I don't know if this is breaking the fourth wall too much, but I have to wonder if after Oda's eye surgery finishes he gets back to work, only to realize that after decades of drawing manga that his art style looks weird. He then spends the next few days walking up to people and asking why is looks so weird, and if it's really looked this weird for 20 years. Like, he meant to draw it normally all along, but he just couldn't see it until the surgery.

@onemoment Considering how Gear 5 is a love letter to Tex Avery and Looney Toons, I am sure he is quire aware of his style. XD
-
Didn’t someone consider the possibility that Big Mom had homies all over the world to look and reports things to her? Is this still a possibility?

Would Mihawk be willing to make Wano his new home base? He has shown interest with swordsmen and info is hard to travel out of Wano to begin with. It seems to be treated as one if the hardest places for the Marines to get to too, so if anything he’d prob be more willing to deal with the scant number of Marine ships able to make it there than dealing with them everyday at his gloomy castle.
-
I still find it weird that, apparently, he hasn’t shown interest in challenging Oden (we know from Vivre Card that Mihawk became the greatest swordsman in those years, so..)
-
@crlsdc Mihawk is only 4 years older than Shanks (43 vs 39). He would be in his early teens during Oden's time.
Edit: Scratch that, he'd be 19 when Roger died, and 23 when Oden died. However, it should be noted that Mihawk would become Shanks' rival only many years later, so I guess he was still climbing the ladder during Oden's time.

I'm sure Mihawk tried multiple times to challenge Roger and Oden back in his youth, but only got as far as challenging Shanks, which is prob how they first met.
Come to think of it, Mihawk prob didn't try challenging Whitebeard either back in those days when Oden was with him, since he apparently never met Vista until Marineford.
-
I have the feeling that Mihawk’s title comes from one specific incident, something so amazing that he started being called the Greatest Swordsman, like cutting in half a whole mountain or island.
It does not come necessarily from challenging every other swordsman in the world. That’s my theory at least.
He has accepted duels whenever he felt like it, but it would make more sense to have gotten his title from a single amazing sword feat. -
Maybe he killed an Admiral who also was a swordsman?

Anime use to be like 35-37 chapters behind. It's been 40 or more for a while. This gives Toei room to cover more pages. Especially with these next few episodes.
About 18 or so chapters from Egghead. Even if Toei takes 6-7 weeks off with recap or no episodes, they can hit Egghead b4 the year ends.
-
I doubt that, I think we are in for some solid conclusion for Zoro in Wano, like visiting his great-great uncles grave and whatnot.
There could be more lead up to what Shanks is doing, the ships of the Government and of course Greenbull being there. Maybe another Uta flashback to get more Red only people into the anime.
Egghead might start around January or February not earlier, who knows maybe we get another solid filler arc. -
Filler arcs are shorter than they used to be. Averaging around 3 episodes post timeskip. For example, about 24 weeks until Dec 17 which around the time, Toei takes off. Chapter 1040 which is covered this week and is 18 chapters away from 1058 (beginning of Egghead - bounties, Cross Guild, crew antics, Rev Army). Last 5 episodes have averaged about 16 pages and it can go back to 12-14 pages at some point.
They can have a filler arc, take a 1 week break, and slow down the pace of pages adapted, still cover 1058.

Oda already showed MADS in the Germa cover story after Queen mentioned MADS, so it might just be one of many things Oda could have touched in the Wano arc, but decided not to actually touch on it until after the arc finished.
-
Just had this realization: that I think we're going to be learning more about specifically the three races Big Mom mentioned were missing from Whole Cake, which are Giants, Lunarians, and the third one.
Egghead already established solid motivation to go to Elbaf, because of Saul and the Ohara books, and Lunarian history beyond what Queen said was never elaborated on, and are still relevant going by what are happening with the Seraphim. So if that's the case, then we might be learning more about what that third race was soon enough.

