Chapter 959: Samurai
-
Damn, that chapter was dense. I feel like I'll need to read it five more times. One thing stood out to me, though. oden's legs looking great, lmao.
-
Enma!
Sanji vs. Zoro will never end.
-
Oda's gotten really comfortable using these little flashbacks and non-linear storytelling and half the time they're not even necessary. Why did we need this chapter at all? We didn't gain any new information into Orochi's plans or secrets; all we did was see him blow up bridges. And the Scabbards' crying session would have still worked just as well.
He keeps rushing the pacing in certain spots (like 955, which is GOOD btw), then slams down on the brakes and starts going backwards for no reason. -
What do you guys think happened to the Sunny?

What do you guys think happened to the Sunny?
It's done, they need a new one, one where Jinbe can fit thru the doors.
Sure is no coincidence that Jinbe gets mentioned in the same chapter the Sunny gets destroyed.:ninja: -

It either got buried in rubble, the entrance is blocked off, or it directly got banged up a bit by the bombings. If Option 3 happened, that's fine, it's a very sturdy ship.
I definitely do not believe that there was some last minute save. Unlike with 900/901 where I was able to correctly guess that the Sun Pirates saved the day, I don't believe anyone happened to be there to save the Sunny in time.
-
Or it was a decoy.

This is how I feel about the Sunny. It's possible too if the klabautermann shows up and attempts to fix whatever damage was done, but it still feels too early for Sunny's to appear in the Manga.
With Jinbei popping up and saving the ship, the timing doesn't feel right so far if that happened. Somewhat feels like a Chekhov's Gun(?) can happen since Jinbei was mentioned, but I still don't feel it. For this specific event in particular I mean, since Jinbei is supposed to come back unless he died or has new plans.
We didn't see much after the blast, but Orochi didn't seem worried about the situation not going as he planned.
Besides, that scene was a flashback. Where Would Jinbei be now, had he protected the ship here? Granted we don't know where the Strawhats are right now either. It wouldn't be right to see them together right away. Jinbei could be chilling in some other part of Wano too, but again idk. -
I really enjoyed this chapter. The depiction of Orochi's mindset was very interesting and gave him some depth. It's always cool to see some Strawhat interactions too.
How many chapters for this flashback? I hope Oda takes all the time to write this one, even if it takes the length of a whole volume. Here's what we should expect:
- Oden being expelled from the capital;
- Oden becoming daimyo of Kuri and finding his nine retainers;
- Oden leaving Wano to join Whitebeard;
- Oden falling in love with Lady Toki;
- Oden learning about the connections of the Kouzuki clan with the history of the world, learning to write and read in the ancient language, learning about the Poneglyphs;
- Oden developing his dream to open the borders of Wano;
- Some insight into the "dawn of the world";
- Oden joining Roger to go to Laftel (arguably won't come up in the flashback);
- Oden's return to Wano, Kaidou's attack and his death;
- Why Nekomamushi and Inuarashi started fighting against each other.
That's just the big picture and I hope to see some other major events that we don't know about. Maybe Oda will break this flashback into different parts and switch between what's going on in the present and a little bit of the flashback… but I hope he makes it all just one big thing.
-
Hmm, pretty much an average chapter to me. I hope the next one will be more interesting.
-
Interesting that they seem to have firearms before Kaido had arrived.
-
I'm looking forward to this flashback, in part because of what's been previewed in the main story. We know a lot of Oden's story already, so I wonder what new twists can be revealed with this. We know Oden trains the scabbards, has a wife and child and fights and injures Kaido only to be executed. Where are the details inbetween that we don't know already?
I'm assuming Lady Toki will be a point of interest, seeing as we know little about her so far.
-
Can't wait to see Captain Awesome getting boiled. That will be part of the flashback, right?
-
Is it weird that Orochi is probably my favorite Wano character so far? Guy's just so slimey. I love it.
Given how long Oden's story is, I think we might get his flashback in pieces. First we'll get the story of how he gathered his followers, then later in the arc (probably right before the final battle) we'll see the events that led to his death for maximum emotional momentum, and some other parts interspersed between.
-
Having Jenbie re-introduce in this chapter, I guess he is the responsible of early transporting of samurai and the alliance. Oda please stop teasing us. Put us back to where the action is.

