Awesome chapter. Law's tactical abilities are quite impressive.
And what's wrong with Trebol? Doffy receives a massive attack and he's like "your royality, don't let your knees touch the ground". wtf???
Doffy's knowledge about his DF is just amazing. It seems that only a "conquerer" can beat him.
Chapter 781: "Long-Cherished Desire"

-
So after thinking about the chapter, I came up with some theories about the immortality operation of Laws fruit, mainly about how it works, and ideas of how it might be used, or possibly has been used by Law already.
We know Law has the ability to remove the heart of a person when he touches a person to remove it. It's been the heart only we've seen, which makes sense with all the heart motifs from this arc. It's safe to assume that he can remove any and all organs as well. We've seen that despite the heart being removed, the person and organ still functions. Perhaps part of the immortality operation is removal of all organs. This allows the person to still be active, but if they get physically hurt in a certain area, the organ will not be hurt, and it won't be fatal due to the organ being okay. The trick would be that the organs would need to be kept safe and hidden, that way no one could come and just stab the heart to kill the person. Doflamingo would easily in his position be able to safely put the organs away.
The next part is a bit trickier, and it depends on if the translations are solid. Before, we thought it was Laws stamina that drained when using his power. This chapter, it was said to be his life force draining. Aohige's summary states that it's his actual life. I'm going to have to go with the idea that his actual life is drained, but if this is not the case, then the argument falls about, but I'll go with it just for argument and discussion sake.
So if Law is using up his life to make and keep his room opened up, perhaps the room is made up of his life energy. Keeping it open could allow some of his life to leak out, and using attacks could probably use up his life force. Even if not the case, his use of the room is connected to his life in some way. If we look back to Thriller Bark, we saw Kuma having the ability to remove someone's pain, and transfer it to someone else. If Kuma can remove a persons pain and transfer it to someone else, then Law, who is able to switch personalities and do all sorts of medical stuff, should be able to do something similar. Perhaps like a blood transfusion, Law can do a life transfusion, only Law can only take his life and give it to someone else.
If that is the case, then it's not really an immortality operation, but something that expands a persons lifespan, and by taking out their organs, death can't apply by many ways that it could happen. There are some other theories that could come from this, but I won't go into detail, mainly that it would be interesting that people think it is immortality that happens. My best guess is that either someone had the operation, and when they were shot in the head or heart, they were fine; or it is a cover up by some one in the WG for reasons we don't know. Either way, if there was some one (or some people), that have been around for 100's of years, they might have to have the operation every so often to stay alive. In some ways, it would be like a person giving up an organ that diminishes their life, and prolongs another persons life for so long.
With this theory in mind about the operation, I have two ideas about what could happen with Law using it. Luffy has a near gear that expends his life force quite a bit. From many battles, his life has diminished to the point where he will die very soon. Law, having been with him for a number of adventures, decides that Luffy is the one who should become Pirate King. He decided to give Luffy his life, so that he may continue to go on, and become the Pirate King.
The second theory is one I think could be more likely. In Impel Down, everyone was surprised that Luffy was able to hold up for so long, and thought he was dead. He got up, but was warned that his life span had significantly decreased. Perhaps it was much more than they thought. Luffy was down badly after Aces death, and was in very bad condition. There is a possibility that his organs were in bad shape. Law, while treating Luffy, saw he was in bad shape and noticed that he had very little time to live. Seeing something in him, he decides to give a significant amount of his life to him, even though he doesn't know why he's doing it. Luffy is alive because Law extended his life so he could fight on. Perhaps this could lead Law to a point where he's back to his childhood, where he only has three years to live.
So that's my theories, with much conjecture. While it relies on a number of speculations, I feel it's plausible enough. Let me know what you think.
-
Even though I had a good laugh when Law got manhandled by Doffy again, I have to say that that last, wordless scene carried some great weight. Oda ended the chapter on a fine note there.

