done, and its felt that way for a long time. Its one thing to start dropping in new plot threads at the end of an arc... but there's just a TON that aren't really resolved yet. I'm sure it'll fit fine when the series is all said and done, but thats probably 10+ years away.
I wonder if we're going to catch up to Jinbe when the crew actually encounters Big Mom in a hundred chapters and find he's already been there and gotten into trouble, or if he's going to get a cover story after we finish catching up and running through the usual 10 playing with animals pieces? (We still have Water 7, Thriller Bark, and Shabondy... but thats not a whole lot left since he's been skipping villains and characters that'll reappear later.)
-
I learned a lot from this chapter plus it was very entertaining I don't understand why ppl bash this chapter :P
-
Rising to the surface shouldn't take as long as it did when they were descending towards FI. I'm highly anticipating the meeting with Smoker to be more comedic in the beginning than serious. I predict the SH's will escape the attention of the fleet, but Luffy will undo all of that with excitement and whatnot, and from there the chase begins.
So I take it that Oda is still going to have certain members of the crew change their attire from time to time like in the past. He's doing it already with Robin, and a bit with Nami with her hair (not really a change, but something different).
-
Kinda sad we didn't see some other areas of the Fishman Island. Maybe next chapter??? I doubt it.
-
Disappointing way to end the Chapter. I wanted more undersea adventures, more non-fodder Fishman or Merfolk and a short little story.
So again, no explaining what became of Caribou? Guess it'll be 20 or so Chapters when we see him again.
-

I'm confident Oda is going to be deluged with SBS questions about the dojo and we'll get a bit about it then,
-
@RobbyBevard:
I'm confident Oda is going to be deluged with SBS questions about the dojo and we'll get a bit about it then,
That's probably the best we can hope for, nothing to worry about really. I'm sure we'll hear more about it or possibly see it in a cover story with Jinbe or something.
I think this will feel like a more complete or better arc when the entire series is finished, I'm not complaining though, I enjoyed it a lot. I don't understand why it gets all the hate that it gets.
-
A very warming chapter. Love the interaction beetwen the Strawhatsas always_. This_ is the One Piece I know… And seriously, comparing this chapter with bleach's is ridiculous. If you have taken a certain chapter from marineford arc, I'd have agreed.
Shirley and Keimie's statements about the prediction made the chapter for me. Shit is far from being over, guys (just like Enel and his spacey minions).
What chapter are you talking about from marineford?
I loved this chapter so much. Sad that we didn't see a few things - like Den and such - but the story isn't over in FI at all - they will return (and very soon I believe).
Jimbei will buy a straw hat>give it to kid>stolen from kid by someone/kid goes bad> Fishman Island goes plop. I reckon. Looking forward to next week - so many possibilities! -

It's very much like Skypiea. Skypiea had many little things which were relevant later on rather than some big plot points like the more plot relevant stuff in Enies Lobby or Marineford.
Dials, foreshadowing with the Klabautermann, Mantra, the poneglyph and small character changes. It all lead up to Water 7 which was amazing. Same goes for Thriller Bark. It had little things and same goes for this Fishman Island arc. That's why I think right now people appreciate Skypiea considerably more than back when it came out, I guess. I personally think this was a good arc for what it did. I really enjoyed the very multi-sided look at racism. -
Franky's hair looked funny this chapter lol.
Boy I'm glad I won't be seeing Shirahoshi whine anymore.
-
Glad this arc is finally over. Pda has been setting up everything in the last 3 chapters, so expect the NW arcs to be amazing. I give the Fishermen island arc 5/10.
-
Oda is one mean old man! I'm not disappointed Jinbe isn't traveling with them, but I whole heartedly expected it. Guess we'll have a few arcs before they meet up with him again along with Big Mom. But still when Luffy yelled his name I took it as "don't forget, take care of business and then you're with us!" and Jinbe just nods in agreement.
So many things left open in this arc. Caribou, the destruction and migration of the island, the dojo, pinky promises, etc. I don't see the story waiting 10 plus years to solve all of it.
-

-
People hated Skypeia at the time because it was really long (two years… and at the time it was 1/3 of the series!) had a LOT of worldbuilding, and was unlike anything else in the story with little obvious connection to the overall plot.
Now it's more like 1/7 of the entire series and shrinking all the time to "just another arc" and some of the pieces set up then have been played since. (Also, it reads waaaay better after you've seen the flashback once and have context for the whole thing.)
FI is similar, in that started a lot of things that it hasn't finished in its own arc. And, Oda was incredibly sloppy with the start of the arc and really rushed it. Doesn't help that Hody was INTENTIONALLY a terrible and empty villain.
-
Hm, that Den not even appeared in this chapter, makes this character seem so useless…hm, maybe we see him again later, when Shirley's prediction happens and all that, so rather at the end of One Piece.
Also Megalo and Hoe were missing this chapter. :( -

What explaining do you want? We know that his crew is already waiting for him at the port.

