Great work, thanks…once again it's confirmed that Oda totally sucks at predicting how long it'll last...anyway, very interesting
Don't delete the pages! It should be moved to another thread if it really has to go, but don't delete it!
That too, but they really have to go.
Funny how some words of gOda spawn so much bile and hate beneath his followers within a few pages. Great analogy to religion. Attacking other authors/followers included.
Aside from that, interesting read, thanks sandman.
it's AMAZING that there are bad comics and good comics and people say that the bad ones are bad and that the good ones are good, and somehow this has something to do with one piece specifically and something something religion go back to Narutofan.
The idea seems good at first just like many other mangas but it then turns into a BS friendship win every one time only power up series and forced fanservice every single chapter(some being purelly fanservice) and by fanservice I don't mean cool scenes from characters I mean female characters getting their clothes ripped for no reason and thas why people like Fairy Tail.
Basicly if One Piece was Fairy Tail Luffy wouldn't have lost one figth yet, he would have beaten Akainu, BB and everything else with Friendship power ups, like the main character figths super hyped characters that the author estabilishes it would be nearly impossible for him to beat but them he pulls of nonsense power ups everytime(atleast till I stopped reading) making every battle cheap, because its mostly BS battles or who can rip each other clothes more battles(when its girls).
I mean Toriko isn't as great as I though it would be be, it goes from having a good arc to a bad arc pretty consistently(imo) latelly but its pretty dumb saying its worse than Fairy Tail, I guess Toriko doesn't have enouh girl and naked ones mostly, damn the anime Toriko did the right thing adding that useless journalist girl.
Then what the fuck is good about it? you just told me with your post that everything we are saying is true…you only forgot that its a guild of a shitload of people but they only care about 4 or 5 but yeah if you recognise all those fucking flaws how can you say its not "that bad"?
There is no bandwagon, the only bandwagon around is the bandwagon of fappers that read it just because of the boobs because if someone notices everything you said they would stop reading it.
I remember us having a checklist back in the Fairy Tail thread(like I said I haven't read it for more than a year so I dont follow the thread anymore) with a bunch of repetitive shit that happens every arc and we would check the checkboxes when it happened and the list would be almost full(or full) every fucking arc, aka the same repetitive, bullshit happened every arc.
there is nothing wrong with toriko, the amount of foreshadowing it has is amazing, and the sheer amount of mistery is awesome, the concept of gourmet cells is getting more and and more development and the fights are top notch, something crap like fairy tail could not do in 5000 chapters. and nothing have much women doesnt make the story any worser atleast the womens in toriko are all usefull
and nothing have much women doesnt make the story any worser atleast the womens in toriko are all usefull
*not *having *many *doesn't *worse *; *at least *women *useful *.
Sorry I left this topic a while ago but couldn't help myself :P
Don't worry, Mangapanda can screw up more than 10 things at once :)

I was being sarcastic about the woman in Toriko did I really need to explain you that? and no there are flaws with Toriko.

Hey, take that Narutofan back. No need to get personal
Sure you can debate like this. The question is how and when you do it. I was just a little surprised and embarrassed to read this derailing discussion on this particular thread. It kind of disparaged the intention of the threadstarter.
Thanks so much, Sandman!!! You're the best!!!
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing Sandman!
There's some really great storytelling mentalities to me. Like the protagonist not being too strong or not reviving characters. "Jesus" as a protagonist is definitely boring and I've always appriciated that despite there being fake-outs (Alabasta, Skypiea, Enies Lobby, Punk hazard, with Punk Hazard being the most bareable one because it was foreshadowed) it's always survival and not once revival. I dislike these two things, too, especially if they're overly used.
Sandman got the Blue Stars? That's amazing, I'm seriously happy for ya, cheers!
I have a policy that says that whoever screams wins.
Yahhh!!!
Congrats on the stars, sandman! It's about goddamn time
Finally sandman has his blue superstars.
Well deserved <3
Well done, Sandman
Thanks!
thanks for this thread
its very informative

There is information about things in Oda's workplace, maybe that should be added to the first post?
Thank you everybody for encouraging me!

