I don't get the disappointment about Doflamingo's backstory. Aside from how he cares about his crew, he's already well past the point of being redeemable in my eyes. Him being another sympathetic character would've been a little cliche imo. The point is that he's a smug, entitled asshole, throwing a temper tantrum because he hasn't been afforded the gratuitous benefits that his Celestial Dragon status grants him. It's supposed to be a little petty.
Chapter 760: The Same Stakes
-
-
It fits for a douche celestial dragon to think that was a crappy life. And there will be much more on his backstory once laws flashback starts.
-
@MDL:
Koala X Sabo <3
Also, I'm the camp that loves this backstory for Doflamingo.
It really is the better of the two possible clichés. So much better.problem is,with how much dofla's past was hyped,a "clichè" is not enough
-
Why did people expect Doflamingo to be against the principles of the World Nobles? He's not been afraid to use that title to his advantage and if you look back to the flashback of him taking over Dressrosa Doflamingo was acting incredibly entitled.
-
Roswald? didnt he travel with his "Collection" of pirate captains with him, and when one of them tried to escape he detonated his collar?
I could have sworn that Mjosgard's father (seen in chapter 625) actually was a decent guy. However, reading it again, I guess I was just wrong there.
-
It's not. There's more to see obviously. Maybe even more of his childhood. Whenever characters are shaded in flashback, they tend to appear in full detail later on.
I can't remember if there were other instances of something like this, but this could have been just a short summary which will be expanded upon later. Sort of like a quick flashback preview.I mean in terms of comparing it to Sabo flashback being well put together .
It's only 2 pages so far so it to early to say how well put together it is.I forgot the it in the sentence so what i saying saying came out wrong lol.
-
problem is,with how much dofla's past was hyped,a "clichè" is not enough
Why do you think this is all we're getting? You think this is all we're gonna see of Doflamingo's father and mother? That we aren't going to see what happened in a full fledged flashback that will surely make it better? Does any thing that happened after this not matter? Do we even have the specifics?
-
At least Sabo's story was well put together and wasnt rushed out of the door.
So Doflamingo couldn't weave his story together. Maybe his puppet show of a back story was bad. Or maybe we just haven't seen all the various strings of his back story that make the ball that is Doflamingo. There might be various threads of story that will show more about him. Maybe there were some strings attached to the events that happened in his childhood. Maybe Doflamingo was just a puppet for the other CD's, and once the string they had on him broke, he just wanted everyone to dance as his puppets. I'm out of string jokes at the moment.
-
DoFlamingo, the renegated noble, who disgusted by the elitism and cruelty of the World Nobles…
... Goes to a peaceful island to usurp the throne and murder, torture, mutilate and enslave commoners.
Yep, sorry, but that just doesn't add up. I'm really happy about the absence of some bullshit sad past. He is a creepy hedonistic sadist because he was raised as a creepy hedonistic sadist and likes being a creepy hedonistic sadist. A Tenryuubito who just happens be strong.
DoFlamingo's Leather Pants just got confiscated.
-
Anyone else annoyed by how selectively Oda makes Luffy "dumb" against Doflamingo. I mean, Dofla's kick was a straight on attack, he somehow still got Luffy, wrapped him up, and cut him with Bellamy.
-
Hum I wonder if Corazon decided to become a doctor after his mother's death. Just like Usopp decided to bang a future doctor.
-

that has nothing to do with luffy being dumb.
luffy tried to block that kick, but doffy is just too strong,he completely trampled luffy's defense -
They want the ope ope fruit? eh. I guess corazon had the DF before Law. So is fuji going to flip to the revoultionary side?
-
Hum I wonder if Corazon decided to become a doctor after his mother's death. Just like Usopp decided to bang a future doctor.
that sentence did not turn out as i expected…
-