I learned a lot from this chapter plus it was very entertaining I don't understand why ppl bash this chapter :P
Do you wanna know why? Read my previous post in this thread and you'll have a glimpse of the answer…
-
Ok, here I go…
The end chapter of FI. It begins with Madame Shirley pointing to us that the prediction she made was no where near fulfilled which I must admit, thought myself was. (Thought it was all just a big metaphor and that Luffy already "brought everything back to zero = destruction of FI) And boy was I wrong. It looks like it is 100% physical thing and that FI will end up being destroyed...Which is something to remember for the future date.
Also the way the entire scene was done makes you realize that in most likely scenario it will be Luffy who somehow ends up destroying it.
Back to the crew we go, as they are saying their goodbyes and getting ready to depart.
I was a bit surprised about Zoro's comment to Sanji about staying on FI. I know those two are constantly at each-others throat however was not expecting those kind of statements...
Now to one of the important bits of this chapter and must say the part I disliked as well. As the crew is having their antics we see the King and the minister talking about whether or not they should tell the SH's about the bomb that was accidentally sent to Big Mom.
Now it is frustrating as it is at times that the SH's are just about the only crew who has made it so far which is so clueless and gets surprised and whatnot at dozen occasions and even if someone from the crew knows something (like Robin) they tend to not let us know...
But I really got that big question mark and the desire to smack them both when they said that they will not mention the thing to them, which they do after they see Usopp and Chopper in their "I am going to die mode"
I find it not only annoying but also unfair and in general quite hypocritical thing to do. Now not only they "did" it, they also hid that fact from the SH's so the entire crew will have no idea about it when BM and her crew rain anger upon them for it.
Well we move on to the part I really enjoyed.
New Log poses ehh? Interesting stuff 3 log poses each locks on its own island and than you choose and as a plus they even "tell" you the danger level of an island you are going to.
This really makes traveling more fun and actually lets you pick to which Island you go. In the first part (Grand Line) you just chose the first island and than...you had to follow the path 1 log gave.
Now besides the interesting log poses, the entire scene was hilarious. Luffy casually overhearing the explanation, grasping it in a second and immediately declaring they will follow the middle log pose because it is shaking like crazy. (loved it)
The interesting part of this entire gag scene is imo, when Nami says that she will be choosing the route from this point on and Luffy standing up to her and let her know who is the captain here
(so it will be really interesting to see which route they go, if they will follow the creepy island it will indicate that Luffy truely is the boss, not only in name, of the crew and all who have up till this point claimed it is Nami who in fact has them on a leash will have to bow down. As it will prove Luffy always does things as he sees fit, he may bow down once in a while but only on things he doesn't find really important.
Well however, if they choose any of the remaining two routes it will prove the opposite - so it is something I am really interested in and the entire scene was something I really enjoyed)
The comic effect of the scene is doubled and than tripled with Brooks Requiem comment and than the wtf haircut of Franky which I see no real reason for...heh
So Franky says off we go and they start saying goodbyes... It would be good if we got a clarification on what Princes exactly said to them: Manga reader and Mangastream have it different. One says: "We will have the strongest fleet" second says army...
Than comes the most curious part of the entire chapter for me.
Jinbe comes Luffy looks at him, he looks back and Luffy says Yeah (like they understand each-other) Does it mean they will meet in the NW...?
Idk, but a bit strange...
And they are off,...but not before they make a pinky promise with the princess
Last but not least from the FI a really nice touch about how a boy wants a Straw Hat because for him it represents a hero. And later on his dad thinking not all humans are bad after all. It sums up the arc nicely and together with Kings comment about the debt tells us, that FI is a big ally of SH's and that Luffy is indeed becoming a grand character, a character which will influence generations after him...Well for the grand finale we get the spread with each of them making a declaration, just like they did before entering the Grand Line.
