Chapter 943: SMILE
-
I love that cover page. Every Robin cover page is always the height of aesthetic and comfiness.
Anyway I guess it's about time things start happening in this arc again. Just waiting for Big Mom to do something and hopefully Moria to show up.
-
OK, so I don't really believe Kawamatsu will be the last crewmate still, but god damn, he must be someone special if Oda is now outright refusing him to show him out of silhouette.
-
In the correct translation it does sound like Kaido is sort of impressed by how much of bastard Oro-dude is.
-
@S.C.:

He's literally doing the same thing with Denjiro and Oden lol
-
What a great chapter. Kaido and Orochi really are a bunch of bastard.
-
The secret is they all look like Zoro.
Secret prince part two - this time it's Japanese

Is Orochi above Spandam and Wapol in the Jerkass Ranking?
-
Is Orochi above Spandam and Wapol in the Jerkass Ranking?
Wapol is a friend compared to those two. Spandam never put a country in dystopia mode and took emotions away from citizens, but then again Orochi isn't able to nuke countries and doesn't have assassins at his disposal.
-
This little mini-arc about Yasu and his execution has easily been my favorite stretch of Wano. Really hope it can keep up the momentum because this stuff is great.
Not sure how next chapter will go though. Zoro and Sanji are obviously going to fight, but I'm not sure what Oda will do with the other Strawhats and I really hope they don't just sit on the sidelines and spectate.
-
Oh, Orochi is a top tier pos.
-
Is Orochi above Spandam and Wapol in the Jerkass Ranking?
I would say so. Wapol did screw over his country, but nowhere on the level of Orochi has, and Orochi's desire to murder Toko is even worse then Spandam beating Robin in scumbaginess, so yeah, I think he is just below Celestial Dragon level of evil.
-
Many years later we finally learn the truth behind the odd name "SMILE" given to the artificial devil fruits. And boy, is that easily the most fucked up thing that has ever happened in all One Piece.
-
The build-up towards the final page where Zoro and Sanji protect Toko is damn great. It made the reunion even better and more special.
-
No editor notes on the last pages in the official translation?
-
He's literally doing the same thing with Denjiro and Oden lol
And he did the same for Momonosuke back in Punk Hazard. If we waited 6 years to have Zoro and Sanji back together again, we can wait a few months for a design reveal
-

Doesn't he what?
He has at his complete disposal those ninjas we saw cornering Robin's clone, plus all the actual yakuza underlings, plus Kaido's henchmen. So yes, he is even stronger than Spandam in this aspect. The main difference between them is that one was working under the WG, therefore doing its businesses. The other is working for itself, so he doesn't need to justify with someone above him.Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk

Really drives home the fact that this whole Smile storyline has been going on for 7 years. Man, I think I'm gonna take a break from One Piece after Wano ends.
-
The hype ending panel could make this the twelfth and final chapter of volume 93 (especially possible because it has a four month gap after the last volume instead of the usual three) but the heavy exposition throughout leads me to think this is the start of volume 94.
The flashback at the start doesn't tell us much we don't already know, but the shot of the young Akazaya Nine is interesting. Kin has changed so much. I wonder what colour his hair used to be. And yeah, what is with the person in Kiku's position being a Izo lookalike? Izo didn't get an age laid out in his Vivre Card (not one that's been translated anyway) so it's hard to confirm or deconfirm if it could be him. The eyes look the wrong shape compared to Oda's previous art of young Izo, to my mind.
Orochi is being a right prick this week, a complete and utter bastard, and I love it. We all thought he would be a Spandam, and he kinda is, but he actually has some power of his own to back it up with. It does make you wonder what Oda's going to do to make Kaido feel like a genuine end boss though. I imagine he'll have to start that soon, if it's to work. (Or maybe Kaido won't have any more villain build-up than the hype of overwhelming physical strength he's already had, and he'll get his depth through a tragic backstory instead).
What I don't like is the Usopp/Nami/Franky group saying they "didn't make it in time." They were in Ebisu town when the execution was announced. Right outside the capital. Zoro beats them there despite starting in the next province over. It's a nitpick, sure, but I don't think it's unfair to pick nits in series that have become known for their attention to detail, you know? It's not a dealbreaker, but I'm not a huge fan of it.
Getting the full rundown on Smiles, however, was pretty great. So many little hints and details across so many chapters built up to this. It's a moment of narrative payoff that only a large-scale story with a talented author could stick the landing for. And god is it vindicating to look back to Zou, for example, and see the Pleasures, true to this explanation, keeping their grins all through the battle, even when getting hurt. Not a single mistake was made, but I don't remember anyone from the time picking it out as odd or making any theories off it. It was so subtle, but it was there all along. These are the kinds of moments that make the massive commitment I've made to One Piece feel worthwhile.
I'm certain I'm not the only one to think that Toko rubbing toad oil on Yasu's wounds could lead to another of Usopp's lies coming true. I hope that's not the case. That was a death to brutal and important to easily undo. The panel of him smiling, even in death, makes me feel positive he'll stay down though.
And then the cavalry arrives. There's a moment that'll be remembered until the end of the series. I can't wait to see Zoro and Sanji interacting again after all these years. They sound effects suggest this moment will have its own theme music and everything!