Luffy was just over powered by don that is all .
Yeah he use haki but so did don and his shoes does have a point .
Don seem to use his feet a lot when fighting. -
The story of the bad dad letting his wife rot in the mud is coming from maniac doflamingo.I won't trust him that much on that part of the story.
Yeah. Since DD is apparently just a spoiled rich kid, its probably more like "She needed a liver transplant and he didn't kill someone else and take theirs".
-
In this chapter, Doflamingo loses his dimension.
He didn't really have that many dimensions, just a lot of "mystery" to his past.
-
Loved the interaction between Koala and Sabo, their small interactions have been really fun. The action was really good, seems that this will indeed be a one longer, proper fight, which we haven't had a proper one for a long time. I'm happy with that.
So Fujitora bets on the Strawhats because he doesn't want to see the country in war, but he can't quite go against Doflamingo because of his status as a Shichibukai/involvement with Navy. That's fine by me.Now, the Doflamingo part. I'm not quite sure what to think of it. For one thing, I'm pretty sure there will be more to it. I also do like that we get the first good tenryuubito. I'm interested in finding out more about that character. Not sure about the spoiled brat part, though. I admit, I expected something like Sabo's story, of a noble rebelling, but with the World Nobles. But he wants his rightful place where he was born into back instead, he really does come across like a spoiled brat here. I'm not sure what to think of that. At the same time, there's still the mystery of the loyalty of his crew and I feel like it's too simple in general. It's something different, though.. Just a spoiled brat as a villain.. hmm. A spoiled brat to the point he killed his father. I'm gonna wait for elaboration, or a better look at the picture here.
-
I wonder how Doflamingo got CP.0 to help out if he's disgraced. There's more to this story still and also his current crew, how'd he find them. I thought they were all former slaves but judging by the route his backstory is going, that probably isn't the case.
-
I fully expect Luffy to kick his ass…
Singlehandedly
-
that has nothing to do with luffy being dumb.
luffy tried to block that kick, but doffy is just too strong,he completely trampled luffy's defenseYeah I wanted to say this last chapter discussion but this is a good time as any. Doflamingo controlling Bellamy can't be read, after all it's not Bellamy's own intentions. He's also having Bellamy use swords and Luffy doesn't wanna hit him. Bellamy is useful (as a puppet).
-
That was one hell of a chapter for such few pages.
At first I really disliked Doffy's mini-flashback, but the more and more I read it again, the more I start to like it. As has been mentioned before, it is a nice deviation from a typical backstory, and gives a nice perspective now that we're in the final fight.
But that being said, there is definely more to his past. We still don't know anything about how Corazon and Law fit into it, and there is also the case of his unusually loyal underlings and his even more unusual loyalty to them. Also, didn't Monet say that he dreamt of becoming the pirate king? Is this connected to his wish to destroy everything? Part of me theorises that Doffy may have developed a genuine will to become Pirate King and set sail, but that may be a far stretch. As for the rest of the chapter, Fuji has once again gone over to the likable side. And Law's powers get even more confusing, but I hope there'll be some kind of drawback to his new anti-logia move, like it takes a lot of focus and stamina or something…

This post is deleted!

Okay so:
Sabo won't fight Fujitora anymore and Doflamingo spends some time giving us forced exposition. What boggles me the most however is why the chapter was so short, why only 13 pages?
-
Guess this means that his original crew is just kids from the junkyard?
Although the old guy still gives me the impression that he served the Doffy family for a long time.
-
As shallow and somewhat disapointing as the Dofla backstory is (and it is), we got something from it, even if for now it's only at surface level: the first NON ASSHOLE Tenryubito! Dofla's father seems to be quite a nice guy, or at least didn't want to cope with fucking World Nobles.
Now I hope we'll get to see him in a future flashback when Dofla's backstory gets fleshed out. This is actually huge, you know.
That being said, and as confused as I am with Fuji's stuff, he seems to have made the right choice, and as short as the chapter was, the action was cool and Doffy got back on top real fast.
Cool stuff overall, wished for a better backstory, but it seems we can still take some good from it (Dofla's daddy + Corazón seems like a nice fella too).
-
How does Trebol's snot blade look like a blade?
-
Hasn't that always been the mentality of a Celestial Dragon?
They've always been spoiled brats who think they're superior to everyone in every way possible.
Of course it is, but I'm talking meta of "coolness factor of a villain" for the story, not in universe logic.
-
@The:
Liked Fujitora placing his bet on Straw Hat. He seems like someone who wants to reform the Marines, but has Akainu as fleet admiral, so he has to gamble for his dreams. Maybe he's not blind justice but gambling justice? Or was it confirmed in an SBS or something. I kind of like the idea of a gambling justice.
Ah, but you are forgetting: Akainu is okay with using pirates to deal with other pirates. At least as long it all works according to plan.
I would not be suprised if he fully knew of Fujitora's ambitions, and that's why he send him there.
-
So, Wednesday this time? Whatever, that was a fine chapter, I especially enjoyed Fujitora's moments.
-
Actually, rereading it to make sure, the bit with Dofla's mother is pretty interesting, looks like he might've genuinely cared for her. His father's actions to be a good person killed her? That's actually possibly a really interesting bit of moral ambiguity.
-
I think Jinbe will probably end up meeting the Strawhats after Dressrosa. Earlier he planned on negotiations with Big Mom independently. But now, as he read the news abot the alliance and probably about Caesar getting kidnapped, he may assume that Big Mom who needs Caesar to settle candy-grudges will any how be going after the alliance and its in everyone's best interests to team up. Hence he might end up meeting them.

That was never stated in the Manga or by him. If we could get anything beforehand, we can say he hated them for certain reasons, and now we know. He doesn't like being looked down, and because the CD's basically laughed at him, he wants to kill them. It's silly to believe he was disgusted by their cruelty when he was in charge of the slave trade, and has been fueling many wars across nations. Next you'll tell me Lucci was a delicate flower that couldn't stand the site of blood, and he would go unconscious at the site of corpses.
-
Another thing, I remembered Dofla's speech. People are shaped by their environments. It's like the realism with Hody. That's actually kind of fascinating. Remember, he was a child and had all of that luxury taken away from him, so it must've been quite a shock and then he had a reaction like that. It's different, but now I kinda look forward to that being explored.