Oda strives to get to a cliffhanger every 17 pages, which sometimes means jumping ahead and then having to rewind the next chapter
It's not something he'd do as much if he was releasing 60 pages at a go once a month but… that's not the format.
Also, in some cases, its possible he does an event, then feels it needs more weight than it got so he adds in some extra the following week to make it stronger. Like when Pedro had a completely unsatisfying "death", he tried to put some pathos and emotional drama into it the next week... despite him and Carrot not having any sign of a bond prior to that.

Wadatsumi swapped it on the very last second.

We're about to start a big flashback, so you're gonna be waiting awhile I'm afraid

I like how it's still a "death" for you
-
I'm starting to get worried, I have faith in Oda but the fact that Kaido is pretty much invincible and that Orochi is dangerously wise to danger will reach the point of the Straw Hats running out of ways to win the day without any bullshit.

It ain't over till all the Big Mom stuff is over, and that may not be until Elbaf. We at the very least need to see what happened to Pekoms given his motivation and "the only way to bring him out of his rage" are tied to Pedro..
Also not dead- King Baum, Pekoms, Pound, Jinbe, Sanji's family, all the fishmmen with Jimbei, Monet and Vergo.
The only death since Whitebeard in modern day I'm convinced on is Yasuie… and Oda went heavily out of his way to have witnesses, show us the fatal blow on camera, the body afterward, and have grieving in the same chapter all after a long farewell speech and a big smiling death, all of which served an actual point to move the story forward. (And also had Law far, far from the scene.)
None of the others make any more impact on the story from being dead than they do for fainting for a few hours, so that's how Oda rolls.
-
I want to believe in Oda but I got to say Robby's got a point. Pell anyone?
-
That one monk in the last page, is he holding a gun/rifle?
-

Ur not wrong, Oda had already hinted this will be a large scale war comparable to marine Ford war
And we already have hints that the marines will probably make a move to wano also
-
That one monk in the last page, is he holding a gun/rifle?
Yeah. Real life Japanese warrior monks were known to be avid users of Tanegashimas.

Agree 1000% on this
also I know it's not a popular opinion but I still believe Abalsom is alive to

You don't have to try to convince me, just found it amusing the needle hasn't moved at all for you is all.

What hints? If anything, they've made it very clear they're not coming (as in, during this war at least), saying that they're not coming in at least three instances. (907, 956, 957)
-
Shishilian or Sicilian?
Also Neko and Jinbei being brought up around the same time leads me to believe that they will definitely be late to this chaos.
I would like an update on how Kid and Killer are unsuccessfully getting things done

Interesting chapter. Certainly was no expecting the Oden flashback so soon, feels like the current events aren't a relevant enough trigger for it. I'm sure the things we learn about Oden and Orochi's relationship will put this choice into perspective in hindsight. Given the hype, I'm expecting this to be a long flashback; at the very least to the end of volume 95 but realistically a few chapters longer.
Loved the samurai armour scene. Luffy and Brook in particular are looking great. The Jinbe acknowledgement is a good reaffirmation that he'll be around before Wano is over and done with. I expect he's in the brig on Big Mom's ship and will possibly need rescuing. It would be redundant for him to be used as a deus ex machina again like he was on Whole Cake Island. And speaking of redundant, I wonder what the payoff for the second Sunny destruction fakeout in as many years will be…
It's hard to say what to expect from the Oden flashback at this point. Either we're getting flashbacks within flashbacks or a second Wano flashback later on so we can get all that tantalising ancient history with Ryuma, the ponegylphs being crafted and the connections to Shandia I vaguely recall being hinted at as well as the more recent social and political history. Excited to see where it's all going as always!
-
Wadatsumi swapped it on the very last second.
Nice, thought the same.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Can't wait to see Captain Awesome getting boiled. That will be part of the flashback, right?
And seeing Oden-wankers butthurt.

