i used to do karate , but i quitted . i do know some people who do karate or boxing
-
I did Taekwondo for half a year but it conflicted with my college schedule so I had to quit.
-
Used to do Karate for a short period, but I quit. It still interests me though.
-
I train in wushu. I don't fight for sport because I can't afford to get messed up like that.

Boxingkendojudoaikido in summary
Boxing for the longest time was my physical activity/sport of choice, kendo and judo came sometime roughly four, or five years years ago; I studied both simultaneously (it was like a six hour day) and I worked with Aikido for like two years. These were all the major simulated combative art of noogies I did before I became who I am now.
A person who does not leave the house. I am still physically fit and flexible, at least.
P.S. western fencing was here, kendo is a loser
P.S.S. kendo was here suck my balls you are a lame-o too i am so mad right now fuck

Sheeesh can't you use the search option. Sigh Can someone call a mod to close this!OK joking aside; I used to fight alot as a boy, because I always enjoyed verbally attacking bullies and older guys. Made them look like fools and when they couldn't answer anymore they beat me up. Gradually I became stronger so I fought back. Hehehe now that I think about it I was always being a smartass with teachers too, getting punishments and so.
I also studied tae kwon do and judo for a couple of years, but that was like a decade ago. I am thinking of restarting Tae kwon do, right now.

in this thread you can talk about bar brawls and that makes it different!!!! Plus I don't want to hear about movie fighting

I've taken Kajukenbo for years now. It's rough stuff, but the two fights I got in this year were over ridiculously quick thanks to it.
And because I am sure most of you have never heard of it, enjoy the wiki article. -
A few friends of mine (most notably my best friend) spar frequently for fun.
I've seen them brawl. It's downright beautiful how well they do it. My buddy and one of his friends can go for hours without them hitting eachother because of how well they can dodge their own attacks.
I've been told their sparring abilities come from multiple karate and boxing classes with their own spin on it.
Sadly I'm a pacifist and an absolute pussy so I don't physically partake in any of it.
-
Studied competitive Judo for a year (as prep for BJJ), but was really bad at it. I was told it wasn't because I lacked athleticism, I just had a very underdeveloped intuition for fighting. I think had I started martial arts when I was very young, it would have been a lot easier to adapt.
I've always wanted to box, but I'm terrified of getting brain/head injury. No matter how badly I want something, I'm not willing to participate if I'll risk damaging either my head or my hands.
-
I took Tae Kwon Do back when I was 10, and made it to a purple belt, I think. But, I couldn't continue since my dad thought it was too pricey.
-
I've briefly trained in Judo and Taekwondo.
In truth most of my fights comprise of me fighting at a party, pub, club or just obliterating the folks that have tried to mug me.
Either by skill or good luck I've never lost a fight, though I did get mobbed back when I was a teen twice, which involves you surrounded by tons of people getting punched in the face. I stood there and took it. I'd prefer to get beaten senseless and maintain my pride then run off screaming.
Plus where I'm from if you prove your metal in a situation like that you get respect, which in itself will save you more times then your ability to punch and take punches.
Saying that I've got loads of scars and trophies from stuff like that.
- was bottled twice
- stabbed in the chin
- hit with a skateboard
- hit with a taser
- shot with an air-pistol
- hit with a golf club
- And some other random objects.
I'd say my favourite weapon of choice is a telescopic batten. The only downside is the 5 years you get for possession.
-
I took Aikido for like two months. But I didn't have the gumption or the money to keep going. Mostly the money (IRL Gekko btw).
-
Talking about brawls, I witnessed some crazy shit, but the greatest brawl I got in personally was when we had this all out war in high school between moroccans and turks inside the school. It was crazy, the build up, the actual brawl and the aftermath. Miraculously no one got seriously injured.

I took a Karate class back when I was in elementary school, but never got a Black Belt. I stopped at a Blue Belt and ultimately quit the Karate class becuase (Keep in mind I was an elementary tyke back then) the times of the class was forcing me to miss my Saturday Morning Cartoons (there was no Tivo back then and heaven forbid I miss my Yu-Gi-Oh). I still regret that choice to this day, which is why I've joined the Kendo club at my College recently. I'm also planning to join the Akido club next semester in addition to the Kendo Club. Gotta get physical now.

