@Monkey:
Ran came out in 85 and was very polished looking, that looks like something from the 70's.
Those were just the first two Japanese films that came to mind that seemed remotely possible. I've only ever seen the 7 Samurai. Yes I saw ALL of Seven Samurai when I was 13 or 14 in my hunger to see as many great movies as possible at that time. But I know who the great non-American directors are such as Kurosawa, Ozu, Fellini, Bergman etc. Thank you Roger Ebert.
I'd say one of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, though I'm really not sure, I've never seen them.

I agree. I thought it would be recognized right away.
Shame on Zephos or anyone (that ain't you or me) who read Lone Wolf and Cub.
If I had listened to James Cameron and killed myself already, I would have to be sitting here reading these silly posts

I didn't know there were Lone Wolf and Cub movies and I imagine most people here didn't so I wouldn't blame them.
Then again it's not hard to imagine in hind sight given LWaC is (to a very small extent) attached to the name of Frank Miller, a man who's been able to get his other works (not that Cub will ever truly be his work) turned into movies. Although according to the critics 300 was typical Hollywood schlock. Sin City was actually pretty damn good though according to reviewers. If I ever saw both movies, then based on my tastes I'd probably go for the latter as well.

Is the Avatar thread becoming the new Naruto thread ?
God bless James Cameron. He's an inspiration to us all.
Cameronism. It Is The TRUE WAY.
On-topic: I haven't watched Avatar or any of the Transformers movies and probably won't.
That is my insightful and extremely contributing comment.
that's not on topic at all imo
I intend to turn all threads into Naruto Threads by 2013.
@Kareem:
You've got a point there, I should develop my own opinions. I'm hoping I can see both Transformers 3 and the Green Lantern movie and criticize them fairly and not try to hate them (I wanted Green Lantern to be good.) The fact that both were panned by critics is definitely a bad sign though. It's still nice to hear what other people whose opinions you respect have to say on the issue though. While I'm at it I'm hoping to see Super 8 because most people said it was pretty good. Personally I like being critical it gives you a better appreciation for the good things. Sorry if I've been random in this thread, it happens sometimes.
Nothing to apologize for. It's an Avatar thread.
But yeah. Only watch the movie if you really want to give it a fair review. Otherwise, avoid it like a plague. I couldn't follow a thing that was going on in the first movie(it was like watching an avalanche of towed cars and then given a test to count all of them), and I know for a fact that the rest is the same shit.

But Roland Emmerich said that the world would end by 2012.
He was so sure he even made a movie about it!
First Transformers was robots, explosions, and masturbation jokes.

Brad Bird is directing a Mission Impossible movie.
I'm actually going to see a Mission Impossible movie. In the theater.
Interesting how that director has my guaranteed patronage, even for a franchise I don't like… while I don't think anything of Cameron anymore.
@Monkey:
No, Willard and boring are nothing alike. They aren't written alike. They aren't perceived of alike. They aren't whatsoever the same. And boring isn't even unlikable for being a bad person. He's just vaguely frat boyish and vapid.
Oi, thanks for popping my chewed out by JERK cherry! It's been real.
EDIT: also, who where would still be interested in James Cameron's Battle Angel Alita that he has been talking about forever?

But can even Brad Bird make up for Tom Cruise.
Paul Thomas Anderson handled Tom Cruise like a boss.
Ain't nothing wrong with Tom Cruise.
He's a scientologist, and I have a bit of a boycott against movies with scientology actors. Doesn't matter how good of actors they are.
Also, I don't understand why people think Megan Fox is attractive. She used to be, but her face is more silicon than carbon nowadays if you know what I mean.
I doubt it's her face.
Ain't nothing wrong with Tom Cruise.
He is like Nick Cage. He needs to be passionate, have the proper people around him and be working with the right material for him to pull off an impressive performance. Both are very capable, but audiences have seen them phone it in so many times that they forgot either can be good.
His real life aside, Tom Cruise is a good actor. I just saw him in Rain Man a few days ago. Fantastic performance.
Tom Cruise is gonna be in that Rock Of Ages movie with Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand.
EDIT: Megan Fox is a stupid bitch. All she did was complain about her job, and compared Bay to Hitler. So Spielburg, being Jewish, didn't take to kindly to that and sacked her worthless ass.
I hate how in the U.S. we compare everything to fucking Hitler. It's ridiculous, insensitive, and was frankly embarrassing when I lived in Austria and some other Americans did it. I wanted to hide my head in the sand.