I think I need a break in posting in chapter disucssion thread/reading it.
Lately because of amount of complaining It started to pull down my own experience in a way.
It never affected me till now but amount of people getting worked up over "issues" - that were always present in One Piece and in a way given it its character - is downgrading experience of reading climax of longest arc yet.I get that some people are tired of this arc but nitpicking on atomic level or endless continuation of recycling that "I cant cope with what I get because its easier this way" is shitty way to spend time in my opinion.
Not everybody who can formulate opinion should rant and fuel endless discussion over issues not adding ANY value to side of positives as more and more people started to do. I wont blame anybody for that but its evident(for me).Not every person that can write a line or two in english should go all out and criticize things they dont fully understand- some pretty new posters that seem to be also fresh to One Piece. If not understanding would not be case here then there would not be so many posts that are somehow explaining different angles and situations. Criticism done by people that dont even know how to do it or lack some qualities that actual critic needs is growing in internet like cancer in my opinion. Games, movies, tv series, mangas - every kind of entertainment is being torn to pieces, analyzed and criticized by more and more people. I never understood people that choose to spend their lives scratching on surface of actually great things, criticizing only bits that they understood. I get that everybody has right to have an opinion same as in some parts of world "everybody" can carry a gun but somehow they dont let just anybody carry it around. And criticism thanks to internet not being as restricted is possible for ANYBODY, sadly.
Its like everybody having internet connection post "opinions" and effect is that less creative person is, less he or she understands from what is given to us, easier for that person is to criticize, harder to emphatize and understand choices of an author. Its not about being blind to faults but about keeping balance, healthy balance.
I didnt seen any forum section in such condition since at least 2009 so that speaks for itself.
So I wont even try to "Enjoy" this or next weeks discussions here as I already know what to expect. I dont expect anybody to care about it but rather to think for themselves what suits them best and if its wrecking some great moments with concentrating on laments. -
Law has to poke the heart out first (like with Smoker) to switch it with something else. We've never been shown that Law can switch things that he can't see. And so looks like Law merely went for the move he thought would mean a quicker death for Doflamingo. If he poked the heart out instead of using gamma knife, Doffy might've quickly simply retrieved his heart. We've been shown that Vergo was fast enough to react to a heart swap, and given how quick Doffy reacts to things, we could easily assume he would quickly do something to retrieve his heart after having it poked out.
I am pretty sure he doesn't. He swtiched the Strawhats hearts without touching them and you can't retrieve your heart back without the help of Law

Urgh… Whenever there is something like "this will reduce x life span!" in a series it just feels really meh. What's the point? To make it more hardcore and show there is something at stake? It's stupid.

It's worse then stupid, it's utterly meaningless within the bounds of narrative, if we are really critising this particular part.

The whole concept about it is bad.
Don't know if it was some bad translating or not, but one way it was used during Impel Down was terribly bad: "You will get a 10 years short life span if I do this. If I don't do it you will totally die right now. Make your choice." Not an exact quote but that's how it went down. There is no point in making anyone's life span shorter. Oda keeps doing this to Luffy in particular, which I can only guess means he's going to pull another Roger at the end of the series.
The only point during One Piece I could consider the concept being used is by Brook, as a gag. It's just really meh. Stupid plot-power-super-serious thing.

Knowing you and what you hope from this arc, you personally should expect it to break the arc for you. Unless you just want the fight to be good, and not hoping that it will fix other problems from the arc, then there is a slight possibility it can make it.

Some times nitpicks are going to happen, and from what I can tell, for those tired of the arc are allowed to nitpick and it's okay for them to. The way I see it, it's like all of us are looking at a tapestry that has been mostly done (if we just consider this arc). Some people consider certain aspects to be quite off, and also see lots of minor details that they don't like. Others see minor details they don't like either, but it's not like it's one or two small things, but everywhere they look there is something that they can't stand. At first the nitpicks aren't a problem, but as they see more and more of them, it starts getting on their nerves, and they complain about it.
Now lets consider that this person has made many masterpieces before this one. They compare the current piece to others, wondering why it doesn't look nearly as good as the others. The person is trying something new, which causes problems because the person isn't skilled in certain aspects. Some may like the ideas and can look past some flaws, but others can't. Any one who looks at it, and compares it to the other favorites from before will have different opinions.
Here's the big kicker though about this arc. Everyone has aspects they like about it. There were elements they were looking forward to it, some which worked for certain people, others who disliked how things went. Either way, it's not that this arc is something that should never have been born, but more that for many, it was an arc that looked good at the beginning, and became worse as it went on.
As for the posters, I notice that many of them are quite new (I'm not even a year into being a part of this community). If they are anything like me, this could be the first forum they've ever posted in. It will take time for them to formulate better arguments about things. Also, many are just fatigued from the arc and constant breaks, and are looking forward to certain events that are to come. All this together will make for less than optimal discussions.

