So, if most characters are going to realistically sized, would Dorry and Brogy be shortened down as well?

@Gizmo Steven Maeda actually made the commitment to read every single chapter of the manga at the time to catch up. Will this guy do the same? Though as long as Oda supervises the show like he did with season 1, there shouldn't be any drastic change to the point of being unfaithful with the source material.
-
@JustaGuy There's a million things about that image that seem sus, but apart from anything else, why would a confidential document like that have the series' logo printed on it? Big productions use working titles to avoid situations like this.
-
Yeah I'm pretty sure that's complete garbage basically just trolling her fans.
-
Just seen the news of the co-showrunner and of course its been on here for over a week. Media stay late on OP news. I need to look at these threads more often
-
@Cockycent There's also a lot of misinformation out there too. I think someone shared something in this thread about increased episode counts that hasn't been corroborated by any major sources. It seems like a quote taken out of context.
It is a shame that Deadline and Variety and THR are so slow behind the fans, but Deadline's article also comes with the nugget that they are aiming for a 2025 premiere (and not as some fans have predicted, early 2026).

That's neat, and I'll take it as sign they'll put some good effect into Little Garden. It's a small arc, and not the most popular in hindsight, so I admit the idea of them cutting it down entered my head but seeing this suggests it might get the same amount of time as other arcs, and that's just fine.

Looks like the casting call for Season 2 have begun.

Everything i've seen talked about before this series was announced and up until it was released has become a huge back and forth as far as what is covered and how to manage the episode count.
I see the GrandLine guy being called negative for things that I believe are real concerns. Will Logue Town be covered and if so, will you finish Alabasta saga in this second season?
I preferred the 1st season stop at Baratie before watching. After watching, I was okay with where they went to. My reasoning was this cliffhanger with Nami being gone + all the mess with Sanji's story/Zoro vs Mihawk/defeating Krieg would have suffice as a great ending. They turned Garp and the Koby meter up and turned Krieg down to adjust and I find that cool from a writing perspective. Looking at the story today, Koby is a big part of the future. Enhancing his involvement for EB Saga is a great choice.
I still really like the Krieg source material, but it is a fair trade.
I still think there should be a sort of preview to Alabasta arc and most of S2 should be Ace/preview of BW/Smoker/Vivi. What do you change here? Enhance Robin more? My concern with Alabasta is that it is a Civil War, Marines are chasing the crew, exploration of the desert/casino/palace and most importantly introduction of PG.
I'm all about writers doubling down or being daring. Do you make a huge move and pull PGs out completely lol? They haven't done that before, but something up that alley would be impressive. Something so huge for Robin and the world, just removed completely. Anything is possible, this is just an example and not a preference.
To me, it is not chapter count. It is content. The crew don't need the Rain Dinners conflict, chase through Nanohana, or the Toto subplot to showcase Alabasta's endurance. The rest of the content is necessary.
As far as fights, this show has done well to display them and they play around the same segment. The 1st PG that unleashes a bag of worms for the story is just a big deal. On top of that, do you even use the bomb?

We've seen what an Alabasta without those things look like in movie 8 and they threw the baby out with the bathwater.
Rain Dinners is the beating heart of the Alabasta saga, imo. People like to boil down the sequence to Mr. Prince, but it's so much more than that: the collision of the crew and Smoker with Crocodile, it gives us the emotional context necessary to want to see Crocodile defeated, it's a great display of Vivi's character and it's the biggest turning point in Smoker's relationship with Luffy.
The essentials of Alabasta (and One Piece at large) are the characters and Rain Dinners is the strongest use of those characters in the arc. There are other ways of conveying that character sure, but if the priorities of this adaptation aren't the characters, then what is the point? Do we care about seeing Alabasta saved if we don't see how hard Vivi is fighting to protect it, even fighting an opponent she can't win against? How important is Alabasta to her when the lives of her friends are on the line? Is Luffy even necessary if Crocodile isn't a despicable force of nature? What's the point of having Smoker around if he doesn't get the chance to see the Straw Hats' true motives that complicate his own sense of justice?
