Allrighty:
Phantom of the Opera (2004)- Amazing music and amazing visuals. I know that many people hate this movie for not being true to the original. I've never read the original story so that doesn't bother me. For me, Gerard Butler is the Phantom. Past the Point of No Return will be one of my favorite songs forever.
Notre-Dame de Paris (1999 musical)
- It was released as a TV movie so it counts ;D This musical has everything musical should have, amazing voice talents, stupendous actors and amazing plot. Notre-Dame de Paris is one of my favorite books of all time so my affection for this is clear. There is no song more beautiful than "Belle" or "Dance mon Esmeralda"
The Bucket List (2007)
- I bought this movie when I saw it had Nicholson and Freeman in it. There's no way you can go wrong with those two and I was right. Story in my opinion is beautiful, acting is wonderful and just everything works. And since I'm a pussy so this movie always manages to ge me little teary eyed. Oh shut up!
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007)
- Movie that so many people seem to hate. I think it has wonderfull plot and Sandler, though hanging on the edge of unenjoyment here and there, brings something special into this role. Sandlers movies have always had amount of gay jokes so I'm sure no one was surprised when they made a whole movie about it. As an atheist I have no problem against gays and I think this movie, even though throwing in more gay jokes than a season in Family Guy, still ends up being really fair movie. Movie has really positive energy that I like.
Shawshank Redemption (1994)
- Since people like to hate movies that masses like, I'm sure many people hate this too. For me, it's the best prison movie ever made. Morgan Freeman of course is great as old mentor (I've seen him play that in some other movie too…!) and Tim Robbins who I've never seen outside of "cameo role" in other movies is absolutely stunning. IMDB ranks this as the best movie and even though I don't think it deserves the place, it's one of my favorite movies ever made.
The Hound of Baskervilles (2002)
- My favorite Holmes book and my favorite Holmes movie. This one got me interested in Sherlock Holmes and I ended up reading all of them, making them one of my favorite book series. Even though it has that BBC detective acting where everyone has to look as grumpy so that you don't know who the real criminal is. Ian Hart is the best Watson I've seen with Jude Law. I hate that so many people think watson as simple and chubby sidekick when he really is a brilliant man, only shadowed by Holmes' brilliance.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
I got this movie free when we bought a new washing machine so my expectations weren't high. First time I watched it I was stunned by the gore it had in because really, who could have expected that? After finishing it I thought it was mean spirited piece of movie that I would never watch again.
Like a true nerd, I did watch it again of course. On the second viewing I started to notice things I never did before and saw comedy through sudden gore scenes that felt like they weren't there the first time I saw it. Movie has more than strange plot and amazing visuals. I love the fasst phased editing.
Mean spirited? Maybe. Brilliant? Fuck yes.Avatar (2009)
- Guilty as charged. I really like Avatar. Many people say that when you look past pretty visuals there is nothing new to this movie. I never expected Avatar to bring us something plot-wise, for me it was making classic story (call it cliché if that pleases you) and making it better. I really like the enviroment of Pandora and the setting between humans and na'vi. And having Michelle Rodriguez, goddess of sexiness in it doesn't make it any worse either.
And of course, Cameron has to ruin everything by making a sequal…Titanic (1997)
- I remember parts of this movie when I had to watch it with my mom. Of course, my 7 year old self hated it. It was boring but it had nice effects.
It's funny how many people still see it like that.
These days I love this movie. I recently watched it with my girlfriend for the first time in years and it really hit me. DiCaprio is tremendous actor and not just a pretty face (which back then he had) and his romance with Kate Winsler is very good. Even though Billy Zane was a tad too obivious he still made a nice villain. Story maybe cliché and you know what's going to happen but again I don't like it for being amazing plot-ways. I'm not listing best movies ever made, I'm listing my favorite ones.
Most common critic I've heard is that it's not true to the real events. They ignore some parts and I really have to wonder why they see it so bad. It's a movie about love, not a documentary about Titanic.
Making long story short, I love it. I love the acting, story, sets, music, just everything.

Notre-dame de Paris sounds pretty cool too. Is it the same story that Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was based off of?
Oooh I didn't realize there was a Hound of the Baskervilles movie! Sounds like its pretty cool, I'll have to find that one. I wonder if its on netflix.
See, those are my thoughts exactly on Avatar. I'm glad there are other people that do not outright hate it. There are far worse movies out there, like "Dragonball" Evolution and The Last Airbender.
-
This isn't my all time favourite, nor is it so much a film, but Terry Pratchetts Hogfather deserves a mention.
Its been a while since we last had a such a lengthy and unusual release of this calibre.

I highly recommend Phantom of the Opera. Some people say it's bad because Andrew Lloyd Webber can't write anything original but I really see no problem. Then again, never seen anything else from him :D Atleast this musical rocks.
Another common critic is that Phantom is way too handsome and not as mis-shaped as he should be. That is true but I still enjoy it very much. And yes, it's the same but don't be surprised about the differences in story if you watch the musical :D Disney mixed everything up (in a good way I might add. It's one of my favorite Disney movies) because the real story would'nt have been really kid-friendly.

I ran into this movie since it has ran in finnish television tens of times for some reason :D Happened to find it by accident from the shop. I'm really not sure how popular it is widely :/ Hope you'll find it. :) The Hound freaked the hell out of me when I was a kid.
