Most Disappointing Thing in One Piece

and the problem with this is. . .?
Haki has been hinted at starting from the very first chapter and we have seen it quite a few times after that. Luffy has gotten to a point that he will meet guys so strong that they can indeed not be defeated by normal means and that makes it even more interesting because if Luffy can defeat these guys he'll belong to the top.
If you mean to say that Oda had to introduce Haki because along the line he realized that some abilities are undefeatable than I think you are wrong because Haki is not a means to an end and has been introduced immediately, be it unnamed, if you don't mean this than: never mind. All I meant is that Oda had Haki planned so we know why people like Shanks, Mihawk, etc. are at the top. Didn't say when but I meant early on not later as he made more and more powerful characters. Confused where you saw I had a problem when I'm arguing against people thinking Haki is worse than convoluted weaknesses.
Early in the series theories were that they used seastone weapons or were just Mcguyvers during battle evading till they exploited a weakness and got the upper hand and simply perfected this to an art form.
Haki is far less stupid than those two theories or Kizaru being weak to reflective items.

may be wrong but I think they thought that you meant Haki was only invented halfway through the series because Oda 'suddenly realised' Logia's were too powerful so used it as like a way to nerf them
Possible that i'm completely wrong, in which case. Ignore.
-
Haki is more then any of this.
It's a thematic element. Ambition and strong will are the central tenant of the series and all Oda has done is make it into a Force like power.
After reading through some of this thread I realized One Piece isn't that great of a series. In fact it seems kinda mediocre. Incredibly formulaic, gets more uncreative, a lot of the fights are won with asspulls, there are long instances spent away from the plot, not all characters get enough spotlight, some of the flashbacks are weak, pacing can be pretty terrible. I don't know. Maybe it's because I've expanded my anime and manga horizons lately or I'm a little too negative right now because I just finished watching Evangelion.
Or you were always watching One Piece completely fucking wrong for the wrong reasons and never actually appreciated it for what it is?
Oh there's always that!listens to Ramones for symphonic elements
THIS IS AMAZING
hears his first music that is at all more complex
OH FUCK, THE RAMONES KIND OF SUCKSI hate to use this overused lame meme.
But YER DOING IT WRONG.

After reading through some of this thread I realized One Piece isn't that great of a series. […] because I just finished watching Evangelion.
Young padawan needs to learn the difference between brainfucking anime and shounen manga.
-
I know it's a shounen series and thus shouldn't be too bad with it or expecting too much out of it, I just feel it's overrated a little sometimes.
That's it. Sorry for saying it a little harshly before. -
One piece is like good vine…it only gets better....

No you're on point. Didn't mean haki was realized half-way.

Also Evangelion sucks.
-
The worst One Piece moment is easily the chapter when Ace is killed by Akainu.
Spoiler:
The whole build up was stupid up until the final punch.
Akainu: Whitebeard is a loser!
Ace: Herpa derpa. "Even though I couldn't beat Blackbeard, I for some retarded reason believe I can beat an Admiral. Who cares if my friends have risked and gave their lives for me?!"
Ace got BURNED when in FIRE FORM.
"Magma burns hotter than Fire! SO I can Burn You!"
Fire apparently burns….
Ace instead of pushing Luffy out of the way, jumps in front.
Ace's stomach muscles... are strong enough to stop lava. Despite the fact that it pierced through him like butter.
That really shouldn't have stopped Akainu's fist in the slightest.
said it in the nominations thread, and I'll say it again.

@JERK:

How? I do realize I shouldn't expect One Piece to be some complex story, it's meant to be a lighthearted, simple adventure story that everybody can enjoy. Of course a series this long will have some weaker moments here and there. It was one of the first anime series I watched and I still enjoy it for what it's meant to be. A simple story isn't necessarily a bad one. As I said I expressed myself a little badly there. Sorry. If I'm still being stupid please elaborate on what you meant.
Yeah, found NGE okay overall, though pretty depressing.

crosses arms contentlyIt seems like magma smothers fire… So it's not surprising at all.
And Ace trying to attack Akainu just shows how much some can be stupid when you attack the people they love. But look, Ace didn't take that much risks, he didn't die from fighting Akainu. I think someone could have easily stopped him from fighting Akainu. Whitebeard, for instance. I'm sure he wouldn't have let Ace fight him.
The problem was Luffy... He was such an easy target... -
Ace instead of pushing Luffy out of the way, jumps in front.
Well if he pushed Luffy he still would have gotten hit. I think blocking it was just a way to make the picture look better. After all, simply pushing Luffy would be considerably lamer then blocking the punch.
Who agrees?