These are the kinds of questions I think the live action will live and die on. And season 1 may not have answered them the same way Oda did, but its success is that it still answered these important character questions.
-
@Kitsune-Inferno You sound like me before the show came on. I can't refute what you said. I get it.

@Gizmo said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
8 episodes doesn't sound good, unless they are like 80 minutes long.
They have 120 chapters to cover instead of 95 from first season, it's going to be even more rushed, won't it?
-
8(?) episodes is dicey, you'd basicially have to rush through LogueTown/Reverse Mountain in episode 1....episode 2 whisky peak.....
now if Miss Golden Week is being cast it would imply Mr. 3 but they could condense the Giants/Whisky Peak together, depends on what they're aiming for. I had imagined Drum for at least two episodes, I know you can shave off stuff in Alabasta like movie 8 so it's not impossible, but a lot of smaller moments will get lost.
ex) like sea cat or thief birds or maybe even dugongs??? all the cgi budget might be aimed for chopper haha
-
If I didn't know any better, I'd say things are shaping up for season 2 to start at Loguetown and wrap up at Drum Island. The entirety of Alabasta may be season 3. I'd actually probably prefer that, this way it can be properly paced and fleshed out.
Unless they specifically said somewhere this season will include Alabasta too and I'm missing something.
-
@MugiMikey This was my initial thought, but I backed off of it. Including Goldenweek makes me want to revisit that.
-
8 episodes for Rogue Town through Alabasta seems like they'd need to go way too fast.
Unless season 2 ends mid-Alabasta? And then season 3 Is the rest of Alabasta, Jaya and Skypiea. Not sure how feasible that would be though. -
Guys, some of your reasoning seems off after we've seen how they dealt with the first season.
Plenty of stuff got shortened, moved around, straight up cut or just changed to deal with the pace of a live action series.Orange Town and Buggy was nothing like the original, Syrup Village also had plenty of changes, Baratie switched Luffy's fight with Don Krieg to a first encounter with Arlong, etc etc.
They will absolutely make the same level of changes with season two and the Arabasta saga.We can get Logue Town in one episode, Laboon and Whiskey Peak in another, Little Garden in one or two episodes, another two for Drum, and the rest of the season for mainland Arabasta.
I can see them keeping all the fights with the Baroque Works top agents but it won't be half an hour fights that take up a full episode like in the anime, it will be half an hour for all the fights taking up half a episode, like they did with the attack on Arlong Park. -
I couldn't see them placing Alabasta in season three, because a 12-18 months wait would absolutely kill the momentum. To make that split satisfying, you'd have to rewrite the arc at a foundational level to disconnect it from Whiskey Peak/Little Garden/Drum Island.
I wonder if Season Two will follow the two-episode arc formula? If they're actually doing Little Garden and only have eight episodes, then Alabasta be simplified to just two episodes.
-
I'm just not so sure about season 2 going all the way up to Alabasta, because we all thought season 1 would cover up to the end of Loguetown but didn't for pacing reasons, which makes me think they may do the same thing here and end it with Drum Island for season 2. To me, 8 episodes just doesn't seem like it'd be enough to cover Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, and Alabasta. On paper, yes, it should, but again... Loguetown. I don't doubt that if they wanted to include it all the way up to Alabasta, they could, just like they could have switched more things around in season 1 to include Loguetown. It'd just require some sacrifices I'm not sure they'd be willing to make.
Loguetown to Alabasta is already way more material than what they covered in season 1, and if it's actually 8 episodes for season 2, they'd be stuck in the same predicament.
To me the pacing of this show is already pretty wack, but I'd be really interested in seeing what kind of changes they'd need to make to cram Alabasta in there.