Never really studied any martial arts or anything, though I've said I would for the longest time. Judo, Boxing, Kick-boxing, Kenpo Karate, BJJ, Aikido, Kendo, Muay Thai (my cousin is apparently an instructor), Irish Stick Fighting (Legitimately passed down from family member to family member, the instructor decided to teach others) etc. are all basically available where I live / used to be available, and I am interested in learning them, but I just procrastinate and end up not actually going to do them. Boxing is the main thing, though Judo and Kick-Boxing are also two of the ones I've really wanted to try but just never get around to.
I’d like to try them competitively if I get around to actually practicing, but I just never actually go out and start when I plan to and then I end up procrastinating until I forget about it. Was also going to go volunteer in China, where we’d be visiting a Shaolin temple and be able to learn a bit while we’re there, but the trip costs more than I’m really willing to pay since it’s only a short trip(still looking for some volunteer work over there, just having trouble finding stuff). Got in some fights and I’ll probably get in some more, but nothing really worth mentioning when compared to getting mobbed and whatnot.

I was almost a real street fighter when I was a kid. My life was about staying high in the hierarchy and what could've been better than having "organized" fights with other kids behind the school or so?
Must say that I was a pretty good street-fighter back then XD Tying boys to a flagpole with hopping rope was fun.Missing all that respect that the other kids had for me.
I also tried taekwondo for a small while. Didn't hit me. I'm all about just beating the other up and winning.
-
The most fighting I did was giving my sister two black eyes, and even then I used weaponry.
Plastic weaponry.
Good times…
-
Well I fought my sister too. And my other sister. I remained as winner.
We used to have ninja fights on trampoline. Until I fell down and almost broke myself.
-
Wait until Vivi hears about this thread…
-
I'll fight her and win.
-
I once started a brawl in my elementary school lunchroom.
I took out like three kids before some punkass sixth grader got behind me with a lunch tray.
-
Cyan I can relate with you. Fighting is fun as long as you are beating up people your size or a bit smaller.
When you fight people a lot smaller than you, it becomes pathetic.
-

Even if it's a midget with a black belt?
-
No, that is an exception. And you know that you shouldn't be messing with that one. Everyone knows that midgets are dangerous.
-
I have so many scars and received tons of bruises.
From house party fights, moshing gone bad, family fist fights over video gaming and betting, fights over my racism, to drunk katana fighting.
Fighting is good and feeling the pain is pure awesomeness.
-

Why does this seem like a progression of events that occurred over the same night.

Me and my friends used to reenact the lightsaber battles from Star Wars with painted broomsticks. We actually got pretty good and I'm still able to perform decent choreographies in all variations (bamboo sticks, broomsticks, metal poles, heavy sticks, light sticks, two sticks, one stick, long sticks, short sticks, magic stick etc.).
Sometimes it got a little out of hand though: One of my friends got hit with a metal pole right above the eye and bled really badly. His brother has three scars on his head from similar incidents. I'm the only one who was always lucky and just got a few scratches and occasionally a bleeding nose.
When we almost got bored of Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings movies came…
-
Aw man, that reminds me of when I and my sister fought with crocket clubs and I threw it under her eye. We got into hospital and erm. She has a nice scar reminding her of it.
I got a bit more calm after that and left fighting with weaponry.
-
i studied karate for a while as a kid.
-
Everyone and their brother did karate. Hell, even my sister did and I still beat her. Nothing special in that.
-
I was going to get into Taekwondo when I was younger, but for some reason or another that just never happened. I wish I had been put in it when I was younger, if only to introduce me to stuff earlier and give me that much needed push to actually go out and try these things when I first think about them.
I'm interested in people who've practiced anything competitively, if anyone here has anything to say on that. Judo and Boxing are probably the two I'm the most interested in personally, but I'd love to hear more on anything people have done competitively and their experiences with it.
-
I use to study kickboxing for a couple of years but had to stop when I lost my job, thus losing the only way I had to pay for classes. Got my ass kicked a bunch of times but always got back up, especially since i always wanted to fight competitively, but never had the chance . I still keep up with it due to having a boxing bag hanging in my garage, but that's it.
-
I wonder how long it'll be till the war of 'which martial art is the greatest' begins?
-
Would like to take up boxing recreationaly when i get into a little better shape.
Unless you're too old for that at 22. If so then i'll just keep swimmin.
-
I've been doing Savate since I was 13.
It's from France and mainly a kick-based style along with open-handed strikes. Its main focus is on balance and flexibility rather than pure strength, which is good since gaining too much muscle isn't very helpful. Plus when doing throws and holds derived from Savate not as much energy is used, makes for an easier time with bigger people.
As for rank, I'm a silver glove 3 which is equivalent to around a 3rd degree black belt for other martial arts. Used to do actual matches till I graduated high school, but now I mainly just do spars against my brothers and certain friends when given the chance.