Emporio Ivankov's gender changing ability. Seriously, it creeps me out.

for me it is funny ,on top of it he is an okama himself

That was shown in a flashback after that moment.
And it doesn't make him any less retarded.
And You didn't even say why it's stupid for him to think he can beat an admiral when he can't beat blackbeard.
@Castelmore As for magma smothering fire… sure, I'll give you that.
@Sabo No, no... the derp moment is he tried to block Lava.
It's like jumping in FRONT of someone to save them from a train, or a Car.
The train isn't (well shouldn't) stop, if it can go through the object in front.
Magma melts through flesh with ease. Ace BLOCKED it to protect luffy.
The fist should have melted them both.He should of pushed Luffy out of the way. Period.
Also, blocking ensures a fatal wound, pushing Luffy (As strong as One Piece people are) wouldn't have.
-
I agree with you pyro, how Ace died is the most disappointing things I've seen in One Piece. I would be okay if he went supernova on their ass and destroyed damn near everyone on the island… instead of being fisted in front of luffy.
Yeah it made for a great tear jerking scene with luffy, but come on son...
Oh, that and not finding out what Lola saw as the SH crew left Thriller Bark. I sure hope we get to see that. -
That was shown in a flashback after that moment.

it doesn't make him retarded. He just doesn't fear anyone or do u expect him crawl away like a baby from the arrogant bastard who mocks a person so admirable to him and tries to kill another dear one.
If you still think he is retarded then luffy should be the most retarded one to come to save ace's ass right after he along with his crew was blown away by a schichibukai.
That makes half of one piece characters who strive to fight regardless of their strengths retardedace stopping akainu's punch is ridiculous but i personally think moments like that intensifies the plot

I agree with OP. D. fan. Your telling me that if you saw a friend or family member in a similar situation, that you would stop and think about how to save them? And besides, Ace's death was an important part of the storyline in terms of making Luffy stronger, so the scene needed to be dramatic.
-
I hate it too when a character has his own unique flaws, pyromonkey.
So annoying and retarded.
-
Op.D.fan I second that. Plus Sakazuki didnt give him a split second to think things through.Instinctively did what he had to do protect. I find the way Ace jumped very honorable plus that panel is siiiiiick its been on on my desktop forever
-
When the hell did Ace ever think he could beat Akainu anyway.
He was enraged, he's not gonna rationalize his decisions and have a powerlevel debate with himself.
-

Luffy is retarded but what Ace did was the Stupidest thing you can do, When the goal is to Save you and you go out to kill yourself is Beyond Retarded.
Take Luffy Vs. Aoi kiji the First time, Luffy tried to sacrifice himself just like Whitebeard is.
Zoro who Doesn't Back down from a fight, (takes Kuma on for example at TB, and Sacrifices himself for the crew),
Obeys his captains order no matter what, or at Mock town Against Bellemy.Or at Sabondy Arc. when the crew is being defeated 1 by one, everyone is trying to escape. they had no intention to fight strong guys.
Marco and Vista were just as hurt and worried but they obeyed their captain.
Sometimes you just gotta run.
Many things around Ace could have been handled better in my opinion.
Very much disappointed with some Ace related issue's.
-

Um…what?
It's not like Ace decided "thanks for freeing me, but I deserve to die". He got enraged when Akainu insulted WB, Ace's captain and father figure.
Ace's anger was clouding his judgement; it obviously wasn't a good idea to just attack an admiral (especially the fact that Ace is far from admiral strength).
-
Hey, remember when Luffy punched a Celestial Dragon?
Most retarded thing ever. Ugh, doesn't he know there would be admirals coming???