-
@MugiMikey said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
we all thought season 1 would cover up to the end of Loguetown but didn't for pacing reasons
I don't think they're really compatible, as Loguetown is an epilogue (heh) to the East Blue and Arlong Park is the climax. Loguetown is about setting up the Grand Line and not paying off the East Blue; even Buggy and Alvida just end up chasing after the Straw Hats without really accomplishing anything.
Whereas getting to Alabasta is the ticking clock that drives the Baroque Works plot. On Whiskey Peak, the Straw Hats are given a specific goal that they have to achieve and they don't stop moving until Crocodile is defeated. Plus, Vivi temporarily joining the crew distinguishes that arc from everything before and after. If Season Two ends before they reach Alabasta, then the viewers have to wait while the story is supposed to be charging forward. And if Season Three opens with Alabasta, then you have all of the conflict resolved at the beginning of the season and end up going back to 'Episode One mode' several episodes in.
I would argue that moving Arlong's early involvement in Season One brings the live-action East Blue's structure closer to the manga's Baroque Works arc.
-
Hopping through 6 islands in 8 episodes seems a little crazy to me, an adventure needs time to breathe and Alabasta in particular would feel crippled if you just reduce It to two episodes, even without the long fights.
I can't see Drum lasting less than two episodes, either. Chopper's flashback alone is still very iconic to the series and deserves to be told in its entirety.Eh, we'll see.
-
Alabasta can't be anything less than 3 episodes. This was a first grand arc in One Piece and they should aim to evoke that feeling in the show as well.
I'm totally in for the idea of giving Alabasta a separate season. This would help the show tremendously budget-wise, as Alabasta is a whole freaking country with many different locations that SH's visit. The number of sets they would have to built if they wanted to follow the manga even semi-faithfully is pretty big. Not to mention the budget they will have to spent on all the devil fruit powers.
Short term it may be jarring to end a season before the climax of Vivi's story, but at the same time it would serve as a great hook for the third season, if they refocus the season's story towards maybe finding a doctor it could work pretty well.
-
I'd be shocked if they go that route. How would that bode for the future of the show then? They would have to split up so many arcs into multiple seasons that we'd be looking at a 20-season series! That's even more inconceivable than what we have to start with if we expect each season to cover roughly one major saga.
Plus, it just would make S2 seem so lackluster. I like all of the Grand Line arcs pre-Alabasta well enough, but aside from Drum, none are outstanding, and Drum, which would then mark the season finale, is completely disconnected from the Baroque Works plot and suffers from a rather weak villain (I love Wapol but an intimidating foe, he is not).
I'd agree that Drum needs two and Alabasta 3 episodes, but Logue Town, Whiskey Peak and Little Garden all fit into one episode per arc nicely. Have people forgotten how low on plot these three arcs really are? Loguetown is literally just five chapters in the manga. Five! Does that even need a whole episode to itself? They can (and should be) at the very least at Laboon's at the end of episode 1. Whiskey Peak is just them partying, Zoro kills everybody and the Baroque Works/Sir Crocodile reveal plus Robin showing up. S1 had to introduce 5 main characters, all with their individual backstories, set of side characters and their respective arc villains in 8 episodes. The only new characters that need this much attention in S2 are Vivi and Chopper. Just the fact that they don't have to tell a full backstory every second episode for a new main character will give them plenty more time for the main story.
Not to mention that characters will be cut and storylines will be changed or abbreviated , just like they were in S1.
-
But let's give this a bit more in-depth look at which plot points and characters they need (or will most likely) keep and which might get cut or changed to a fair extent.
Loguetown
I think they'll keep the arc structure mostly intact with some smaller changes here and there, similarly to how they covered the Romance Dawn arc in S01E01. So, we'll get Zoro buying his cursed sword, we'll get the introduction of Tashigi and Smoker and of Logia powers in general, we'll get Buggy and Alvida trying (and failing) to murder Luffy (because Buggy is awesome so of course he'll be back asap), and we'll get Dragon saving Luffy. Some details will be chhanged, naturally, but it will be mostly the same as the manga was. But the thing is, that's not much story? How long does it really take to tell the story of this arc? 30 minutes or so? I'd say that's enough, especially since they already did the "vow" scene in S1. Will they give Sanji, Nami and Usopp something to do? I doubt they'll cover any of the filler stuff from the anime.