Luffy states he will surely meet with Shanks and that he is well aware of the danger he is putting his crew in to (means he is also really confident about his strength)
Kind of the same goes with Zoro and his simplistic comment about cutting everything which can easily be translated that he believes he is strong enough to overcome any obstacle thrown in his way.
Brooks comment is really lol, as I was expecting him to say something about his music, but I guess it is kind of sweet as well. Franky comments that the ship is one of a kind best ship in the world basically. Nami that as far as travelling goes, her agency will make sure they reach the wanted destination. Choppers comment was the one I really liked the most. Simple yet it tells much. He says they can fight as much as they want, get injured as much as they want, he will fi them with no problem and this I think is really an important bit, if we know how on the Grand Line through out the journey we saw them some what crippled because of fatigue and injures, especially thinking about Zoro here, if Chopper manages to patch up zoro every single time and ensure the guy is fit for the next chalange that in itself is a wast addition to the strength of the crew.
Sanji-s comment was the most out of context for me, even though he is a cook by profession. I expected him to say something about Black leg Sanji, or anything that is not realted with cooking and more with strength...
Usopp comment is really No Comment as far as I am concerned. For majority of you I know that you really enjoy seeing more or not "the old " Usopp with his antics, well I personally really liked the Usopp which was at first introduced after the 2 years time skip, as a guy who is not afraid anymore.
But now that we see him panicing together with chopper once again... and than making this statement it is like he hasn't made it at all for me. Like he was blowing in the wind.
Talking about it...you need to act like that as well (I really like Usopp after 2 years but that is the only part which has disapointed me)
And in the end Robin. I guess it is her style to just smile, but come on Robin it would be appropriate to say something...I hope they resurface next chapter, as it will be I am sure amazing ;)
Well that is it, my summary for those who cared to read it. I will read yours with interest as always
-
Ah I see, lol well to each their own. I enjoy the journey regardless and support Oda's direction in taking the story.
@Fleet_Admiral_Akainu:Do you wanna know why? Read my previous post in this thread and you'll have a glimpse of the answer…
-
@Blue-san: Pretty sure the comic Luffy/Nami 'I'm the captain here' thing has happened several times before I wouldn't read too much into it(especially with that recent Jinbei scolding back in the palace. Luffy only goes captain mode (consciously or not) in 'serious' situations for the rest he is bossed around and thank God for that otherwise the crew will die lol). Perhaps the crew members increasingly calling him captain on the other hand (Nami at Shabaondy,Usopp here) might indicate that they are taking his position even more seriously since the time skip like Zoro recommended back in Water seven.
But it's true that it will be interesting to see the decision making for which course to follow from now I mean they will always have to choose between three islands from now on until raftel?I hope it wn't be the same choosing gag scenes at the end of every arc. Maybe something will happen to change that.
@Wagomu:Like I said in the NN thread why is the possibility that the time they meet again will be to fight side to side against Big Mam disregarded?Jinbei's crew's lives are still in her hands she won't weaken her fleet's power by happily letting go of crewmembers Kidd just sank two of her ships.
-
Thanks blue-san… it was very interesting summary.. i will be looking forward to your posts.. :) ..
-
Really funny and somewhat informative chapter! Can´t wait for more (as always :))
-
Bah, more delay on the merger with that blasted beluga. I guess in a sense it will be nice to see the crew go through a New World arc as the crew they were before the New World, but it's going to feel so cheap to see Jinbei float along just to say "Hey, Luffy! I hear you finally beat Big Mam. So, I've finished up what I needed to do, are you still looking for another interracial bridge in your crew?"
-
Awww,it was sweet how they all did the pinky touch promise with Shira, like how the Neptune siblings did with the Queen.
I liked Usopp and Chopper getting depressed
and more navigating explanation about what makes navigating the new world so horriable. And the explanation on how the resurface was great, cause that always bugged me on how people controll their ships to resurface