He knew the whole war happened because of him, when he was freed he should have Listened To his captain and ran like everyone else.
he wasn't the only one who was hurt because of akainu's insults towards whitebeard.
Marco, Vista and Other Division captains were just as much hurt if not more.
he made the stupidest move trying to take on an admiral while going against his captains orders to run and having being freed with so much lives and injuries of your companions and than going out their to repay their efforts to get owned.
He should have read the Situation.
and Yes Luffy is retarded, i didn't say he wasn't, but he knows when to run.
Or Sacrifice himself for His crew Survival. -

That is just the way Ace is. He is hot headed, and never backs down. He got caught up in the insults that were aimed at his 'father'. In the heat of the moment when a person is totally pissed they won't weigh the factors in whether they would be able to defeat whoever was aggravating them.
-

He took Akainu's verbal bait, I suppose.
he wasn't the only one who was hurt because of akainu's insults towards whitebeard.

No denying that.

It was all because of his anger. I know the situation was dire and certainly not calling for anyone to attack an admiral when escape was the first priority, but understand the perspective.
If someone insulted your family, for example, wouldn't you be angry? Granted, you may or may not want to go outright and physicially attack the person, but with Ace, he was just that hot-tempered to do so.
-
And let's please recall that Ace had just spent how much time in prison. Not really the best place for maintaining ideal physical and mental strength, and I know for sure when I feel crappy physically it's much easier for me to get mad and/or be all emotional/tearful about stuff–he'd shown us in spades that he was definately going through all of that. He had also just been through some overwhelming emotional "I'm gonna die" realizations that threw his whole world into a tizzy--(those don't always have to be negative realizations to have a huge emotional impact). All of that, especially when most of it was about Whitebeard and Luffy--would certainly make Ace's ability to think clearly and rationally under those circumstances, weak at best, and non-existant in all probability, at least IMHO anyway
-
just to add to this ace debate Ace has ALWAYS been a hot head pun intended :) ive always thought oda gave him the fruit because of his temper. during all the flash backs we see him attacking people for just insulting roger the most infamous pirate in the world. it didnt surprise me at all that he was able to be baited into the fight with akinu. in fact it makes you wonder if some personalitys were based on DF or visa versa ex. akoji's cool persona, BB well… darkness, luffys durablilty and ability to bounce back... i could go on
-
I think the most disappointing thing about the manga thus far has been the inexplicable power ranges at various levels:
-no F'ing way Moria should have once been Yonkou-class, but now (without zombies) weaker than the pre-skip SH crew. Zoro says it's a matter of time rather than power for them to kick his ass and I believe him; did his 'even fight' with Kaidou leave him crippled or something? He already had neck stitches before that fight.
-no way, no offense to Crocodile, does he even vaguely match up to Boa, Doflamingo or Kuma…or assumably Mihawk (who keeps standing up to heavyweights without really using any special techniques but is frustratingly difficult for the scouter to fully analyze); 70 mill bounties in with 320 mill bounties? It seems like everybody who gets to Shabondy ends up stronger/more notorious...none feel like a sweet letter of marque from the WG?etc. - maybe it's just since a) not much power-level-numbering (thank god Douriki didn't stick around) is a good thing but tends to vagueness and b) a lot of new super-elites all got intro'ed at once and no-one's really made a big chart of who ranks where (what is a Floor Six Impel Down prisoner relative to a Vice-Admiral, etc.).
I assume it'll sort out in time - but sometimes it seems like every group has a token weakling to get the SH's through their teething stage at higher tiers - admittedly shounen bread'n'butter but at times illogically done. Weaker CP9s with 3 supermen made sense (800 douriki = 80 armed soldiers, how strong do most missions need you to be?) but if the Shichibukai are meant to counterbalance the Navy and Yonkou, they should all at least be on the same planet as the admirals and Shanks/WB types.
-
@I:

I don't even think you need to go this deep.
It was a split-second decision, a mistake he may have made even during the best of health. -