I could see them having a scene or two with Garp, Koby and Helmeppo for the premiere - their roles will certainly be reduced in comparison to S1, but I'm sure the writers will want to check in with them a few times so audiences won't forget the characters exist. Maybe Garp will be informed that Smoker is now trailing Luffy and tell Koby how dangerous he is or something, to hype the character up. Oh, this might also be a good way of showing us the Calm Belt without having to make it a plot point that the crew needs to go there and see the giant monsters for themselves. Nami explains to the crew why they can't just sail straight into the Grand Line but have to go through River's Mountain instead. Then we cut to the Marines sailing across the Calm Belt - we see giant monstruous shadows swimming underneath the ships, Koby is scared and Garp explains why the sea kings won't attack Marine ships or something along those lines.
Anyway, even with these extra scenes, I'd say we still have a good 10-15 minutes of screentime left to cover the crew finally sailing into the Grand Line. I think it's indisputable this needs to happen in the first episode of the season.
Laboon/Whiskey Peak
Either this all be placed in episode two, or some of the Laboon section will already be covered by the end of the first episode. Either way, in contrast to Loguetown, there is soooo much they could potentially cut from this arc. Laboon and Crocus will be there, certainly, since they are necessary for Brook's backstory later on. But will the crew still be swallowed by Laboon? Will they keep the fact that Crocus basically turned Laboon into a living submarine from the inside, with painted on walls, tunnels and stuff? I doubt it - that stuff is really insane and out there if you think about it. As is Luffy actually fighting against a giant whale and ramming the ship's mast into its body.
Maybe they'll just have Crocus saving them from being eaten by the whale, he tells them Laboon's backstory and then Baroque Works attacks and the Strawhats save everybody. Crocus still needs to explain how the Log Pose works, of course.
So, our introduction to Baroque Works and Vivi...will the crew even sail to Whiskey Peak. Maybe they'll connect Laboon's section and the Whiskey Peak section of the plot more closely and have everything take place at the same location? Whiskey Peak is a cool place, don't get me wrong, but it's not exactly iconic or unique. They might change a lot about this story. The whole part with the Baroque Works agents acting like harmless citizens and getting the crew drunk might be cut - it's all fun stuff, to be sure, but it's not really integral to the plot, you know? I bet they'll keep Zoro taking out most of the agents by himself. It's an amazing action sequence and they already handled Zoro's fight scenes pretty well in the first season.
Luffy's and Zoro's fight, I'm pretty sure, will be cut. It's funny, but in a crazy, cartoon-y kind-of-senseless way. Luffy not trusting and actually trying to murder Zoro is out-of-character even for manga-Luffy - can you really see the somewhat more sensible and relatable LA-version doing this without completely alienating the audience? I feel like it would seem lees funny and more like Luffy was completely deranged and unlikable if he just started attacking his friends on a whim, just like you can't have LA-Nami beating up Luffy all the time.
Again, I wonder how they'll handle the rest of the crew for this portion of the story. Nami gets stuff to do, but Usopp and Sanji would basically sit out the first two episodes if they keep things close to the manga.
Vivi and the other Baroque Works agents in Whiskey Peak: There are a multitude of ways they could handle this. First of all, I doubt we'll get much of Miss Monday and Mr. 9 - they are pretty tertiary characters overall, at most they'll be extended cameo characters that quickly get defeated by the Strawhats. Vivi herself, well, here's the thing: the whole Miss Wednesday thing always felt a little weird to me. It's a cool out-of-nowhere twist but it kind of falls apart once you get to know Vivi. She's just such an honest, kind and genuine person that it seems unbelievable in retrospect that she managed to convincingly act so villainous and mean-spirited. So either, they'll show some early signs of her being a good person to better setup the reveal, or they'll just skip the whole Miss Wednesday thing and just have her be a prisoner of Baroque Works or something that recently got caught trying to uncover the boss' identity.