I'd like to think that the third brother climbed up the ranks of CP until becoming the leader of CP0. It would explain why Oda hasn't showed us his face at all.
wait. where's this 3rd brother coming from? I thought it was a family of four? corazon, dd, mother, + father.
-
You and me both brother, but it sounds like we're the only ones.
Guess people wanted this guy to have some redeemable qualities like Croc.
Not me. I love me some deliciously evil bastard villains.
-
To clarify, I personally never wanted Doffy to be "redeemed". However, I was expecting his reasons to be much more sinister. Basically, he's doing all of this to get back at the people who rejected him and denied him what's his by birthright. While this motivation is not as bad as my initial impression of it, is still lame compared to what his grand ambitions led me to believe his motivation would be.
I was expecting him to despise the Celestial Dragons for how petty, weak and dependent they're on others, and how entitled and cowardly they act. I was expecting Doffy to be discontent with the way the Celestial lived, and wanted to literally own the world with his own power, and through his own trusted subordinates. Evil, but not petty.
Anyway, the flashback isn't as bad as I initially deemed it to be, but I think it could've been better.
-

I would not be suprised if he fully knew of Fujitora's ambitions, and that's why he send him there.
And Fujitora wants to stop that system, and Akainu isn't one who likes anybody who's out of line. Pretty sure Fujitora needs to allow the results to show if Akainu is to actually do anything. Pretty sure that two Shikibukai at once to disband and show that they were against the WG and Marines the whole time. Seems weird that Akainu would send Fujitora out knowing he wouldn't do what he should do. I need more information before I can really say though.
-
I don't see the problem with Doffy's backstory. Guy's an asshole and him being a spoiled brat that got locked out of , what he considers, paradise fits his character. Heck it even leads more credence at how monsterous the World Nobles can be. Doffy's pretty much their own creation and how dangerous they can be if, you know, they actually could fight worth a damn. Speaking of which, I'm liking that Oda presenting how much of a threat Doffy is when he goes all out. Got right back up from Red Hawk and swiftly beat beat the shit out of Luffy and Law. This is definitely gonna be a rough one for Luffy.
I'm just hoping next week Oda gets on with Doffy's backstory so we can finally get it out of the way and focus on the final battles. I really don't want a repeat of Cagliua/Norland flashback out of nowhere during the climax.
-
OOooo. Excellent chapter. Doffy's back story, i like it. It all makes sense now…..
-
Doffy was a kid when he lost any sense of belonging, although he's born as a noble, clearly his family didn't live with any. He had a sense of entitlement that came with his "royal blood" but he had no way to fulfill it. This is because of his father's actions.
This problem wasn't solved due to his mother's death, in which he also think it's due to his father's actions.
It seems like his father also failed to educate him, another fault. Since his father clearly knew Doffy's personality, his inability to change Doffy resulted in his own death. And after all this left Doffy completely alone, he was rejected by the Tenryuubitos, he was truly alone. Someone without attachment with anything in the world can only bring chaos.
Anyway, great chapter, liked how Doffy turned around the fight quite easily.

This is an interesting possibility , but I think he'll run into Team 2 first. I have a feeling the remaining SH members will leave with either Barto's or Cavendish's ship, because I doubt the Sunny will just show up at the end of the Dressrosa arc, coincidently after the fighting is done.

My life flashed before my eyes reading that chapter.
Good thing I'd read the spoilers otherwise I'd be like 'sHIT NO.' -

BlackPirate was citing the expectation by forum members; he was not saying that was stated in the manga.

wait. where's this 3rd brother coming from? I thought it was a family of four? corazon, dd, mother, + father.
Peeps think there could be a 3rd brother because:
The father left behind a family of four, meaning their family as a whole comes to 5
And Doflamingo mentioned that Law 'almost became the 3rd Corazon', meaning there's Corazon, '2nd Corazon', which could potentially be another brother or sibling, then yh. -
family of four
Father
Dofla
Cora
MomUsing rare ability to count, I conclude that there are no more people in the family.
-
BlackPirate was citing the expectation by forum members; he was not saying that was stated in the manga.
After reading over the comment again with that in mind, it made a lot more sense. My mistake.

And Doflamingo mentioned that Law 'almost became the 3rd Corazon', meaning there's Corazon, '2nd Corazon', which could potentially be another brother or sibling, then yh.I think that's a sucky translation.
It seems it's something more along the lines od father fucking up his family of four, which might inlucde the father.
Also there's only 3 figures around dead mother.
Of course, I'm only guessing here.
-
Why complicate stuff man? There's no 3rd brother.

It doesn't make sense that he would despise the Celestial Dragons when he's owning slave auction houses aimed for nobles, taking over and becoming king of lands that once belonged to his family and using CP0 to help him out with his schemes.
Stuff that you would expect from a World Noble.