What about Denjiro? He isn't even introduced.
And OKiku is strange as well seeing like Izo is seem with the nine scabbards.

I meant good assassins, not fodder. Those ninjas were largely useless against Robin, CP9 had her shackled and walking the plank. Orochi's harmful to civilians, but kind of a pushover to strong people, which Wano has been lacking for a couple decades. Spandam can definitely do more damage with his backing. And at the end of the day, Orochi will be removed from power while Spandam is still in Cipher Pol. So while I think Orochi is a bigger jerk, Spandam is still a bigger threat.

It's the little details that makes me love One Piece. Great chapter. Oda again shows how to make villains you love to hate. I'm surprised Kin'emon and Kanjiro and the ninja were delinquents. And, now we can assume Oden was like a father to all of them. Makes his death even worse.

Wow, I forgot those two haven't met since…Dressrosa?

Its been six years since they were last on panel together.

Technically he commands the ninjas that Robin met. We dont know how powerful or effective they really are though. The way the story unfolded, they already failed twice.

I don't know about the entire ninja squad, but Fukurokuju has yet to have done anything, and was mentioned in the same breath as Hyou in his prime, so I'm expecting good things from him at least.

Hmm, I don't get a fatherly vibe from Oden at all.
I'm sure they look up at him more as like a revered, cool older brother or a guy worth following.
He was guy itching to travel the world and see it all. Not the characteristics of someone who is paternal(I know Edward is an exception).
It also just occurred to me that Vegapunk might have given Kuma the choice to turn into a Cyborg so he could create fruit users without having to steal their emotions.
Damn, the smiles fruit have actually had a significant impact on the overall story.
-
So, Zoro is both missing Shushui, and the medicinal treatment he received isn't probably that effective, if it was using toad oil. And Sanji has a tendency to be used as hype material.
I have a bad feeling about things.
-
As long no calamity shows up they 'should' be fine at this stage of the story, or so I hope. It's Zoro and Sanji who need hype tools or so I hope sigh
-
We all know this will lead to nothing. Toko is still with them after all, they will run at the first chance/deus ex.

I'm not expecting anything super huge coming from this, but if nothing happens, I'm going to be disappointed.

You know the thought of Zoro and Sanji vs X. Drake and Hawkings had me so pumped for the next chapter, you sir have deflated that excitement in a single post
-
Drake indirectly saved Law's life by being saved by the Marines. I wonder if Oda has that come back as poetic justice where Law saves Drake directly or indirectly
-
Maybe sanji and zoro should get beat up and captured so they can train next to luffy in prison, like advanced haki.

I'm sorry about that.