Karoo and Igaram - I hope they keep Karoo - I love that duck! - but I can totally see them cutting him for budget reasons Aas for Igaram, it could go either way - I feel like you need the shock of Robin seemingly murdering him to sell her as an untrustworthy person and apparent villain. One of the few times were a character being revealed to be still alive actually makes sense.
Obviously, they also need to include the whole reveal about Sir Crocodile being the head of Baroque Works and their goal of taking Vivi home to Alabasta as their main goal for the season. Looking at things like this and depending on how much they keep from Whiskey Peak, they'll probably either need 1 1/2 or two whole episodes for this part of the story. I'll share my thoughts on Little Garden, Drum and Alabasta later.

I'd say we still have a good 10-15 minutes of screentime left to cover the crew finally sailing into the Grand Line.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have Buggy and/or Smoker pursue the Straw Hats all the way to Reverse Mountain to keep the plot moving forward. Otherwise you'd have the episode essentially end but then 'keep going' for another 15 minutes or so.
@Riddler said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
Maybe they'll connect Laboon's section and the Whiskey Peak section of the plot more closely and have everything take place at the same location?
I think they'll have to, for the same reasons as above. I sure they'll have to adapt both stories in one episode, and it would feel very strange to resolve Laboon's arc 10 minutes into an episode. The first half of Romance Dawn is pretty chaotic, and it only gets away with the Alvida scenes because they're presented as just a means for Luffy and Koby to become friends.
@Riddler said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
I love that duck! - but I can totally see them cutting him for budget reasons
Eh, they went to the trouble of showing Luffy talking to a News Coo when they absolutely didn't have to. If there are budgetary issues, I'd expect them to show a manga-accurate Karoo but have him stay on the boat (off-screen) most of the time - like K9 in Doctor Who.
-
Thinking about it, it could work like this:
Ep. 1 - Logue Town
Ep. 2 - Calm Belt / Laboon / Whiskey Peak (maybe they don't actually go to Whiskey Peak and everything happens at the capes?)
Ep. 3 - Little Garden (a bit cramped but it could work in a single episode, it's already a short arc and most of it is fights)
Ep. 4/5 - Drum
Ep. 6/7/8 - Alabasta -
@Zanze That's how I'm picturing it.
Except maybe the Calm Belt happening before they go to Logue Town. And for much as I love Whiskey Peak, both for the vibes and plot, I also see that island as the easiest to cut. Maybe get more agents to attack Laboon and get Vivi to join there and off to Little Garden they go.
-
Whiskey Peak really doesn't have much of a story on its own - it's all setup for the Alabasta saga, introducing us to Vivi and Baroque Works and starting the mission of returning her safely to Alabasta. Little Garden at least has the story of the giants and the unique dinosaur jungle setting to set itself apart from the other arcs.
-
I can see them skipping Whiskey Peak and move the important characters & story beats to little garden.
Maybe split up the crew and give each of them their own little adventure, we don’t necessarily need all the straw hats fighting Mr. 3 and Mr. 5. -

That's the appeal of Whiskey Peak.
It's kinda of a small detour, they just spend half a night there, and the island itself bears little weight, it's just a cool idea of an island full of bounty hunters pretending to love pirates right at the start of the Grand Line that looks like a cactus because of all the tombstones.
And then it has some cool little moments where we see the StrawHats personalities shine. Sanji being a womanizer, Ussop telling tall tales, Nami deceiving everybody in the drinking game and then being cunning with the negotiations, Zoro being a badass taking out 100 bounty hunters (which was part of what gave him his first bounty), and Luffy's care and respect for someone who feeds him.
Alot of set ups too for the rest of the arc too, with the numbered agents, Igaram and Vivi's true identity. But honestly, all of that can be moved around to almost any other location of the Arabasta Saga.
