I see Hancocks Fruit is the Love-Love fruit..Not bad,not sure if the translation fits.
"Mero Mero" basically means "Madly in love", so yeah, that's a perfectly acceptable translation of it.

Amazon.co.uk says my vol 23 is despatching soon!
Edit: Now I got an e-mail saying there gonna despatch the Omnibus volume!
Dammit… I could not find the SJ at Walmart this time. My day was bad until I got my OP volumes in the mail. 22 and 23, and a Vixbig of DB Vol3 Vizbig.
I'll just try again in 2 days.
Edit: Wow... Vizbigs are more awesome than I thought. I wonder if OP would get some soon. If so, I'm better off waiting a couple of years for some.... Atleast until W7 and TB(I'm going to halt collecting after Skypiea, since I have from Davy Back Fight to the end of Thriller Bark in japanese).
Edit again: Not sure if this is old, but there's a blurb on Skypiea. http://shonenjump.viz.com/features/index.php?id=293
Anybody want to scan SJ One Piece information? I'd buy it except… No, I probably wouldn't. But does anybody wanna help out despite my cheapness?
Edited: Sorry, for some reason the part about scanning didn't get posted. I was sure I typed it in. ... Weird.
Anybody SJ One Piece information?
…Huh?
Got my volume 23 yesterday. Anyone else notice that "Gatling Gun" has been shortened/changed to Gatling?
They've been switching between the two ever since it first showed up. It was Gatling Gun in Vol. 4, became just Gatling in Vol. 10, and then started using Gatling Gun again in Vol. 20. It's an on-and-off cycle.
I thought it was always Gatling… I don't pay attention too much.
Edit: Finished reading both 22 and 23. Small gripe, nothing major since it has the same meaning "sign of our fellowship"... I suppose "friendship" sounded like Yugioh....
Volume 23 shipped yesterday, so should be here tomorrow…it BETTER be here tomorrow.
Finished 23. Moving story ending.
…
SO LONG, ALABASTA~~!
I just read 525 on Viz's site, did anyone catch the Treasure Island reference in there? I thought it was kinda clever myself.
I see they're still using their Neptunian localization. They're being consistent at least, since I'm pretty sure they simply used ''sea monster'' in parts of the recent volumes in places that just used Sea King originally.
Yeah Viz is all over the place with the Sea kings. They refer all of them as sea monster but became neptunians once they hit the grand line. The use sea king as a species by itself.
I'm not sure if its been posted here but I noted that the issue contained 'Franky', 'Brook', 'Hancock' and 'Gear Three'. I also noticed that berry was spelt 'berri' in one of the pannels on their 'nihongo lesson' page. Which Hancock was censored for the introduction page, Alvida wasn't at all so i'm guessing its a similar situtation to the FUNimation DVDs and their censored Alabasta stock art.cI've also compared the translation to the Franky House scanlation and I can report that it does seem to have a very accurate translation. Viz are doing much better these days and I hope the quality is kept at this better consistency.
Hey guys I forget, does volume 23 have the chapter where Vivi tells of her adventure and decides to not go with the straw hats? If so its the last Alabasta book right?
I sware every time I read that, I cry.
Yeah. It ends with them all flashing thier "Symbols of Fellowship/Friendship".
Vol. 23 is indeed the very end of Alabasta. Ends with ''The Holy X Scene'' as Greg calls it.
It won't be long before the official English versions of One Piece are finally free of the Alabasta arc. Can't wait to pick up my copy this weekend.
I think via anime and manga we've been in baroque works in some way, shape or form for five years.
I just got the new magazine in the mail. Really loving it so far!
I could not find it at Walmart agian… Damned Twilight stocking up the shelves.
That's Very Good, one of the 200 captains from the Buster Call at Enies Lobby.
He ate the Beri Fruit so as a result became a berryman and control his berry body. That's why he's in pieces in the chapter cover you're referring to after getting beaten up by CP9.
@Vegard:
"Mero Mero" basically means "Madly in love", so yeah, that's a perfectly acceptable translation of it.
thanks to both of you

I found my copy at CVS
Checked my CVS and Walmart again… This is hopeless.
My local B&N had Volume 23 and the three-in-one. My word, what were those printed on? Even #23's cover is completely different from the others.

Different as in better or worse?
Amazon finally shipped my vol 23, it took them 3 days to despatch it. Still waiting for the omnibus edition to ship.
Different as in worse. Seriously, I think the cover is printed on the same stuff as the pages.