Not really, especially since you swim and that's pretty much the best form of exercise. Should be able to jump in relatively easily once you decide to start.
Just don't overdo it at the beginning or you'll end up tearing a muscle in the middle of drills.
-
I studied Vovinam (Việt Võ Đạo, 越武道, Martial Arts of Vietnam) for more than 2 years. Along with my brother.
-

Been there, done that. Back when i started swimming i (rather stupidly) went from no exercise at all to 7 days a week til a muscle in my shoulder snapped.
Never was any good at that moderation jazz.
-
Did Kung Fu for 6 years because I started at 6 and didn't know any better and then Judo for 2 years to stay in shape. Kung Fu's far more practically useful than Judo but Judo's much more fun to do.
-
I did kickboxing for 6 months but stopped because i didn't like it. I switched to capoeira and i'm sticking with it. I've been training it for 3 years now and it doesn't stop to amaze me. But why the question?
-
But why the question?
are you asking me this?
My parents recently suggested I take up karate to help lose weight and I'm doing a little bit of reasearchy on the subject before I commit to anything
Plus I like to hear about peoples fights
-
I'm a little surprised to see Tae kwon do being so popular. I can only say that when I practiced it, my feet were damn quick, and light. It's something I'm aware of now, not then.
I also heard very good things about Jiu Jutsu. Isn't Jiu Jutsu the most complete martial art there is?
-
Doing Karate for 11 years… Gonna go on the black belt exam this summer.
As for the most complete martial art I would pick Karate or Kung Fu. All the other martial arts lack things.

You sure? Do they learn you how to throw, joint locks, etc.. in karate?
edit: wait, did you say black belt? Ow I shouldn't get in a fight with you.

There are many many styles of karate. I know some who focus on throws like in jiu jitsu. I am not quite sure about joint locks but they prolly learn that too in some style. The style I do is just the casual sport type. I can kick with legs, fists, i can throw, i can do some joint locks (learned them myself). Ah and I did take some Capoiera (that brazilian stuff) class. Funny sport but not very usefull for fighting.
I would recommend Karate if u wanna loose weight and etc. When it comes down to fighting then it all depends on the fighter but with karate as a base you learn every other sport easily because in karate you train every part of your body, your learn to use ur fists and legs and you improve your movement coordination. I could now start doing jou jitsu and i would learn it epicly fast since im in good shape. All I need to learn is the rules and special attacks they have (and learning the attacks is pretty easy). On capoiera I was doing very good Compared to my mate who never did any kind of fighting sport. He couldnt lift his leg or smth, he had problems spinning and evading stuff.
I didn't get into a fight for a loooong time, nor I will I hope, but if I do I got some killer tricks up my sleeve that I picked up from other martial arts and adopted them to me.

but karate is a cool sport , to bad i only did it 2 years

@metteminne:

I did lol. Finished Tekken 3 with him xD. But nah really capoiera is 99% of the time useless. To do it properly you need to be light as a feather and you gotta bend like rubber. Maybe it's good weapon in hands of some master but capoiera as it is can't do much. But mixing capoiera moves with other sports is a pretty good combination.
-
well i dont see capoiera as a good or strong fighting sport , but it does train you body very well , but ocourse all fighting sports do that :/