Nah, just hoping for fight to be good. It better bloody be. Arc has few saving graces for me now, and it would push it from "Fucking Terrible" to "Overall bad but with good moments".
Regarding fixing the problems of the arc: It is, at this point, impossible. Too much bullshit has pilled up already and there is no time to fix it.
Unless Oda will go like "Fooled you, this isn't final fight of this arc, fifty chapters more!". Which he won't do, because the arc is already too long.

Even though I'm on the side that likes the arc quite a bit, any problems can't be fixed at this point. Stretching out the arc longer would just frustrate everyone involved, which thankfully won't be happening.
I think at worst it will be a decent fight. If the fight is the right length (4-5 chapters), mostly focused on them with nice choreography, art, and some cool moves, we should be good.

The thought just hit me. Are they going to do an anime after one piece is finished that actually does service to the manga? I'd hope so, that'd be swell.

I don't know. It kind of grew on me. It's fiction you know? Can't expect it to be real. I understand some of it was stupid but try filtering it through the eyes of a 15 year old who hasn't consumed a massive amount of action stories like this. Then it becomes the coolest thing ever. With that black panel and "shambles" or "chambles" I got very excited.

Unfortunately, I was extremly cynical 15 year old…
Still, I can think of few things that I would consider pretty awesome, still.
-
@Doffy.:
Oh yea because somehow them being side or secondary characters seems to have escaped peoples mind .
And while secondary characters are not required to have personality or any kind of depth , Oda still gives them some personality and identity which is something i give a shit about not their fighting records and stuff .
What a snarky comment. You're a fun guy.
-
The hour thing is really weird since Oda is usually good at judging how long these things take. If it's an hour, I'd think it's for a good reason. There's no way we're going back to square one but rule of tension states the fight must go on till the absolute worst case scenario. I mean past time zero with Fujitora using a gravity ability to keep the strings at bay to buy Luffy the last few seconds to win sort of last minute victory.
Maybe the fight will involve a lot of Doffy running around and forcing Luffy to go through string traps to whittle him down or things of the sort. Or something to justify the time limit.

Well, there were action movies and anime (such as Dragonball, for example) when I was 15. I wouldn't really like Dofla's inactivity or Trebol's passiveness even then.
You know, Trebol. That guy that can shoot a moving fly right between the eyes. Who's so strong that he can pull a ship out of the water and flick it 100 meters away with one hand. Just make him stand on the side and comment, then get kicked aside by Luffy's half assed kick. Oda might just have made Luffy defeat Trebol while he's eating bento, same as Rebecca.

That was definitely the huge letdown of the chapter. the rest i was totally fine with but I share disappointment with Trebol's performance. I suspected that he was the most adapt fighter of the three top executives we were introduced to. I was hoping that he would use his logia in creative ways. He has the strength. Seems to me like Pica turned out to be the best fighter out of the three with Diamanté and Trebol far far below him in combative ability.

Guys, Trebol got punted when he wasn't looking. It could happen to anyone. Remember when Luffy rocketed Ace and Smoker at the same time? People can get caught off guard. Ask Doflamingo.

Yeah and neither of them were looking.
Trebol stupidly tried to run past an enemy in plain sight.

Nah man. No no no no. That's not how combat works. Trebol knew Luffy. He knew what Luffy does. They were in the middle of a fight.
-
But you know… an hour time limit makes me almost think that Luffy won't win this one.
-
Theory: Trebol is feigning worthlessness because he's part of CP0 assigned to watch Doflamingo. If he dies finally they don't care. His use to them has ended.
Quite an interesting idea, I forgot all about CP0. Where could they be during all of this? Interesting indeed.

theory about the guy who is coming to dofla/luffy fight (koala's scene), if it's not burgess, maybe it will be the white hunter ? He can go trought the birdcage, he's the one who know that something big is happening in dressrosa beacause he was in punk hazard. He can be the one who handle trebol while luffy takes care of dofla ?