Thank you for the info, Snir. I've just updated the first post (link to the One Piece Podcast) with the interview below.
Interview with Oda in SJ Alpha March 19 issue (2012)
Thanks to shadyagent for his help.
Q: The world of ONE PIECE has many different kinds of pirates with unique styles. How and when did you first think of the idea to write a manga about pirates?
Oda: Ever since I was little, I liked pirates. As a child I really liked an anime series called Vicke the Little Viking. It was about a little kid who admires Vikings, and his dream is to become one of them when he grows up. As I did research on pirates for ONE PIECE, I realized that Vikings are a type of pirate. I feel that it's awesome to have friends on your team, just like in the Vicke series. It may not be the best comparison, but I feel like that series' spirit is carried on within my work.
Q: If you could join any pirate crew in ONE PIECE (except for the Straw Hats), which one would you join and why?
Oda: Hmm. Except the Straw Hats… I think it would be awesome to be in Buggy's crew. They seem to be very carefree, and it would be really fun because even the subordinates can make fun of the captain. But if I was really strong, I would want to be in the Blackbeard Pirates.
Q: Your manga is famous for not only its incredible action, but its heartfelt moments as well (we've certainly cried some “manly tears” around the office). What is your secret for eliciting such powerful emotional responses from people?
Oda: The thing is, I get bored easily. So if my manga was just about the action, or comedy, or tearjerking moments, more than anybody, I would get bored. So I change up the style of the series to keep up my motivation to draw the series. The real secret? I think of the plots and scenes when I'm tired. The only way that I can think of a new idea is to think about it a lot without sleeping or eating. That's the only way that I know, because humans can only come up with truly new ideas when they reach their limit. So every time I am done with my manuscript, I am completely exhausted.
Q: It's no secret your manga sells like gangbusters and has even set records in Japan. Yet your manga hasn't strayed far from its roots. It's still as pure and honest as it was in the beginning. What is your secret for dealing with success
Oda: To this day, I've never truly felt pressure about becoming successful. I always try to stay focused on making manga for just a single audience, because in most circumstances, you read manga by yourself. So whenever I draw manga, I have only one reader in my mind myself as a 15-year-old. I have no idea how other people would feel, so I turn back to the 15-year-old me to make a judgment on what is awesome or not. I always try to stay true to myself, and somehow it resonates with the kids who read my manga.
Oda: I only have the ending of ONE PIECE in my mind, and nothing else. But knowing the end point, I weave the story and make story arcs that build up to it.
Q: ONE PIECE has beautiful color spreads. What is your process when making them, and how long does it take?
Oda: I've drawn a lot of color illustrations. Recently, it takes me more time to think about what to draw than to actually draw it. But if it's an incomplete idea, I would get bored while drawing. So until I find something that I really want to draw, I just think, sometimes the entire day. I feel like now it's harder to choose what to draw than when I started serializing ONE PIECE.
Oda: I listen to music a lot when I am making manga. I enjoy every genre of music, whether it's Japanese or foreign. I create a playlist that is a soundtrack to a new story arc, and listen to it over and over again when I am working.
Q: Digital manga, like Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha, is starting to take off in America. What are your thoughts on digital manga?
Oda: I think digital is cool for manga as long as it doesn't interfere with the way it's intended to be enjoyed by the readers because the flow of panels and the use of spread images in ONE PIECE is unique compared to traditional manga. Otherwise, I've always imagined that the experience of reading digital manga is similar to reading books in print, and neither is better or worse.
Q: Do you have any last comments for the U.S. fans that enjoy this series via SJ Alpha?
Oda: When you are reading ONE PIECE, you might come across weird scenes that only Japanese readers can understand. But please bear with me, because I am trying to create a world that can be enjoyed by people everywhere.
US Shonen Jump August issue (2007)
SJ: Who would you want for a brother or sister?
Oda: Usopp might be the most fun to hang around with. I think we'd get along.
Oh… So that was what he meant when he said his target audience is 15 yr old boys. It totally makes sense now.
Thank you for your hard work Sandman.

Lot of quotable stuff here for many uses but I want to stay on that….
Thanks again Sandman
no problem, glad I could help
Thanks for the extra info Sandman!
@Oda:
I think of the plots and scenes when I'm tired. The only way that I can think of a new idea is to think about it a lot without sleeping or eating.
That could explain why sometimes Oda appears to favor emotion & empathy over logic.
Oda: I listen to music a lot when I am making manga. I enjoy every genre of music, whether it's Japanese or foreign. I create a playlist that is a soundtrack to a new story arc, and listen to it over and over again when I am working.
I'd pay to have those playlist since I have mine for every arc too.
thanks sandman for this amazing thread.. what i really like are those oda breaks stats.. :p
thanks for this, was insightful
I'd pay to have those playlist since I have mine for every arc too.
Ooh, Oda's official One Piece soundtrack would be interesting as hell. It would really help peek into Oda's mind, and also significantly boost the careers of whoever he mentions lol.
The interview between Oda and Kisimoto will be revealed in the new Naruto book called "Michi" (it means way/road).
I'm looking forward to it.
! By the way, in the latest interview of Kishimoto in "da Vinci", he said, "I tried to defeat ONE PIECE, but it was an extremely strong opponent. All mangakas should try to defeat it."