I'm sure Jinbe will get to Big Mom before them. And trouble to match.

I don't see it happening like that. My guess is that Jinbe's going to play a big part in the Big Mam arc (given that his duty involves leaving her service in a way that doesn't piss her off enough to take it out on his former crew), and will probably participate in it like Franky did in Ennies lobby even if he's technically not part of the crew yet.
Also, he really can't leave with the Straw Hats right now, as being seen with them would be really bad. Its difficult to avoid pissing off a Yonkou if you travel with the pirate group that just declared war on her after all, and Jinbe's probably trying to hide his connection with the SH until after he's officially left Big Mam.
-
that was really good chapter, i liked the new log pose and the explanation of how difficult the navigation in the new world is and knowing luffy, they will always choose the hardest way :D and some interactions were priceless
-
Hmm, I thought the arc was overall satisfying. Obviously there's going to be a lot of foreshadowing to future events and encounters. Sure the New Fishman Pirates weren't the most memorable supporting villians, but supporting villians rarely are and the deliriously enjoyable Vander Decken made up for them. I personally though Hody measured up to past "evil" antagonists, and was probably the most delusional since Enel. Though I imagine he was too thuggish for many tastes.
Don't see anything wrong with the bouyant wood–What would be the most natural way for a ship to float upward while still coated for submerging?
I also see no problem with Fishmen venturing to the surface. One side has to have some faith in the other if there is any hope for reconciliation. Obviously, the Sabaody Archipelago isn't going to be on their list of stops, as it's the hub of the slave trade market but the good will is what's important. It won't be without it's dangers, but this will likely be happening coinciding with Neptune's efforts for peace and recognition with the surface world. Really, that was one of the most significant transition the arc set into motion.
The chapter was funny in typical One Piece style with all the fun, nuanced character interactions that the series excels at. Chapter was informative and the usual farewell to one adventure while the crew looks forward to (or possibly dreads in Chopper & Usopp's case) the next. Interesting to hear Brook almost 4th wall comment on Luffy's need to keep his promise to Shirahoshi, because Luffy's got MANY promises he has yet to fulfill, and Oda's readership expects Luffy (and his crew, in effect) to stay true to his word.
-
@Barbe:
On the middle panel of this page : http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/653/4
Neptune is taller than Shirahoshi ?it's likely due to some ditance between them. Neptune had said that Shirahoshi is same size has he is, but it could be a few feet difference. Of course for people as tall as they are a few feet to them is like a few inches to us.
I mean they will always have to choose between three islands from now on until raftel?I hope it wn't be the same choosing gag scenes at the end of every arc. Maybe something will happen to change that.
For the most part but look at the image of a map behind the minister, at one point before Raftel, it narows and there is only two islands to choose from.
I don't think it can tell danger as in PEOPLE, but as in how unstable the island is. Take for instance Long Ring Long Island and the island where Lightning rains down. Long Ring would have a completely stable needle always because nothing unique weather wise happens. Meanwhile thunder island would probably shake**. Or think of the island Luffy trained on, it chnaged seasons like mad, that could change the crap that woul make the pose shake.**
Nice comparision idea! If we compare where the Strawhats went, then it would be steady at the okama island where Sanji was sent (no Sanji beign forced to wear a dress is NOT dangerous), it would shake slightly to the island where Franky went with its danger of freezing climate and cyborg animals, then Shake like hell to the Boin Archipelago, where Usopp face man eating plants, insects size houses that'll eat men, and the plants that gave an aroma that would attract sea monsters to the 'islands'.
So its the ISLAND that is unstable and thus potentially more dangerous, not whether Kaidou is chilling on an island or not.
AND as with evolution, to survive a more dangerous land, you need to adapt, thus the animals, plants or natives on the island should have adapted and will likely be stronger as wellI agree with that.
I think my favourite part was when he mentioned Shanks. We'd been thinking about it in the back of our minds this whole time and Luffy brought it to the forefront, people are tearing this chapter apart because of plot development but there are lots of subtleties in this chapter that you can only appreciate if you've read this thing from the start and still now and then skip back to get that overwhelming feeling of romance again.
I know, I waited so see if Usopp would make a coment since his dad is on Shanks' crew, but he didn't.
LOL Has luffy ever wrapped himself around his other crewmates, I think this is the first time we are seeing it its quite hilarious XD
He's wrapped his arms, but this is first time he used his neck.
Wow I never thought of comparing Coby and Shirahoshi. I guess the reason I like her is becaue, she reminds me of him. I really do want to see her become strong and capable of standing on her own.
Neither did I, but on thinking back on it, Coby used to act same as her and he's faced his fears and grew a lot since then. So there is hope that Shirahoshi is able to keep her promise to not be such a weakling. Well she has been isolated for nearly 10 years in a tower, so she doesn't have much experience with life outside the tower.
-
It was so good, I was smiling through the whole chapter!
-
Nice to see Oda's SBS creation of Incredibly-Floaty-Wood finally pays off 478 chapters later!!
-
I love the Luffy Nami thing. I've been waiting for Luffy to tie up at least one of the straw hats with his powers since the series began. Now I have only one more thing I want to see Oda draw before everything is over. Luffy stuffing someone in his cheeks like a chipmunk. It's so over the top it would be hilarious.
A) Luffy eating so fast he inhales someone or.
B) Luffy needs to sneak a group of them into somewhere where only one person is allowed. So he's like get into my belly … then I'll vomit you out. Which gets him a kick to the head. -
I liked this arc overall but I think it could have been sooooooo much more. I appreciate that most of the issues with it will probably resolved when we get back to it in 10+ years but that doesn't change the fact that it was mostly rushed and sloppily done at the start (though Oda finally started to fix his pacing in the third act).
I really hope that the rush in the beginning was only because Oda was anxious to get to the New World and not to finish the series though>.>
-