I’m here at San Diego Comicon and it’s nice to see Sanji so present with Luffy and Zoro! And Law and Kidd. I suppose.
Wings of the Pirate King figures displayed and advertised prominently along with cool life size statues of Shanks and Luffy. It’s all in celebration of Gear 5 or Netflix or something right? What ever it is, I like all this One Piece stuff they’ve got going on.

@electricmastro what about the three-eyed tribe? We haven't really seen one except Pudding who's only half-breed

As long as Pudding has three eyes and can awaken the third eye, then it prob doesn't make much difference to her.

@electricmastro I would guess it's whatever Kuma is supposed to be? I have to admit, I am curious what Vegapunk means that he is "unique".
I mean, besides being over 20 feet tall.

One translation I saw had it as "special people", as if to say he was part of an elite group of people, but I'll have to see more to understand what was meant by that.
There are also Onis of course, but maybe that could be lumped in with giants.

I get the feeling people won't take Luffy's enemies were seriously anymore until they show themselves to be like Rocks. Rocks was above Kaido and Roger's greatest rival, so people will just assume Luffy won't have a hard time again until then.

Who thinks Borsalino and Saturn aren't serious threats to Luffy? Well, i think such people just lack basic reading comprehension. Best to just ignore them.
-
I would like to see an enemy that is not stronger than Luffy but uses tricks and traps. We just missed a chance of that happening with York, which is sad. But even Cesar was an interesting villain, even being clearly weaker than Luffy from the start. The way he used his fruit and weapons gave the heroes a lot of trouble, and his personality was very entertaining.
A good villain will be interesting, not necessarily invincible-looking -

Ones who keep in mind what Luffy did to that Emperor, which Kizaru and Saturn aren’t.
-
@electricmastro I've not seen people saying that because Luffy beat Kaido, Borsalino and Saturn aren't a threat... Well, they are just wrong. They'll see soon enough. Borsalino is an admiral- the ultimate marine weapon in one piece, and Saturn is one of the 5 top men of the king of the world! That should tell you everything you need to know on the threat they posses.
I can understand having doubts on Saturn since we haven't really seen him in action, but Borsalino? He's a cerified powerhouse! The light-man!

Just read 332-333. Man, Usopp was giving Nika Man the business. Chopper still left the bandages and care supplies behind because Sanji was right to not treat him. Robin missed the whole thing. A lot of different emotions.
-
@Cockycent
I really love Usopp vs Luffy. It was such well built conflict, things escalated naturally but drastically. It felt like a fight between good friends, with high stakes. Relatable and worrying. -

Watching the LA made me realize it would be pretty cool if the Lord of the Coast was actually tamed by Shanks and 12 years later is some gigantic sea king that follows the RHP.
-
Kuina really had it all wrong. Wonder who poisoned her mind like that.
She never heard of Big Mom or Devon or Tsuru or any other female pirate/marine?
All she had to do is eat a devil fruit or get her hands on a devil fruit weapon (sword).
-
@access-timeco It was still terrorizing the coast and got beaten by Luffy at the start of his journey in the manga.
-
With BM out of the picture, this would be a great opportunity for all of the kids fathers to try and reach out. If Pound could try while BM was around. They have no excuse
-
I just had a thought that the reason Oda had Green Bull beat and drain King and Queen was so that he could make a necessary escape from Wano or subjugation believable.

Or maybe it’s just to emphasize how they’re dried up losers. Hahahah.

Just watched a bit of reverse mountain and it´s hilarious to see that Luffy challenges LaBoum to a rematch, which is nowadays an actually easy win for Luffy^^
-
Next time, they work together. He sees her potential.
Most were caught up in the moment, but not Zoro and Lucci. They were fixated on cutting something up. 2 degenerates lmao