Hunter X Hunter could've really given it a run for it's money if Togashi ever got his shit together. :getlost:

Suck it, Naruto fans.
Suck it, Naruto fans.
Why?..I am a Naruto fan but i never thought it as good as One Piece.
Not every football fan is 'fan' of Messi(though everyone enjoy his play i guess);other players have their fanbase too.You need not to be fan of the best thing around.
Though, again,i never considered OP to be best manga around(definitely best shounen, but not manga).
Suck it, Naruto fans.
Despite all the pairings, the deeper character backgrounds and so much powers that Naruto has what One Piece don't always have, One Piece wins. Also I never see a One Piece-Naruto war here, why tell Naruto fans to suck it?

One Piece for Pirate King!
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
One thing that upsets me is that One Piece could have been so much more.
Oda could have made it more brilliant than it already would be but he has to restrain himself as he just wants to retire.
I really like how Oda cares about his fans. He could just scrap it all and live with his fortune.
I can imagine Oda crying when he writes the final chapter. Well he cries whenever he writes a sad moment in a chapter.

Could you elaborate on how it could be more ? So far I've agreed with every move Oda has made up till now.
Could you elaborate on how it could be more ? So far I've agreed with every move Oda has made up till now.
Oh OK.
Well there's nothing wrong with the current story because it flows very well. Oda said that if he wanted to write everything in his mind for marineford, it would be 50 pages each chapter. I wonder what was going on in his mind.
Oda also said it would take 20 years to finish OP but he says there's 10 more years until the end.
I just think of what more we could have gotten. One Piece will no doubt be amazing once finished, but what other things could have occurred or been detailed.
I don't blame him at all. He is basically working everyday doing something he loves and hates (loves drawing, hates making story). He gets mminimal sleep and doesn't get as much family time. Cruel world this is, life's short.
Oda hates making the story?
Oda could have made it more brilliant than it already would be but he has to restrain himself as he just wants to retire.
There's a difference between wanting to retire and being limited by human constraints.
Oda hates making the story?
No he does not. If he had hated it he could had just end this series already but he does not
@joekido:

I just re-worded it.
Oda said himself, and is in this interview thread. He finds it painful to right the story but on the other hand he enjoys drawing.

I would think that that would be a reason to retire.
But yes, if it wasn't for human constraints he could be quite happy to do it.
Edit:
"I just can’t help but draw a lot. The weekly format is set at 19 pages, but from the creator perspective I want to move the story along faster. I end up jamming as much as I can in there. There is also wanting to finish faster so I can relax."

Hate, not so much, but painful would be correct diction
"It is painful to write a story. On the other hand, I enjoy drawing."
Although it could also be in reference to Odas emotions being in pain when writing, such as;
Oda often cries while he is writing ONE PIECE.
The most heartbreaking scene for him is this one.!
"the last villain will have a eyepatch" LOL so much Blackbeard guys!
He has a growing family.
He has friends.
He has responsibilities for multiple One Piece projects that include designs and storyline checks.
He likes watching movies and television dramas.
He likes video games.
He likes to travel. And oh yeah, he manages to assemble 15ish-19ish pages each week of the fastest and highest-selling manga of all time.
Every. Week.
He has no interest in doing a half-assed job to rush through to retirement. As his family grows, he has less time to do the necessary work and that's very clear but he has no interest in rushing the series 'just to get it done'.
When he outlined his daily routine and the hours of sleep he gets, that wasn't even a bit of an exaggeration.
That is correct. Oda mentioned that he doesn't take shortcuts as it would ruin the series.
There are other priorities in life that he must tend to. Because of this Odas restrains from writing ALL that he desires as per interview.
Marineford wasn't a half assed arc and neither did it seem like it. However Oda did mention there could have been more to it. It doesn't necessarily mean he's doing a half assed job.

Where was this said? I only read that a guy with an eye patch will appear later in the story but nothing about the last villain.
Where was this said? I only read that a guy with an eye patch will appear later in the story but nothing about the last villain.
here well mines more specific… I just guess it's a villain! "In the final scenes of ONE PIECE, there will be a pirate who appears with an eye patch"
and i like these comments as well! like luffy's mom i would love to see her !!!
Luffy's mom:
Oda: I think she's alive. I'm still thinking hard about this. [Laughs] But if she does appear in the story, then she'll be a very tough-looking woman. And strict. There's no way that she's a beautiful mother. She's got this typical middle-aged woman's permed hair. Speaking about families, I did a backstory for Nico Robin and her family. That was actually the first time for me to draw a mother in a character's memory. Up until that point, I'd never drawn a blood relation. In Chopper's case, he's called a son even though he's not blood-related. So I've put in a message there saying that you can still call someone who's not related by blood your family. American Shonen Jump (December 2009 )
ending:
"The whole world will be thrown into turmoil in the final arc." Asahi Evening Newspaper (26 November 1999)
the ending:
Hahaha, no no, I won’t be pulling off some kind of Wizard of Oz thing like that. After having gone through an adventure like that, it wouldn’t be fair to not actually give them a reward.

Funny that he mentions Wizard of Oz. I was just reading about the Emerald City theory.