I can see Vivi's true identity being revealed right besides Laboon and then she telling the crew to straight up avoid BH hideout at Whiskey Peak and they just sail past it.
Luffy's anger at someone messing with food is also played out at Little Garden. Zoro can take out a whole battalion during the scenes at the capital. -
I almost wonder if they don't finish Alabasta arc in season 2 and end either as they arrive or after the Ace and Smoker section - and then season 3 finishes Alabasta and also adds in Jaya.
-
Whiskey Peak, if they do plan to do it can just be on Little Garden or not at all. Luffy broke the Eternal Pose that Robin gave him anyway. Content is what is important and those get labels between essential for arc to still work vs non essential.
Many things I love can be taken out or downsized for them to get from point A to B.
-
This is super interesting to read.
-
Damn, I messed up, it's over. They're gonna take out the wholesome Lapin moments out.
-
Season 2 will end with Little Garden. We're actually getting 1 episode of Loguetown, 1 episode of Reverse Mountain, 4 episodes of Whiskey Peak and 2 episodes of Little Garden.
Chopper will only appear in the post-credits.
If one of you says "Whiskey Peak can be cut/merged" one more time, Oda said he'll make it five episodes of Whiskey Peak, he doesn't give a fuck.

my two cents is that slow paced and having more than 50% of everything in the source material remaining is not going to be possible.
This isn't the older generation demographic that Netflix/whoever is in charge is catering to. If it isn't obvious enough, the netflix adaptation actually chop off more than 50% of the stuff that was in the source material. Stuff that mattered to enough fans. In exchange we got a whole side story with Garp and Coby (that Oda didn't want at all) that had divided opinions.
So no, it's not a matter of "hey do we have enough time to do this or that" as much as its hey what's interesting, isn't slow and only needs an attention span of our lowest denominator in the audience, something, anything needs to be happening at all times. If the character isn't coming up again in the future (for that GOT-esque million dollar idea that's been milked to dead) or if the straw hats don't have any key character moments with said character/(s), you can pretty much count them out. I'm not saying it will happen because it already happened. Usopp's gang was vital to his character and even that didn't matter.
I think people fail to realize that the One Piece is more than this GoT/revolving doors of narratives from key characters but is also the world that they inhabit. A TON of characters we meet in arcs/adventures don't appear again at all. Or if they do, it's in a small panel and they go about their life. And OPLA was dogshit at that. Everyone that's introduced that will be re-introduced in the future is revered and given more screentime and everyone that is not (see Genzo, Nojiko) is a fucking NPC. You can't tell me with a straight face that any of the villages' characters has enough screentime/good acting or lines for you to care in the live action. Less the main characters parental figures of course.
This is the difference between an author giving love to the sidest of all side characters and a showrunner ranking them based on story/audience attention relevancy. I'm not saying the latter is wrong but oh my god can you feel it. There's really no hoping that that mentality will somehow give you a meaningful "insert side character of your choice in future arcs".
This has to do with budget but its really a matter of priortization. Oh is this useful for our "insert grand narrative, GoT million dollar projection storytelling"? If not, off to the bin.
I do think that's the best logic to view the live action. Honestly, when you experienced the vibrantness and depth of the world found in the source material, OPLA is like a ghost town in comparison. But of course, the opposing side will always shout at that arguement with "not enough time/money" and ignore the fact that if they can do that entire coby subplot that IS unnecessary, then they can do Usopp's character alot more justice. They can do Genzo justice. You know, people might not care about those characters but at that point when Oda was penning down the East Blue Saga, he did. That's a part of the heart and soul that is often overlooked. There's almost zero chance that Ace will not get more attention and that a shit ton of characters that was contributary to the main cast's development/characterization will be shelved because "hey Ace appears later, we can make this world grander, look at us we are so fucking smart".
It is a fair arguement that the OPLA does have limited episodes and budget but that does not justify everything. I don't hate the OPLA, but it will always be the less superior and watered down version compared to the source material. If it goes the way I think it will, it'll likely be a different version of One Piece altogether.