I did not notice that, and I own 1-23.
The volume 23 I held in my hands at the store was definently flimsy, but I've got no idea it that's just a one time mishap or not, as there was but one copy.
How much are the Big One Piece volumes. i may collect those to save shelf space on my ookcase
Hmm flimsy…can it be compared to the covers of other series?
Like KHR! has very high gloss covers (they're actually okay)
Tegami Bachi, Death Note, Black Cat, and Gintama have the no gloss covers (I like those best from the SJ lineup)
etc.
Can anybody tell me if the big volumes are actually 3 OP volumes combined into one, or just a bunch of volumes put into a nice-looking box?
@ Truth - pretty sure it's 3 volumes into 1
Also, if I may go off topic, how do you guys think "Franky HENTAI!" will be translated? Will Viz keep "hentai" and put a little footnote to elaborate, or maybe throw away the pun all together and simply use "transform"? I'm trying to think of a way Viz can translate the pun accurately.
They'll probably skip it entirely.
They'll probally go with pervert or something… That's what I seen uni use in their subs.
If anyone hasn't noticed yet, Viz fixed the "Frankie" spelling on their front page back to Franky but Sniperking is still there.
I have held the 1-2-3 book in my hand and it is simply three books binded together at the same height as the normal volumes with too many pages for the binding, which was curved on all four volumes at my local Borders. The paper isn't too nice but there is some color.
That does not sound very nice… May as well wait for a Vizbig(I just got one for Dragonball Vol3, and it's pretty damned awesome).
Anyone else besides me excited for the stickers being included in next year's volumes?
I personally think the "Sniperking" sticker'll look amazingly epic
Stickers are nice but I don't know what I'll use them on. I'll probably end up sticking them on a sheet of bristol for my wall.
I would have liked at least one poster of a color spread.
I never know what to do with stickers.. I usually just leave them on the paper. I'd rather have stuff like bookmarks etc.
i take the stickers and put them on my door or mini fridge in my room. and i have one on my computer monitor. im thinking about getting them all first, then setting them up in a nice looking order and putting them on my wall or closet door, because fridge is running out of room
Just a quick question. i live in england so i don't think i can buy shonen jump but i can get the volumes and so i was wondering.
The shonen jump sounds like it gets edited but by what i've read in the volumes (i currently have 1-13 but getting more 4 christmas) i doesnt seem like anythings different from the original except for a few mistranslations (zolo) and abscence of swearing.
Everything else like death and destruction is still there so im wondering are the volumes edited in anyway like the SJ seems to be?
^ No other edits other than you already mentioned. The art is pretty much intact.
And oh, I noticed Croc saying "Blasted Straw Hat!!" or something along the lines in Vol 23. Not sure if that means something, but I suppose nothing else could have fit in that context (they did use "That crap king" however…).
In the volumes themselves the only edits as far as artwork goes is changing the L to an R on the Loguetown sign and Zoro's bounty poster, as well as removing a manji from the shirt of some random guy in the Loguetown arc. So no, compared to the magazine, they're barely touched.
Speaking of the magazine, I happened to read the new chapters the other day, and I liked it a lot. It was pretty cool seeing relatively recent material in the magazine finally. I liked reading the back and forth between Hannyabal and Magellan, they did a good job with all of the poison puns. And I think this is the first time that Buggy has actually said flashy in the Viz translation. Oh yeah, the ''Where's my riot?'' line made me chuckle too.
Oh yeah, Vol. 23 definitely feels a little lightweight compared to the others. I think the pages are a tad bit thinner, but still much sturdier than the stuff in the magazine and the the omnibuses.
If Viz downgraded the paper, they wouldn't be the first. Tokyopop did this about a year back. I hope you can't see through the paper, because that's how Tokyopop's releases are…
I don't think they are that terrible(Tokyopop that is).
@Mikey:

The paper's not quite that thin. Maybe if you squint real hard and try to see through, you can, but it's not really noticeable either way. Not to that extent, at least.
do they edit ace's tattoo in the volumes?
I don't believe so. The tattoo was edited in the Japanese release and Viz just kept it. I liked the swastika too  .
Ace's tattoo isn't edited in volume 18.
It's never edited. Oda himself changed it after that because he had to….I guess they were afraid the manji would be mistaken as a swastika.
Actually it would be better for continuity if they changed Whitebeard's flag in volume 24 or 25, but since they left Ace's tattoo, I doubt they will.

Yeah, it does feel a little lighter… On the other hand, I doubt the pages are actually any thinner, as I compared the thickness of the book to volume 18, (which, as far as I know, is the only other 11-chapter volume that's been released in English) and they were pretty much identical.
On another-but-still-very-much-related note, this was also the first time I saw how the "mark of friendship"-scene was in the manga... To be honest, I didn't think it was as good as it was in the anime/movie. It just felt like, I dunno, it was too short?
Well, in terms of animation pacing on a two page spread, the time should be content of two pages. I thought it was a great wrap up in the manga, as there was not much need to stretch it with more pages.
This is just my opinion, but I always prefer the manga pacing to the anime pacing. It's not as drawn out.