It makes sense that Americans treat Hitler like we do. Ease the hell off. As long as we don't talk about positively in any sense what's even to complain about.
That Gene Wilder film and even the 2005 Matthew Broderick one is brilliant.
Because if a country knows how to deal with the Nazi past it's definitely Austria.
@Thousand:

He was good, but it was Dustin Hoffman who made that film I'd have to say. And yes I have seen Rain Man a while back and I liked it a lot. Whenever people list great modern American actors Hoffman isn't listed nearly as often as De Niro or Pacino or Nicholson or Hanks (all great actors as well) and I feel he should be. That's just me.
Dustin Hoffman is the man. (then again I've liked him in the movies I've seen him in: The Graduate, Little Big Man, Tootsie and Rain Man)
Now where were we…oh yeah: humans suck compared to primitive cat people with USB wires in their hair.
@Monkey:

Yeah cause what the government does perfectly reflects how people think all the time.
I never knew there was so much hatred for the show untill I read this thread. Wow. I thought the movie was an incredible action packed sci fi adventure with awsome special effects. It was fun and certainly entertaining.
However my one complaint is a large one and that is the Humans had NOTHING the Navi wanted. There was nothing to compromise with so the ultimate message was, Humans Bad.
Ultimatly this will make the humans the bad guy in any sequel. All this talk about how the plot is similar to other movies that came before it is understandable but then all plots are similar to something in the past. It's how well the story is told that matters to me. And Avatar told a good story and told it well. I just wish it hadn't limited such and incredible sci fi world with the Humans Bad marker.

Without describing their appearance or jobs, tell me about the three main characters.

Oh Avatar had a good story alright.
I just liked it better when it was called Ferngully, Pocahontas, or The Last Samurai.
@RobbyBevard:

That's a trick question Robby.
! There were no characters. :ninja:
I don't even remember the names. Lets see…
Guy in wheelchair: Seeks meaning in his life. Wishes for mobility. ummm ummmm Stoic?
Girl Navi: Stubborn, I was going to mention she's blue but that would be a description.
Ripley: Firey pissed off at the system ummmmmmmm I give this is funny by the way, I get it.
"Guy in wheelchair" "girl Navi" and "Ripley."
Yeah, you can tell the story and characters left a huge impression.
@RobbyBevard:

The characters did not leave much of an impact but the story at least was engaging enough to make my Girlfriend cry when they chopped down a tree. Contrast that with the same story told in Last Samurai, Pocahontus, Ferngully that ultimatly was boring.
I'm not defending Avatar but I am defending the point that just because a show has the same story doesn't mean it's baseless. The same story told by different people in different ways can either be awsome or crappy.
And the story of invaders for another world was more engaging in Avatar than it was in Ferngully or Pocahontus.
And the story of invaders for another world was more engaging in Avatar than it was in Ferngully or Pocahontus.
Why is that, then?
Hoffman gets plenty of credit. Its Gary Oldman who is horrendously underappreciated.
Gary Oldman played a midget though, so that might've hurt him.
@Sniper:
Why is that, then?
Explosions! No other reason. Just lots and lots of Explosions.
Someone just showed how their opinion is wrong.
@Tokoro:
Dustin Hoffman is the man. (then again I've liked him in the movies I've seen him in: The Graduate, Little Big Man, Tootsie and Rain Man)
Don't forget Midnight Cowboy. He is really an amazing actor, he deserves all the praise he gets.