I just realized I skipped that speech bubble. hahaha.

I liked the send off. it was funny and had some great lines.Luffy x Nami in this chaper I liked very much. she didn't freak with his hands all wraped around her. I'm still wondering what's holding up jimbe that would have been a great time to join. And lastly luffy lleaving a princess with such great memories and wanting to meet each other again.
-
Ok, here I go…
cut for size
Just going to post on a few things I thought differently than you.
1. Chopper's proclomation. I really like what you said about him being able to fix Zoro up. Not only would this show Chopper becoming an amazing doctor it would also get rid of the crews handicap they seemed to have every other arc from Zoro not being full str. BUT I also took his comment "fight all you want" as him embracing his monster, and that he is game for fighting too.
2. pretty sure its army, no way they are making themselves a strong fleet for luffy, its to protect themselves.
3. Luffy and crew have fought before about where to go, and other things. Luffy always wins with his captain. They fought back before skypiea. Now Nami may trick him, but is his decision.
4. i was fine with Sanji's comment since his dream was all blue (a fishing spot) and before time skip he was trying to get food recipes to make better food, thus a comment about keeping them full versus a combat comment is more fitting. A combat comment would feel out of place, like "huh is he no longer chef"

pretty sure that was not Luffy's hands around her at all, it was his NECK.

I thought so too, I thought it was a joke regarding that long neck Japanese demons
-
This was a very good departing chapter, especially the humor. It was hilarious how Luffy wrapped his neck around Nami's body, which was a first. The part that I thought was the best, though, was Shirahoshi asking Luffy to stay on the island for one more day. No, one more week. No, one more year! I'm sure that she'll keep the promise to stop being a crybaby and will be stronger and more independent next time we see her (like Coby, as others already said).
Let's see where the super-floaty wood will take them in the following week(s). With any luck, it'll be close to Vice-Admiral Smoke and Captain Tashigi…

she didn't freak with his hands all wraped around her.
I dn't understand what are you saying?that she likes it lolll? It's his neck btw.
And crew members are always suprised/freaking out whenever Luffy wraps his arms around them to set off, like Nami is in the first panel.
@ ponx: Really? nice to know. Loool at all their faces especially Luffy's in the second panel. Can't wait for Luffy's reaction when midway through their catch up conversation drunken Shanks blurts he has a kid:ninja:
Funny how he does not have the slightest little thought of meeting Dragon in the new world. And has no clue Sabo's out there what a scene that will be.
I'm quite excited this second and final part has officially been reached :3 They have no idea what's ahead. But well they are prepared. For the most part but look at the image of a map behind the minister, at one point before Raftel, it narows and there is only two islands to choose from.
Read your post too fast yes the island at the end is raftel. There is only one island before raftel that they will inevitably go through but before that one it's still the batch of three islands isn't it? The map the minister shows is the same as Crocus' in chapter 105 which is more clear.
By the way might be just me but dsn't the New World seem to have less islands than the first half in that map?Could this mean the strawhats will spend much more time on the islands they end up on than in Paradise?(or will plot increasingly take place on the seas?)I remember a member theorising about the formula Oda has used so far changing in the New World.
-
Why the hell didn't Neptune tell them about the bomb? I mean, he's a fricking king and he won't evne take responsibility for that!? God that's so lame.