With Moriah, it's pretty well implied that the fight Kaido broke his will, and 10 years of lying on his ass doing pretty nothing caused a massive drop in strength.
Crocodile, though, is adimttedly not as physically powerful at others, but he is a master of his powers and quite shrewd.
-
@HolyGamer99
No he was making fun of someone who said that Ace was retarded for not carefully considering the consequences of battling Akainu. -
emm, all this discussion make me think that if Ace just running away like he have to, will he survive? all his allied also busy running away, Akainu on his tail, and luffy collapsed due to all the damage his taken before and during the war.. and from what i read, Ace died not because he got angry with Akainu and lost the fight but actually because he block Akainu's punch to save critical wounded luffy.. i failed to see how is that is an stupid act. what can he do in that nick of time against an enemy stronger than him? summon manda, hypnotize it and blocking Akainu punch?
-

ace stopping akainu's punch is ridiculous but i personally think moments like that intensifies the plot
This makes literally no sense. How does that intensify the plot? How would him pushing Luffy out of the way make it any less traumatic?
It would still be in front of Luffy and just as traumatizing if he pushed him out of the way.
Also, Ace was JUST FIGHTING Akainu, he knows Akainu uses Lava.
Would you jump in FRONT of your significant other to stop a train? No… Of course you wouldn't. You would push them out of the way I would hope. :getlost:
You guys are reading what I type, but are completely missing the point.
And the difference between Luffy and Ace is.... Luffy runs when faced with a tougher opponent. He's done this a couple of times. (Smoker, Ao Kiji, SA)
When Luffy punched the Tenryburrito, he tried to kill Hachi. Understandable.
Akainu: "Whitebeard sucks." ...okay? It's not badass or cool to die just because you're a hot head. It's foolish.
But I get it. That's "how he is". I mean... it's completely illogical for someone to make a mature decision (Something EVEN LUFFY, the same guy who charges when in anger, is capable of).
That's impossible. Character development never happens.
Just because he normally "never backs down" doesn't make his death any less retarded.
It makes sense story wise, but it's retarded. His actions were retarded. Jumping in front of a train to save your brother.... is retarded. I was highly disappointed by the said acts of herping and derping.
Thanks. Good night.

The thing about One piece power Scales is that its more like Rock paper Scissors.
For Example…. Lets say Between Mihawk, Shanks, and Akainu.
Its only an example don't take it seriously.
Mihawk Beats Shanks
Shanks Beats Akainu
Akainu Beats Mihawk. So Who's the most Powerful Single Fighter among them.... All of them.
They all of their weakness and Strength.
We have to look at each individuals Status, power, Rank, Technique, Threat.
Bounties is a whole another Topic if we are talking about Strength, power,(fighting 1 on 1)
Bounties is a overall threat to the marines of the persons knowledge strength and Allies and whatever That person has in his power.
For example Robin has a higher bounty than Sanji but she can't Beat him.
its her Knowledge which is a big Threat to the Government.
You can View The power Ranking Through the world government point of view or Pirate/Revolutionary View and you will get different Results in who is a big threat towards one another.
Shanks
Kaidou
Big MomBoa Hancock
Jimbei
Mihawk
Doflamingo
Moria
Kuma
Crocodile
BlackbeardSengoku
Kizaru
Aokiji
Akainu
Garp
Maggellan
SmokerEnel
Marco
Ace
Jozu
Vista
Ivankov
Dragon
Rayleighand some others that i may have forgotten.
Their all strong.
people try to put them in power rankings which is dumb all of them have their Strength and weakness.
i don't agree with peoples Top, mid, low tier ranking either.
one piece world is a lot about Crew and team work too which makes the yonkou what they are.
It will always be like this and i think its for the better in my opinion.
-
This makes literally no sense. How does that intensify the plot? How would him pushing Luffy out of the way make it any less traumatic?
Humans behave irrational most of the time. And you're right: Pushing Luffy aside while getting hit isn't that much of a difference from jumping into the punch and shield the one you want to protect by taking the blow. But Oda decided to make Ace take the blow - you're not the author so you lose. Period.
-