What if Sabo got his memories back when he saw the news of Ace being defeated and captured/when Luffy and crew declared on the WG?
What if he was involved in the Marineford arc? What are the chances of Ace still being alive? Need this asked on a SBS or at least Oda addressing the timing of Sabo’s memories coming back and the trigger.
Just happened to catch the ep where Sabo reveals himself to Luffy during Dressrosa and the ep where Akainu kills him (which plays back pretty dumb now).
-
@Zik Oda did draw a few pages of a "what if" in which Sabo goes to Marineford. He manages to save Ace from Akainu's attack, and, though Whitebeard still dies, the brothers later renew their bond by drinking sake together.
-
Pressure and temperature possibly being a deterrent to the 2 base Haki. Requires focus for CoO because awareness, but what if its too hot or cold to focus? Sea Kings can take the pressure of the deep ocean, so they are naturally tough. Like having sea stone cuffs, could pressure be applied to train a DF user??
-
@Cockycent Considering Oda is a big fan of DragonBall, I'd say yes, gravity training works in OP world.
-
Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. Is there a chance that Zoro's full name is "Pinzoro" and not "Zoro"? As in Zoro is short for Pinzoro since he was named after his grandfather.
-
@Cockycent
Definitely possible, but it could also be a case of a similar family name, like Usopp and Yasopp. It looks like his grandfather’s name, but it’s not the same. -
I've seen talks about what is more iconic between Kamehameha, Rasengan, and different things from OP etc. A lot of OP stuff don't travel or connect as much with the "West" for some reason. I've seen the ups and downs with Toonami as well as newer anime coming along and connecting easier.
If there is anything that travels from OP, to me, it isn't an attack. It is the Strawhat. Luffy stretching isn't always known, but that hat is everywhere and more recognizable. Even if 1 isn't into anime in general, they've heard of Kamehameha.
Even other mangaka use the hat as easter eggs. The logo with the hat is everywhere. I wonder if that was Oda's idea or an editor. Good job to whoever. It is so simple.

Recently wondered how the frequency of color spreads has progressed over time, with some - to me at least- surprising results:
Chapter 1- Chapter 100 8
101-200 13
201-300 13
301-400 16
401-500 16
501-600 17
601-700 17
701-800 18
801-900 20
901-1000 22
1001-1100 23
1101-1121 6I figured that 8 would not end up the highest number when I counted, but I thought we would have peaked at some point. With Oda taking more breaks and chapters getting shorter, I'd have assumed he'd consider them expendable, but guess he likes drawing them.
-
Interesting results. I wonder if it's a Jump thing though. Like, Shueisha wants every ongoing series to get colour pages and the cover with a certain degree of regularity (relative to their popularity) for marketing purposes, and that frequency is independent of the number of chapters actually published. So if One Piece needs 8 colour spreads a year but it now takes 3 years instead of 2 to publish 100 chapters, the number of spreads seems to go up.
-
@Captain-M
Counted by year, and it looks like you could be right:1997* 2
1998 3
1999 6
2000 7
2001 5
2002 5
2003 7
2004 4
2005 11
2006 8
2007 7
2008 6
2009 7
2010 6
2011 7
2012 8
2013 7
2014 7
2015 7
2016 10
2017 7
2018 7
2019 7
2020 8
2021 7
2022 9
2023 9
2024* 5Slight uptick in 22-23, we'll see what happens this year. I'll say though, that'd be kinda sad to me, if Jump (still) decides how many color spreads Oda needs to do.
-
@cavendishsama I've got no doubt Oda could put his foot down about anything he truly didn't like.
Man, what the heck happened in 2005 though?
-
@Captain-M The wiki says that in 2005 the manga was at Water 7 and then Ennies Lobby, and it was also when the Baron Omatsuri movie came out.
Iirc, Water 7 and Ennies Lobby was one of the peaks of popularity of One Piece so maybe there was a bigger push in the magazine and they asked for more spreads.
Plus, in 2004 Oda only made 4 colour spreads which is a very low number, maybe he was trying to compensate. At first I was also going to factor in the movie but by then OP had yearly movies, so I don't think it made a difference.
-
@FolhaS Interesting. I would have thought Marineford and Strong World would be the place for that kind of push.
But yeah, maybe it was making up for the four in the past year. Or maybe the other ongoing series of the time were struggling to fill their colour page commitments so the ones who could had to step up. Or an editorial change. Or who knows what else.