XDrake telling Law who is the traitor in luffy's alliance makes sense, and law did something to save the alliance. And based on him arguing with shinobu, it would be irony if law finds out she is the traitor, after she accused him and his crew of betrayal. She is the one not part of the 9 scabbards that orochi said he has yet to see any of them, and her hitting that fat ninja in the balls that knew her, was likely to shut his mouth to not blow her cover in front of nami.
And she is now left alone with momonosuke, so she can bring him to kaidou/orochi, while she will tell kaidou about the 7 scababrds going to him so he can expect them.
-
How many chapters do you guys think the flashback will be?
My guess is 8-10 chapters, which would be the longest so far.
- Oden being expelled from the capital;
- Oden becoming daimyo of Kuri and finding his nine retainers;
- Oden leaving Wano to join Whitebeard;
- Oden falling in love with Lady Toki;
- Oden learning about the connections of the Kouzuki clan with the history of the world, learning to write and read in the ancient language, learning about the Poneglyphs;
- Oden developing his dream to open the borders of Wano;
- Some insight into the "dawn of the world";
- Oden joining Roger to go to Laftel (arguably won't come up in the flashback);
- Oden's return to Wano, Kaidou's attack and his death;
- Why Nekomamushi and Inuarashi started fighting against each other.
Probably also more insight on Ryuma and of course the theft of Shusui. I wonder if Toki actually met Ryuma personally on her travels.

Main problem with that, is said reveal will cause close to nothing of impact for us readers, given the traitor was a no one.
It has to be a someone. None less.

That is definitely not the popular opinion lol
-
I loved seeing Franky and Robin being total parents. That alone would make the chapter worth reading in my eyes.
-

Ohh my bad, for some reason I completely forgot that he died to Blackbeard. I was still thinking of the time he was on a ship and we hadn't seen him yet.
-
Its okay for Blackbeard to be the rule-breaker of the series.
But Shillew?, Better keep Absalom super dead. Or we'll be switching fruits all over the place, Knowing no one really dies getting theirs extracted.
-
Wow, people still thinking Absalom isn't dead.
-
Can someone explain me again what the benefit is of attacking Kaido etc. during the festival when all of his strong followers are in one place? Instead of, for example, ganging up on individual calamities when they are casually strolling around minding their everyday business, which they should have enough men for, then just have your A-list gang up on Kaido while the rest keeps the fodder busy?

They plan on attacking when they're drunk and vulnerable. The fire festival also coincides with the full moon, so Sulong is also a very handy option they can utilize when things inevitably turn into a full blown war.
Saying they'll just gang up on a random Calamity and take them out without alerting the other enemy forces (which includes other Calamities, one of which can fly) is incredibly unrealistic. And if the A-list is focusing on Kaido, then who's left to reliably take on the Calamities in the first place?

The problem with One Piece is that armies are usually presented as hopelessly underpowered compared to several super powered individuals who can single-handedly take on hundreds and thousands of fodder. Also, the stronger pirates are generally characterized as being immune to large alcohol consumption, especially Kaido himself (who one-shotted Luffy despite his state). Thus, it makes sense to gang up on those few strong individuals and severely weaken the enemy so you can immediately concentrate on the main target before he calls his weaker but still annoying reinforcements.

Kaido isn't immune though? He clearly gets drunk extremely easily. He's just that strong despite that, though I'm pretty sure Luffy killed his buzz when he kept attacking him. Though that is besides the point. In-universe, characters aren't going around thinking that they're too strong to be drunk, which again, isn't a good argument anyhow when Kaido is a huge drunkard. The point of the fire festival is to attack them when they're all least expecting it, them likely being drunk just helps with that.
Anyways, again, your alternative is flawed because there's no realistic way to single out a Calamity, much less kill one in a timely fashion, without other Beast Pirates/Orochi's forces knowing about it. Whether it's a Calamity or Kaido himself, they'll still get alerted. Instead of waiting for a minimum of 3 super convenient opportunities to arrive for each Calamity (This alternative also weirdly dismisses the Flying Six, Numbers, etc.), the fire festival gives them a unique opportunity to handle Kaido and the bulk of his forces in one go while they're vulnerable. Then factor in Sulong, and it's easy to see why they're putting all their eggs into this particular basket.

Absalom is the one weird case where he's maybe actually dead, but it literally doesn't matter because we might see the exact same guy with a slightly different personality running around later. Or his already psuedo-zombie status makes him an exception.
He's a weird outlier given his unique setup and the guy he works for. His devil fruit passing on says dead, but not happening on camera says "there is an out". Him being a rare character Oda gives no shits about means maybe he's dead, but the fact he was getting a background story gig as a news reporter, and that Perona wants to reunite with her crew means… something?
He's a Schrodinger's Cat.

Coming back as a zombie still means he's dead.