It was pretty obvious that oda wanted it to be traumatic for luffy.
you accept that it makes sense story wise but it is retarded then there are hell lot of situations where people acted retarded throughout the series ,don't you think?
These retarded stupid dumb actions do have an impact on the readers -
I know noone will listen to me, and I apologize for wasting bandwidth asking, but if I don't even try that seems worse, so–-Please stop using the word retarded as if it is a legitimate substitute for other, more appropriate words. You all are a bunch of intelligent, insightful people, and I promise the English language is a rich and varied one--there are so many words to use that are better (sigh) Alright. I'm done
That said, people act in irrational and, in retrospect, stupid or thoughtless ways all the time IRL too. The time for Ace to make a choice in that situation was a split second. He thought to block the blow--nothing beyond that, apparently--so he didn't push Luffy out of the way. Yep, it may be true that they are damned lucky the punch stopped where it did, since clearly Akainu could have continued on through and skewered both of them at once if his arms were long enough and he were able to see what he was doing through Ace and he were inhuman enough not to be even the least bit grossed out by what he'd just done to Ace… But geeze, seems to me even a guy like Akainu would stop once he'd stuck his arm straight through another human being, rather than pushing him up to his shoulder in order to enable him to reach the next guy in line. Maybe that's just me though. (Ewww)
But back to Ace--Oda wrote a scene where an inherently flawed character acted within the boundaries of his flaw. Oh the horror--Ace acted like himself! Dear God, what was Oda thinking?!?
Someone told me yesterday we didn't need to go so deeply into Ace's psyche to figure this out, but apparently we do.
Yes, character development happens. Yes, Ace had had a series of important realizations and growth experiences just prior to this scene up on that platform–but --Ace was deeply touched by his love for WB throughout the war, and was faced with the reality that WB would be dieing as a result of the actions he took to save Ace himself--how is that gonna make Ace's feelings the same as the other commanders? He could look at the entire war and see a direct correlation to himself--Ace felt responsible for WB's death--under those circumstances, especially given his personality as written, he wasn't going to be able to stand by and let insults to WB go unanswered. He physically couldn't do it--the realizations and character growth on the platform would make it even harder--not less so.
As for what he did for Luffy? IRL, and perhaps as Oda wrote this character--time is necessary for those realizations to make real and lasting changes in the way a person reacts under pressure. He reacted to save Luffy by making himself the shield--that is all. He didn't think beyond that. IMHO, the result to himself would have been the same whether he pushed Luffy out of the way or not. The fact is, Akainu is not a freight train–just an incredibly strong and powerful human being--but a human being who is able to stop where he had more or less decided to stop when he first started the move--after skewering one body, unlike a train, which cannot decide to stop quickly, once it reaches certain speeds, no matter how hard we may wish it to.

Ace was hot headed, got angry quite a bit, and had unyielding respect and loyalty toward Whitebeard.
He would've rounded on whoever insinuated that Whitebeard was a loser regardless of the situation.

I would suggest that we use dingus instead of retard.
Also don't use the word dumbo because I got banned for it. But use the word dumbo instead because it's a cool word.
We can be a little nicer and ask "Are you suffering from brain turmoil?"
Be creative in insulting others, you feeble-minded youths.
On-topic: I don't like that Ace died before kicking some asses but the way he died made sense and this character trait was built up before. -
The only thing that really disappointed me in One Piece so far is when Luffy caught up to Lucci he didn't punch the piegion first, that would have been super.

@I:
I'm done
It baffles me why people feel the need to write swear words - it makes little sense and detracts from their argument. When you are in a heated argument you use the words you need to ephasise your position.
On a forum where you can be calm and collect your thoughts before you post writing the word to me is a waste of time.As much as I am against insulting a person - I agree with Sea if you feel the need to insult someone put some effort into it and not just spew out common phrases like a pre-teen who thinks their all grown up.
With more thought on the matter unless Ace was denying his base Logia state of being intagible then yeah Akainu should have passed straight through him - I guess it was for the imagery factor or maybe to represent Akainu wanting Luffy's last image to be his brothers death.
I haven't had a problem with it so I can't emphasise with how they feel.

Toei animation….that is all.

What did Toei do? Do you mean 4Kids, cause that would make total sense.