-
So apparently
-
what are the chances that igaram and pell will be merged as the same character.
that way you'll give him enough screentime for audience + luffy to be attached to the character and then when that scene happens it will make an impact. -
@zeltrax225
I think you forgot that characters die in OPLA, so maybe Igraham and or Pell actually die when they make their sacrifices.Of course some characters could be merged, but I don’t see those two being merged together.

@The-Light-of-Shandora that's the scene I'm talking about though and yeah, I paid attention to merry when didn't appear again

@Riddler said in Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers):
But let's give this a bit more in-depth look at which plot points and characters they need (or will most likely) keep and which might get cut or changed to a fair extent.
Loguetown
[...]I now want to take a closer look at the other arcs that will be adapted for S2, namely Little Garden and Drum.
Little Garden
So by my previous calculations, the first two episodes should more or less cover Loguetown/Whiskey Peak, which means that Little Garden would start in episode three. And I honestly think that one episode is more than enough for this little arc. I know you can't strictly go by chapter number, as the content of the chapters also matters, but in the manga, the Orange Town arc was around 14 chapters long and was covered one LA episode. The Little Garden arc is just one chapter longer and there is nothing in its plot that really demands further exploration.
The story is honestly pretty simple and straightforward: Strawhats arrive at an island where dinosaurs and two giants live. Strawhats meet and befriend the giants. Baroque Works attacks giants and captures some of the Strawhats. Strawhats beat up Baroque Works and leave. The End. I don't see any reason to extend that to two episodes personally.
I think they'll show the dinosaurs once or twice, but not much more to save budget. It's not like the dinosaurs actually play much of a role in the original story either (seriously, is it just me or did Oda totally waste the story element that the crew was on an island with freaking dinosaurs?? I guess Wano sort of made up for this with all the dinosaur devil fruit users among the Beast pirates...)
Obviously, they'll keep the giants, since they are kind of the main point of the arc. Personally, I really hope they'll focus on Usopp's relationship with the giants and make this his episode. The character really needs some love after he was sort of shafted in S1, and this is a great opportunity to give some spotlight to Usopp, his dream and his skills as well. The fight against Mr. 3 is pretty much about brawns vs. brains. It establishes that Luffy's weak point is enemies that manipulate and use psychological tricks to defeat their opponents. I think they'll keep the part about Zoro, Nami and Vivi being captured (and Sanji being off wherever), so it's finally Usopp's time to shine!
Speaking of Baroque Works, they'll definitely keep Mr. 3 as the villain of the arc, though I wonder if they'll keep his crazy, three-shaped hair lol. That means he needs a partner, unless they ditch the aspect that the agents always work in pairs ( I don't think they will), so Miss Goldenweek should be in, as well. And why not, her powers aren't hard to portray and she's kinda fun! Now, the Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine pair, I'm unsure about. I've left them out of my discussion of Whiskey Peak, as I could really see it going several different ways: I could see them being introduced in Whiskey Peak as in the manga, but I could also see them being introduced in Little Garden alongside the Mr. 3 pair. I could also see them being left out completely, but that would be a bit of a shame: I actually think they are kind of cool and underrated! Plus, it increases Mr. 3's threat level if he has the Mr. 5 pair backing him up.
The fight itself certainly will have some changes here and there, but I think they'll keep the general gist of Mr. 3 intervening in the giants' fight and capturing most of the other characters in wax to turn them into wax figures. They might skip his giant candle set and his weird battle suit though.
Drum Island
Drum is the first arc of the season that I think needs and deserves two whole episodes, which would mean that by my count, the arc would be covered in S02E04 and E05. That said, while I absolutely love this arc, there is a lot of it you can absolutely change or cut from it. If you think about it, there are really three iconic, important and/or beloved parts of the arcs they absolutely need to keep and nail:
-
Luffy carrying the sick Nami on his back while climbing up the icy mountain.
-
Chopper's backstory
-
Chopper's character and his relationship with Kureha.