Chapter comparisons! Day late, but eh, I do what I can. Not very many notable differences this time. (And happy Memorial Day to my fellow 'Muricans!)
- In the scanlations, Yasuie notes that Oden picked up a "motley crew"/"odd characters". In the official translation, he says "Where do you find these people?"
Also, in Mangastream, Yasuie tells them to, with the extra money he's giving them, "spend it on yourselves. My treat", whereas in Jaimini's Box and VIZ, he just gives them extra money with a "take this as well!"
- When Hiyori is asking Zoro "If this is not hell, then what is?", she says "Zorojuro, please…", while in JB and VIZ, she says "Tell me, Zorojuro". Also, in JB Kanjuro is lamenting that they didn't notice what Yasuie was up to until he was crucified, while in MS and VIZ, he is upset at not having recognized him until then.
- Shinobu calls the SAD formula a "flawed drug" in MS, but slightly more specifically calls it an "incomplete formula" in JB and an "imperfect chemical mixture" in VIZ. Also, in the scanlations, she says "As if to sneer at/mock" the unlucky/unfortunate ones, Kaido/Doffy/Caesar named it SMILE; in the official version, she says "After seeing the particular misfortune", which suggests that the three of them didn't know that was going to happen until after people ate the fruits and discovered it, while the scanlations don't make it clear one way or the other whether they knew ahead of time or not.
- Usopp's thought about the toad oil after Toko brings it up is mostly incomplete in the scanlations, being like "That medicine's not…". In the official, he says "That's not what you think…"
- Zoro is referred to as "magistrate killer" in the scanlations, but "magistrate slasher" (as in, he didn't necessarily kill him) in the official version.

Well I think this might become true

The war is still on the horizon, probably the biggest reason why we will get no or little action in the next chapter.
-
It's impossible to save all the action for the end.
And whatever Oda has in store for Drake and Hawkins should start unfolding slowly. Some exchange just needs to happen.
Even so, it's as likely to be skipped over as anything else.
-
Oda's attention to detail about the smile fruits got me wondering about Momonosuke's devil fruit. It's not a man/beast fusion like the others.

It's not a Smile, but Vegapunk's "failed" creation.

I believe Vegapunk was able to make a flawless artificial df.

Vegapunk's "failed" creation.
According to 'Cesar'.

I believe Vegapunk was able to make a flawless artificial df.
It doesn't have swirls, which is unacceptable by Vegapunk standards.
-
How much you wanna bet next chapter is all about Luffy still in jail trying to escape? And then when we get back to Sanji and Zoro, their fight/escape with Toko would have happened off screen.
-
Fair enough
just thinking about 2 identical abilities existing at the same time is crazy enough, I guess he did that with the pacifistas and Kirzaru's df, I hope VP doesn't abuse that 'cloning/cultivation' method. DFs being unique and one of a kind is what made them special. I hope it is a very hard feat even for VP, we don't need spammed dfs.

LOL it would be too cruel even for Oda to skip that ZoroxSanji reunion.
-
The faces they are making to each other show me that there os going to be hilarious bickering next chapter. Don't know about fights being skipped but dialogue isn't
-
Law should be around somewhere too. I wonder if he will need to fight to free Bepo though. Thanks to Yasu they should free him now.

On that note, the sooner the jailbreak happens, the better. Udon's been the lowlight of the whole arc.
-

Always thought it could be something like that. He seems to be a perfectionist, so anything less than perfect result could make him see it as a failure.
-
What are everyone's thoughts about X Drake this arc? Do you guys think he's drowning with Kaido or is going to switch ships to SH ally by the end of the arc.
I initially was thinking that Luffy is going to have all of Supernovas under his wing but Drake is a wild card the more I think about him. I recently remembered that he was the one who trashed Otama's village. Luffy was told this directly by Hitetsu and he didn't really have a reaction to that information itself, but this is the village where Ace visited and befriended Otama. And we all saw how livid he got at when that scrub Holdem did whatever he did. I'm not really sure at what Luffy is going to feel, lol this is up in the air.
Thoughts?