I don't know. Seems to me that it's a lot easier to notice and react to a full grown man than to a fly buzzing around.
Anyway, him getting kicked isn't as much of an issue as him just standing next to Dofla and waiting for him and Law to deliver their lines before trying to do anything. It just breaks my immersion. You're gonna throw a ship at the same building your crewmate is in the second you realize you fell into a trap, but you're gonna just stand and comment while your captain is being stabbed in the chest?
Well, as long as the captain's knees don't touch the ground, everything should be fine.

Trebol stupidly tried to run past an enemy in plain sight.
Let's be noted that Trebol stupidly tried to run past an enemy in plain sight, and he is established to be among strongest ranged combatants in Doffy's crew, how little does that mean nonwithstanding.
He doesn't even have any established hand-to-hand attacks, dammit.
-
Nah man. No no no no. That's not how combat works. Trebol knew Luffy. He knew what Luffy does. They were in the middle of a fight.
How what works? His Lord and savior was getting a belly full of radiation. He was UNDERSTANDABLY distracted and wasn't thinking about anything else but getting to Doffy. There's nothing complicated about this.

It is a lot like Zoro watching some of Luffy's tougher fights though. Think about it, Trebol can't be swooping in to save Doffy. This is Doffy's fight and Trebol knows that. Sure, when things got really dire that's when he stepped in. But until then he was playing his part as a good subordinate. At least that's the way I'm looking at it right now.

This isn't Trebol's first rodeo and he's seen Luffy's speed first-hand. This isn't a simple mistake, it's completely retarded. In combat you don't pick and choose who gets to see what you're doing.

Not when your mind is somewhere else.
Anyway we have no time how long the countershock scene took. It was probably instantaneous. Even for a guy who could shoot snot at a fly. What if he hit Doffy? And Luffy would have fended off an attack like that anyway. And before the inevitable "WELL WE COULD SEE HIM TRY!!!" Oda doesn't have the time to show every goddamn thing, we saw him try to save Doffy and got punted. We got the information from that scene that he could not save Doffy in time because Luffy would stand in his way. We did not need anything else.

What? Who gets to see what? There's nothing weird about this. Quit forcing weird fight rule mechanics into this like it's a video game. Trebol got distracted by his captain's impending death, he rushed to save him without thinking, he got kicked because he was distracted. It's a completely natural development.

Weird video game mechanics? C'mon. Trebol knows Luffy is right next to him. Like others have state he could have went for a sniping move instead. My point is he couldn't possibly have expected to make it to Doffy when Luffy's beside him. Honestly, he should have been trying to fight Luffy. That's what I assume a good cremate would do in this scenario.

This is such a weird argument people are making. His long time leader is getting skewered and people expect Trebol to act rationally and concoct weird sniper maneuvers instead of doing the natural reaction of rushing to aid. Could he have reached Doffy in time had Luffy not been in the way? Yes, no? He is fast, you saw how quickly he caught Robin's clone. It doesn't matter, he wasn't thinking rationally, he simply reacted instinctively and lost sight of everything else. It's a perfectly natural response. I know the characters in One Piece look kooky but Oda DOES try to write them to act like people.
@G8trH8tr:Honestly, he should have been trying to fight Luffy. That's what I assume a good cremate would do in this scenario.
You expect a good crew mate would just focus on his opponent instead of rushing to save his captain who is getting chemotherapied in the gut? Okay…

This situation has nothing in common with Marco and Jozo in the war. We have a 2 on 2 encounter. It would make sense for Trebol to take on Luffy and trust in Doffy that he can handle Law.

If not understanding would not lbe case here then there would not be so many posts that are somehow explaining different angles and situations.
I dont expect anybody to care about it but rather to think for themselves what suits them best and if its wrecking some great moments with concentrating on laments.thanks a ton man.. I wanted to say these stuff for weeks now but I was never able to.. I seriously appreaciate this.

You must think that Marco and Joz are really bad crewmates.
You mean, with how they constantly intercept Admiral level fighters?
How do you even make that comparison, when taking enemies that threatens their captain is what the two do all of the freaking time?
-
Doffy totally had this.

A) Radio, not chemo.
B) And what exactly was he going to do? He is a ranged fighter.