These are the things I remember fondly when I think about this arc. Luffy carrying Nami up the mountain is such a character-defining moment for both of them - the fact that Nami not only trusts Luffy this much but is also willing to risk her life this way in order to help Vivi quickly says so much about her bond with the crew and Luffy in particular has grown. And I'll also never forget Luffy, his body already turning blue from the cold, his fingers and toes bloody, doing everything he can to save his crewmember. I think this is absolutely a moment where many readers finally grow to really respect Luffy and fall in love with his character.
I also could see them milking the drama of Nami's illness a bit more. In the manga/anime, she pretty much immediately recovers after the endeavor with the mountain is over. In the LA, maybe they'll have a bit of medical drama, focusing on Chopper saving her life.
So, Chopper. I can make no predictions about how he'll look - nailing Chopper will perhaps be the most important part of S2, really. After all, he has to have the same presence as other main characters in the following seasons, he can't look offputting, he has to be able to perform in action sequences as well. Assuming that they manage to portray him well, obviously his character and his backstory have to be done justice to. In a way, the plot of Drum doesn't really matter that much - it's an arc centered around its emotional moments.
Aside from Chopper, Kureha and Hiriluk are naturally the other two important characters of the arc that need to be captured well. I think they'll soften both characters up a bit and reduce some of their more unlikable traits from the manga - but overall, I think their key characteristics and important emotional moments will be left in.
Everything else about the arc could be changed drastically. The rest of the crew doesn't really have a lot of moments, to be honest. I hope they'll keep Vivi's little moment at the start of the arc, where she teaches Luffy a little diplomacy - I feel in the manga, that's the first time where you really get a good grasp of her character. Otherwise, what else is there? Usopp builds a snowman, Zoro fights a few of Wapol's men, Sanji tries to help and then, once again, is out of commission for most of the action - a lot of the crewmembers really don't get to do much in many of these early Grand Line arcs!
I can see the Lapahns getting cut and Dalton will most likely have a reduced role, perhaps akin to Genzo's role in the LA version of Arlong Park. Wapol and his goons? They'll keep Wapol, of course, but man, who knows how much of the actual conflict and fights will be left in. Wapol is fun, but his powers are absolutely bonkers. His henchmen are completely forgettable (then again, they did leave in the Nyaban
BrothersSiblings) and their fight against Luffy and Chopper is nothing to write home about. As much as I like Wapol as a character, he's probably one of the weakest arc villains in terms of fights? On the other hand, though, he provides an absolutely vile and corrupt, easy-to-hate villain that serves as a nice counterpoint to Cobra's benevolent monarch in the Alabasta arc. So I think they'll keep these aspects of his characters and some of his fighting powers (maybe him turning his hands into cannons or something) but abbreviate the action a lot. That'll give them time to focus on some other things - I'm sure we'll get some scenes of Smoker and Tashigi in the meantime, and whatever other characters they might want to focus on aside from the Strawhats.
On the discord channel, I also brought up the possibility of introducing Ace early by having him meet Luffy at Drum instead of Alabasta. If you remember, in the manga, he shows up in Drum anyway, which makes sense since it was attacked by Blackbeard, but there was no reason given why he then traveled to Alabasta (I know the anime gave a reason in a filler episode). Ace always felt kind of tagged on to the Alabasta arc in the manga to me, he meets the crew and then quickly leaves again. In the anime, he travels with the crew a bit longer, which is nice since both the crew and the audience gets to know him a bit better, but him leaving instead of, you know, helping out the crew in their fight against Crocodile is a tad weird.
If he appears on Drum instead, it makes a bit more sense: you can't really ask him to just travel to a whole other island on a whim, especially if Blackbeard's trail is still hot. This would free up some time for the Alabasta episodes, as you could then basically skip the Nanohana section (the crew could encounter Smoker and Tashigi at Rainbase instead - the two encounters in the manga are very similar anyway).
I'll give my thoughts on how they might handle the Alabasta arc later.
